if I were to make it much smaller size I would just do les chains and make sure it wraps around the torso correctly, right?

To adjust the pattern, I'd practice working dc rows to crochet a small sample and find out my gauge. Then I would work dc rows to about armpits and begin the decrease. You may work button holes the way I showed in the video or use spaces between double crochets as your button holes. Happy crochet!

You are doing the yarn over incorrectly. It is always over the top, back to front, never the other way around. Please do not post incorrect information.

The yarn over can be done clockwise and/or counterclockwise. In some projects, I indicate whether to work yarn over clockwise or counterclockwise. For example, if you do double crochet counterclockwise on the wrong side of the garment, it will look clockwise on the right side of the garment and vice versa. It's just the same if you purl on the wrong side of the fabric, and it will look knit on the right side. It all depends on what look you want to get. For this pattern, it doesn't really matter which way you'll do the yarn over. That's why I did not mention it in the written instruction.
