Do you know what the real problem with this is? Their hula teacher did nothing about Mertle's behavior; he's seen her bullying quite a few times throughout the series but never prevented it. Whenever Lilo lashed out, SHE was the only one who was punished!
I think is because Lilo was the one to cross the line using violence while Mertle only use (in class or near the school) indirects. Still wrong, but very smart for this little mean girl.
Her parents divorced when she was young. Her mother works as a hair stylist, while her father owns a store and sells cheap tourist trinkets. Saved you ten minutes.
Did you forget how in lilo and stitch 2 during the dance scene she does a dance as an ad for her dads car shop, but in the third movie yuki mentions that her dad left, so it happened between the 2nd and 3rd movie not when she was younger
@@jondoe8350 1. There is absolutely nothing whatsoever indicating that her parents are together in L&S2. 2. Six IS young. She's six years old during the first movie and somewhere around seven during the official sequel. The series takes place over the course of three years, so Myrtle is around 10 at the end of that. Which makes her technically a preteen. Six is young compared to a preteen.
Myrtle's aunt seems like a businesswoman and seems to help her sister raise Myrtle but she rarely ever has the time for her niece since she's a workaholic.
"The unexplained death of her parents." Um, technically, Lilo does kind of explain it when she said "That was us before... It was rainy, and they went for a drive." That tells us that her parents most likely died in a car accident.
I agree with much of your points about Mertle, especially the ones about her family issues. I also want to add that while Lilo has a supportive, loving big family, Mertle does not. In fact, other than her mother, the only family member they show is Mertle's aunt Stacy. And just from her 2 appearances in the series, her aunt clearly didn't care enough to remember Mertle's name or be fully engaged at her niece's special events. Even though her dog Gigi encouraged her to be a part of Lilo and Stitch's ohana, I think deep down, Mertle liked the idea of being part of a big family, even a family that doesn't fit a normal mold.
The fact that we learn about Mertle's father from one of her friends, and see it illicits a negative reaction from her, is very interesting. How did her friends find out about her dad's absence? Mertle clearly isn't comfortable with them just saying it out loud in casual conversations, so we don't know if she was even the one to tell them; they could have been informed by their parents who were told by Mertle's mother, in an effort to gain a support system now that she's a single mother. That would have been cool to see Nani run into Mrs Edmonds at the store and talk about the girls, only for Nani to learn that her little sister's bully still waits late at night in hopes that her dad will come back
Still doesn't excuse her rotten behavior... Lilo is proof that you can still act like a rational and decent human being despite the trauma you face. Mertle could take SEVERAL pages out of her book...
I agree! Innoway I think she is jealous of Lilo even though Lilo has been through a lot her whole life like losing her parents in that car accident and still having love ones to care for her like her big sister Nani’s, Nani‘s boyfriend David, Pleakley, Jumba and Stitch she’s still jealous of her. Even though Mertle has “friends” oh my don’t know why they still hang out with her considering she treats them more like minions and tools been friends she’s still jealous.
Another thing, Mertle's dad could have chosen to stay in her life (even if he and her mother were divorced). Lilo's parents obviously didn’t choose to leave; they died in a tragic and unexpected accident.
That’s for sure if anything she could use a few good spankings and grounding lectures on how to treat others along with visitation with a child psychologist (hey Arnold episode Helga on the couch 🛋)
In my opinion I think Mertle was jealous of Lilo. She had a broken family, but she was optimistic and felt cared for. Mertle probably didn't feel very "cared for". Her mom might've spoiled her with all the toys she wanted, but she still felt empty. She believed she was the "leader" of her little possy, but mertal wasn't exactly a "friend". She didn't know how to be one. Which is another reason she felt empty. She was depressed and hid it along with blaming others to feel important. And hated Lilo because she had everything mertal couldn't.
