KAYAK FISHING | BASS LURE FISHING | LESSONS WERE LEARNT

- So I finally got out on the kayak again.. In this video I paddle out with the intention of doing some fishing for bream and bass. I had two rods with me, one for some lure fishing and one with a two hook flapper rig, intended for some light bait fishing. Once I'd paddled out a few hundred yards, I started chucking some lures around. Although it was coming up to slack tide, the run of tide out to sea was still quite strong, so I decided to stick to the lures and target some bass.
Throughout this short trip, I'd manage to lose a fish, lose a lure, catch a couple of bass, and also fall out of the kayak! This video was cut short due to me soaking my phone which I explain, how that happened at the end of the video. Lessons were learnt from this experience, so I'll be taking a little more care during future sessions out on the water.
I hope you enjoy the video, it was a fun little trip and luckily the water wasn’t that cold! 😂🤙🏼🎣
As always, thanks for watching!

Lucky boy with your phone. Lovely fish. Man's got to eat....
Yeah very lucky. I've since found the water proof bags 😂👍🏼
As always top draawer Cal. Enjoyed the warts-and-all approach. Good on yo mate and thanks for sharing another cracking adventure! - SMITHY 😉🤙🎣🐟
Cheers Smithy mate 🤙🏼🎣
Don't be embarrassed about getting wet, it's part of kayak fishing. Once you gain a bit of confidence and experience you'll enjoy it more. My advice would be to practice your self rescues until it isn't scary for your; go out in a shallow sandy bay, and just practice your self rescues, tip the kayak and practice righting it. Practice, practice, practice.
Thanks. Yes I’ll practice that in the future. Thanks a lot 👍🏼🎣
It happens mate at least you got a nice bass haha glad to see your sound, super dingy goes in the water soon your welcome out fishing 🎣
It was more embarrassing then anything haha. I'm up for some dingy action 🔥 It's looking good in the photos👍🏼
Glad your made it to the shore ok Cal, that second bass was a nice one. Nothing wrong with keeping odd bass for the table i dont know why people go mad about that as there are plenty of bass about. Tight lines 🎣
Cheers mate. Yeah I have no problem with people taking the odd fish. It went down well though 👌🏻👍🏼
Hi cal love you videos man they help me through really tough times always wait for the notification
That's great to know mate. I hope things get a little easier for you 👍🏼 Glad you like the videos 😀
Excellent stuff, Cal! The kayak life appeals to me, so watching you taking the first tentative steps is going to be a great learning experience.
What a stonking fish, purest silver perfection, and you deserve to enjoy the bounty of your labours, mate.
Would LOVE to see a cook up of such an amazing bass. Simply adore eating sea bass!
Thanks mate. I did cook this one but not on film. Just glad it didn’t fall off the back when I went in!
@@FISHINGWITHCAL Yeah, I commented when you almost apologised for taking the bass for the pot. I just felt strongly that sensible harvesting shouldn't need explaining, mate, more power to ya!
I hadn't reached the Titanic stage of the video when I commented. Thanks for sharing that, Sam, etc, make it look like a bombproof platform, mostly cus they are Pro's I guess, but a dose of the reality of sea faring, the fact you could end up in a world of shit, was most sobering. Yer a good en for sharing that. 👍
Hey accidents happen everyday. It's just in how you handle them. And having your witts about you and keeping calm . Take care besafe God Bless you and your families 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks 👍🏼
Hi Cal, I kayak quite a bit and a few years ago I tipped the kayak (Moken 12) completely upside about half a mile offshore in Cornwall - trying to pull up an anchor a midships is a very bad idea - always pull it up from the bow (see anchor trolley comments later). Your kayak is quite short - general view is 10 ft is absolute min for the open sea but 12ft is far better. When going in the drink the cold water shock is the biggest worry - I was ok after I got my breath - managed to get it back up the right way and had already practiced getting back in, so was fine. I lost lots of gear that time but now either lash stuff down or put loose stuff in ice cream containers so they float. I now am very cautious ever putting an anchor down even though I have one with me, unless I'm sure it is either mud or sand below me. Obviously safety first and all that: min is VHF radio, GPS, with a compass as back-up (fog is the issue), PFD, mobile phone in zip-lock bag is ok but a waterproof phone is best - already ruined one when I fell in off the bank once. But your best friend for most lure fishing is a drogue (like an underwater parachute) - this would have slowed your drift right down to between 0.5-1mph depending on tide and wind strength and saved a lot of paddling back up wind, so more time fishing - they are far more useful than an anchor most days. I made mine out of an old windsurfing sail - works a treat cos I like a big one about 1m x1m - you can buy them as well but they tend to be a bit small for my liking. But then you need an anchor trolley - check out the Cornish Shore and kayak fisherman channel - loads of useful tips on there for how to set this up and how to use it. Unfortunately the more you get into kayak fishing the more stuff you end up taking with you - so now takes 40mins to load everything, but still love it. Nice bass btw - had plenty myself this year in Cornwall - most of which went back. Keep the vids coming!
