As life long Newfoundland owner. Have one by all means but remember 3 things.
    1. They'll SLIME EVERYWHERE. You.included.
    2. If left too long on their own. Can be very destructive
3.only live about 10yrs. BE PREPARED TO HAVE YOUR HEART RIPPED OUT when they die.. it's no less than losing a spouse or child..
They'll dedicate they're life to you and their family..

I remember 20 years ago my vets, husband and wife team, finally managed to get their dream puppies, a pair newfies. They were ecstatic. Pups were wonderful. I went in for something a couple of months later and his wife wasn't there so naturally I asked how the dogs were doing and his better half. Juan a looked a bit shell shocked. I looked startled and went the pups are okay , yeah? Oh yeah he said the pups are fine, complete handful but expected and fine, but Angela is 3 months pregnant. I had to bite my lip because they had got the pups because they hadn't been successful in the kiddie department so chose their bears. Didn't think you guys were still trying? We weren't. Ohhhhh. Then he bombshelled and I broke down in hysterical laughter. She was having triplets! At the time they drove a Renault Express, it wasn't going to cut it anymore. Still long story short they had 3 kids, their pair of immaculate newfie bears, bags under their eyes for a couple of years and loved it.

    • @juliegogola4647

I feel for you. I know it's been 4 years, BUT, still, I feel for you, I lost MY BIG BOY OVER 4 years ago, and, I still miss him. And, since I am getting older and more arthritic, I can't care for BIG dogs. I am thinking that maybe I can care for a smaller dog that is called a "Pocket Bully", basically a dog that is in the "Bully breed family, like a "pitt bull", BUT, it is a smaller framed dog.
I will always LOVE my "OOFFIE MAN" though. He had been my constant companion for 6-7 years. I adopted him from the dog pound in about 2007 or 2008. And, he went with me everywhere, he would not have to be on leash, he would just listen to me, and would follow me all around the yard. And, when I went in my car, he would really make sure that he would be there with me, IF I had to leave him at home, like if I was going to be gone for HOURS, I had to trick him, or have my brother hold him back. Otherwise, I simply put on the AC and locked the doors, and I had 2 keys to that car, so, I would just let the gas burn up to keep him cool in the AC. His name was "PEPPER", but he knew his NICKNAME "OOFFIE" better than Pepper, since I called him OOFFIE so often. Sorry to be such a SAD SACK here, BUT, when you've had a NEWFIE as your buddy, you will NEVER forget him or her. I REALLY wish that I could adopt another Newfie, or Newfie mix, but, I am just thinking about how it went when my OOFFIE had gotten sick and could not walk anymore. He had eventually gotten KIDNEY FAILURE, and he had diabetes for a few years before that. I had been able to get him needles and insulin at Walmart for maybe $25 for an insulin bottle and the needles, I can't recall, BUT, I could afford it.
Anyway, anybody that wants a NEWFIE, it's all good and fun until you have to spend LOTS of money for food and vet care.
IF you CAN AFFORD IT, then maybe you should get one, BUT, when they get sick, you still have to care for them. I went into debt for my OOFFIE, care credit got me owing lottsa money, BUT, I would have not cared how much IF my OOFFER could have been saved.
He was so smart like a person in a giant black fur coat. Newfie's are GREAT.
If you can afford to feed and get the vet visits they need, maybe get yourself one or 2. They are very SENSITIVE dogs, so, do NOT get one IF you are wanting a dog that is basically a "roll with the punches" kinda dog. Newfie's are very emotional.
They are very sweet too. They may kinda "pick" their person too. Sure, they will love all the family as long as those people are kind to them, BUT, they DO sorta pick a person they will consider "their person", and that person is basically who they LOVE more than anyone else. I had been lucky enough to be that person for my OOFFIE man.
Sorry this is so long, I have had a few drinks before writing this, so that is why it is so long, BUT, I mean it all. Do NOT adopt a NEWFIE without being aware of how they are, they will basically be like a VELCRO DOG to the person they have chosen to be their person. They will want to join you in the bathroom when you are doing #2, and IF you lock the door when you are doing that, they will be right outside of the door waiting to see when you are done wiping and flushing. And, I am NOT even kidding. I had to trick my newfie so I could sneak out into my car without him when I had to go someplace that I'd be gone for more than a short time. He was SO determined to be with me 24/7. They are GREAT DOGS, but, be prepared for the ULTRA DEVOTION that they will feel for their person, it can be shocking if you aren't used to it. Anyways, IF you can deal with this all, then, get a NEWFIE.
I wish that I didn't have so much arthritis, then maybe I could care for a Newfie again. It's all good when they are young, but, when they get sick and old, and that can be when they are just 8 years old. It isn't so easy, and, the price of dog food has gone up be over 50% since I had my OOFFIE MAN. Really, super big dogs that are NOT high energy may only eat about as much as a Golden Retriever does,. or slightly more. But, anyhow, people should be prepared for how the Newfies are.
Sweet dogs that may need some extra care and can get diabetes and other diseases that smaller breed dogs don't usually get. And, they don't usually live much beyond 8 years. But, if you know what to expect, you will LOVE them and they will LOVE you.

