I love that this song is basically Sarajevo, just with the lyrics changed slightly (except at the end), it shows that while there has been a change to the times, it really isn't as different as it may seem, with a new war only on the horizon,
@@Noctaru I listened to the whole album in order, skipping ones I already knew, like Soldier of heaven, christmas truce ect. (It's midnight for me, so I needed to be faster (so much for that, I'm still here)) and I didn't notice it at first until the chorus part kicked in
its in a different key, its in a much brighter key, which means that it is still the same world as before the war, but with a new hope, a hope for forever peace.
The final minute of this song is really haunting to me, instead of a final celebratory note, it just slowly fades away, showing that things are unfinished, asking endless questions that will all be answered in 20 years time. Incredible.

The perfect companion song to Sarajevo. Well done Sabaton. Joakim being the lone voice desperately crying out "It's the War that will end all wars" with the chorus chiming in "Can a War really end all war?" even louder, is haunting and I love it.
Agreed. Kinda makes Joakim sound like the bad guy in this narrative, which is a shame, but his voice is just perfect. Like, he tries to convince everyone that war is over and they can relax, so that he can take them by surprise later, but nobody believes him.

You know what I love? The ending bit, it sounds like marching! It's as if they all know that war is coming back, so, they already begin marching towards it!
Well, normally I would see it as lazy to reuse basically the entire first song as a band's last song in the album, but I think here it actually works perfectly as both a reminder and a way to show that this new peace really just brings around another war. Excellent songs guys. I can't wait for the history videos when you guys get around to them.
Well, half of it, it starts off with the major/happy notes of a resolution of the war...then goes back into the dark "is this REALLY over" (reprise of Sarajevo).
I live the contrast of uplifting optimism at the beginning of the song. It’s essentially a modified Sarajevo. However, the later portion of the song shifts and slightly opens the door to a creeping sense of doubt about the lasting effects of the Treaty of Versailles. Even the image of the bloody olive branch seems to evoke the idea of a tainted peace. A peace that will eventually lead to greater conflict.
As to be fair, i would like Sabaton to do specificly a song about September Campaign, i know we have 40:1, but it's only about one battle. The agression that started the greatest conflict in human history should have it's own song just like Sarajevo.

Peace is only ever a prelude to the next war. War will ALWAYS return, always sooner than anyone expects, always in a new way and often in a place no-one expects. We need to shake ourselves out of this post-WW2, post-Cold-War complacency and realize the world has never, ever been kind to nations who rested upon their laurels.
As per tradition sabaton has this 1 song in each album that will bring a tear into your eyes and gut punch you in the feelings. This is just as beautiful as the end of the war to end all wars in the last album.

Actually, I don't think this was a bad way to approach this. When I saw Versailles on the track list I wondered how this was going to be done. Making it a tie in from Saravejo suits it perfectly at least for me.
I like how this song and Sarajevo work together so well. War is raged but peace is introduced later, but soon enough war returns and peace is a distant dream again, you can see that in that the start of the song is all happy cause peace has begun, but towards the end war returns, and the chorus from Sarajevo comes back. I'm poor at explaining but I love these songs.
Don’t worry I kind understand you say as both song fit will on story of ww1 the Great War how war raged in Europe for 5 year and peace come and all the soldiers like a dream come true as people think the war is over but only reality treaty will last few decades until next war will happen next 20 year as some don’t accept the treaty and will cause next world war.
I didn't actually listen to the album in the "proper" order, I listened to it in a random order on youtube. I just finished Sarajevo, then started this one. Yeah, they do work extremely well together.
In a concept album solely based on World War 1 Versailles being a reprise of Sarajevo is a beautiful masterpiece and the perfect curtain call to the album.
I'm a bit disappointed that no song talks about france or russia or romania I mean these 3 countries had such a high number of casualties (both france and russia had more casualties during ww1 than the entire serbian population)
@@ahouais5620 I mean, they covered a wide variety of countries and topics in this album. They covered Belgium, Serbia (twice), a crazy Belgian-Irish guy, Germany, Bulgaria, Italy/Austria-Hungary, and the US/France (Harlem Hellfighters). Ever song felt important and/or lesser known in history.
@@ahouais5620 Due to segregation within the US Army, the Hellfighters fought alongside the French and in French units. They even traded out their weapons and equipment for French weapons and equipment.
I feel like this song shows the reception to the treaty of Versailles, at first everyone feels its solved everything, showed by the upbeat tone at the beginning, but near the end, they realize it only brought upon it's new set of issues, showed by the ending which mimicked Sarajevo's beat

