So much of the higher end Master products are solid and well built. But from what I'm seeing it all comes down to not wanting to spend the last $.40 on a decent lock core. Kinda like building an amazing mansion with 16 bedrooms and 12 baths but moving in with old rotting mattresses and rusted kitchen appliances. (I have seen this). This is what we call a million dollar body with a ten cent brain!!!
1 position tubular locks always make me smile .. btw. you mentioned several times that impression tool only works if the springs are all same tensions and driver pins same length. Can you elaborate ? IMHO impressioning should work as long as the pins bind when pushed beyond correct height.
This is not impressioning like you would see in a more conventional lock. The tools work so quickly because they apply equal FORCE to each pin stack. As such, each of the springs are compressed the same amount. If there is a long key pin, then the spring is already compressed more, and tool the tool moves it less. If there is a short key pin, the spring is less compressed to begin with, and the tool moves that pin stack more. When all of the springs are the same strength, and all the driver pins are the same length, this has the effect of aligning the breaks in the pin stacks along the same plane… a little bit of jiggling aligns that plane with shear line and the lock opens. ... at least that's my understanding of why they work. I hope that makes sense.
WOW i love this shiny lock and tubular design .it would make a great paper weight for my desk lol lol i would not lock up anything valuable with this lock GREAT REVIEW .I DON'T KNOW WHY THAY KEEP INSULTING CONSUMER INTELLIGENCE .THANKS FOR SHOWING 😎😎😎😎😎🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟.
Watching some of your older videos, it appears as though tubular locks are a waste of time and money. Are there any decent ones on the market, or is this a lock type to avoid? Seems like none have variable tension springs, and can easily be single pin picked. Love the channel!
thanks for sharing the video of the disc brake alarm, If you ever get your hands on Xena x15 lock, please try to pick them. they are wafer locks. Also what is the best way to add/install the center pin in an inpression tool.the one I ordered didn't have it..
Sorry your tool was missing the center pin. The way that was handled is one of the reasons that I am no longer doing reviews for them. Very upsetting. As for replacing it, I would try using it without it first. Most of the time, it will work just fine. See my video #224.
While this particular lock was clearly lacking in anti-pick security, it makes sense that their warranty specifies "by force" -- if only to demand evidence of lock compromise. If the lock is bypassed in a way that doesn't leave a mark, how can you prove it was the lock that let you down?
Jess Hull I have no use for ML locks nor do I have a cycle anymore but I ordered this lock because it is a very attractive lock. I guess I'll just pick it a few times and find some papers to weight down... ;-)
So... which one would be a good disc lock, if all of them can be picked? One that is super though and mean looking? Maybe the Xena X1, X2, or X3? And using a u lock? Two locks so thieves do not want to spend the extra time and get caught? a sound alarm? a hidden fuel by pass valve? hidden disconnect switch? Thanks..
Sorry, but I don't know enough about rotor locks to recommend one... this one (and another really cheap one) just happened into my collection by accident (purchasing a large lot).
In pretty much every video you say you would not recommend the lock you picked, so what would you recommend? It's a cheap shot to say you won't recommend something but then recommend nothing. Someone with dozens if not hundreds of specialized tools and years if not decades of practice picking locks does not recommend this, but won't recommend anything. Do you see the issue with that? "If I can crack it, I would not recommend it"? Is that your deal? No locks are good enough? No locks can be recommended? I have not seen you recommend any lock in almost a hundred videos watched, and any google search for it turns out NO recommendation for any lock, of any kind, though there are some recommendations for lock-picks, illegal as they are in so many places. Goddammit dude. Nothing is a decent defense for you. Gun locks, padlocks, brake locks. That bothers me to no end, not even a "lock I'd rather leave alone than expose myself picking" scenario?
one again, try the Xena alarm disk. there are several variances of the lock. it's a multi lock design. very hard to pick and they have an alarm that's pretty loud..