One thing not mentioned: If you get one and have a pool or want to swim with them you should try to train them for water rescue. I never trained mine so he’ll swim to me and not know what to do other than be where i am, scratching me while he swims. I’ve learned to push him around me and it’s fine but it’s safer to train the dog because he could drown someone on accident if they don’t know what to do

We train for advanced water rescue. All of these situations we put them in are simulations. While they have natural tendencies, it is does not always come natural to newfs not to climb on their owners. That it a learned behavior for some.

    • @astridsallerlei5355
      @astridsallerlei5355 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Thank you so much for the answer often echoing alone isn't so bad in a video but covering it up with music makes it very hard to filter out the spoken words. I recommend getting a mic you can clip on yourself because that'd probably be better than one of these huge ones on the camera in that case. (I'm sorry if I offended you a bit but I thought this was extremely crucial information.) Inform yourself really well and maybe try it out beforehand if possible because recording the sound afterwards is a lot of a hassle. Most TH-camrs also list their equipment in the video info. Please stroke your more than just beautiful Newfie from me I'd be so happy!

    • @marlo9380

Astrids Allerlei I agree you and your Newfs are so interesting no music is needed.

    • @thegreatcerebral
      @thegreatcerebral 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@astridsallerlei5355 Some of what you are saying is incorrect. Yes a lavalier mic can work but in this instance with her pup it would have been horrible because you would have heard muffling and the vocals would cut every time her pup came in for a hug.
It really depends on the setup/space/studio they want to do the recordings in that will dictate which mic is best. Those "huge ones on the camera" are great and can be used when vlogging (popular brand is RODE) and it's also what I would suggest in the future for your videos... called a boom mic. It's what studios use when filming scenes that looks like an animal dangling from a long pole. That essentially is the wind screen.
If you are looking for super professional audio in your videos then you will need a setup where you record the audio separate from the video and put them together during editing. There are tools that allow you to do just that (it's in the video editing software). Just make sure to add a noise gate into your audio to clear any audio when you are not speaking (basically kills the background hiss/hum) and you want to and compression to your vocal track.
Once you get there and if you want to get real professional you keep your audio track, you will put some b-roll shots and section titles to your video and you can keep the background music on all the time just drop it down really low when you are talking and bring it up during the transition cuts (the b-roll and titles). Nothing wrong with audio in the video, it just needs to drop when you are speaking to hardly audible. I know the other two that commented here say you don't need it but they probably don't realize how off-putting it is without it. You aren't screaming into the video like a vlogger does so it feels weird if there is no music.

Ive had 5 Newfies over the past seven years first three were rescues my current two are both purchased, one definite thing is no dog is the same at all. These dogs are messy, strong and can be quite intelligent and cheeky.
Grooming is a very important part of owning a Newfie as did in the video either every day for a littl bit or every few days. "Cattle blasters" are the best for removing dead undercoat and generally just flushing their coats through.
Training is super important these dogs like water some a lot more than others it's important to work out how confident your dog in the water.
Overall just bare in mind these dogs will get big and when it comes to their time they will begin to deteriorate with there health, generally joint related. My last rescue dog passed away last year he was very tall and very muscular he weighed just over 14 stone but even with his great muscular build after a while his health deteriorated to the point were he couldn't stand up anymore.
These dogs are a massive commitment please thing carefull before getting one!

