You ever wonder if Shyamalan was watching this movie, saw the award-winning exposition scene, and thought to himself, "That's how it's done! Explaining everything with no emotion or visual direction! I now know what I must do to make my director career a success!!!"
That Miyagi fight scene was so poorly choreographed. I wonder if Pat Morita ever felt like the writers didn't respect him when they make him speak in that exaggerated broken English.
Well I think he had to embrace some of the stereotypes in order to get the role in the first place, they initially didn't want to hire him because they didn't think a comedian could play the role.
So, I think the lesson we all learned from this is to not hire a crazy military guy to be the head of high school security. Good lesson. I think we'll all remember that for a long time.
+Adam Hoffman Yeah, hire a sane one. It actually reminds me of a game called Life Is Strange, where the head of security was a paranoid ex-military officer with ptsd, but who actually turned out to be helpful.
Wow, so many great movies came out in 1984. Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Terminator, Karate Kid, Nightmare on Elm Street, Woobly Bobble and the Amazing Poopamawutzit Chapter II: Electric Boogaloo...
In my high school, we actually had a school security that took classes in Ju-Jitsu and Kickboxing. We took Ju-Jitsu for learning how to disarm the opponent and take the fight to the ground (if necessary) and Kickboxing in case we needed more than just throws. It actually did work quite well too. We barely had any bullies in school because of that. Edit: However, we did have some problems with it. For example, in one instance of ASS (After-School-Suspension and yes we all chuckled when we first heard that), we had 2 bullies who tried to surprise one of the officers (mainly cause they were the only kids in ASS at the time). Luckily, he was very trained for this situation (mostly because he took Muay Thai before training even started for the other officers) and actually broke one of the kids' arms by getting them in a standing arm bar. Twice actually. The first time, he gave them both an option to surrender and stop trying to cause more trouble, so the kids said they will. But then, like an idiot, one of them tried to sucker punch him, and so he got his arm broken after that. And I guess the other kid got scared because of that, because he was barely anywhere outside of the main classes He got suspended for the rest of the year (which wasn't even a whole lot cause this was in the 2nd semester), but he was seen as a hero afterwards. Crazy to think about now that I mention it
That "school security" reminds me of a Swedish novel by Jan Gillou called Ondskan (Swedish for "evil"). The novel is set in 50's Sweden and tells about a violent teenage boy who gets expelled from his school, only to end up in an elite school where a "school council" consisting of bullies from rich families are allowed to abuse younger students in the name of "order", while the teachers don't do shit, and one of the teachers is a Nazi. In the end, the boy defeats the bullies and after graduating, he returns home to teach his abusive father a lesson. It's a good novel and the movie adaptation wasn't bad either.
Prince Stormstrider That description, and the whole school security thing in this movie, both remind me of Kill La Kill( if you took out the extreme violence, wierd humor, and superpowers). You know with a school council that in all fairness would be taken down by the government just for how extreme and abusive it is.
In the first movie, Mr. Miyagi tells Daniel that he never taught anyone karate before. And Miyagi is doing sand the floor on the car, not wax on. The director didnt have a clue about the karate kid.
What was so bad about Karate Kid Part 3? It wasn't really that much of a copycat of the original. It was actually a good idea to have the villain from the first film in there because it's nice to see a bit of why he is as bad as he is. We were told that he went to war once and the war's torture did a lot of psychological damage. Plus they showed that the relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi wasn't perfect, and that Mr. Miyagi, after being with Daniel for 9 months, had started to view Daniel like family.
So the bad guys of this film are introduced with Movin' on Up by M People playing. Not exactly a sinister sound to show they're the antagonists, it's more a sound for camp, dance environment.
Dude... the Next Karate Kid is my second favourite. My first is Karate Kid II. I loved Julie as a character. Feeding a sick Hawk.... and... that scene with the cops is fairly accurate in my life I've found. The weird psycho teacher... is pretty normal in midwestern schools... I thought so any ways. Keep in mind, Julie is the closest to a strong female character that exists in a lot of the media. Seriously... go through media with strong female roles... and put Julie compared to the rest of them. Julie vs. the really rapey student security group. Seriously... every villain in this movie was, "Imma gonna rape you Julie" It is on par with every bad person being all, "you have a purdy mouth... I bet you squeal like a pig." As per what those guys were doing in the dance: trying to impress a girl. I've had guys do that all the time for me. Murder becomes part of the job when there is a cute girl you want to bone. Just... trust me on that.