Ok, but consider this one. Myrtle's family is divorced, I'll go along with that one, especially considerin the line about "Like Myrtles dad" But what if Myrtle isn't bullying Lilo out of a sense of entitlement or even a sense of lashing out? What if she's just bullying her to make sure she isn't the one to be bullied? What you see when you look at Myrtle and who she hangs out with.. is a bunch of kids very obviously native to their country, while Myrtle with her fire red hair and pale white skin very obviously isn't native to the country, or at the very least her parent/parents weren't. So she's different. Why does this matter? Because children will usually pick on those that are different to them if they're going to pick on anyone. Myrtle is already in the danger zone here as witnessed in the video above. The others do tend to look to each other before her, move closer to each other than her, they do just leave when they've had enough of her. So she has proof that if she doesn't act and act convincingly, she's going to be in the same shoes as Lilo. Myrtle is further different because her family is a one parent household... this is a huge disadvantage. Enter Lilo. A girl who's.. a little different to start with, not via looks, but via personality. She doesn't have much money, she has no parents, and her tendencies to go into dramatisations "I can't feed my fish tuna! That's cannibalism!!!" and wild fantasy stories (look at the homemade doll for a good example)... What's the best way to divert someone from your own differences? Hyperfixate on someone elses'. Push them to the point that they prove even further how they don't fit in, and then push yourself in as a way to prove that you are just like them in your opinions. Maybe she's lashing out? Maybe she's just ensuring her own place in the heirarchy, and keeping herself out of dangers way in the only way she can think of.
@@lilcat8857 there is also Nani's boss's son, who Myrtle has shown interest in but he passes her over for Lilo. I can see Myrtle being picked on because of her red hair, the way her hair is styled, her parents' situation and her wearing glasses. Kids wearing big glasses like Myrtle's were bullying victims in a lot of shows in the '90s and 2000s. So, seeing her being the bully was kinda a twist on the trope.
I remember when Lilo and Stitch first came out in the theaters, I *hated* Myrtle. It wasn't just because of the stuff mentioned in the video, but I got bullied badly by girls who acted (and strangely looked) just like her growing up. Even as an adult, I still think she's an awful person. What a horrible little girl! I've taken psychology and early childhood courses and I'm interested in true crime. From what I've learned, usually children who were raised by abusive parents sometimes behave like them. They also aren't fully developed to process and regulate their emotions like an adult, so if Myrtle's dad was an abuser and cut off from the family, it would explain her behaviors and emotions. She also has that whole "perfect" ideology and attacks anyone who doesn't see fit. Her dad could have done this same thing to her, causing her to put herself up on a pedestal to prove him wrong but also harming others in the process. One other thing I noticed was Myrtle became a lot nastier to Lilo after she beat her up (I thought she deserved it and cheer during that part now lol). Perhaps when Myrtle didn't meet her dad's needs, maybe she got beaten up too? I had people do awful things to me in the past and if I meet a new person who behaves similarly, I keep a safe distance and become very wary around them. The mom, if I recall correctly, was very nice, but she probably isn't saying anything because it's hard to talk about, wants to move on, and knows how to regulate herself because she's an adult. Lilo could be triggering Myrtle's fight mode, which would make sense given how things like PTSD work, but just because she may be an abuse victim doesn't give her the right to abuse others back. If these speculations are true, Myrtle is still a kid and with the proper therapy, she can heal a lot easier as opposed to an adult. It would've been very interesting if Disney expanded upon this and wrote Myrtle a bit more in depth. Great video and wonderful essay!
Myrtle also doesn't have a good relationship with her Aunt Stacy. From what I saw in the show, Myrtle's only parental figures were her aunt and mom. Her mom seemed like the only genuine nice person whereas Stacy just seemed like she couldn't stand her niece since she was always trying to get her niece's events over and done with, so she can go back to her yoga class, go back to Los Angeles.
Even though myrtle does have a tragic backstory and I do feel a tad bit sorry for her it still doesn’t excuse her for being a bully to Lilo just because her dad was absent because I’m pretty sure Lilo and Nani’s parents died in a accident I think
yeah it was raining and they went for a drive that's what she tells stitch that's why she feeds pudge the fish because she thinks he controls the weather and she doesn't want anyone else to lose their parents in a rainy flood.
I think it's weird how in the second movie (I think), Mertle has a whole hula dance that was basically a commercial for her dad's car lot and then in Leroy and Stitch, her friend Yuki seems to not know that she had a dad at all. Kinda makes sense as we've never seen the father but it also doesn't make sense since it's been brought up at least once before that she has a father. (Named Carl, I think.)
I may been hurt left abandon by my family in the past as a young teen but I’d never mistreat anyone. I just never had the guts to do so. I treat others how I want to be treated. but still never had the respect back. I guess I can say I’m just like lilo. I’m glad I am and not mean. I understand both sides tho. 😮💨🥺
Maybe she grew up to be a nice lady and treat Lilo with respect, the same way that Nellie respected Laura when they grew up on Little House on the Prairie.
