  • Today we test out thermite grenades against different targets like mail box, gaming computer, tank barrel and propane tank! Don't try this at home! Thermite is hot and too bright to watch at bare eyes so you are going to get hurt if you try this at home!

    Fun fact: its common practice to use thermite to burn a tank if you have to abandon it during a battle so that when the enemy claim the tank, all they actually get is some partially melted scrap metal

    • @adamb89
      @adamb89 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      Yep, and the difference between a thermite grenade and a thermate grenade is thermite is designed primarily for antimateriel purposes as you said, while thermate is better used for incendiary munitions due to its explosive properties.
      Matter of fact, that's what their grenades were made of...thermate. Not thermite. Thermate contains an oxidizer.

    Loved that propane tank going up! People don't appreciate just how much is actually in those things. Something like this is a pretty impressive demonstration of just how much energy is there. Honestly, this reminded me of images from 1991 when Saddam Hussein lit the southern Iraqi oilfields on fire to prevent their capture during the Gulf War. Those runaway oil wells shot flames into the sky just like this. Those ones had to be carefully extinguished and capped with huge amounts of concrete. This one, fortunately, will just burn itself out.

    The molten steel left in the end of the tank barrel probably wouldn't cause the barrel to rupture. However, that intense heat inside the barrel kills the metal's heat treatment and weakens it to the point it MAY fail. When it comes to disabling artillery and big guns, troops usually go for the transverse mechanism or the breach. Thermite grenades do wonders on those. Getting one on a tank's engine deck can kill a tank, too.

      @LightbringerDesigns 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I came here to say this; also, if the Bad Guys don't know you did that, when they try to use it again, first shot they try to fire hits that lump welded to the inside - if the design is intelligent, there would be a plug outside the turret to blow off first & relieve the pressure if the barrel is obstructed.
      Otherwise, all those propellant gasses will blow back into the turret.

    If you have access to someone who knows chemistry, you can replace part of the thermite mix with plaster of paris(calcium sulfate) and make a castable thermite.
    The ratios have to be right to make the chemistry right, but you can also change the amount of plaster to control the burn speed.
    We made a high plaster shell and filled it with a faster burning(low plaster) version that gave us a sort of 'shaped charge' that would considerate the heat in one spot and consume it'self completely over time.
    Maybe you can have fun with this idea.

    Man, starting out with obliterating a mailbox... Brings back memories of my childhood.
    ... Now that I think about it, we would probably have been jailed for terrorism if we did the same thing today, because we took ordinary fireworks, extracted the powder and made straight up bombs from it.
    Nothing like starting the new year off with a good oldfashioned IED. :D

    The stuff exploding on the computer is liquid metal in the cooling pipes.
    Gun barrels are heat treated to resist the extreme forces when firing a shell - therefore, the extreme heat of a thermite grenade renders the barrel unusable.
    Greetings from Germany!!

    If you hadn't chained down that tank, maybe you could have pioneered the private Finnish space industry..."and for today's extra content, we launch Finland's first satellite made from parts I got at the hardware store."

    Mythbusters had a Thermite + Ice explosion episode - maybe do one, or try and find a frozen lake to supply the ice for a bigger bang.

    One interesting observation here is that on the propane tank the flame is starting a bit away from the tank. It's about flame propagation speed.

    That cpu cooler got HOT! There's only like 2 drops of water in those cooler tubes, so that was some intense ateam pressure!

    You didn't mention your usual warning in the video, so I assume it's safe to try this at home? But then I read the description. Really loved the propane tank.

    have you thought about 3D printing these with thicker side and top dimensions and a really weak bottom? you could run the fuse through a copper pipe so it ignites bottom -> up, maybe? I’m not sure, I’m just a random person.

    Well this was good news. I had already scheduled a visit to take my old computers to my local Thermite Grenade Computer Data Cleaning Corporation office but I was unsure how well the process works. Now I can feel confident that my data will be safely erased and not recoverable.

    The "heat thing" is a "heat pipe" it is a tiny copper pipe with a drop of water. heat turns the water in it to steam, and it condenses on the cold side (the cooler fins) and the it returns back to the heat side as a water drop again. They are super effective.
    Seems to me that too much heat makes it explode. Yikes!

    wow that was bad ass!!! you should try it with the bigger Tanks you use for welding.. oxygen, and Acetylene..