That gave me chills. It's been a while since listening to a new album gave me that amount of chills, goosbumbs, tears and reason to headbang at the same time. It definitely became a masterpiece. a few cool thing that I notice from listening to this song 1. it went from happy song to dark and full of worries, just like how the treaty goes 2. all Sabaton song have an ending but this song does not, it's keeps on going only to fade out, it's represent the endless question about the result of war and the fact war never disappear only waiting for a chance to rise once again
At first I was thinking that this song was too optimistic, that the treaty was the ushering in of a golden age that we know didn't happen. So when the tone & lyrics changed in the second half, I knew Sabaton had hit just the right note.
Because of the English and the Americans. If the Allies had listen to France, Germany would have been definitely crushed without any possibilities to rise again, but England and America (especially England) did not want France to become too powerful in Europe. Conserving a rival with Germany was the better option for them to avoid a too powerful France.

After researching the treaty of Versailles, I am really amazed that it took 21 years for the war to begin again. I thought that the two wars were really close from one another but now I see that that it took that long has to be a minor miracle

I love how both this song and Sarajevo correlate with each other, like a beginning and a conclusion to the album, I love this detail, and I love how it was performed! Sabaton, doing wonders, as always!
The frail optimism in the first part is completely shattered as the second part, a callback to Sarajevo, begins. Knowing what comes next, I can't help but feel hopelessness, a dreadful sensation growing from behind my back. No war can end all war.
I love that the end of the song sound so ominous while being cheerful at first, makes sense considering the versaille treaty was so brutal and unjust. The winners celebrated while the loosers were left not just defeated but completely crushed without a hope in sight. Perfect soil for festering hate, and a Man that might abuse it for his own twisted and sickness vision of the world.
Unjust? If anything, Versailles was far too kind to Germans! If they’d been put in their place a bit more firmly, they could never have started the Second World War!
As General Foch said, "It's not a peace, it's a 20-year armistice" and he was totally right. He found that the treaty was not firm enough with the Germans and that he would return to war 20 years after the treaty.

Yeah they were way too soft on them but it was the only way it was going to end. No matter how beat the germans were, they would have just kept digging trenches and bogging down the allies for years. Which is why the allies had to throughly destroy them in ww2. This one is my absolute all time favorite. The contrast, the theatrics, the foreshadowing, the usage of the previous song, the sense of doom and repetition. It is the best one I think.

The bleeding olive branch is a really strong image, heralding the violence that the revanchist peace would bring. I almost feel like the dove turns somewhat raptorlike or maybe corvidlike, but it's probably just a tired mind playing tricks on me.

I like how the song starts triumphant then becomes a hollow echo as if we’re moving away from a room with the celebration and seeing the bigger picture outside and the wars to come. A mental image of politicians who haven’t seen the horrors of war making toasts and cheers contrasting with the grim soldiers replenishing their gear. The very end reminds me of Rise of Evil as fresh forces are on the march
I like to imagine that Sarajevo is representing the start of WW1, the album itself representing the events that took place therein, and Versailes is the end. The callback to sarajevo representing the start of WW2
I have to say. Listening to every song in order. This is one hell of a way to start and end an album. Same thing that started would end in something beautiful but chaotic. They did this so well in this album and their song The End of War to end all Wars
I like how Sarajevo's theme is dark and heavy, while Versailles is joyful and uplifting....... For a moment, until the latter part which foreshadows what's crawling out of darkness
I can honestly just see that last chorus, the entire shift in attitude to the song, being used in some sort of play where the one idealist is stuck saying "it's the war that will end all war," while the rest of the cast and crew ask if it really is the end of all war
I listened to the full album for the first time just now. It's really cool to see Sarajevo and this song being like a complementary introduction and conclusion to the album!
I love the style that Sabaton did with this song and Sarajevo (I also love how they added Sarajevo's chorus into this song). My fav song off the album, was not expecting the explosive ending. Fantastic outro to a fantastic album!
During the Versailles Conference, Italy was given less land than it felt it had earned and Japan was ignored altogether. Twenty years later, France surrendered to Germany in the same rail car in which Germany had surrendered to the Allied Powers.