Mertle's parents divorced/separated? feel kinda sorry for her when it comes to that, outside of that, it's no freakin' excuse to treat Lilo the way she does, none
That's no excuse for Myrtle of bullying Lilo and others especially have jealousy towards her cause lilo's family is bigger which also includes compete before she cheated on everything And that does not excuse her of acting cruel and obnoxious over her father's estrangement after the divorce. She's was acting like her dad cause he was away from her Gee and I have no idea for her true nasty bullying nature because of her parents estranged. Get over it Myrtle!
Mertle was a character that made my blood boil. She judges Lilo for being different and part of me just wants to reach into this fictional world and tell Lilo and that we all need to be weird. The world would be pretty boring if we were all the same.
Mertle is over compensating for a lot of things. She is the boss, queen bee, and leader but she has a lot of things against her that typically wouldn't put her there so her personality is overkill to make sure she isn't on the low social ladder. She puts Lilo down to avoid it at all costs. Mertle is a red head Mertle wears glasses. Mertle is not as advanced as the other girls (she rides a plastci tricycle while they all ride regular bikes already with training wheels). Mertle is the shortest girl in her group. (in the movie) Mertle is non-native. Mertle has freckles. Because of these things she needs to put Lilo down to build herself up. Because without doing so she is socially the bottom tier stereotypically.
I also think is because she is jealous in how lilo can easily find joy in life despite after losing her parents. While mertle has never recovered from the fact that her dad left her and her mom. Which is why it makes her feel jealous that lilo is more happy than her and has a bigger family and friends while myrtle only has 3 friends and her mom, so she always tries to bully lilo to make her unhappy so she can feel better about herself.
I don’t love Mertle, but I can’t and won’t bring myself to hate her. She’s a little girl who wants a perfect family!!! I can’t blame her for being mean to Lilo. But she shouldn’t be so incredibly rude to Lilo either. She should have been sympathetic at least. When Lilo goes away, she should have been like saying to herself “Should I be mean to Lilo or no?”
You mentioned that Lilo’s parents’ death was unexplained, that is not accurate. Lilo explains it upon Stitch looking at the photo of her family in the scene before he leaves. She explains that they were driving while it was raining and got in an accident. Exact quote from Lilo “it was rainy and they went for a drive.” Admittedly they never explained why they were out for a drive, but it could have been some simple errand.
Yeah…I don’t feel sorry for her after she bullied Lilo. Tragic back story or not we don’t feel sorry for her nor do we care. We hate her as we hate the teacher who lets her get away with it
Do you mean to tell me that the real reason why Mertle had been bullying Lilo the whole frickin' time was all because her parents are legally separated?! BULL FRICKIN' CRAP! Even if Mertle had huge amounts of respect for her father, that doesn't mean she was in the right to act like a spoiled bratty bully to everyone around her. She especially had no right to bully Lilo--a little girl whose parents had died and had to be taken care of by her only big sister Nani--and make her feel like crap on a daily basis. And if she really did all of this just to carry on her father's ways by devoting herself to his opinions and viewpoints about normal average people, then that just means that Mertle's dad was a terrible father and a bad influence on her who needed to be kicked out of her life for her own good.
Incorrect, that’s not what he’s saying. He’s saying Mertle mistreated Lilo because she didn’t have a role model to teach her how to properly act, nor anyone to depend on when her family separated, unlike Lilo who had Nani to make her feel like she actually still had a family. Mertle bullied Lilo because she was alone and was jealous that even though Lilo had a similar situation to herself, she still was able to find happiness and depend on someone, on top of not having anyone teach her how to properly act. Other than her mother, we only see her aunt twice, and she doesn’t care to even remember Mertle’s name.
@@talithacumiferguson8834 all I meant to imply is that the situation is more complicated than just “her parents are legally separated and her dad ran off”
I'd like to inject an added wrinkle to Mertle's difficult family life. Hint: The flag Mertle sometimes wears in her hair. I speculate that her father is in the military and Mertle is an military brat. Raising a child while on active duty is not an easy task. The family follows dad from base to base and Mertle has to make new friends before really getting to know anyone at the old base. New friends. New schools. What's the point to being nice if dad could be assigned to a new base next month? And, if dad's in the navy, he's at sea more often than he's at home. And yes, jealousy plays into it because Lilo, though without parents, has a more stable life than Mertle has.