Seeing as 95% of people don’t know how to pick a lock or carry around that took you had this lock is perfectly fine for preventing theft and is not easy to open.
Does he ever try the bolt extractor in this lock? Recently he's been looking for a solid steel disk brake lock, well wouldn't lpl have this in his inventory?
This scares the hell out of me. As Harley uses barrel style keys on their ignitions on many motorcycles.... I'd like to see you try and get a Harley ignition unlocked, and theft of bikes is huge in some metro areas and it seems that often the thief is able to ride the bike away and I'm unsure from the videos I've seen if the owner left the ignition unlocked or the thief got it unlocked.
A *very* attractive lock! Master lock makes a very strong and durable product. Until I became interested in Locksport I really thought they were the best lock out there. Oh well, the marketplace remains uninformed and Master lock keeps making the big bucks. Oh! Upon reviewing your video, I see either a drain hole or possibly a set screw below the key-wayj. Is this core removable? Probably not but just thought I'd ask.
On these locks, a set pin will have a little springiness to it. I pushed it past the springiness, and it caught (i.e., overset). The only way to recover is to release a little tension and hope you don't drop too many pins before the one you are trying to release.
L. P. L. , Let me say 1st off... Great video (as always) I do have a question... Say you just finished a session with a long time client, whom you've known for years / decades, like a friend, & say off chance it's the 1 of 3 clients that knows you pick. They locked themselves out of the car or forgotten combo to briefcase... Would you help out if asked ? And if so, would you ask them to sign a waver of liability ?
LOL, I very, very, very rarely pick locks in the wild. I can count on one hand the number of times I did, and I'd have fingers left over. Most people I know don't even know that I pick.
I'd hate to approach my motorcycle (back when I rode in the late 90s) and see *additional* disc brake locks. I'd have to leave my own lock in place, have my motorcycle towed home, and then have to remove the thief's lock(s). I wish you could disassemble this lock to improve it.
Oh, snap! If it can't be picked, field expedient way to remove these might be a diamond grit wire saw... hidden somewhere on your bike. Stick it through the top of the slit, and saw it in half.
Well, physical security might be more important than pick resistance, but if a lock has such a glaring weakness, it is a flawed design and not to be used at all. Or: typical Master Lock.
I wonder if you would be able to single pin pick this lock in a realistic environment. By this I mean mounted on a disk, less than 18” from the ground while you kneel next to it having to deal with a loose lock flopping around and looking around to make sure you don’t get caught. I’ve noticed most good lock pickers like you, Bosnian Bill and others do a great job at picking but never do it in a realistic environment.
The thing is most thiefs are looking for the bike that's the easiest to get into usually by brute force means. A thief isn't going to go through all that trouble if the lock on the bike next to the one with this lock on it looks like it would be easier to bypass.
Nice picking LPLAWYER! It's obvious by the warranty that Master lock Co has over spent money on the structural integrity of the locks and must not care at all that 90% of these high structural integrity locks have the worst piece of shit core thus the warranty states indirectly by the lack of warranty coverage if the lock is manipulated and only if physically destroyed by force. I am beginning to wonder why Master is still in business. Although, some people can't afford the real high security locks so that has to be the only thing keeping them in business.
Brian C That sounds like you are looking for a reason to glorify this Master pieces of shit. They don't warranty against picking because they know how sub par these products are and they don't want to pay for their lack of high security shit they call high quality. Master knows all to well that the company is focused on visual attraction of what seems like a good product that is frankly all shit products which only have the visual attractions of shiny and pretty products and won't focus on the actual fact that their security is shit!
I honestly wonder why Master haven't taken action against your videos yet, you always put them in a bad light (and with good reason) and show to the general public how crappy their locks are. You would expect a big company like that to file lawsuits for stuff like this. Perhaps they don't even know about your videos?
