My uncle has the same engine down to the running number, he had it since he was young. He had it in his attic until I got into model railroading and we decided to test run the ac-11 and another engine. And after a good few years of not running they both still worked!

The cab-forward was built to keep the smoke away from the crew by being a almost reversed big boy locomotive apart from the wheel arrangement. They hauled mostly freight but they could do passenger service but it would be uncommon. All in all, cab-forwards are a pretty unique, powerful, and a great piece of American railroading history. Steam locomotives of all types will always remain awesome

Since it's a 4-8-8-2,I'd say closer to a reverse Yellowstone, since the multiple classes of Yellowstone Engines are 2-8-8-4s. The SP even had their own, classified as AC-9s.

The picture that you have of the real 4272 doesn’t have the “Southern Pacific Lines” on the tender likely because of all the dirt and grime that was on the tender from running in the tunnels over Donner Pass. Also Southern Pacific Lines is only on the Pre-war SP engines and rolling stock, if it just says “Southern Pacific” that is Post-war. The war being WW2

  • @kennethcohen1777
    @kennethcohen1777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

“Southern Pacific Lines” lettering on the tender was pre- October 1947… Just “Southern Pacific” lettering on the tender was post October 1947. It was very common for the lettering on the tender to be left off when it came time to repaint a cab forward… after a few runs, you would barely see the lettering on the tender anyway… I hope that clears a few things up :)

of all the things I know about railroading I never put more thought into cab forwards than "those look unique and interesting" and "somehow the fuel gets to the firebox"
even noticing the large tubes running from the tender it took you saying it to put the concept of liquid fuel into my head

    • @AtkataffTheAlpha

All cab-forward pictures also show them with a oil tender so it's not hard to figure out how they were fed.

This is because we usually think of steam engines is running on coal, maybe would. Oil fueled steam engines just weren't very common in the history of steam locomotion.

I got mine just this month for $107, the guy who sold it was really nice. Only CF I found at the model train expo so I was mega lucky.
Also, you can go inside the cab at the CF in Sacramento, CA.
These were steam powered but ran on oil and water due to the lack of coal on the west coast and at the time oil was considered cheaper, cleaner, and more available.
It could get a bit over 100 degrees in the cab and up to 1,800 degrees in the boiler.
One problem with the CF was the routing of the oil lines, they were right in front of the driving wheels, so if there was a leak the wheels would slip. One incident happened were a CF got stuck in a tunnel and ended up suffocating the crew.
The CF was the last locomotive purchased by Southern Pacific.
They used sand to clean out the boiler, you can see the box that holds the sand right in front of the engines furnace. The sand was actually not good for the boiler.
The CF was built by women from 1944 due to WWII.
Steam actually lasted a bit longer because of the war and the parts for diesels was needed for the war effort.
The CF was the second largest American steam engine, behind the Big Boy and ahead of the Challenger.

I feel betrayed that Trainboy purchased the Lionel Diesel set and promptly gave up on O gauge Thomas. You're still missing:
    -Thomas Passenger Set
-Thomas Christmas Passenger Set (good luck on that one, as far as I can tell, I purchased the very last sealed set in existence last year, have never seen another for sale)
    -Percy Freight Set
-James Freight Set. James. Set. James.
    -Thomas Christmas Freight Set
    -Expansion Set I
    -Expansion Set II
Also, since you seem to be rather limited on space, think vertically as well. An O gauge layout fits pretty perfectly on some simple 2x4 boards installed near the ceiling of your train room. Easy to install, easy to maintain, easy to decorate. The same is doubly true of OO or HO.

You should see about adding number boards and replace the motor for a can motor. It seems to be an ok runner as is however replacing the original pancake motor for a five pole can will make it run virtually silently and way smoother.
I have a rivarossi Berkshire that I managed to crammed a much too large three pole motor from an old rc boat and although it liked to run fast, it's way smoother than it ever was and is nearly silent when running.

Since TrainBoy named this video “the model beast”, I think if he gave the engine a face he would name it “Beast”

you should make your own custom engine, and i mean like, buy a bunch of parts, have it be unbuilt, to give you a challenge, then build it, if its a tank engine, tram, tender engine, diesel, or electric, you choose, its just a idea.