I do have sympathy for the situation in Myrtle’s family… however it is inexcusable all the same for her to be lashing out and belittling others just because her family is not the so called stereo typical “perfect family” if anything she needs further old school disciplining as well as a child psychologist!!
Mertle isn’t a bully just to be a bully. She’s a bully because her family problems. All she wants is a normal family… I do have 2 very present parents. So I do have to be sorry and I genuinely and truly am sorry for Mertle.
Mertle is the worst character in this series and the movies of the Lilo & Stitch canon. I wish she could’ve gotten some bad karma for all of her actions and words towards Lilo and have the same things done to her to see how she would feel if she was in the same position.
I actually can kind of relate to her. When I was younger, I was one of those kids prone to tantrums due to my ADHD. when my parents got divorced, That only added fuel to the fire that was my temper. 3 years ago, a judge prevented my father from seeing me and my sister for personal reasons I won’t say online. And while I have mellowed out now, I still remember when my parents would fight and how much I told them to stop and all the swears that I learned ( I repeated one on the playground ). I didn’t pick on anyone, but it was still a lot for me, which is why I relate.
If mertle apologized in the end i would feel differently. But she is still on my list of one of the most messed up disney characters because ironically it’s not normal for somebody this young to be filled with so much hate.
The dad might have been a one nightstand and or dead beat her mom is rarely shown might sleep around so doesn't care/note's that her kid is a bully or care what happens to her and only show's up to save face. The mom buy's anything her kid wants so she doesn't have to deal with her the aunt looks like she might be ill and that's why she can't remember her name.
I think Mertle decided to be a bully because: 1. She missed her father. 2. She mocked Lilo because her family is brocken. 3. She wants to be a bully. 4. She's just a child and she doesn't know that her actions are actually hurting others 😢
Mertle is also spoiled no matter how many times she bully Lilo she even turning Lilos new friend against her Mertle is not the nicest character in the show
I remember a theory that lilo’s parents died in a car crash and had the thought that what if mrytle’s dad caused that crash and went to jail because of it and THATS why she targets lilo. There are holes in it though mainly Mertle’s behavior after the dog show, and what’s her name saying mertle’s dad ‘ran away’ although the second could imply rather then go to jail he became a fugitive, but then mertle praising lilo’s mother puts the biggest hole into that theory of all
I discovered her truth in stitch has a glitch. A mother who isnt raising her at all, letting her run the show. Acting entitled... One day when she grows up she will become a karen...
@@americanbrownreviews And I didn't see Spoiled Milk gets blamed by Filthy Rich! Discord must turned Spoiled Rich into stone! and Nurse Sweetheart will became Diamond Tiara's new mother!
you should have also brought up in the series episode “skip” when Lilo travelled to the future as she became a teenager when she saw teenager Mertle as she STILL bullies Lilo which could mean she always hated her forever even when older well thats only “time travel” on that episode which timeline could probably be altered history or it was probably not canon
To be fair, there were times when Lilo instigated problems Like the time she peeped in on Mertle talking to her mom about three girls in a negative way and automatically assuming that she was talking about her three friends (Mertle was actually talking about three of her dolls) And caused Mertle’s friends to turn on her Mertle definitely had every right to be mad at Lilo for that Lilo has also crashed a tea party of hers with Stitch And yeah, Lilo often being the one to get physical didn’t help things Mertle may not be perfect, but Lilo could be a pretty naughty girl sometimes
Ok, but Lilo isn’t really a naughty girl. Mertle is actually a naught girl, but still, Mertle blames Lilo for everything rather than taking responsibility for what Mertle has done.
Myrtle clearly has repressed issues. If you ask me, I think her bullying is also projection. Her mind likely thinking "How can she be so happy with no parents while I'm suffering without my dad?" It's no excuse, but I do appreciate this aspect of the character.
in order to form an accurate opinion about her, it would be good to know what she was like with Lilo before the death of her parents. We don't know when she started bully Lilo
This wasn't mentioned at all, but upon watching the scenes, I did notice that Lilo is the only Polynesian person in the group. Myrtle has VERY distinctive pale skin and bushy red hair. Her friend group consists of a similarly pale blonde and two slightly darker-skinned brunettes. Lilo has a darker skin tone than all of them and lovely black hair. Her eye shape is even different (Lilo's, Nani's, David's, and the hula teacher's eyes are all more almond-shaped, while the non-Polynesian characters tend to have rounder eyes). I don't know how intentional these designs were, but I think Myrtle miiiiight have picked up a little racism from her dad.