Hi mate, thanks for the comment. My kayak is 13ft so it’s an ideal size for fishing from. It probably looks smaller on camera through a GoPro lens.
Yeah cold water shock is a big concern. Personally I’d only use the kayak in the summer (fortunately, the sea is pretty warm at the moment so going in wasn’t so bad).
I think the route I’d go down would be to just take as little as possible with me. I like the idea of full on kayak fishing, but I don’t think I’d commit fully to it. I do have a drogue, but I’m yet to use it. I also have an anchor trolley fitted too. I’ve seen the Cornish kayak channel, he certainly knows his stuff! I’ve seen quite a few of his videos, they’re really helpful. Thanks again for the comment, maybe I’ll end up getting more into kayak fishing. For now I’ll just see how it goes. 👍🏼
Well done Cal. Scary when you drop in the water....done that before. Most crucial thing for me was ensuring everything is clipped down so you can’t lose it. Rods, bags and all your gear. I never kayak more than 20 yards from the sea wall in my area. Always safety first. Great fish....hope that didn’t slide off the back! Make a stringer up. 👍👍👍🐟🐟
Yeah I should have everything tied down. I did with some things but a lot of it would’ve gone straight in the water if the kayak had tipped. Kayaks are a lot of hassle, there's no way I'm going all out with it. I'll stick to light fishing 😂🎣
Glad to hear you where all good, it was the first thing i was taught in the Kayak when living in New Zealand get in the drink and get back on it, get in the drink again flip it and now get back on it, now do it in a meter swell, its valuable info never had to do it thank god as the waters where full of sharks where i used to live but its handy to know what to do in these situations. That was a lovely Bass to well done.
That's great advice and someone did actually tell me to do that when I first got the kayak. Fair play to you for kayaking in shark infested waters! There is no chance I'd be doing that. Thanks for the comment 👍🏼🎣
@@FISHINGWITHCAL when i think back of some of moments looking down and seeing something big cruising past underneath the kayak mark my words you will never make a bad call up on top haha cheers mate.
@@marcocapozzella Yeah I'm sure that gets the heart racing!! That's definitely not for me 😂
Love that. Another great video from the best fishing channel. Also , suggestion, could you do a video of making a pool pond with things u catch with smash fishing from the lighthouse
Thanks 🤙🏼 The pool pond is Jays thing so I’ll leave that to him. Maybe one day I’ll tag along because that would be good fun. Thanks for watching the video 🎣👍🏼
Glad your ok bud, that extra lean and a rogue wave you can be in mate, it's happened to us all at one point or another I think, just make sure everything's on elastic chords then you know it doesn't matter you can flip it back and get yourself settled again, thanks for sharing so new kayaks can be made aware of how quickly even on a good day things can quickly change.
Tight lines bud
Thanks mate. Yeah anything can happen, and very quickly too. Always have to be prepared. 👍🏼
The catch and release gods were trying to tell you something Cal, glad you’re ok mate. 👍
I know! haha I'll put them back next time 😀
Interesting that lyour zip up bag weren't available 🤔 when it was required however did it avert deeper water issues ,,go over your fail safe setup and tye everything as one bundle to the kayak presuming they are buoyant...Good luck out there and pray for your safety before seting off
Not many bass up our end ( west Cumbria) it’s died off a bit over the last 2-3 weeks . tbh a good summer though!!! Complete convert to Bass fishing?!
Yeah that can happen sometimes. I’m sure you’ll get into some again soon. Bass fishing is addictive. It only gets worse by the way 😂 Thanks for watching the video 👍🏼🎣
👍👍
Glad your ok , I’d stick to fishing from the shore , can’t beat a bit of terra firma , nice bass by the way , you earned that
Thanks 👍🏼 Yeah I'm better on land than water 😂
Nice one Cal. I heard you needed a wash anyway.
😂👊🏼
Great video 👍and glad all ended ok 👌 did you loose the fish? If not you said you’d share everything so I will have a fillet lol 😂 😂
Kayak fishing looks hard to do but fun 🤩
Haha, thanks 👍🏼 No I didn’t loose the fish, I'd have gone back in to get it if I had haha
Hi cal, heard you've got a kayak for sale, only used twice ,at least you haven't fell off a stair master in the gym like me 😉
😂 One day I’ll get the hang of it 🤞🏼
🤭🤭🎣🎣
Small boat with an outboard motor you would have more room and it would be safer definitely
That’s next on the agenda 👍🏼