They are not easy dogs to look after, but they are soooooo worth it.They are very intelligent loyal & trainable and absolutely adorable. My mom kept the hair from grooming the 3 we had, she then washed it, carded it & spun it into wool. She then crocheted sweaters out of the wool! They only live about 8 - 10 years on average & have issues with their hips. Despite ALL the issues with drool, hair & the fact they don't understand that they are NOT lap dogs, they are one of the very best breeds you can have for your family. They are very gentle around kids, but do need supervision as they may inadvertently knock small toddlers down.

Thank you so much for making this video!!! My family and I, especially my children, were blessed to have grown up with two magnificent, absolutely wonderful Landseers years ago! Sebastian and Millie were such incredible, intelligent, super loyal and loving dogs! I rescued Sebastian when he was 18 mths old. Poor guy was chained to a tree because he was too big, drooly and shed too much. I was fortunate to find Millie from a very caring breeder. To say Newfies are most definitely my all time favourite breed is an understatement! I'm a professional dog trainer and when I had my darling droolers I joined the regional Newfoundland Dog Club here in Ontario, Canada and we all had so much fun doing carting and water rescue! Being at breed events with dozens and dozens of these awesome dogs was such a fantastic fun time!. I lost my sweethearts, Sebastian at 11 and a half and Millie was a few months shy of her 13th birthday. It took me well over a year until my broken heart healed enough to even thinking about getting another dog. It was helping to raise a motherless litter of pups and one of them chose me... a German Shepherd/Border Collie that mended my heart back to being whole again. Unfortunately due to health issues I am unable to have a Newf for exactly the reasons you stated in this video...well most of them. As much as I tear up, get a huge lump in my throat everytime I see one and how I miss tripping over a huge live bear rug all the time, I know I'd struggle to keep up with the grooming requirements. Then there's the expense of keeping them in tip top condition with the enormous food and vet bills. Sometimes I wish I had the selfish gene especially when my husband sees me pinning for a Newf pup and he says we can get one. Luckily I know, or used to know all the good breeders. I fondly remember the days when I was offered 2 pups because I'd gotten a very good reputation with the breeders that were also club members. They saw first hand how much I loved my dogs and all the activities we did together. Breeders would offer me co-ownership and boy it was so hard to say no . These wonderful dogs are my heart and soul, always will be! I love every single thing about them! Even the drooling...after a good head shake we'd laugh and get out the tape measure to see if they'd broken their distance record of 20 feet and the daily shedding of a Shih Tzu sized ball of fluff! lol As much as my heart aches for another gentle giant, the most huggable of hounds, I know it wouldn't be fair to the pup. He/she would have all the love in the world, but also mats as I'd never be able to maintain that gorgeous oily coat properly.
We have two very cute, super sweet, short haired pooches now...Molly (Pug/Beagle/Boston Terrier) and Mabel (Boston Terrier/Pug). They are very different than the big furry giants, but I adore them and they are great companions plus are super easy keepers with very little grooming requirements. I will always want a Newfoundland Dog as once you've fallen in love with them, they'll have your heart forever! I have "Epitaph to a Dog" the poem by Lord Byron on my wall. Thanks again for making this very important video and be ever so grateful you are able to share your life with this beautiful, benevolent breed! I apologize for how long this got! I suppose I just got overly sentimental. : )

I had not a newfie but a breed that has newfie in them, Landséer. He was the first dog I ever loved, even tho we only took him over when he was already 5 years old. His owner couldn't give the time he deserved anymore and felt it wasn't fair to him. He was a true gentle giant, we never had a problem with him, not with our 3 cat's, not with walking him, he wasn't a tugger at all (didn't have the newfie jowls actually so he wasn't much of a drooler, until he saw food lol) I was a teen, he weighed about the same as me so I was pretty grateful he didn't. He loved to carry things and feel he was helpful, even if it was just empty plastic bottles and other things that could stand being drooled on but it made him so happy. Freddie ❤ miss you

Excellent video! Hope that people watch this video and listen with comprehension to everything she tells you. Getting a dog (or any animal) is a commitment that should not be a passing fancy or be taken lightly! (Don't mean anything negative but, some people are not met to have dogs). We have rescue dogs ranging from 70 pounds to 110 pounds around our house. Spending time with them is a very important factor. We also have the proper setup for them as we have a big (1/2 acre) fenced-in yard (with cattle panel reinforced bottoms) and a nice temperature-controlled house that they are welcomed into as part of the family). There is a park with a walking trail not far from our house and that is where we "exercise" ourselves (lol) and our dogs. Don't get a dog if you don't have time to spend with them. They require love, discipline (positive training), and attention. And, as for the house (lol), I sweep and vacuum up dog hair at least every other day ... if not everyday. In regard to our rescue dogs, the question is who rescued who! Can't imagine life without them.