The very beginning of this video: “Lilo being raised by her sister after the unexplained deaths of their parents.” We literally learn in this movie from Lilo talking to Stitch that her mom and dad went for a drive and it was raining. From that we can conclude that they died in a car accident due to the weather.
or the excuse they were given i think cobra bubbles is assigned to keep lilo safe from the real cause of death i think her parents are in witness protection
Mertle: In fact, I bet that's why your dog ran away. And I also bet that he's _never_ coming back. Hula Girls: Yeeeaaahh! Yuki: Just like Mertle's dad.
Well your explanation was very good😍 and true about mertle, but for me She Will Always be cruel and less friendly😑 but you're right i feel pity for her, 🥲 by the way the video was really Fantastic 🥰
Tinfoil Hat Conspiracy Time; Lilo's Parents were killed in that car accident, but Myrle's dad was driving the other car, he's the one that lost control, crashing into them, and now she is taking out the fact that her dad's in jail for Manslaughter on the daughter of the couple he killed.
Mertle has no excuse for her bullying behavior. Forget that brat. Everytime she's on screen. I give her the bird everytime. The hula teacher should've done something to stop and prevent Mertle from bullying Lilo. The "they're just a child card" is no longer an excuse. She's a brat and should burn. All bullies are always wrong and should be punished everytime single time they bully anyone. If I were a hula teacher at that school, I'd do something to get the teachers to finally stop Mertle's bullying.
What if it goes deeper? What if Myrtles father is somehow directly responsible for Lilos parents death and it was an accident that caused strife in Myrtles family because her father being a bigot refused to take responsibility cause of it was an accident and would rant at home that it was Lilos parents fault for the compensation he had to pay to Lilo and Nani. Nani is an adult so Myrtle has to somewhat respect her, but Lilo is an easier target for Myrtle to blame the strife and break up of her parents. Just a theory
Mertle should be grounded for bullying Lilo on purpose because it’s very rude and naughty she also doesn’t deserve to get presents at Christmas you naughty girl Mertle
Sure a broken home and family can make feel downfall. But you know is no excuse. Talk and get help, no one else is responsible for your actions but your self.
Whenever I watched Lilo And Stitch with my kids, whenever Mertle was on screen, I was triggered. In one episode Lilo is transported ten years into the future. She runs into Mertle, who almost immediately starts to bully her. Then there was Mertle's little posse: "Yeah!'
I get that they probably wanted to give Myrtle a reason for being so mean for seemingly no reason, but sometimes people (including kids) are just superior feeling snots who take joy in making other people feel bad about themselves, and depicting an example of this, Myrtle Edmunds, in a light of "Oh, she's not really a bad kid, it's just that her parents got divorced," does a disservice to kids. It gives bullying victims an impression that they should accept their bullies' behavior because they're probably going through something, and it gives bullies the sense that they can use any hardship as an excuse for what they do, especially if their victim pushes back. "Oh, I can't believe you would say that to me. Don't you know my parents got divorced?"
Lilo actually only has one human friend: Victoria. They’re both not friends with Mertle either, but Mertle tries to befriend Victoria, but good thing Victoria prefers to be friends with Lilo. From now on, Mertle goes with Elena, Teresa and Yuki and Lilo goes with Stitch and Victoria.
