I hope you were able to include information on oils that are toxic to animals and also children in the book! So many people don’t realize that they can potentially cause real injury when used around pets and children, depending on the type of oil. ❤️

@@chanel2018-k3z if you want a treat, take a lemon or orange and cut it into quarters, use it for cooking or whatever, then run what is left of it through your disposal (assuming you’ve removed the seeds already for its other uses). It smells SO.GOOD.
I have a hierarchy of uses for lemons in my kitchen, after you use it to make a chicken dish pop you can microwave a bowl of water with a lemon wedge in it and then EASILY wipe clean your microwave, then you can boil lemons in your non-nonstick cookware to get the residue scrubbed off of them easily that builds up in the bottom, then you toss that sucker into the disposal and grind it up to get a lovely smelling kitchen for a few hours. My husband loves it when I do this, so much so he uses lemons before I get to them just to get to that part.
Anyways you can do this alone and it’s great, and if you’ve been using your disposal for food this will help clean the blades and keep it smelling nice. I also like to do baking soda plus vinegar in my drains followed by running hot water for a minute to keep ‘em from getting funky. It’s honestly just a nice little thing I like to do for me, half of the time. The little things, right?

We went on vacation many years ago, and the house we had rented hadn't been aired out in quite some time, though it had been cleaned. When we went in, we were overwhelmed with the smell. We went to the grocery store, and I picked up a bottle of vinegar, we went back to our rental - I put it in the bowl on the kitchen table, opened some windows, and we left for a few hours. We came back - no odors at all. Smelled fresh. This works like a charm, and very quickly.

I live out in the country, but not too close to farm animals. I live in CO and open my windows especially, this summer we have had good amounts of rain and the temps at night in the mid 50's to 60's. I have a cat and scoop his box once a day. I never smell anything bad there. I don't have any particular scent, but I do like lavender essential oil. I just cleaned my furnace filter for fall coming up. I occasionally use murphy soap to clean my wood cabinets. That will remove any film from cooking smells or other smells in the bathroom. Cleaning clothes and bedding is a must as well, regularly. Thank you for all your wise cleaning advice!

I put a paper towel to line the bottom of waste paper baskets and my kitchen trashcan. I put a few drops of essential oil on the paper towel. Rosemary, geranium, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon etc...depending on how I feel. Dual purpose. Keeps the bottom of the can clean. I replace the towel if their are any drips or leaks from the trash bag and helps reduce odor by keeping bacteria count down. Of course, empty trash daily.

I want my house to smell like fresh white flowers, not strong at all, just a gentle wisp of it.
I recently found Lilly of the Valley Essential oil and I started adding 4 or 5 drops on our front door mat and everytime I come home I get a suttle hint of them. It seems the longer the oil is there it smells better so about 3 days in, it smells so soft and clean.

That's an awesome idea! I've used some drops on my light bulbs, a hack I learned several yrs ago, and normally use lavender in our bedroom.. I also sprinkle a few drops on my pillow, inside the pillow case. In addition, in the pillow cases, and pillows, throw or sleeping pillows, and bedsheets, I also sprinkle some baby powder & dryer sheets. I learned that from my Grandma, that passed away when I was only 13, (Wow, 40yrs ago! Just realized that) but I remember her room always smelling sooo fresh, and she told me about that "secret". No one knew what "life hacks" were at the time, but it makes a HUGE difference. I did it in my boys rooms while they were growing up, and now in my grandson's room, especially right before he comes over for the wkend.
I want my house to always smell FRESH, like linen-fresh, rain-fresh, like O just did a bunch of laundry, and you can smell all the fresh laundry throughout my house. I know very little about essential oils...I wonder if they have a linen scent?? That fresh laundered, linen on the line smell makes me feel like my house is spotless clean, even if I only halfway cleaned. The snell makes it feel like I scrubbed the entire house from top to bottom.
I even used to take a shower gel, lotion & body spray or perfume in the same kind of scent when Bath & Body Works were still in business. Miss that store!!

Essential oils help with keeping pests at bay as well. I live in an old building apartment, near water, Spiders abound! They're most active in the spring and fall. I drop lavender oil all around my door threshold down my drains in the bathroom(yes they come up through the drain)on my closet floor, anywhere I know where they have been in the past. It works amazingly, they reall don't like the smell of lavender. I've also planted lavender on my flower bed right outside my door. I guess you have figured out by now, I DON'T LIKE SPIDERS! On a side note, my house doesn't smell like lavender.

