    part of the public acceptance of cargo pants may due from the resurgence of outdoor activities by urban middle class (hiking, mountaineering, off-roading, fishing).

    I think they crossed over into the public during the Vietnam war. War surplus has always been a thing since WW2 but post ww2 nobody wanted to wear their old uniforms and their demob suits looked nothing like their uniforms. I'd imagine some wore them to do the garden or whatever but not on the high street. Cargo shorts are a direct result of cut-off OD Jungle trousers. Counter culture appropriated surplus and lots of vets would wear their uniforms etc as a statement/protest.

    I have three pairs of the 5.11 Stryke pants. The first two were perfect, but I picked up a few pounds so bought a third, and the FIT and construction was NOT the same. Turned out I wasn't the only one who has made this observation. So I'll be looking at TruSpec, Propper, and the good old Govt issue. I'm 59, already served, already been tactical for real, so I couldn't care less about what someone else thinks !

      I remember reading a story about some British unit which had a few field stoves from WW1. Not reproduction, not similar ones, but the exact ones they'd carried into WW1. Over a hundred years old.

    A German soldier (or command) said that their favorites from captured troops were French wine, British clothes, and American cigarettes. This quote was reinforced when the Germans were winning early North African campaigns against the British. At the time they were wearing "good" uniforms but were impractical for the deserts. So against uniform regulations, they got rid of their long trousers and knee high boots for British army shorts and ankle height boots.

  • @Khemtime

    Found this really interesting because I’ve always been annoyed that cargo pants are looked at as “tactical pants”. I always just liked them because of the functionality but worry they give off the impression that you’re trying hard to be an operator wannabe and could possibly be a giveaway that I’m carrying a concealed gun or at least draw attention to myself. Didn’t know it was the other way around and that they were originally designed for the military.
    Would be cool if you could share the story of 5.11. I heard their origin story on a podcast.

    • @TheRealAaronSmith
      @TheRealAaronSmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends greatly on the design and pattern. Many pockets(particularly calf/knife/light pockets) and/or obvious patterns definitely give off the operator vibe, which may or may not be beneficial at times.
      However, a solid, plain color and conservative amounts of pockets can lend well to function while being at least somewhat discrete, or at least ambiguous.

    RUSH 24 backpack is perfect for carry on while flying. I stuffed mine for a 2 week trip with most of all the clothing I would need. It fits in the overhead perfectly ( using the compression straps to cinch it down as small as possible). I also carry the 5.11 tactical briefcase and it holds everything else i need for a trip. No checked bags, no lost luggage.

    Does anyone know or if there’s a record shows the drawstring on the pocket of the cargo pant ever been used to “stop the bleeding” during the war? As according to label inside the pant, these drawstrings are designed to secure the items in the pocket. But there are people claiming these were used to stop the bleeding. Just want to figure out the source of that information. Thanks

    Have a few different 5.11 pants but find the Stryke to be best overall comfort and function wise. Only downside is price especially considering most of them are made in Bangladesh nowadays.

    Tbh I initially thought you were gonna say that they were sold to the Germans by US companies before the US entered the war. A little known piece of history is that up until the US official involvement, Germany and Nazism really was not particularly unpopular in the US, and many well-known US corporations, such as Ford for example, continued to do business in Germany throughout the war, producing arms for both sides of the Western Front.
    Hitler also greatly admired the US since childhood, later on basing much of the Holocaust on the US' anti-indigenous policies/genocide, and even named his personal train Amerika in the nation's honour.