I don't know if this is confirmed or not but I remember hearing that the reason why Lilo brings Pudge the fish a peanut butter jelly sandwich every Tuesday or something like that was because that was a tradition she started doing when she was younger than she is in the movie which is pretty young and the one day she didn't go and bring the fish a sandwich her parents went out on a drive and they died during the storm and then when Stitch comes around there's even a deleted scene where Stitch actually kills pudge and Lilo freaks out and so that's also very tragic if you think about it because Lilo and some way blames herself for her parents passing
I've always asked myself and I've searched through the entire internet why the hula teacher encourages the bully to be the way she is. Always blaming the victim and disciplining the victim and never ever addressing Mertle Edmond's bad abusive behavior. How he can blame Lilo for defending herself and never make Mertle accountable for her actions? and how he could allow that horrendous behavior ? and by doing so he's neglecting all children in the hula class including the bully. It didn't hurt so much to talk with her mum and it didn't hurt so much to stop Myrtle by just addressing the situation without putting himself at a child's maturity level. Myrtle said horrible things to Lilo during the series and in one episode she even called Lilo "Weirdlo" in a rehearsal in front of the teacher and he just applauded when she finished her presentation. In the first movie the bully girl called Lilo crazy and he only addresses one part of the mayhem that happened. For me his character is irritating and dumb and it's a very bad example of how to help victims and how to help the bully to stop before it's too late. It's irresponsible that he didn't call her mom so Myrtle's mom had the opportunity to talk with her daughter. She thinks everything is ok. I am also disappointed on how Nani never showed up for her sister by addressing Myrtle's behavior and discussing it with the teacher and there's not even a phrase that indicates that in some way the adult characters are interested in addressing the situation in the minimal sense even they know what's going on and they aren't happy about it. At least saying that she would like Myrtle' Mom to talk to her daughter about her being mean and rude constantly toward Lilo. There's not a single sign of respect towards victims and the bully just feels more empowered and encouraged to keep her behavior and that's also neglecting a child because she's not receiving guidance or any help either and she's a little girl. The other girls are also neglected in the way no one pays attention to how they dangerously follow Myrtle's lead and they're just kids who don't comprehend the extent and significance of behaviors and actions because their brains aren't fully developed. They're more close to the toddlers stage than the teens stage. Thank God they showed Lilo will beat them if they ever decided to grab her and beat her among all of them. I mean if this was a real case there is the possibility of a group of kids grabbing, beating and hurting a kid in a solitary place no one can see them. But a girl like Lilo will beat them up with courage not because she's mean or violent but because she needs to defend herself in situations of danger. Sadly the danger of emotional and psychology isn't addressed here. Never. And yes, is just animation but still a representation of human problems and challenges so I would like very much make the adults characters jumping into action to stop and correct that behavior and protect Lilo from harm and the other girls from being bad people or even get hurt by immature people who don't care they're kids and you should teach them by talking to them not destroying them emotionally or hurting them physically not even a bit.
what's really sad and interesting is despite how horrible Mertle and the girls treat Lilo, Lilo still considers them all to be her friends. She tacky just wants to be accepted like any kid would, but Lilo doesn't hate her bullies.
So Mertle is kind of like Chloe from Miraculous Ladybug: both have separated parents, both admire their estranged parent and live after their teachings even when their estranged parents are toxic people and both live with another parent, who feels sorry for their child, spoils them and doesn't discipline them.
I definitely believe that if her parents didnt get a divorce or! If after the divorce the father was still a big impact on her but he wasn't and there are chemicals In our brain that can change a part of who we are because maybe that experience was traumatizing or very upsetting or infuriating and thoses can be very heavy emotions and your mind with go into what I can record mode and that's why sometime people will not know how to process there emotions in a healthy way it leads to bullying or other things because if you dont have alot of support and love from BOTH parents then you will most likely not be as happy but I believe that is why she is like this
She Was Abused Because She Was Being A Bully And Bulling Herself And She Knew How Mean It Was Hence WHY Mertle Felt Sorry And When Yuki Said Something About Her Father She Pretending To Be Mean And There Were Times Metrle Felt Bad And Wanted To Apologize To Lilo And After The Series Ended She KNEW Lilo Was A Good Person So She QUIT Being A Bully And Accepted Lilo As Her Friend And She Was No Longer Friends With The Other Girls
Sorry but daddy issues will never let me forgive someone that bullied around a lonely orphan girl. Divorce isn't the same as losing both parents to some spontaneous event. Mertle still has both of her parents unless her dad is also a big jerk. It wouldn't be the first time I've heard of a guy or a woman technically abandon their biological kids when they start over a relationship with someone else. That's speculation. However, idolizing the absentee parent is a real thing for some people and I'll never understand that headspace from a psychological standpoint. I think Mertle picked on Lilo because it was easy and nobody called her out on it. After all, Lilo was already what most adults would consider a problem child being raised by her sister. Only she wasn't a problem. She was just misunderstood. Mertle's mom might definitely be in that overcompensating mode feeling bad about the divorce. A lot of parents do this kind of thing without realizing that it's only a band aid solution spoiling the child with material things or expensive gestures. It doesn't make the child forget the situation they're in and overtime they just learn they can exploit their parent's guilty conscience.