The reparations they wanted were the reason for the collapse of the German economy, without that Hitler would have never happened.
@@jesuszockt3531 You have to remember though that the Germans were both proud and militaristic so did not think they lost. No matter what peace was signed, as long as the Germans had to admit defeat they would not accept a peace as legitimate or "fair". As a result a "Hitler" figure would've emerged and second world war would've been started. BTW the reparations asked of France after the Franco-Prussian war was 26 billion USD (adjusted for inflation) to be repaid after 5 years. The Germans were asked to repay 260 billion USD (adjusted for inflation) whenever they could, im fairly sure they were repaid only recently, almost 100 years later. Which means the reparations asked was NOT outrageous especially since they destroyed Belgium and the French countryside. That is why I think the peace of Versailles was not harsh enough. It allowed the Germans to rebuild their army and start another world war. There should've been a peace similar to the peace at the end of ww2.

@@etherealhawk the conditions were less harsh than during the franco prussian war. You can't ask a nation which was humiliated by the other be kind with at the end of a war. Moreover even with condition less difficult the WW2 could appear too. I explain. That's not the versaille's treaty but the defeat of Germany without any fight on his ground and the terrible economics conditions. Maybe the versaille's treaty had boost that process but that's not the principal cause of WW2. I add if all french condition were applied the WW2 couldn't existed. Because France wanted destroy germany as a territorial entity. it was a very young nation at this period less than 50 years.

Out of all the songs in the album this one gives me the biggest goosebumps because we can still relate to it with the current situation in Europe, and not only it, but everywhere where people are suffering because of war.

The change between the triumphant instrumental proclamation where each line has a satisfying "conclusion" in the first half to the monotonal military march that just leads into the next line instead of ending is such a fantastic bit of musical story telling, you guys are fantastic at what you choose to do.
Just finished listening to the whole album and while the entire thing is a masterpiece, this last song had me sitting in my room afterwards just staring at a wall in silence for like 15 minutes trying not to cry. I can't even really put my emotions into words but it hit me hard. Truly amazing work.
Something I appreciate about the first half of the song is the hope that came with the treaty. At a time like ours, it's important to have that hope, even though this led to an even larger war. The hope of peace is something I hope to hear more of from you guys
I kinda envision at the solo that a surviving soldier is in his forties with a family and sons, turning on his radio as he watches them outside the window. Suddenly, he'd hear the Franklin D Roosevelt on the radio, his eyes widening in horror upon hearing the declaration of war on the Axis, the thought of his son's fighting in a new World War bringing back the terrifying memories of his time on the battlefield...
I love the composition of this song because it quickly turns from a hopeful tune of happiness celebrating the end of the greatest armed conflict known to date, to a doubtful "Will this war really end all wars?" accompanied by a static esque distortion of the audio. It's so haunting and creepy listening to this after a hundred years, because you can almost taste how that happiness the people felt wasn't gonna last even 20 years with the coming of an ever worse war that would leave its mark on humanity forever.
I loved the emotions the guitarists were able to convey in this album. Namely these 2 songs. Sarajevo sounds so grim and menacing because it's depicting the start of a continent spiraling into a chaos that swallows the world in gunpowder, chlorine, and brass. War is here, and it is not here for you. Versailles sounds righteous and mighty because this godforsaken war, one that just took 20 million men and countless beasts of burden, is, at long last, over. Peace is here, and it is here explicitly for those who deserved it.
This song really is something, because despite the hopeful tone at the beginning, once turns back to Sarajevo at the end, proves that the shot is more impactful than the treaty. Still beckoning, tainting the treaty, covering it in blood, preparing for the more horrifying war coming. The shot of Sarajevo still resonate to this day... We can still hear it.
a perfect ending to a 2 parter set of albums, i hope we get something like these last 2 albums for ww2, it would be really nice to have an album like these last 2 that almost read like a book
Absolutely epic way to start the album (Sarajevo) and to finish the story. Similar in a melody/ composition, yet the tone in this song is so much lighter and more hopeful (at least in the beginning)

