Keith Emerson (1943-2016) was an English composer and member of the celebrated progressive rock supergroup Emerson Lake and Palmer, also known as ELP. While in the band, Emerson also composed works that later on would find their way into the symphony orchestra, such as the Abbadon’s Bolero or the Piano Concerto No. 1. This one was first of all developed as a work that includes 12 tone rows, jazz riffs and pan-diatonicism. However, it was soon to become a programmatic work as well because the finale was inspired by a fire that destroyed his new family house, but also by the help received by the community to rebuild.
Keith Emerson (1943-2016) fue un compositor inglés y miembro de la célebre banda de rock progresivo Emerson, Lake and Palmer, también conocida como ELP. Mientras estaba en la banda, Emerson compuso obras que más tarde hallarían su camino a la orquesta sinfónica, tales como Abbadon’s Bolero o el Concierto para Piano No. 1. Este fue desarrollado como una obra que incluía inicialmente series de 12 tonos, riffs de jazz y pan-tonalismo. No obstante, pronto se convertiría en una obra programática también ya que el final se inspira del incendio que devastó su nueva casa familiar, pero también del apoyo que recibió para reconstruirla.

I have been trying for years to get someone to play this on the radio, however it has fallen on deaf ears. I am not sure if this is prejudice over the fact that it was composed by a rock musician and so seen as not highbrow enough for a ‘serious’ radio station. We hear Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue or John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine ad nauseum and the Piano Concerto compares very favourably with these.