Do you know what the real problem with this is? Their hula teacher did nothing about Mertle's behavior; he's seen her bullying quite a few times throughout the series but never prevented it. Whenever Lilo lashed out, SHE was the only one who was punished!
If i were their hula teacher I'd make sure Mertle would get a time out and yell at her for that behavior
I think is because Lilo was the one to cross the line using violence while Mertle only use (in class or near the school) indirects. Still wrong, but very smart for this little mean girl.

Gigi also wanted to be there, cuz she was an experiment too
Fun fact: In the last episode of the TV series, both Myrtle and Lilo team up to catch an experiment!
MERTLE DESERVES TO BE ALONE.
@@shortangel333 I AGREE BIG TIME!
She's 6 years old.
@@SteamHyenaz So was Lilo
Not an excuse but Lilo did still have a sister
She will never be anything in life
Another thing, Mertle's dad could have chosen to stay in her life (even if he and her mother were divorced). Lilo's parents obviously didn’t choose to leave; they died in a tragic and unexpected accident.
Even with tragic backstory, that certainly doesn't excuse Mertle for bullying Lilo.
I agree , I still hate Mertle no matter what. She is such a jerk Mertle.
True. It’s not an excuse . It’s a reason. I feel sorry for her.
@Hattan AlShutaifi
Aren’t bullies suppose to be unlikable?
That’s for sure if anything she could use a few good spankings and grounding lectures on how to treat others along with visitation with a child psychologist (hey Arnold episode Helga on the couch 🛋)
agreed and it upsets me that their stupid teacher doesn't do ANYTHING
In my opinion I think Mertle was jealous of Lilo. She had a broken family, but she was optimistic and felt cared for. Mertle probably didn't feel very "cared for". Her mom might've spoiled her with all the toys she wanted, but she still felt empty. She believed she was the "leader" of her little possy, but mertal wasn't exactly a "friend". She didn't know how to be one. Which is another reason she felt empty. She was depressed and hid it along with blaming others to feel important. And hated Lilo because she had everything mertal couldn't.
Ok, but consider this one.
Myrtle's family is divorced, I'll go along with that one, especially considerin the line about "Like Myrtles dad"
But what if Myrtle isn't bullying Lilo out of a sense of entitlement or even a sense of lashing out?
I agree.... though Hawaii isn't a country. It's a state. It should be its own country, but it currently isn't.
But there's another blonde girl that doesn't look native and is not particularly cynical.
@@mado-wh4jv personally I always believed the blonde girl was half Hawaiian, with one parent being from the main land while the other was Hawaiian
She's a bitter loser
Me too
this makes Angelica Pickles from the Rugrats a more likable person!
Same
Thank you. It‘s not a excuse to bully another people for your own probleme.
I blame her parents, and the teacher. if Mertle was my kid, she'd know what discipline is by a black person

That's no excuse for Myrtle of bullying Lilo and others especially have jealousy towards her cause lilo's family is bigger which also includes compete before she cheated on everything
And that does not excuse her of acting cruel and obnoxious over her father's estrangement after the divorce.

Mertle is a red head
Mertle wears glasses.
Mertle is not as advanced as the other girls (she rides a plastci tricycle while they all ride regular bikes already with training wheels).
Mertle is the shortest girl in her group. (in the movie)
Mertle is non-native.
Mertle has freckles.
Because of these things she needs to put Lilo down to build herself up. Because without doing so she is socially the bottom tier stereotypically.
Even a bully has a reason. This would make sense. This actually explains a lot of her actions in the entire series.
I think that Mertle is bullying Lilo because of her homelife and something had to do with her Parents is diverse isolation I think 🤔 🤔 💭 🧐
Agreed
Yeah no Lilo is an orphan so Myrtle gets no sympathy
I also think is because she is jealous in how lilo can easily find joy in life despite after losing her parents. While mertle has never recovered from the fact that her dad left her and her mom. Which is why it makes her feel jealous that lilo is more happy than her and has a bigger family and friends while myrtle only has 3 friends and her mom, so she always tries to bully lilo to make her unhappy so she can feel better about herself.
I THINK SO AS WELL.
@@squidmom3162 That still didn't give her the right to bully Lilo on a daily basis!
@@talithacumiferguson8834 I didn’t say it did. I was simply correcting your mistake.