I love that this song is basically Sarajevo, just with the lyrics changed slightly (except at the end), it shows that while there has been a change to the times, it really isn't as different as it may seem, with a new war only on the horizon,

its in a different key, its in a much brighter key, which means that it is still the same world as before the war, but with a new hope, a hope for forever peace.
The final minute of this song is really haunting to me, instead of a final celebratory note, it just slowly fades away, showing that things are unfinished, asking endless questions that will all be answered in 20 years time. Incredible.
It gets better: The Synth-heavy whine droning just under the main rhythm? It's the EXACT SAME one as from the next song chronologically in their list.

Well, normally I would see it as lazy to reuse basically the entire first song as a band's last song in the album, but I think here it actually works perfectly as both a reminder and a way to show that this new peace really just brings around another war. Well, half of it, it starts off with the major/happy notes of a resolution of the war...then goes back into the dark "is this REALLY over" (reprise of Sarajevo).

I live the contrast of uplifting optimism at the beginning of the song. It’s essentially a modified Sarajevo. However, the later portion of the song shifts and slightly opens the door to a creeping sense of doubt about the lasting effects of the Treaty of Versailles. Even the image of the bloody olive branch seems to evoke the idea of a tainted peace. A peace that will eventually lead to greater conflict.
if I was Sabaton, I'd also begin working on another proper WW2 album, with this being the very foreshadowing of it. Incredible stuff!

As to be fair, i would like Sabaton to do specificly a song about September Campaign, i know we have 40:1, but it's only about one battle. The agression that started the greatest conflict in human history should have it's own song just like Sarajevo.

We need to shake ourselves out of this post-WW2, post-Cold-War complacency and realize the world has never, ever been kind to nations who rested upon their laurels.
As per tradition sabaton has this 1 song in each album that will bring a tear into your eyes and gut punch you in the feelings. This is just as beautiful as the end of the war to end all wars in the last album.

Actually, I don't think this was a bad way to approach this. When I saw Versailles on the track list I wondered how this was going to be done. Making it a tie in from Saravejo suits it perfectly at least for me.

War is raged but peace is introduced later, but soon enough war returns and peace is a distant dream again, you can see that in that the start of the song is all happy cause peace has begun, but towards the end war returns, and the chorus from Sarajevo comes back.

I didn't actually listen to the album in the "proper" order, I listened to it in a random order on youtube. I just finished Sarajevo, then started this one. Yeah, they do work extremely well together.

a few cool thing that I notice from listening to this song
1. it went from happy song to dark and full of worries, just like how the treaty goes
2. all Sabaton song have an ending but this song does not, it's keeps on going only to fade out, it's represent the endless question about the result of war and the fact war never disappear only waiting for a chance to rise once again
2. not all have an ending, actually (Night Witches and Karolinens Bön don't have it as well)

At first I was thinking that this song was too optimistic, that the treaty was the ushering in of a golden age that we know didn't happen.
So when the tone & lyrics changed in the second half, I knew Sabaton had hit just the right note.

If the Allies had listen to France, Germany would have been definitely crushed without any possibilities to rise again, but England and America (especially England) did not want France to become too powerful in Europe. Conserving a rival with Germany was the better option for them to avoid a too powerful France.