I love how you brought up going to look at a full grown one. I volunteered at an animal shelter for years and one of the most common things was people would come return their dogs after a couple months cause they didn’t know about the breed and didn’t realize it’d get big

I have a 9 month old Landseer. Ichinojo loves to tip over his water bowl and my floors are perpetually covered in black and white hair. He is not stubborn except for when it's time for him to get into the car, which he hates. The first time I took him near water was on a trip up to Scotland. He jumped right into Loch Ness and made like it was his natural home, and it amazed me what a natural swimmer he is.

The most amazing dog! We have so many newf stories -- one of my favorites is how our daughter Tracy got her first new (Fozzie Bear) as a rescue dog -- at age 7 -- and when she and her good friend Sara went to the river to go swimming, Tracy kept calling Fozzie Bear. But FB would not leave Sara alone, to the point that he was glued to her side the whole afternoon. He wouldn't even let Sara into the water past her knees. Later, when I was driving the two girls home, Tracy said, "I can't believe Fozzie Bear wouldn't go swimming with me! He's a newf -- he's suppose to love water!" With that, Sara replied, "Well, that's because he knows I am not a swimmer. That is why he wouldn't leave my side!" Ah, from the mouths of babes to understand the animal kingdom! Yes, it turns out that FS loved water and would swim with Tracy when Sara wasn't there. :-)

I rescued a two year old Newfie black lab mix, about 15 years ago. We had him for 12 years, and I'm sure he had at least two more years, but, horribly sadly, OMG bad, he ended up getting cancer on his lower lip. I thought it was a tooth, an abscess, because it was like the size of a quarter, so I scheduled an emergency vet check up and she said bring him right in.. he never came home. Apparently, with some of the big breeds, they get a really fast growing, very aggressive and painful type of cancer that starts on the mouth, and within days chokes off even his ability to eat. My heart is still crushed today and it happened a couple of years ago. But, the good news is, I'm ready to find another best friend to share this mountain with me, here in N.H.. Oh, and they love the winters up here too. Charlie Bear and I were inseparable after he got over the depression of having to leave the shelter where I found him. For three weeks after I brought him home, he barely moved, ate, or anything. He would just lay there. I called the place and talked to them and this is what they told me. They were only supposed to keep him for a set time, after that, he was supposed to give up his pen for a new dog, and have him scheduled to be put down. But they fell in love with him and couldn't do it.. So he would roam the hallways and would do his business outside, and come in at night, but he was cageless. AND HAPPY!!!! Apparently he fell in love with the shelter and the workers and was completely content if that was going to be his home. You see, these dogs have a lot of love, what Incredibly wonderful,, beautiful animals they truly are, I side and out, drool and all..... any way, after realizing what the issue was, I tripled down on the love, and special home cooked meals, with lots of steak and pork, and chicken, and perty soon, you couldn't tear him off this mountain. I loved that dog as much as I could love any human, he was that good of a fella!!!! No one could ever replace my Charlie Bear, but, think it's time to look see if mebbe there's a Newfie needing a place......

Hey, thanks for the advice. It's definitely given us plenty to think about before we get a dog. It sounds like a lot of work, but that work also builds the relationship too, and as a guy who works away at times I like the idea of a loyal dog that has the size to help my partner and kids simply by deterrence. The downsides I can live with probably outside of the regular grooming and the training. I'm too much a softie.

When I was little, around 2 years old, we owned a Newfie. I LOVE Newfies!! His name was Bear, he was giant, drooly and took up all the backseat of my Mom and Dad’s VW slugbug (70’s Bug). I would sit back there, in my car seat, with Bear laying on me, drooling. He knocked me face first in the mud, was like a horse to me. I love seeing Newfs and we have a local breeder, who shows her Newfs. Yeti (my Samoyed) and I, had gone to conformation classes and the big Newfies would be there. Absolutely gorgeous dogs! Bear would lay alongside my parents’ bed, drooling on my Mom each night. Their heads are giant, very gentle and loving dogs. But, the drool is intense! I have owned Samoyeds and love my Sammy. But, I do greatly enjoy seeing a very large Newf. Beautiful dogs!

