Josh you never handle that aeriator from behind it. It nearly rolled on to your legs just in the demo. Also it's lethall just parked. What I did was put a square tubing frame and mesh cage over it. I noticed in your videos your very cavalier about safety around your implements. There is a reason farming is one of the most dangerous occupations. Safety preceeds all else.

Bolt on forks look like a good way to bend a bucket to me you are also a lot farther out from your pivot point on your front end loader meaning the leverage prevents you from picking up nearly as much as a dedicated fork mast if you have a quick attach bucket its no problem at all swapping and takes virtually no time

@stonyridgefarm , I’ll speak for your bearings , top link n 3pt. “ please pick us up when using ground engaging tools n well last you a long long time. “ we set up everything to be pulled straight. Each disc blade or aerator tooth along with its frame get twisted pretty good. That’s the beauty of 3pt is we can pick it up. Any pull type with lift should be raised as well when turning. A lot of leverage cranking a rear gang of discs. Bigger tractors won’t sweat this extra stress til you see a draft arm trashed. Also lift those 3 pt arms when using any pto n lock them up. Bad day mowing n making a turn after they slack out. Just my 2 cents. Not my place to tell another man how to farm his land but I enjoy helping,

I was Yelling at the screen, "it's going to roll, watch your shins" when you were hooking up. we have wedge blocks for all implements, and pallets to set stuff like the broadcast spreader on, got them from a local hardware from the dumpster, they are plastic, and aerators bounce on our soil, we use a lot of Revive to help with water retention and we have a compost pile the size of a semi truck. if you want more weight in it use beet juice. thanks for the fun

Such a cool implement. Thanks for sharing the information on it. I will be looking at one for my pastures. I did notice in the video that your top link was to short, which could put the lift arms in a bind and cause some damage. Just lengthen the top link so the side rails of the frame where the roller bearings are, are level, not tipped down at the front. Just a tip from someone that's been there, done that and destroyed a tractors hydraulic rock shaft.

Try parking/ storing/ unhitching the broadcast spreader on a few sturdy pallets. Also works well for some brush hog and other 3pt implements. We park our brush hog on 2 large round logs- makes on/off easier.
Dont fall for the gimmick of a quick hitch- they are great for certain heavy tillage and some particular items on dead-flat ground.
Mostly just a gimmick by skinny little wimps with 20hp utility yard tractors who think they're saving time hook ing up stuff in their paved garage in the suburbs

Always use it after it's rained and dried out just a bit, also, always lift it off the ground when making any turn, not just sharp ones. I'm guessing you noticed how much harder the tractor is to steer when you don't lift the aerator. It's very hard on the lower lift arms of the tractor to turn without lifting the aerator, I broke one of the attachment points for the turnbuckle on one arm not lifting my aerator before turning. Just a heads up, keep up the great videos, I like them.

2 things off the top of my head.
Use some scrap materials and build some landing gear for that spreader.
Look into deep soil aeration in patches that may not see any or very little improvement from just a roller type aerator. Deep soil aeration will also help with areas that hold water longer than they should. Hard pan that you can't see is a booger.

I'm not a Homesteader and I don't have acres of land.... however I prefer aerators that take out a 3" or 4" of soil when aerating clay soils.
Yes those soil plugs look unsightly until you next cut the grass as it will pulverize those soil plugs and the soil will be spread over grass surface.
The good thing about the plugs is you could thinly spread sand or compost over the grass some of which will fill in the plug holes when you cut the grass or even water the grass. Getting the sand or compost into those plug holes in the clay will stay open longer allowing water or sand into the ground improving the soil if you do this once a year over several years ( after all we bought the aerator) any application of fertilizer should now stay on the grass or work it's way easier into the soil rather getting washed off the grass into the creeks etc.
Yes it's more work but I think it would be worth it....

Just a thought, but you might consider, near the end of the growing season, to let the grass go to seed before mowing, then disc (not till) it up to put all that mown grass into the soil without disturbing it too much. Then all the seed can sprout and start a new crop before the weather gets too cold.

I hope you'll become a channel member at some point in the future...you'll get some sneak peaks in real time here on the farmMan...thanks ...so I've been studying grasses....weeds and pasture so much lately. One thing that I've seen...and will make mention of in many future vids.....letting grass go to seed is not the way to stimulate growth....over eons of time grasslands have been grazed intensively ....pummeled by large herbivores..stimulating the roots and growing grass....my lawn turf has never ever gone to seed....and it's the best grass on the farm! The secret is feeding that "green manure" back to the land....establishing root systems in our pasture/turf....root systems that are an ecosystem.....mowing grass during the vigorous growth cycle...before it bolts out the seed head....aerating....all of this memicks the herbivore......the 10 foot deep top soil on the great plains of America....all brought on by intensive grazing...and root stimulation from bison....this is what we are doing here on the farm..I've let it go to seed for 3 years ....since we've started mowing intensively the grass is taking over...the weeds are subsiding and the root systems are spreading......I'll do a dedicated vlog to this very soon in the fall.....there has been an unbelievable change in our farms grasslands!