Actually the Versailles treaty was too lenient. Germany imposed Frankfurt treaty on France in 1871 and France paid all. Saying that Versailles caused WWII is a nazi revisionist statement.

The frail optimism in the first part is completely shattered as the second part, a callback to Sarajevo, begins. Knowing what comes next, I can't help but feel hopelessness, a dreadful sensation growing from behind my back. No war can end all war.
I love that the end of the song sound so ominous while being cheerful at first, makes sense considering the versaille treaty was so brutal and unjust. The winners celebrated while the loosers were left not just defeated but completely crushed without a hope in sight. Perfect soil for festering hate, and a Man that might abuse it for his own twisted and sickness vision of the world.
Unjust? If anything, Versailles was far too kind to Germans! If they’d been put in their place a bit more firmly, they could never have started the Second World War!
As General Foch said, "It's not a peace, it's a 20-year armistice" and he was totally right. He found that the treaty was not firm enough with the Germans and that he would return to war 20 years after the treaty.

I love the symbolisation of the bloody pigeon, knowing that the Versailles effect was what turned the weinmar Republic to a horror beyond humanity

I like how the song starts triumphant then becomes a hollow echo as if we’re moving away from a room with the celebration and seeing the bigger picture outside and the wars to come. A mental image of politicians who haven’t seen the horrors of war making toasts and cheers contrasting with the grim soldiers replenishing their gear.
The very end reminds me of Rise of Evil as fresh forces are on the march

Versailles and Sarajevo is like a story separated with Sarajevo giving a more upsetting setting with Versailles filled with excitement by the treaty
I like how Sarajevo's theme is dark and heavy, while Versailles is joyful and uplifting....... For a moment, until the latter part which foreshadows what's crawling out of darkness
This might be my favorite album so far
I can honestly just see that last chorus, the entire shift in attitude to the song, being used in some sort of play where the one idealist is stuck saying "it's the war that will end all war," while the rest of the cast and crew ask if it really is the end of all war
I listened to the full album for the first time just now. It's really cool to see Sarajevo and this song being like a complementary introduction and conclusion to the album!

I love the style that Sabaton did with this song and Sarajevo (I also love how they added Sarajevo's chorus into this song). My fav song off the album, was not expecting the explosive ending. Fantastic outro to a fantastic album!

Versailles wasn't harsh enough is the most bullshit statement I ever heard about WW1, giving Germany the sole responsibility for the outbreak of war was absolute nonsense, war was to come one way or another all countries were equally responsible for it.
The reparations they wanted were the reason for the collapse of the German economy, without that Hitler would have never happened.
@@jesuszockt3531 You have to remember though that the Germans were both proud and militaristic so did not think they lost. No matter what peace was signed, as long as the Germans had to admit defeat they would not accept a peace as legitimate or "fair". As a result a "Hitler" figure would've emerged and second world war would've been started.
BTW the reparations asked of France after the Franco-Prussian war was 26 billion USD (adjusted for inflation) to be repaid after 5 years. The Germans were asked to repay 260 billion USD (adjusted for inflation) whenever they could, im fairly sure they were repaid only recently, almost 100 years later. Which means the reparations asked was NOT outrageous especially since they destroyed Belgium and the French countryside.
That is why I think the peace of Versailles was not harsh enough. It allowed the Germans to rebuild their army and start another world war. There should've been a peace similar to the peace at the end of ww2.
In hindsight the treaty of Versailles was another catastrophe
It's a shame because France caused the conditions in Germany that led to WW2 because of the harshness of the treaty, which the British wanted to to be more lenient on, because it led to hyperinflation and the collapse of the interwar government
@@etherealhawk the conditions were less harsh than during the franco prussian war. You can't ask a nation which was humiliated by the other be kind with at the end of a war. Moreover even with condition less difficult the WW2 could appear too. I explain. That's not the versaille's treaty but the defeat of Germany without any fight on his ground and the terrible economics conditions. Maybe the versaille's treaty had boost that process but that's not the principal cause of WW2. I add if all french condition were applied the WW2 couldn't existed. Because France wanted destroy germany as a territorial entity. it was a very young nation at this period less than 50 years.