Matthew Dover No, no, no... it was the main student. The adult's protege if you will. He was wanting to have her raped via his protege. You'll notice that one dude who was all rapey on Julie was the guy who created that security groups' favourite kid. He mostly just wants to enable her rape, to help enforce his ideas that he is giving the school security team.
I don't with you but the psycho teachers in the Midwest thing I agree with. I go to school in Iowa and I swear both my Social Studies teacher is the devils mom. I swear.
This movie wasn't a masterpiece, but it was entertaining with Miyagi returning. It's a classic. Too bad they didn't have some role or at least a cameo for Daniel-san. This and Karate Kid III weren't that good sequels, but they had some good parts nonetheless.
***** Yes that's true. They should have shown Daniel in a scene. Maybe right now he's working at the banzai tree shop him and Miyagi own and/or he started college since he said on the third film that he needs a break from school. (Hopefully, he's not being bullied by John Kreese, Terry Silver, and Mike Barnes without Miyagi around). It's a good thing that Daniel was at least mentioned one time on this movie.
Adrian Dickson Like have him at the start saying sensei, my cousin is in trouble bah bah, please go help her, then he he is missing until the end when he fights along side them. While the movie would still suck, it would be a lit bit better and fit better with the other movies, not the oddball 4th attached. Shame sidekicks is also a rip off of the first, not part of the series, would have made a better third imho.
The Next Karate Kid and The Karate Kid III are the ones I actually remember seeing growing up, so they're the ones nostalgic for me. I love 'em for it, and don't think they're bad movies.
namsivad whenever I got the complete karate kid collection I saw the next karate kid then I looked for it but couldn't find it because I didn't think of turning it around I then assumed it was advertising a sequel that never came out who knew.
It should actually be julie-kun and daniel-kun, not san. When refering to someone lower down the food chain, you use the suffix kun. San is for people above you, authority figures, elders, etc. If they are younger, subordiante, etc. or on equal footing, then you use kun. WHY DOES NO-ONE KNOW THIS?! IT'S JAPANESE 101!!!
yeah, but isn't the actor playing Miyagi Sensei (another innacuracy) Japanese? Isn't it his first language? Why didn't he say something? Or am I mistaken? (which is also possible)
"San" is kind of like the every-honorific. It's like "Mr." or "Ms" and isn't exclusive to rank, age, or gender. You can use this to talk to anyone, basically. "Sama" is an honorific you might use for someone of higher rank (maybe that's where you got mixed up?) Technically he could use the honorific "kun" for her, but generally it's reserved more for males in a friendly situation. "Kun" wouldn't *technically* be incorrect, as it can work in conversations between teacher/student, but it would be kinda weird.
my mistake. I've never studied Japanese formally, and what little I do know I've picked up from the general media and made my own conclusions from that. So what IS the honourific for someone lower down?
the guy in the second movie, wasn't miagi's brother but his' best friend, before the fight they had because of the woman they both loved. there's also a part when miagi explains how his family's karate is passed on from father to son and how his father made an exception for his friend, to teach him.
What you were told was not true. The movie likely takes place not long after the last movie and Daniel is probably still alive. But since this movie takes place in Boston and not California Daniel isn't there since Mr. Miyagi was only traveling there to accept a Medal. He does briefly mention Daniel at one point to Julie early on, and it was likely his reference to the line "Boys easier" at 10:18 But no, Daniel doesn't appear in the film. Ralph Machio was in his 30's when this movie was made.
I loved this movie as a kid... I know it's not that great, but back then there just weren't many films starring a female protagonist who actually /fought/ for her cause. The only other two I can think of are Mulan and Nausicaa: Of the Valley of the Wind. As a young girl who ended up in martial arts, this film was a big source of inspiration for me.