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Thank you for being such a great example of the true American Dream: hard-working, positive attitude, and humble.
The following is just discussion, not argument. I'm asking because I want to learn. I've only read a little, and you're actually doing the real thing. I get the mowing before going to seed, like you've mentioned on other videos. Keep it growing at the fastest pace, so you turn more carbon dioxide and nitrogen from the air into organic matter. My question is: when do you get it mixed into the soil?
I read an interesting book called "The Ploughman's Folly" (published in 1945). It said that DEEP plowing (ploughing - the writer is British) upset the microbes in the soil. He actually did the opposite of what you're doing. He wanted to take poor soil with weeds (and grass) and turn it into rich soil for crops. He disced (not plowed or tilled) his fields (only 2-3" deep) before the grass went to seed. He kept doing this as new grass sprung up. Let it grow, then disc before it went to seed. Eventually, all the seeds in the field (except those that might blow in) germinated and sprouted. When he was done, he had rich soil without grass or weeds.
That's what made me think of discing at the very end of the growing season, when the grass is about to go dormant anyway. The growing grass would be upset, but the new seeds would sprout, and all the green manure would get mixed into the soil.
Of course, you mentioned that your lawn is super healthy, and you never till or disc that, so I guess it isn't necessary. Answered my own question, I guess! Once you have cattle, they'll stomp it into the soil anyway.
Looking forward to watching the Fence Video that just got posted this morning, Woooooo!

If you were to put some anti freeze into the roller, there would be no need to empty as modern anti freeze also have an inhibitor in them that will stop rusting. This is why you should keep anti freeze in the vehicle engine all year round, even if you live in an area that never freezes..

If I had to take a guess the reason why it's awkward to hook up is because it's setting on the ground and you physically have to move it to get the arms connected. If you have it on blocks it's already lifted, so you don't have to lift it by hand to connect it.

Could fill it with sand? Don't need to worry about rust or freezing then... I know sand is about 50% heavier than water so you might not need as much, or maybe if you're having issues with not enough weight it could help? Just some random thoughts. I have a roller that's full of sand instead of water.
The Ventrac can have a cat 1 3pt hitch with a hydraulic top link and rear aux for a bunch of mix and match fun. You'll need to take off the 3-n-1 adapter that you use to put the bucket on the rear (or other things).

Sort of off topic, but I also watched your video where that metal building was assembled and I am getting a similar one installed in the next month or two. Please tell me what is the height, at the eaves, of your building....I'm currently trying to decide between a 10 and 12 ft height for a new building on my land. Keep up the great work, I enjoy you videos and your upbeat mentality.

The aerator look like a nice design until I saw the 4 bolts in a row to hold the top link on. personally I think that's a poor design. It wouldn't take much for the manufacturer to add some support going to the back corners and would greatly help with the longevity of the tool. As for the pallet forks they're nice but be careful #1 they move the load out further from the bucket and # 2 they have been known to tear up buckets.

Well bolts have been holding the world together for generations and there are welders that can fix those bolt issues if it comes down to it .... all depends on what he paid for it ... as you all know you get what you pay for ....... notice did not hear anything about made in America .... most likely off shore in which case you might get 5 to 10 summers out of it before something bends or breaks ... I think inside rust will be the biggest issue .... seems to be a big problem with off shore stuff ... great paint outside bear metal inside ready to rust.

Got a beautiful place going....... While I commend your efforts in aeration if your soils are that packed I strongly reccomend a more robust tool such as the Aer-Way (think I spelled it right) pasture renovator. You can get 3 point and trailing type plows. While it may be a little overkill for your lawn areas it will surely be just the ticket for pasture areas where you need good full penetration. I have a neighbor who runs a 12 foot model with tractor weights added and it does a great job. They run a lot of cows so their pasture lands get packed in pretty good. If you could find a dealer maybe you could do a deal for tryout on your channel. By the way don't pick up much with those bucket forks as they won't stand it. Also build a stand for the fert. spreader. Makes hookup a lot easier...........

I am thinking you could probably spread some of that stone dust(?) you have around on top, sweep it in, and that would allow for seepage, and not allow the ground to become as compacted again.
They do this on Golf courses, when the ground becomes compacted to help with the grasses growth. They use sand but I am sure that stone dust you have would probably work even better.
Not sure just thinking out loud, what are your thoughts?

I'll give you some helpful hints. #1- buy Pat's quick hitch system! #2- do not put water in the spiker, put your used oil in it. That way it won't rust out and you have somewhere to put your used oil.... win/win

Stoney Ridge Farmer Very true, even my EA box grader was shipped poorly. The spike aerator works fine, I think I may prefer a plug aerator over the spiked one though. A plug would create more of a hole where as the spike just creates a slit.

I believe the aerator sounds like it may be iron. If it is and your going to keep it full I would use dry fine sand. Two benefits better penetration and increase the life of the piece of equipment. Water will kill that thing pretty fast. Think about it.

      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Lots of folks have said similar things....however filling with sand would overload the frame....and slowly erode the inside of the tank don't ya think? This thing is very similar to a water heater tank...should last for 20 plus years I'd think..but I could be wrong

OK, love your channel, watch it often. But those pallet forks are ridiculous! My smaller tractor is a Kubota B2601. I bought dedicated pallet forks (from Titan) about 3 years ago, at first to get a 900# crated Woodmax chipper out of my truckbed. Skid-steer quick attach type. I use them weekly! They slide perfectly around the "big green trash can", and I easily haul it down the 4000 foot driveway to the road for pickup. How long does it take me to change from pallet forks to bucket and vice versa? About 45 seconds. Have a big log I want to move? Pallet forks. Want to reposition a box blade, pallet forks. Anyway, love your videos. Love your dog. Have 3 GSD's myself!
    Keep posting Brother!
