Many years ago in the 80's , my wife and I were in a horse and carriage in Orlando riding through the downtown when the hack driver began quoting this very Poe poem. This was during a beautiful night and the ride could not have been any finer. Citing this poem flawlessly, the hack driver brought Poe to life and it was as Poe was so sad about losing the love of his life. It was a highly engaging citation afterwhich we had a discussion of Poe as we strolled through the streets on that fine beautiful night. The spirit of Annabelle Lee was present with Poe that night in downtown Orlando under the pale moon light as the mists began to appear and the poem ended.
I thank you Geoff for bringing that wonderful memory back to me. Your voice was strangely similiar to the hack driver but your pronunciations were a little different on certain words. The hack driver cited for us a couple of other short stories by Poe flawlessly and all from memory as if I was in the presence of the author himself. Poe was a very deep man in touch with life's strange pitfalls. Thank you again !
Ha ha, at first I thought you were calling your driver a hack because he was reciting the poem poorly, as in "He's terrible! What a hack!" Then I read on and grasped the actual meaning.

Thank you for sharing that wonderful story. 😊 For myself, it touches on memories with my oldest daughter ❤ at 13... it was Edgar Allen Poe.... not Hansen who It at the time was the biggest thing 😊 (A couple of years ago she went to a Hansen concert, says it was a blast) we were at Costco and there was this huge "Tomb" Hard Cloth Bound complete works of said writer. She squealed like she was a typical teenage girl 😃
You have to know, she is my intellectual.... acting like that was too undignified lol so, needless to say.... She has it to this day.... She's been working on the music side of things non-profit Canada and is now moving into the movie side of things. That self- professed Nurd who was a square peg in a round hole... Lead flute Band, and marched to her own tune 😀 is doing things that are amazing....

Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite writers, and I absolutely love when you narrate stories
There's a theory that he died due to being one of the many that were kidnapped and forced to vote a certain way in an election (people were taken from the streets or their families threatened, or were forced to drink heavily). After the fact, they would be released where ever, and many would die from alcohol poisoning.

Interesting how so many have commented on how romantic this poem is but not how incredibly creepy it was to lie down in the sepulchre - tomb - next to his dead love.
I take that part as being a metaphor. The narrator is describing the tomb as being in another kingdom and he is watching the moon and the stars every single night, so it sounds like he is sleeping rough/homless under the sky in another part of the world. This homeless, foreign man imagines that every night his soul travels back to visit Annabelle Lee's tomb. Still a bit creepy (would be less creepy if he imagined that her soul came to him) but not nearly as creepy as taking it literally.

Maybe you just have never felt that reckless headlong all-encompassing love. His love is tragic, he valued himself solely by the love they shared. She was his everything, taken from him, and in his sorrow he laid one last time by her side, truly a broken man.
It's not creepy when you're that deeply in love with someone. It really is romantic. To have such a strong love with someone that not even death can take away what you feel for that person. And it's actually quite sad and lonely. Because even as Edgar stated in the shortest poem he ever wrote, "deep in earth my love is lying, and I must weep alone". It's tragic, haunting, romantic and beautiful, and something that few experience in the short life we have to live.
Simba lays next to his father in The Lion King after his passing, as does Littlefoot with his mother in The Land Before Time. It's a sign of how distraught he is over her loss, that he would do anything to spend just that little bit of extra time with her, though she's already gone.
As someone also with a deep voice, let me just say that Geoff's ability to never sound bored by his subject or generally sleepy is incredible to me. That's often been my trouble with reciting poetry the few times I've done it.
I'm mesmerized by the hypnotic voice of Geoff. So beautiful! Well done! I love Edgar Allan Poe's work. ☺️

This is an amazing interpretation! I used to read it more rhythmically, in a more fast way, but this is like a lullaby - considering the choice of Poe's poetry - it makes the "lullaby" even more precious.

This takes me back in time. Back in the mid sixties I had an English teacher who had a voice that was very deep who, on occasion, would take and entire period and read poems to the class. I particularly remember when he read "The Raven" by Poe. You sound almost exactly the same as he did!
EDIT: Oh boy. I just went back to your page and found that you did "The Raven". I'm going to wait a while and then go back and listen to it! See how long I can last. 😁

I fell in love with Poe’s writings when I was 13. I actually stole his book of collected writings from my school. I still have it almost 40 years later. He was my inspiration to write my own poetry which really helped get me through my teen years. Thank you for reading some of his works!

A piece that doesn't need anything fancy. It just needs to be calmly quoted, and attentively listened to.
This has been one of my favorite poems. In English class, I asked to read it. My voice rose and fell as the waves rushing to and from the shore. When I was finished the whole class laughed at me. I was the geeky girl, long before geek was kewl. As I left the room in tears, I heard the teacher say I read it as it was suppose to be read. But that never stopped their reticule of me. I'm glad you picked it out for one of your readings.
My mother read this to me when I was a little girl. Even very small, I was enchanted by the prospect of such a love happening to me. It was a special poem between us. Thanks for the listen.

We had to memorize this in 6th grade. If we could recite it word for word without messing up we’d get to pick something out of our teachers prize bucket. I still remember it 27 years later word for word.
I memorized "Annabelle Lee" and "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" at an extremely young age, early elementary school, long before I truly understood either. I'm 64 and still remember both.

I'm not disparaging the voice but more the lyrical flow maybe but this is the 3rd different reading I've listened to of Annabel Lee this evening and all I can say is the Mrs. Campbell would have a conniption if I had recited this poem in 8th grade English the way these readers have. While it has a tinge of sadness to it, it's not inherently a sad poem. It's actually quite happy while being dark as Poe most always is. JMHO