And the award for worst exposition to be uttered in a movie goes to...... THE NEXT KARATE KID!! (Applause) YOU SUCK!!!!!😀😀😀😄 My reaction= 😆😆😆😆(laughter)
i also wonder how much English Pat Morita knew. i bet by this point he was telling the directors "hey man, you do know my English is pretty good right? even if it wasn't, why would I constantly be speaking in the 3rd person? it just doesn't make sense. would my speaking english like a human hurt the movie? he asked. Adding "I'm not a Japanese robot. I mean, I still have the accent. Do I really have to start every sentence with Miagi say or Miagi think...?"
His English was flawless, he was born and raised in the US. He even worked as a stand-up comedian in the '70s. His Japanese, on the other hand, was pretty basic (he himself said so in interviews, but idk if he was simply being humble).
Wait a second...a legitimate question was made during this review...how the flying fuck did Julie knew that the bird was a girl? O_o...she doesn't seem to know anything other than to attract perverts who are into rape and beating and pouting and yelling and complaining so...how did she even figured out? O_O
Miyagi, why do you say that death is unfair? Death is the most fair thing in existence. No matter how young or old, rich or poor, nice or a$$, we all die at some point.
Wait, when Mr. Miyagi taught Daniel he was an old man, and now he's teaching his daughter who's around the same age... Oh my god, MR. MIYAGI IS IMMORTAL !
The Departed. Reservoir Dogs. Some Like It Hot. A Fistful Of Dollars. Cape Fear. Scarface. Insomnia. I'll stop here, but there are plenty of what are regarded as good remakes, some even better than the originals. even so the KK remake (which used Kung Fu not Karate) was still good, maybe as good as the original...which was a poor Rocky rip-off at best and the remake was certainly better than any of the really, really, really bad sequels.
FaceUnreality Not seen that one yet. My Gramps was a big John Wayne fan so I grew up with the original. But I'll take a look at the remake sometime. But even so, I fail to see why most people think a remake HAS to be better, why can it not just be a good film in it's own right? The narrow mindedness of the "anti-remake crowd" really does baffle me at times. There are plenty of original films that are bad, so it's not something synonymous with remakes. There are bad remakes sure, but there are good remakes to...even great remakes. Just like there are with original films too.
the fact that michael ironside is the security captain makes you think it was justifiable to voice cast him in the splinter cell series lol. i can't be the only one thinking this
Funny enough, I've seen cops act just that way, stopping when they're supposed to be running after someone like: Do I really have to? XD So this is pretty accurate.
Yes, 'Tis a good muppet indeed XD This is one of my favorite reviews to watch (a review which ironically I get nostalgic for), plus Karate Kid one and two were the jam during childhood, I still have memories of watching the original at my childhood best friend's house during a sleepover (good times).
THE KARATE KID- Film Series: Worst to Best -The Karate Kid (1984) -The Karate Kid, Part II (1986) -The Karate Kid, Part III (1989) -The Next Karate Kid (1994) -The Karate Kid (2010) P.S Bottom is worst and top is best.
Rabbit screams at Tigger . . . who sort of deserves it. I would get ticked, too, if someone bounced through my carrot patch and ruined everything. Lol.
I always like it when i suddenly find a secret Nostalgia critic review tucked away in the forgotten corners of the internet.
Me too there's always the same 50 on related videos and then there's hidden ones like this lol
Im running low starting to cold turkey aaah jaws 3 review thank you
+Matt D you're telling me : / I didn't even know he did a top 11 CEREAL MASCOTS UNTIL 12 LAST NIGHT T_P!!!
Matt D
"She was killed in a car accident with my father, and they're both dead."
I think the fact that they were killed implies that they're dead, Julie.
people die when they are killed
everybody got that?
I know right? To much repeating there.
Armando Torres I know that teen actresses were only half good, but god is her bland wooden performance awful.
***** Did not know that
Who noticed Critic put on a bow tie for the Worst Exposition Award? Nice touch.
yeah I did to
Geez every guy Julie came in contact with tries to beat her up or sexually harass her.
kind of like how Megan Fox is also constantly being sexually harassed.