As a fellow cat owner (multiple cats), I'm paranoid of my house smelling like cat. We clean litter boxes twice a day, and vacuum constantly. My parents are coming to stay with us and I'd love tips for neutralizing pet odors. Love your channel, btw!

    • @Cyndy101
      @Cyndy101 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

I'm a cat lover as well and all of my life I've battled with the litter box. About a year ago I finally bit the bullet and purchased a Litter Robot. I swear I have only one thing bugging me since I bought it, THAT I DIDN’T BUY IT YEARS AGO! It is genius!!! It works like a charm and I haven't scooped a litter box since. It even empties the litter for you when you want to change the litter. I also go through about 1/5 of the litter I use to with 2 cats. It took about a month for the girls to get use to it. I kept their box next to the robot. They were very nervous about it and I was worried but they eventually warmed up to it and now they love it. They don't dig like they use to or spray litter everywhere anymore because they know it gets cleaned in a few minutes. My life is so different now with that dirty job gone forever.
I purchased the one with the wifi program so that it notifies you if there is a problem. I've never needed it in a year. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I chose the cream coloured unit and it looks so good and never dusty.
I will say they are expensive but 100% the best money I've ever spent for my cats.
I just thought I would mention this to you because I know what a struggle I use to have and now the girls 😸😽 are really happy and I'm beyond happy.

I use the breeze litter system. It has a pad below that absorbs the urine. You change out the pad weekly with one cat. The top of the box has cement like litter that is changed out monthly. To save money you can use pinto beans instead and change more often if you like. My trick is to sprinkle baking soda on the pad each time I change it. It is in a drawer below that the cat can’t access. It really helps to control order between pad changes. Once a month the cement litter is changed. I spray the whole box with a enzyme spray called Bac-Out by Biokleen. I let it sit for 5 minutes or longer. Then it’s all rinsed with hot water. During the winter I run a small air purifier next to the box also.

    • @Cyndy101
      @Cyndy101 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@margaretf6147 Definitely more work and effort. I don't have a laundry tub to rinse out any litter box materials. I will say that the litter robot has zero odour issues because the litter drops into a lower sealed compartment. I literally only have to slide the drawer open pick up the bag filled with the waste and place a new one in and close the drawer. To empty I press a button and the litter drops into the waste drawer and bag, I pick it up and put a new bag in. The best part is the litter box doesn't touch the waste at any point so it requires little to no cleaning. I just add a scoop of fresh litter every few days to the drum because it does eventually require refilling but that is about the extent of my efforts every couple days. I change the waste bag weekly and that takes less than 2 minutes at the most. I also have no additional costs other than regular litter and glad kitchen bags that I use for the waste liner.

I recently switched to Pretty Litter and it lives up to it’s ads IMO. MUCH LESS ODOR, and for what’s left over I've always kept a couple of activated charcoal sachets near the box. I buy them premade and they're good for a couple of years, you just stick them in direct sunlight for 2 hours once a month to recharge. Good luck

They’re especially great for people who have a hard time remembering to change their filter because it can be done by the tech when they have their annual or bi-annual furnace maintenance appointment.

I absolutely love Linen and Lavender wallflower plugs from Bath and Body Works. It just gives me a happy feeling every time I get a whiff of it. It’s not overpowering. I also have a diffuser for those days when I want an extra boost of aromatherapy. I diffuse peppermint/lavender or peppermint/grapefruit combos. In the summer, the trash stays outside. I leave a small bucket for trash in the kitchen which I empty everyday.

I’m disabled so these help keep my house smelling clean. No energy to clean every day and deep cleaning* a few times a year takes me over a week. Vinegar and water with some lemon is my go to all purpose cleaner. Sprinkle baking soda on carpets twice a month then vacuuming helps. I live near the Jersey shore. The humidity is awful. In a home I lived in two years ago I used to mix just a small amount of sandalwood with water and spray a little every now and then. It was such a beautiful warm smell !!!
In a closed media room I mixed bergamot with lavendar in a plug in diffuser and when my husband and I would go to watch TV it would smell so good.
I also used the vinegar in the bowls thing back when my dog got skunked!!!
    It actually helped.😁

I once bought a diffuser but decided to throw it out before I even took it out of the box, when I heard how most oils are very dangerous to animals (which, as you mentioned, is the primary source of odors) - they have a much more powerful sense of smell that, although oils may not kill them instantly, over time damage can be done to their bodies, so much so and so slowly you may not corelate the two. I know some say there are some that are safe around pets - but, frankly, I don't take that chance. I'm all for odor elimination - as you mentioned, however. I hope you strongly warned people in your book. My other concern is if oils can harm animals, isn't it possible it can harm us and we don't even realize it - like a miner's canary.

