  • The Harmony H-162 was one of Harmony best selling models. The H-162 and H-165 the mahogany version are still popular today.
Tom Smith of tomsmithguitarist.com has x-braced one of these two guitars and you will be amazed at the quality of the sound the x-bracing produces vs the standard ladder braced. It definitely takes the instrument to a professional recording level.
    Great work Tom

The beauty in modifying (particularly) Harmony (or rebranded Harmony) guitars is that they are genuine aged vintage, they are solid woods (pre 1975) and they are cheap. You can't do this with a Kay acoustic (or rebranded Kay) 'cause they are (mostly) laminate tops. Even if you leave them unmodded, Harmony guitars are a genuine vintage guitar secrete treasure.

ladder braced one was better. Makes more of a difference on larger guitars. Definitely not worth re-bracing these things. The ladder braced guitars record really well

I have a H162 just like the ladder braced. I just restored it and love it.

It's like the difference between a jangly ol' RIckenbacker and a Les Paul special. Both great in their own way.

A very useful comparison. The X-braced sounds better when strummed certainly, but it also sounds like any number of other x-braced guitars out there. It seems a shame to me to convert a nice old ladder braced Harmony like that. If you want a guitar to sound like a Martin then go buy a Martin and leave the ladder-braced guitars for those who appreciate them.

Wow! Even on my phone in a case I could hear the difference! Ladder bracing was much more low-mid forward, and the x braced one was brighter and clearly more contemporary in tone.

To me, the x brace is incredible. Sounds like a Martin, almost.

Bob, I really like your videos. I noticed on your H165 video You mentioned how hard you can hit the guitar and how well it responds without distorting. Would you say the ladder braced 162 is louder when you hit it harder? Or can the x bracing take as much of a hard strum without losing high end?

The x-bracing sounds awesome, and the ladder bracing sounds like crap! I would sell it. ( just my 50 years of playing opinion)