Michael Siegler 😳
what about mr. miyagi
Ben Ramsey obviously not him
what about the monks?
You ever wonder if Shyamalan was watching this movie, saw the award-winning exposition scene, and thought to himself,
"That's how it's done! Explaining everything with no emotion or visual direction! I now know what I must do to make my director career a success!!!"
Nathan Deaton that makes too much sense.
students?
they look old enough to play the teachers
Seems common in hollywood movies.. people that are 30 or at least in late 20's are supposed to be like 16-17.
*****
At the very least Drake Bell can pull off being a teen and he's in his late 20's. He still looks pretty young.
Fact: Hilary Swank was 20 years old when this movie was made.
She does not look like a high school student to me, but at least she's hot 😍
ahhh...gotta love 35 year old high school kids
That Miyagi fight scene was so poorly choreographed.
I wonder if Pat Morita ever felt like the writers didn't respect him when they make him speak in that exaggerated broken English.
+Sean O'Reilly I beleive Pat Morita is the one who came up with it during his casting interview.
+IronGod1640 That's possible
Well I think he had to embrace some of the stereotypes in order to get the role in the first place, they initially didn't want to hire him because they didn't think a comedian could play the role.
IronGod1640 yup he did there is a video on TH-cam of him talking about it
So, I think the lesson we all learned from this is to not hire a crazy military guy to be the head of high school security. Good lesson. I think we'll all remember that for a long time.
Actually that's common sense, but good point
+Adam Hoffman Yeah, hire a sane one.
It actually reminds me of a game called Life Is Strange, where the head of security was a paranoid ex-military officer with ptsd, but who actually turned out to be helpful.
Or making a unneccesary sequel is terrible.
Without a doubt such a terrible movie.
The Step-dad from Life Is Strange was actually a good guy, though, despite being sorta crazy.
I just think Michael ironside was being himself and everyone was too intimated to stop him
All the dudes in this movie look over 30.
Wow, so many great movies came out in 1984. Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Terminator, Karate Kid, Nightmare on Elm Street, Woobly Bobble and the Amazing Poopamawutzit Chapter II: Electric Boogaloo...
"Aw...Don't make me run. I'm filled with pork chops and syrup." Get's me everytime

is there a translation? cause it sounds awesome!
I'm sure there is. Jan Gillou is a world famous author.

I would love to read this in English. Is there a subtitled version of the movie?
Prince Stormstrider That description, and the whole school security thing in this movie, both remind me of Kill La Kill( if you took out the extreme violence, wierd humor, and superpowers). You know with a school council that in all fairness would be taken down by the government just for how extreme and abusive it is.
Not every day you see Mr Miyagi kicking Sam Fisher's ass...
This remembers me of the dude making security at the railway station. He was such an overwhelming psychopath. We miss him so much.
lol "What does my fist + your face equal" XD
The moment she said "its just a car" to a 442 i knew i was going to hate her
MIYAGI WINS. FLAWLESS VICTORY. BLOWALITY.
??
watch the end. or the whole thing
Lol ☺
In the first movie, Mr. Miyagi tells Daniel that he never taught anyone karate before. And Miyagi is doing sand the floor on the car, not wax on. The director didnt have a clue about the karate kid.
I actually really like some of Mr. Miyagi's dialogue from this movie.
Totally saw the reference to "Mary Poppins" coming whenever Swank talks about "feeding her bird."
"Fighting not good. But if must fight... Win."
Umm... Didn't you say the complete opposite in the first Karate Kid movie? .._.
Julie: "Well that's a stupid rule."
Critic imitating Miyagi: "Aw naw you didnt."
Lol!
What was so bad about Karate Kid Part 3? It wasn't really that much of a copycat of the original. Ha, that high school bully reminds me of Ben Stiller in Dodgeball.
this franchise started out in perfect balance, harmony you might say... that all changed when the sequels attacked
"There is no killing here."
"That's a stupid rule"
... Anyone else think that can be taken the wrong way?
