Ahh, thank you so much for the dental protector idea. I think I will try one of those bottom teeth protectors they make for sports that you heat and mold to your teeth.

I use scoth masking tape folded over on the glue side, cut a square to cover my teeth. It is thin, flexible, waterproof and very chip.

I noticed it’s weak muscles. So you compensate by biting. I play alto well. But when I went to tenor i started clamping. So the trick is to cover the teeth with a good teeth guard. Use parafin wax paper or something like Omni guard.😊. As I practiced more I realized my teeth are serated .and there is no away around it but to use some sort of polymer teeth guard. People may say hey saxophone shouldn’t need a guard but hey you can’t play without out teeth…. So if your teeth are sharp there is nothing but covering them that will help.

Hey there, of course no guard should be used to compensate for bad embouchure (biting). I personally always use cigaret paper to cover my teeth, but it's only a layer of protection to allow me to play for many hours a day without experiencing any pain in my lip. I highly recommend though for everyone to work on their embouchure, and if you don't know what to do, check out my video on the topic

I had the opposite experience when I started playing bari from tenor. I had to tighten up significantly (not biting) to sharpen my pitch enough, as I was about 20 cents flat without doing so. When I finally go back to tenor, and alto I find I no longer have the problems with biting, and my intonation is much better.

I learned to roll my lip out (jazz) and tighten the sides of my mouth. To avoid needing one... My lip has gotten a lot bigger and a lot stronger. I think if it's about if you are playing classical sax these methods are probably a good idea...

I think it mostly depends on the amount of time you play every day and the saxophone you play on (soprano requires more pressure than alto). Of course, if you play around 3 hours maximum, with enough training, you'll be fine, but if you play more, this will not only allow you to do so, but to do it without hurting your lip afterwards and keep it fresh even if you're into your 6th or 7th hour of playing that day. Especially when the following day you plan on doing the same. But like you mentioned, a correct Embouchure is very important and will already help you out quite a bit.

Many thanks for this wonderful video. I am interested in buying a dental protector as you mentioned in this video [6:06 - 6:18]. It says : ".....you heard that right a dental protector like boxes have but a little smaller of course. Here's the one I used for approximately 1 year....". Could you tell me where to get it.? Had better give me brand name and link, please. Thank you.

Thanks a lot for your comment, as far as I know there's no specific brand of this. You can get one from your dentist, because they have to be molded to your teeth anyway :)

I agree, j c. I wonder how you place the paper - fold again and place over the teeth or wet and place against the front?
