Thats the risk with magnolias. Frost or wind always a risk during their flowering, but they are stunning and worth it when things go well even if just for some of the flowers. We gardeners are eternal optimists I think.☺☺☺
So sorry about the magnolia. Here in the northern US everything is a month ahead and the fruit orchards are in jeopardy. I hope you enjoy what remnants may still be left of the blossoms that may have survived!
Magnolia trees are a tease. Always happens. When I was a child we had a very large magnolia next to our home. When it was in bloom we could sit at our kitchen and look at the tree through windows near the kitchen table. But I think maybe ever other year it would be hit with a frost and in a day the ground would be covered in mushy brown petals.
Always hit a miss with magnolias here in the Midlands my star magnolia is just opening its buds no frost in the forecast so this year it should be a brilliant display usually 1 in two years the flowers are ruined.
Frost is a pain, I spent one summer and winter a couple of years back dilligently tending to every spur on my wisteria only for some early good weather to set it off and an unusually harsh frost to zap it all so I know your pain. Still the garden is looking lovely and open already with all the work gone into it so far 👍👊
What an absolutely beautiful shape that tree is 😁 What a shame about the flowers but nature has a way of healing and perhaps the other buds yet to open will be magnificent 🙏
Well….. the shape is still awesome and some of the blooms look ok in the video at least. Our temperatures here are nuts. 75°(24°c) by day and dropping below freezing overnight. Poor plants don’t know whether to grow or hunker down.
Bad luck - allways the same gamble with the Magnolia every year ..... i saw my "Genie" properly flowering maybe 6 years ago, but meanwhile I´m quite happy with some later coming bulbs... We cant help the weather !
I feel your pain Joe. I'm in the US in Kentucky zone 6B. I have a 20-foot-tall magnolia variety "Butterfies". It's in bud now and might open in a few days. However, it's going below freezing this weekend. Some years I can only enjoy those beautiful yellow flowers for a day before the frost gets them.
A later flowering magnolia is a good idea, if they don’t get frost damage then wind damage is likely too. On another note you’re looking a bit over exposed today. You need some tips from those beeb film crews 😊
Such is the life of a gardener Joe, we take the best bits when we can 🙂🌿🍄

Do what the fruit growers do; spray them with water so the ice will protect the buds or have a few firepots going in the orchard..
@@moniquemannaert3468 It's worth a try. My star magnolia is in flower right now so I can at least enjoy that one the rest of this week.
:(, such a shame Joe, hopefully as you say the sun will do its stuff for the next few days