Very good video- by my "handle", one can see I have Newfs , 3 landseers to be precise. Everything you said made good sense, and should be mandatory watching for any prospective dog owners. I am so proud of my Landseers, and with every other day brushings, which is actually easy- as they have all been trained to jump up onto the tailgate of my truck... they know the procedure and it takes less than 10 minutes per dog. Momma jumps off, Daddy jumps up..and so on. But I still take them to the groomers every 2 months. Between that, I have taught them about swimming and rescue, and we get to the lake every week. I do clean, but not well ( man cleaning), so I have a weekly housekeeper to do a "real good" cleaning. Everyone comments on "food bills" , but as a Newf owner you realize- they really don't eat anymore than , say a Lab. My dogs are highly social and the neighbourhood kids come over to play all the time- and the little girls down the street have a weekly tea party on my front lawn, and dress up my dogs. They visit one hospital and 2 senior centres regularly, and the end of this diatribe is... No one knows my name- but everyone can name off my Landseers.... and that suits me fine. Thanks again.

Luckily for Apollo he is one of the family and I would do whatever is in my means to provide for him. I have had many different breeds of dog, both small and large. Apollo is by far the best companion that I have had. There would be a hole in my heart without him.

  • @nastasiasweet8105
    @nastasiasweet8105 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes! This relevant to almost any large dog! We have an English Mastiff and the struggle is real for all of these things. I have always wanted a Newfie and hope to have both in my family someday!
We stay in our toy hauler for most of our vacations/travel because most hotels have a dog weight limit. 40 pounds? Please. 😂
    The snoring is real.
Another thing that sounds silly but we have had to deal with is transportation with special ramps to get in and out of the truck because my baby’s hips are bad. I’m not strong enough to pick him up. Cheap ramps are not wide enough for their stance. It’s better dog problems.
My heart is happy to hear you talk about the honest truths of large dog families. We see so many in the shelters because people don’t realize the sacrifices. I have hair in my food, drool on the wall, and a geriatric 170 pound dog snoring in the other room. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I don't really agree. Many people overspend on their dogs, taking them to the groomers, unnecessary vet visits, etc.
A good kibble, annual vet visit, some simple toys, do the grooming yourself, training yourself, obedience yourself... with a little bit of extra effort a dog doesn't have to be expensive, and a Newfie is no more expensive than any other breed. You don't need to take your dog to the vet every time it's a little lethargic or because it ate a tiny piece of chocolate crumb that fell on the floor. You don't need to buy every cute fluffy toy you see at the pet store.
If the purchase price of a Newfie is "cheap" compared to everything else you spend on your pet, you're doing it wrong. Try having indoor cats with cat trees, high quality litter, special indoor diets, toys to keep them entertained, etc. and see how that compares.

I had two Newfies before I developed an allergy and kept them both anyway until they crossed the rainbow bridge. Everything said is TRUE! The only thing that wasn't mentioned was that you will be replacing your vacuums on semi-annually unless you have a Kirby vacuum cleaner. . and then that requires a thorough cleaning on a monthly basis because the oily Newfie fur will clog it. I really miss having a Newfie. My last one died a two years ago in January. They are so wonderfully kind dogs and I highly recommend to anyone that has the wherewithal of money and patience to own one.

I had a Newfie/ Black Lab mix, he was pretty much the size of a Newfie and he was 180 Lbs, so pretty heavy, his hair was a bit easier to groom, but, once he got about 6 years old he got diabetes, which the breed is prone to, he eventually went blind from the diabetes, and so getting the insulin did cost add the cost of his care, he didn't really eat that much more than the average large dog, he was a really great and smart dog, I would say that a Newfie, and in my case a Newfie/Black lab mix dog, is a really smart dog, and they are really good at connecting with their owners. Sometimes you could swear that they know what you are saying to them, and they kinda answer you with their body language, Newfies are like having a kid with a bunch fur, they are really smart, they connect with their parents.

He was mega playful and a handful, regular bloody lips, black eyes, af worth it. Hope our to be Newfie enjoys grooming as much as our Leo, otherwise, tough luck for him :D

Found it funny when you mentioned the water bowl flipping , when my Newfoundland was a pup he wouldn't stop doing so 😂🐻

What do you think of feeding your dog a raw diet? I have a friend that feeds her Newf a raw diet and he hardly sheds as well as his coat is really shiny.