@@talithacumiferguson8834 all I meant to imply is that the situation is more complicated than just “her parents are legally separated and her dad ran off”
@@squidmom3162 Oh. So, you're saying that Mertle's parents might actually be divorced?
You might be onto something with that speculation
I do have sympathy for the situation in Myrtle’s family…
however it is inexcusable all the same for her to be lashing out and belittling others just because her family is not the so called stereo typical “perfect family” if anything she needs further old school disciplining as well as a child psychologist!!
Mertle isn’t a bully just to be a bully. She’s a bully because her family problems. All she wants is a normal family… I do have 2 very present parents. So I do have to be sorry and I genuinely and truly am sorry for Mertle.
I love the scenes of Mertle Edmonds from the Lilo and Stitch series. I totally love it.
Myrtle lashed out cause that was in the script she's secretly an actress lol
Mertle is the worst character in this series and the movies of the Lilo & Stitch canon. I wish she could’ve gotten some bad karma for all of her actions and words towards Lilo and have the same things done to her to see how she would feel if she was in the same position.
Agreed
It is like Dumbo getting teased for the size of his ears!
Myrtle is like 5-7 right? She definitely can grow up to be a better person
Whatever she's got going on, it doesn't pardon her bullying behavior. Nothing should ever excuse bullying!
“You’re weird”
That basically means “You actually have a personality and I’m jealous”
To be fair, I'd blame Myrtle forgetting Ruben over and over to be bad writing, rather than a canon bad memory.
Lilo and Nanis parents death didn't go unexplained. They died in a car accident
Yes it's so sad 😢😢😢😢😢😢
I think Mertle decided to be a bully because:

Like the time she peeped in on Mertle talking to her mom about three girls in a negative way and automatically assuming that she was talking about her three friends (Mertle was actually talking about three of her dolls)

Mertle definitely had every right to be mad at Lilo for that
Lilo has also crashed a tea party of hers with Stitch
And yeah, Lilo often being the one to get physical didn’t help things

Myrtle clearly has repressed issues. If you ask me, I think her bullying is also projection. Her mind likely thinking "How can she be so happy with no parents while I'm suffering without my dad?"
It's no excuse, but I do appreciate this aspect of the character.
in order to form an accurate opinion about her, it would be good to know what she was like with Lilo before the death of her parents.

Mertle was a bully just to be a bully
Tinfoil Hat Conspiracy Time; Lilo's Parents were killed in that car accident, but Myrle's dad was driving the other car, he's the one that lost control, crashing into them, and now she is taking out the fact that her dad's in jail for Manslaughter on the daughter of the couple he killed.
Just to be a bully

Honey for me the question is, “who cares?“
Sure a broken home and family can make feel downfall. But you know is no excuse. Talk and get help, no one else is responsible for your actions but your self.
This must be the reason why Mertle had to bully Lilo just because of what happened to her dad.
Why does anyone hate weirdos and "freaks"? Because we're different, and people fear what's different.
Emotional 😭
Myrtle bullies Lila because she's jealous
Lilo is sweet, intelligent, pretty ,creative and cheerful
@charmianernest1449 we don't know if Lilo is good at school, but Mertle has a bad memory and she is not so smart about studying
She tacky just wants to be accepted like any kid would, but Lilo doesn't hate her bullies.
hopefully mertle willl outgrow it
Off topic, Nani way too fine till this day
So Mertle is kind of like Chloe from Miraculous Ladybug: both have separated parents, both admire their estranged parent and live after their teachings even when their estranged parents are toxic people and both live with another parent, who feels sorry for their child, spoils them and doesn't discipline them.
Exactly
Chloe's behaviour with Sabrina's look
Good job 👏
Lilo must not be bullied. The bully will go the wrong way.
Eh. She never tried to redeem herself once and she still went out of her way to make Lilo miserable. She was the worst.
I definitely believe that if her parents didnt get a divorce or! If after the divorce the father was still a big impact on her but he wasn't and there are chemicals In our brain that can change a part of who we are because maybe that experience was traumatizing or very upsetting or infuriating and thoses can be very heavy emotions and your mind with go into what I can record mode and that's why sometime people will not know how to process there emotions in a healthy way it leads to bullying or other things because if you dont have alot of support and love from BOTH parents then you will most likely not be as happy but I believe that is why she is like this
Me too
the movie/series take place in the early 2000s
In general in the early and the middle of 2000s, agreed.