Nope, the Versailles treaty was too lenient. Germany imposed Frankfurt treaty on France in 1871 and France paid all. Saying that Versailles caused WWII is a nazi revisionist statement.

Out of all the songs in the album this one gives me the biggest goosebumps because we can still relate to it with the current situation in Europe, and not only it, but everywhere where people are suffering because of war.
A song that stabs, cuts and twists into my soul. I love it, brings tears to my eyes. Just simply beautiful in a time of uncertainty. Love you Sabaton never loose your way !

The change between the triumphant instrumental proclamation where each line has a satisfying "conclusion" in the first half to the monotonal military march that just leads into the next line instead of ending is such a fantastic bit of musical story telling, you guys are fantastic at what you choose to do.

Just finished listening to the whole album and while the entire thing is a masterpiece, this last song had me sitting in my room afterwards just staring at a wall in silence for like 15 minutes trying not to cry. I can't even really put my emotions into words but it hit me hard. Truly amazing work.
This is the only song I’ve ever teared up while performing. It’s beautiful and invokes so much emotion.
As General Foch said, "It's not a peace, it's a 20-year armistice" and he was totally right.
This song is so beautiful, I love the subtlety of it being played in a more minor key, with more shrilling voices, foreshadowing what is to come.

This song gives me chills, that whole speech in the middle makes me shiver.
Something I appreciate about the first half of the song is the hope that came with the treaty. At a time like ours, it's important to have that hope, even though this led to an even larger war. The hope of peace is something I hope to hear more of from you guys

Sarajevo at the beginning and Versailles at the end of the album... what a great idea!
I kinda envision at the solo that a surviving soldier is in his forties with a family and sons, turning on his radio as he watches them outside the window. Suddenly, he'd hear the Franklin D Roosevelt on the radio, his eyes widening in horror upon hearing the declaration of war on the Axis, the thought of his son's fighting in a new World War bringing back the terrifying memories of his time on the battlefield...
The war to end all war is my first album from sabatoon and this song is one way to end one awesome album
I love the composition of this song because it quickly turns from a hopeful tune of happiness celebrating the end of the greatest armed conflict known to date, to a doubtful "Will this war really end all wars?" accompanied by a static esque distortion of the audio.
It's so haunting and creepy listening to this after a hundred years, because you can almost taste how that happiness the people felt wasn't gonna last even 20 years with the coming of an ever worse war that would leave its mark on humanity forever.
I loved the emotions the guitarists were able to convey in this album. Namely these 2 songs.
Sarajevo sounds so grim and menacing because it's depicting the start of a continent spiraling into a chaos that swallows the world in gunpowder, chlorine, and brass. War is here, and it is not here for you.
Versailles sounds righteous and mighty because this godforsaken war, one that just took 20 million men and countless beasts of burden, is, at long last, over. Peace is here, and it is here explicitly for those who deserved it.
But then it reverts to Sarajevo cus of course ww2

the celebrating tune from the beginning, to the transition to sarajevo altogether, brings that attack on titan final credits vibe

This song really is something, because despite the hopeful tone at the beginning, once turns back to Sarajevo at the end, proves that the shot is more impactful than the treaty. Still beckoning, tainting the treaty, covering it in blood, preparing for the more horrifying war coming.
The shot of Sarajevo still resonate to this day... We can still hear it.

I love that this mirrors first song from the album creating poetry, by it rhyming in a way. This is why Sabaton is the best.
a perfect ending to a 2 parter set of albums, i hope we get something like these last 2 albums for ww2, it would be really nice to have an album like these last 2 that almost read like a book
Absolutely epic way to start the album (Sarajevo) and to finish the story. Similar in a melody/ composition, yet the tone in this song is so much lighter and more hopeful (at least in the beginning)
