    This is perhaps the best video explanation of the actual chords in the actual key of the actual song out there right now. Thanks for that Sean. Everything else I've found is either in the wrong key or just has totally off chords to try to be easier.... Even CifraTV which normally does pretty well with MPB and Bossa songs. (PS -- it would REALLY help to have a sheet with the chords you use written down btw....) -E

    I landed here after exhausting my go-to tab websites, all of which failed me. Bless you for untangling this beautiful mess. Normally, I struggle with learning from videos, but this is a fantastic tutorial that was easy to follow! (As easy as a song with a million chord variations can be, anyway.) Thank you!

      Sean Daniel Oh, you saw me! haha :)
      Tom Jobim is a great composer, indeed. He actually wrote masterpieces. Such complexity! But he's most valuated by others than by his own people. Give a try to "Wave". Aside "Águas de Março", is one of most recognizable song.
      Other guy that has plenty good pieces is Heitor Villa Lobos. He's classical, but still have roots on his songs.
      Have a nice, uh, evening? :)

    This is a great (for me) much needed lesson, my fretting hand is lagging behind my playing hand (agonisingly slow...), so I really needed a "million chord" song for practice. The basic rhythm I got very quickly from you "Bossa Nova Intro". Keep up the good work Sean!

    I'm a "thumb player" and as such some of these chords I root with my thumb on the E string. Notice the 7b5 rooted on the E, is essentially a Dm fingering using the D, G and B string instead of the G, B and E string. For m7b5 I use an Am fingering. Quicker for me to get to when using altered extensions rooted on the E. I do the same thing a lot with 7ths rooted on the E using the "D" fingering on the D, G and B string. Also use the D fingering with Dim7 rooted on E. I know most teachers steer you away from using the thumb, but I'm mostly self taught and truth be told I get there and on to the next a whole lot faster.

    hey sean really great work. and i could not agree more - this intro of yours is one of the wittiest and funniest vidoes out there. real fun. one thing i am wondering though. As the key is Bb shouldn't the chords rather read as Eb rather than D#? The same goes for G# that might better interpreted as Ab. Just some details in an overall great tutorial - but as the whole cadence appears to go around the christoph cadence - I - I7 - IV - IV7 (in this case Bb - Bb7 Eb -Eb7) this might be something worth to consider - my2cts. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • @brettbreet
    @brettbreet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great lesson! With enough practice, I should be able to nail this one down. I think you got that weird chord mostly right... a D#m6 (or Ebm6) in its first inversion. I'm not sure if it has a ninth -- which would be a F natural. Maybe if you continued the barre down to the first string to snag that F. Now *that's* quite a chord!

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, no kidding right! I have nightmares about that chord!

    • @tromboneJTS
      @tromboneJTS 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems to be missing the 9th. Also, if the key is Bb the correct notation would be Ebm6, as you say.

    thanks for the video sean. What model guitar are you playing ? can you recommend an accoustic to add to my collection ? I have several modest priced guitars and a few expensive ones. I would like a nice acoustic to compliment my 2012 les paul traditional and 2015 PRS CE. I played a taylor 114 today and it played real nice. But I am looking more for a oooh thats a nice guitar with out getting to $2000. It will stay in my recording area man cave for the most part. I take my mexican made fender HSS with a floyd rose and my takamine drednaught to jam sessions with friends. But I am trying to build a guitar trio of 3 really nice guitars. suggestions ?

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool man. Mine is a Taylor GA3 and I'm a total fanboy for it, you can still find some used online but they've switched their line to the Taylor 314 which is one I'd highly recommend checking out, I think it's just a great balance of size/tone/playability that really works for me. However it's funny you mention it because I just had a recording today with a girl who had a Taylor 322, and it was fantastic, that one might be in your price range too if you get a chance to check them out, has a little more wow factor. I'm just a big fan of Taylors in general because they play so great across the board.

  • @pensulpusher2729
    @pensulpusher2729 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey I'm a little confused on that D#m6(9)F# because it appears that the c is actually the major 6th of D sharp, so should that effect the labeling? Also I've seen that chord marked as Ebmmaj7/F# which was still more confusing because I don't see how there's a major 7 in that chord.

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok let's look at the notes: F#-C-D#-A#-C-(then if you bar all the way across the F on the high e string). So the presence of D#-F#-A# gives us the firm presence of a D#m. C is the major 6th of D# (you would think you'd take the 6th note from the minor scale to make a minor 6 chord but that's not how it works [watch my vid on minor 6 chords for more of that]) then that F (which I'm actually omitting would be the 9)

  • @cwilson8083

    oh.... i would like to add that i know its not the guitar that makes the player. I am sure you can make a $200 yamaha sound amazing. I am just looking to treat myself to something nice without spending a fortune. I dont need all the bindings and AAA top. But willing to spend money on the quality of sounds the tone woods provide and the playability of the guitar.

    Non si può ascoltare un suono cosi brutto. Prendi una chitarra classica per la bossa nova
