I owned 77 vw Rabbit, 1.7. 1978 Scirocco champagne edition, and a 1988 VW 16V Scirocco. All owned in my 20’s back in the 80’s. I updated the 78 Scirocco to a 1.8 with a close ratio trans. Koni shocks with Neuspeed sport springs and a 28mm rear sway bar front 22mm. Yokohama tires. That car was fast agile and handle amazingly. I had put that same setup on the 88 16v Scirocco and never came close to the handling of the 78. It was to heavy, and to long. It always felt out of balance. I wish I never sold my 78 Scirocco for the 16v. I now own a 81 Scirocco ‘S’. Mars red. I love that car. I’m 68 years of age now, and that car still brings a smile to my face. 😊
Had Both. My 1st VW was a mk1 Scirocco GLi, so a 1.6 Gti engine 4 speed, and my god what fun that car was. I bought it off my Dad, who replaced it with a Mk2 Scirocco 1.8Gti, and we both agreed the Mk1 was more fun. More rev happy, snappy and handled better. The mk1 golf's were equally brilliant not much between them apart from looks which I think Scirocco's are very nice
nicely done gentlemen. I have a mk2 from 1991, an 1.8 16v and i love it. But i also started with the mk1 1.6. I have many nice memory's on that one too.
Great video. I had a1979 Scirroco (85 bhp) which after a VW Beetle felt like a Ferrari especially with its 3 spoke steering wheel and single wiper. I sought a Scirroco GLi but as they're so rare I ending up getting a 1982 1600 Golf GTI and now have a 1983 1800 Golf GTI which I have had since 1988. The Scirroco is more fun to drive due to the driving position and as the 1600 power is higher up the rev range so it's a screamer but my 1800 Golf definitely has more torque lower down and is faster than the 1600 Golf. However, if I could find a decent Scirroco Mk1 GLi, GTI or Storm I'd definitely get one but there rare as as hens' teeth.
I bought my second Scirocco in 1985, a 1978 GTI with a wonderful 110 hp and then modified with ATS wheels and a Bilstein suspension. I loved this car and unfortunately I had to take it out of service in 1990 due to severe rust. Although I have driven powerful to extremely powerful super sports cars to this day, no car has given me as much pleasure as my Scirocco. I am looking for a GTI model because I would like to have that feeling back 😁
In 1984 I was 17 and had a 1979 Scirocco. I loved it. That year, a friend of mine got a brand new GTI. I remember being impressed by the GTI, it was faster and handled better. The Scirocco feels snappier because you're lower to the ground, but it's not faster. I know because I used to race my friend back then all the time.
Great vid gents thank you! Both have the same chassis (A1 platform) so interesting to see your take on different handling. And of course, the Scirocco proceeded the Golf by just 4 months or thereabouts to test the mechanics. So in actual fact, they were the first 'Hot Hatch' and not the Golf as many say. I drive an 82 Mk2 Scirocco and it still gives me a stupid grin!! 😁👍🇬🇧
My first 'proper' car a 1980 Mk1 storm in schwartz - never been close to that much fun in a car since, shame it rusted away before my eyes! if I had a garage I would buy this in a heart beat - but these need to be cosseted as are now so rare, they can't be left on an east London street 😞
My brother had the storm and I had the golf both fantastic cars back in the 80s you sat in the storm and sat on the golf we felt , golf handled the corners better tho
In 1977 a friend’s father took me and his son to a matinee showing of the Woody Allen film, Annie Hall. He took us in a silver Scirocco with tartan upholstery and it was the most existing experience of my life, at that stage. The car was automatic and I can tell you for nothing; the auto version is twice the car that the manual is. It was like being in a space ship, it seemed to glide effortlessly to any speed without a sound.
Great review lads, I am a biker but I do have one car, a mk2 'Rocco GTX , that only comes out on sunny days. It's the 8valve, with the 1.8 dx engine, Jetex exhaust and a warmer cam, it is so much fun. They are getting rarer and rarer, there must be hundreds of golfs for every scirocco still on the road, and unlike most of the golfs the sciroccos were made by kharman. Next time can we see under the bonnet of each of the cars ? 😀subbed.
My dad looked for many years for a mk2 storm to replace his mk2 1.6 GTi. At least twice I remember turning up to view a car which was sold as we arrived. Scirocco Storm only available in metallic Brown and metallic pale blue in mk1 and mk2 if I recall correctly

I bet that 16v felt a lot better than a lot of other cars though, not that I have one or anything…
@@67loowit_scarab57 that it did. That is probably I used that car as my daily driver till 2009. That was a long time. 😵💫
In 1984 I bought a used 1980 Scirocco S with a 5-speed for college, I loved that car. It's my favorite car I ever owned, great memories!

The Storm is a great car. The Golf is iconic though. I would love another Storm having driven one in the mid eighties.

I own a mk 1 golf gti love it but I prefer the scirocco.

What a great video thanks for uploading brought me back to when my dad had Scirocco not a storm just a standard mk1 still loved it!
Totally agree the 1.6 is more fun than 1.8. Maybe 1.6 geared better than 1.8 gearbox.
I have a Scirocco 1.6 GTI waiting to be restored!.
It’s not TNU347X is it? I’d love to think my dads old one is still kicking about somewhere.

I want the rocco
I'd love the test to be between the 1.6 golf gti and that storm. The 1.6 engine was great.
love the Golf great video

Is that one for sale? put it on the boat ill take good care of it.

Man I had a 76 and an 82 Scirocco but I never heard of a storm . Possibly not in the US ?
UK only, there was a Storm in the Mk1, Mk2 and Corrado
My dad looked for many years for a mk2 storm to replace his mk2 1.6 GTi. At least twice I remember turning up to view a car which was sold as we arrived. Scirocco Storm only available in metallic Brown and metallic pale blue in mk1 and mk2 if I recall correctly
Vw mk1 ❤❤❤
He is bored ,we are not ❤
I had both when I was 18 should never of sold them I'm still deeply upset about it
If You enjoy driving that Scirocco so much, try driving a corrado.
The 1.6 is a much sweeter engine than the 1.8, and the 1.6 has a much cammier profile... zings above 4k. :)