I'm not a lawyer but I play one one the internet. I don't see how you can be the object of litigation for telling/demonstrating factual information. ML makes a LOT of money selling poor security locks and the market keeps buying them. For that corporation to litigate against Bosnianbill or LPL, they risk bringing down upon themselves a lot of exposure that I don't think they are really chomping at the bit to get. I think they want that particular dog to stay lying peacefully.
+Alien Kitten Master did send a cease and desist letter to Bosnian Bill once regarding one of his parody videos. Nothing came of it. As to why they leave us alone, I suspect it has something to do with the Streisand effect.
pretty useless for everyone who has non ventilatied(not sure wether those exist on bikes) or pattern ventilated rotors where the thing cannot even be applied
So much of the higher end Master products are solid and well built. But from what I'm seeing it all comes down to not wanting to spend the last $.40 on a decent lock core. a million dollar body with a ten cent brain... that works in some contexts. ;-)
They have to make it easy to pick, otherwise they may have to pay the $1500 warranty price.
The continuing joke that is Master lock.
This one certainly is.
Too bad the people who are smart enough to pick locks are also smart enough to not steal people's property.
Great Video as always, really enjoy your channel.
Thank you.
does impressioning with the body of a soft plastic bic pen still work. I remember doing that as kid 30 years ago.
It can. I've never had much luck with it.
1 position tubular locks always make me smile .. btw. you mentioned several times that impression tool only works if the springs are all same tensions and driver pins same length. Can you elaborate ? IMHO impressioning should work as long as the pins bind when pushed beyond correct height.

LOL... and they do it because they can!
Expect literally nothing less from Masterlock. Seriously... how can anyone who works for Masterlock sleep at night????
It's baffling. Some of their products are like this, and other are not bad at all. That the difference is usually small things...
Ouch! I think that say it all...
That's about right.
Watching some of your older videos, it appears as though tubular locks are a waste of time and money. Are there any decent ones on the market, or is this a lock type to avoid? Seems like none have variable tension springs, and can easily be single pin picked. Love the channel!

This is exactly what drew me to love complicated locks, destructive entry is proof of a crime and then insurance does the heavy lifting.
i feel these are designed to be used in conjunction with other security devices to just slow attackers down
Great video ty. I don't remember seeing where you got that tension wrench for tubular locks. Any help would be appreciated..thank you again.

LockPickingLawyer ty
Great review brother and thanks for sharing it with us
Where did you get that tensioning tool? I've been looking all over the place for one like that.
Master lock: No force allowed ✋
LPL: OK, hold my coffee ☕
1...2...3...4
LPL: give me back my coffee, please 👌
What is that round thing, like a screw, on the bottom of the lock? Can you use that to unscrew the cylinder and replace it?
very nice picking again thank you👍👍
Thanks.
Well it makes a nice paper weight....
A very pretty one!
Jess Hull I have no use for ML locks nor do I have a cycle anymore but I ordered this lock because it is a very attractive lock. I guess I'll just pick it a few times and find some papers to weight down... ;-)
haha yeah I was thinking of getting one for the same! it looks like it would be nice to hold and fidget with.
Jess Hull Definitely agree!
So... which one would be a good disc lock, if all of them can be picked? One that is super though and mean looking?
Maybe the Xena X1, X2, or X3? And using a u lock? Two locks so thieves do not want to spend the extra time and get caught? a sound alarm? a hidden fuel by pass valve? hidden disconnect switch?
Thanks..
Xena, that's what I use
Carlos Cal If the lock looks mean they're less likely to mess with it. Most thieves are incompetent to picking.
Sorry, but I don't know enough about rotor locks to recommend one... this one (and another really cheap one) just happened into my collection by accident (purchasing a large lot).

Hey LPL, where did you get your tubular tension tool? I really like that one
Usalockpicks.com
Does he ever try the bolt extractor in this lock? Recently he's been looking for a solid steel disk brake lock, well wouldn't lpl have this in his inventory?
I don’t have this one anymore. Sorry.

+Drew w I've got a Harley ignition switch inbound... stay tuned. 👍
Now I want to see if the core can resist a screw and a gear puller.