Why the heck are the "bullys" waiting in the school at night for someone to come? wtf...
Your self punch to the face slapstick was actually very good. Like professional vaudeville quality.

Since when did the main villain, the adult who created that school security have a crush on Julie?
Matthew Dover
No, no, no... it was the main student.
I swear.
wtf "guys do that all the time for me" are you kidding me you're a guy yourself... and a pretty disgusting one at that o.O
***** ... uh... wut?

A BIG LIPPED ALLIGATOR MOMENT!
Watching this in 2020 kills both your eyes and ears
oh god no matter what the bungee jump scene at the dance still makes me lose my shit. LOL
"What does one fist + your face equal?"
LOL!
This movie wasn't a masterpiece, but it was entertaining with Miyagi returning. It's a classic. Too bad they didn't have some role or at least a cameo for Daniel-san. This and Karate Kid III weren't that good sequels, but they had some good parts nonetheless.

yeah ,have a seen where Daniel-san is raiding Julie's hamper and get caught, " hey where is Miyagi I owe him $20 ".
When the cop stopped running after her all I thought about was the movie Superbad "he's a freak, he's the fastest kid alive" lol
"That board killed my family...family...family"
LOL...LOL...LOL...
Game Guy95 LOL? My son used to LOL, until I held his brains
+Smeeshie2001 Yeesh...

Leonidas05 AJ Redundant, much?
"some kid drops a candy bar wrapper, you make him pick it up...AND EAT IT!" had me laughing.
I wish they had the original karate kid as well as the girl in this.
Exactly.

The Next Karate Kid and The Karate Kid III are the ones I actually remember seeing growing up, so they're the ones nostalgic for me. I love 'em for it, and don't think they're bad movies.
First we had Cyber Monks, now we have Bowling Monks.
4;47 "Don't make me run, I'm filled with pork chops and syrup." ROFLMAO it kills me every time.
Lol. This movie is fucking hilarious.
I found it entertaining as well.. some cool scenes with Miyagi and Hilary Swank looks highly mateable in the movie.
'now if you'll excuse me, there's a fly I have to go crush with my chopsticks.' oh, priceless.
One of the worst sequels ever! The 3rd one I consider as a guilty pleasure.🎬😣😀
namsivad whenever I got the complete karate kid collection I saw the next karate kid then I looked for it but couldn't find it because I didn't think of turning it around I then assumed it was advertising a sequel that never came out who knew.
It's genuinely a good movie.
I think the macchio's character from the first 3 movies is the father of swank's father in this movie
Miyagi the Immortal.
how old is, Miagi then? XDD
Pots of Tor-Tor Karate magic

And the award for worst exposition to be uttered in a movie goes to......
THE NEXT KARATE KID!!
(Applause)
YOU SUCK!!!!!😀😀😀😄
My reaction= 😆😆😆😆(laughter)
I liked that psycho who was training the school security.
"Finish him off!"
lol he took it a little TOO seriously methinks
This movie hurts as a huge fan of the first two movies
Anyone else just figure out this review existed? There's always that one NC review you find randomly on the interwebs.
To its credit at least this was better than the remake with Jackie chan

3:20 so when the nostalgia critic becomes an announcer, his tie TRANSFORMS into a bowtie.... I want one of those!
Mike Ironside ...why did you do this film
Same reason he did Highlander 2?
"Gee, I wonder if this is the villain?" Doug.
"He is Sam Fisher, he is the Splinter Cell, get it right!" Me.
Don't think that fair to the 3. Reich, at least they had cool uniforms and did what they promise, not like them who were there to protect the Schoo.
At times, Nostalgia Critic really sounds like one of the MST3K commentators.
Miyagi awesome. Miyagi is God
I don't think so - feel free to read my new comment above
Miyagi, why do you say that death is unfair? Death is the most fair thing in existence. No matter how young or old, rich or poor, nice or a$$, we all die at some point.
even as a little kid I knew this movie sucked.
"Here's a math problem: what does my fist plus your face equal?" LOL!!