This video came at a perfect time! My Hubby and I were working away from home and we were gone for 5 days. Our house was closed up and when I came in it smelled stale. Not bad but just not how I wanted it to smell (BTW...I want my house to smell like fresh air or neutral). I'm really not sure what the source of the smell is. I live in a home that was built in 1900...we have done renovations and made it into our dream home. Our crawl space does have an opening into our main floor so that may be the cause of smelling stale. I do keep my home pretty clean. I may try charcoal or baking soda. Also, I think if I would have left a fan on while we were gone it would have circulated the air preventing the stale smell. I'm interested to know if anyone else has experienced this with their home.

First off , I make sure all garbage & waste cans were emptied & clean as folks would be in a hurry to leave & forget this . Then I'd regularly / daily open windows when I was at clients' homes doing different tasks ; I'd also do what I called a "welcome home prep " the day before or day of clients return - lots of fresh air , windows open , ceiling fans on , lemon scent or whatever the client used rinsed down kitchen / bath drains /toilets . Pet dishes sparkling clean & if possible , I laundered pet bedding . One weekend or one month , I wanted it to be nice to come home to .

We have a vacation rental cabin and I prefer it to smell like nothing as you say. This to me means we are not hiding or masking anything. While I love nice scents, when our housekeeper gets done it smells good. It doesn’t matter if the house isn’t cleaned right. Often times I am redoing the cleaning after I inspect. When I leave after cleaning, there is little to no scent. I am big on using varying strengths of Dawn, vinegar, water and sometimes lemon juice for everything floor to ceiling except the toilet. Some guests leave behind more odors than others and I will use a linen scented disinfectant spray on the entire house. I find opening windows running the ceiling fans and changing or airing out the bed coverings and throw rugs will freshen the inside air better than sprays. If its not clean, it doesn’t smell clean. We are in the woods. I would prefer a natural woodsy smell if I had a choice.

I do run a garbage disposal cleaning pod through it once a month and sometimes bleach if I’ve had a lot of meat juice go in there. We have 4 large trashcans in the kitchen so when a bin gets full we take it out and I spray the inside with Lysol spray and then put a new bag in every time. I like the clean smell of peppermint and thyme in my cleaning solutions. It gives the house a fresh clean scent.

I use tidy cat pure and simple clumping cat litter unscented. I have been very happy with it. I clean it free of clumps several times a day, and clean the whole box and change the litter every month. This is what my vet uses in her clinic. My cat was having alot of wheezing going on when I was using any litter that was scented. My vet told me not to use scented litter. I sometimes add baking soda also. Another thing is I add a doggie pad under the litter to absorb urine but find even urine clumps very well with Tidy cat. You can get 40 pounds for $23.

A good deodorizer is listerine mouth wash. It was originally sold as a floor wash.after cleaning your bathroom and kitchen wipe hard surfaces down with a spray bottle of listerine. It’s good in drains as well.

Wow, that's really cool! I love it as a mouth wash -- had no idea it could be used as a cleaning product, too!

I live in an old house from the 1800s that we are restoring and I seem to be the only one that notices the smell. We got cinnamon scented broom decoration that made the smelliest part smell so much better. I'm hoping as we restore the house it will start to smell better.

I know what you mean 😏 Very old houses that have un-renovated portions have a "smell" 🙂

I like a very light floral scent in my home but I have to say, if you've ever gone into a hotel that has that fresh/spa-ish scent oh boy love it! Whatever that is I would love to smell that when I walk thru the door lil

My house smell changes by the day. Usually, I'd say it smells neutral. But when dishes get stacked up or the trash needs to be taken out, it starts to wreak. I am a fan of scent beads in certain wash especially curtains because at least for a short period of time my house smells amazing! But they really do not last long.