Doubt it.
Who makes that impressioning tool?
HUK. Available from most of the usual suspects over in China.
Thanks LPL
That tubular tension wrench is impossible to find on the internet
A *very* attractive lock! Master lock makes a very strong and durable product. Until I became interested in Locksport I really thought they were the best lock out there. Oh well, the marketplace remains uninformed and Master lock keeps making the big bucks.
Oh! Upon reviewing your video, I see either a drain hole or possibly a set screw below the key-wayj. Is this core removable? Probably not but just thought I'd ask.
That is a pin, presumably holding the core in.
at 5.23 you remark that pin 3 felt overset. How does that feel - like there is no 'rattle' on the keypin as it's trapped above the sheer line?
On these locks, a set pin will have a little springiness to it. I pushed it past the springiness, and it caught (i.e., overset). The only way to recover is to release a little tension and hope you don't drop too many pins before the one you are trying to release.
Where did you get that style tensioner
USALockPicks.com
But can it withstand the bolt extractor?
where did you get that tension wrench
usalockpicks.com
Where do you get the torque tool?
L. P. L. ,
Let me say 1st off...
Great video (as always)
I do have a question...
Worst part is that I would forgot to remove the lock and try to ride away.
LOL... yeah, you don't get far, I'd assume. Hopefully no damage to the bike.
Hence why the reminder cables to your handlebars exist.
sorry you lost me on this lock, why would this lock have pins to pick? Is it not just a push and turn lock?
I'd hate to approach my motorcycle (back when I rode in the late 90s) and see *additional* disc brake locks. I'd have to leave my own lock in place, have my motorcycle towed home, and then have to remove the thief's lock(s).
I wish you could disassemble this lock to improve it.
Oh, snap! If it can't be picked, field expedient way to remove these might be a diamond grit wire saw... hidden somewhere on your bike. Stick it through the top of the slit, and saw it in half.
I didn't know picking was considered a Guile attack. I'm only familiar with sonic boom and flash kick. More of a Chun-Li guy myself.
most people can't pick there nose let alone a lock I think your master lock is safe
Not from me it's not. :-P
Well, physical security might be more important than pick resistance, but if a lock has such a glaring weakness, it is a flawed design and not to be used at all.
Or: typical Master Lock.
Agreed.
Did you literally just admit you break into locks regularly?
You're a lawyer right? Why would you not see them seeing that picking is technically making the lock fail by applying force in an unnatural way?
I wonder if you would be able to single pin pick this lock in a realistic environment. By this I mean mounted on a disk, less than 18” from the ground while you kneel next to it having to deal with a loose lock flopping around and looking around to make sure you don’t get caught.

Drew Estes The reason the warranty does not cover picking is to stop you opening the lock with the key and claiming the lock was picked.
Brian C That sounds like you are looking for a reason to glorify this Master pieces of shit. Master lock- Master of what?
Master of deception. It pretends to be a lock when it's a poor excuse for a paper weight
It would be a lot harder to pick a lock like this with alarm if it is really on disc ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
By forceful means...Mhm you stand more chance of breaking the disk brake than breaking the lock of the brake.
"A little bit longer"? It took you 5 seconds with the impressioning tool and roughly 85 seconds with the pick!
Right, so it’s a lot longer,.
A closed shackle padlock would work better.
If you could find one that fit through the disk brake.
LPL doesn't even need to put picked in his titles anymore it's just assumed.
deep sigh
Agreed.
and then one day, you are a bit sleepy and in a hurry and you trash your bike, because you forgotten to take it off
+0815Skorpio Possibly. That's why they have reminder flags.
I honestly wonder why Master haven't taken action against your videos yet, you always put them in a bad light (and with good reason) and show to the general public how crappy their locks are. LockPickingLawyer also, what with you being a lawyer and BB an EOD tech (who is friends with a lawyer), neither of you is precisely a soft target.