What a cockroach killer
Best line in the review, "Don't make me run, I'm filled with porkchops and syrup..."
I think the film looks pretty good.
"looks pretty good," but in reality it's a gigantic shit spewing hurricane of horribleness.
I think it's the weakest of the Karate kid movies, but it has it's moments
It's a pile of dogshit
Wait, when Mr. Miyagi taught Daniel he was an old man, and now he's teaching his daughter who's around the same age... Oh my god, MR. MIYAGI IS IMMORTAL !
still better than the new karate kid with jackie chan
+Xarai
sorry what
+Xarai No doubt!
I regret seeing that in theaters
It's sad that the critic thinks that the remake is better than the original
That not true.
If you can count how many times she was on screen with that hair style and a smile, that many.
I like Karate Kid 2 more than one to be honest its a really interesting expansion of the franchise universe
Eh it never really made sense like the first one but the 2nd one was a lot better than the 3rd one and this one as well as the remake.
The first one would have been hard to top, but the second one feels like a worthy sequel to me. The third one simply couldnt go beyond the formula
This movie was on Zoog Disney all the time when I was 6-7 years old. It outrages me that they opted to show this over a renowned classic.
I love the Karate Kid movies all them they are fun to watch but i did not like the fucking remake to me it fucking sucks like all remakes
The Thing and The Fly
King kong and batman
The Departed.
Reservoir Dogs.
Some Like It Hot.
A Fistful Of Dollars.
Cape Fear.
Scarface.
Insomnia.
I'll stop here, but there are plenty of what are regarded as good remakes, some even better than the originals.
even so the KK remake (which used Kung Fu not Karate) was still good, maybe as good as the original...which was a poor Rocky rip-off at best and the remake was certainly better than any of the really, really, really bad sequels.
Steve Perrin I would personally put True Grit on there as one of the remakes thats better then the original.
What's funny is that Michael Ironside has a more badass real last name than his character.
16:41
ALLAHU AKBAR
Go f yourself
7:40 what every non-car person says "It's just a car"
The Nostalgia Critic looked so cute in his tuxedo. :)
"That's impossible!"
"That... is why you fail."
I think the closest Sean Bean came to not dying was being turned into a dragon statue at the end of TES IV: Oblivion :D
10:07 😑 One does not simply walk away from that timeless "Wax on, wax off" scene.
So Hilary was 19 or 20 when this was filmed (born in '74)! I knew she looked and sounded older than a teenager!
the fact that michael ironside is the security captain makes you think it was justifiable to voice cast him in the splinter cell series lol. i can't be the only one thinking this
Cat freezes infront of charging car = roadkill
Tiger infront of charging car = epic road kill
Tiger position infront of charging = hilarious road kill
18:12 My favourite Nostalgia Critic facial expression.
Funny enough, I've seen cops act just that way, stopping when they're supposed to be running after someone like: Do I really have to? XD So this is pretty accurate.
Yes, 'Tis a good muppet indeed XD
This is one of my favorite reviews to watch (a review which ironically I get nostalgic for), plus Karate Kid one and two were the jam during childhood, I still have memories of watching the original at my childhood best friend's house during a sleepover (good times).
Lmao he bitch slapped him @ 19:29
Nostalgia Critic should just have a category on his show for actors who are going to go one to more important roles.
THE KARATE KID- Film Series: Worst to Best
-The Karate Kid (1984)
-The Karate Kid, Part II (1986)
-The Karate Kid, Part III (1989)
-The Next Karate Kid (1994)
-The Karate Kid (2010)
P.S Bottom is worst and top is best.
Interestingly the Critic likes the KK reboot more than the original.
Well, I hope my add on suits and pleases you better.
The Karate Kid (2010) wasn't that bad especially compared to The Next Karate Kid
You're welcome, Mr. Miyagi! Yeah, you have a point about saying fighting is bad, but still does it. I guess he thinks they deserve it!
Rabbit screams at Tigger . . . who sort of deserves it. I would get ticked, too, if someone bounced through my carrot patch and ruined everything. Lol.
18:10 ....shane from the shield?? is that you with hair? hahaha
