Back in the 60s, I put many of bluegill meals on our family dinner table. I was just a kid and caught em through the ice in Michigan and my parents and siblings loved them. Perch,Blue gill, and Walleye are my favorite
My first fish was a Bullhead catfish! My Grandpa, brother and I caught, cleaned and ate em right there on the bank of the muddy pond we were at! Loved fishing ever since! I was 7! It was 39 years ago Tuesday April 20th! RIP Gramp's!
Santee lakes in Santee California has a large BG mounted at the tackle shop, it is mounted on a standard boat seat cushion for size comparison and weighed about 3 1/2 lbs when caught. It nearly covers the cushion.
a guy was fly fishing at this lake near me that i fish at and he literally caught every fish in the lake and the fish didn’t bite for a whole nother week
One time about 10yrs ago I caught a 4.7lb rainbow trout out of Pipe lake up here in western, WA. It was still attached to some little kids Barbie fishing rod. Poor fish was dragging that thing around for awhile, the rod & reel was covered in algae or some kind of green slimy stuff. I set that guy free,he must've been in that lake forever to get that big considering a big trout in that lake is about 12in a huge one is 14in. Everyone thought I was nuts for letting that one go.
I used to get big ones in the lake feeder streams, in very late Autumn. While fishing nymph flys for late season trout. They like the same bugs trout do, apparently. For average size, you can fillet them without even gutting. That leaves a tasty little nugget of their delicious meat.
Trout are cool but they're not the only group of fish with insects on their menus. I've caught bluegills, green, redear, hybrid sunfishes, crappie, & bigmouth bass on nymphs & poppers.
I’m 34 now , but my whole childhood me and my grandfather would go to lakes or ponds all the time and catch tons of bluegill . One of my favorites to eat
I caught a huge bluegill back in 1977 right off interstate 55 in Illinois in one of them deep ponds where they take dirt for an over pass it was 1 1\2 pounds I was 13 first cast with a brand new zebco 33 . it was the talk of the town walking back into town I stopped by the tavern and had a bunch of lookers .
I was fishing at a power plant with a live shad for Rockfish/Stripers and catfish with 90 LB. braid. I caught a huge Drum we all guessed around 50 pounds.I just thought a damn old Drum a trash fish. Later I found out the worlds record was 53 pounds. I caught a possible worlds record if not a state record. This was before I owned a cell phone so I didn't even get a picture. I could probably catch a state record there tomorrow but they shut it down to fishing. I saw several big drum caught there close to 40 lbs
Icould break this record this summer. I know of a small pond here in georgia that has some bluegill, shellcracker and regular bream (green with yellow belly) that are the circumference of a 5 gallon bucket. My grandmother used to take me to the pond and we'd catch at least 8 or 9 that were that size. Of course, we ate them, because we were fishing for the dinner table and not thinking of any records, and it was also a private pond. There are STILL some of those monsters lurking in there to this day. The last time I was there I hooked into a bluegill (purplish black and very dark with copper colored forehead .. also with hump on the head) at least 4 pounds, it escaped. The small pond is located.... whoops, can't tell ya that. i guess if i catch one i'll just have to have a georgia dnr official with me on that day to confirm. thanks for reading.
That bluegill looks like someone filled him up with split shot. Just kidding 🤣. Now I am remembering the happy little pop of a surface strike, like snapping your fingers. Bass and trout are more of a bloop.
My granddaddy started me fishing bout the time I started walking. Since then I ve fished NC from mountain streams to the gulf stream and nothing beats a pound or better copperhead bream on a light fly rod.
i loveee catchin smallmouth, trout, largemouth, catfish, yellow perch, walleye, all the river fish, but i love catchin bluegill most of all, especially on a crickt or poppin bug :)
I caught one when i was younger on my catfish rod. It fought like a cat, but when i saw it i couldn't belive it. It was the size of a dinner plate. My dumb ass let it go :(
I had a tape measure with me so I laid the fish along the tape measure and took a picture of it. The fish was 27 1/2 inches long. If you look on a measurement to wait chart that fish should’ve weighed maybe 14 bonds and pre-Span. The state record is 13 lb. 14 oz.
I could have caught the Missouri state Bass record if a few things were a little different. I caught a huge bass out of my farm pond. Of course I was alone. It was in July, very hot, water was Crystal clear and it was noon. All the worst conditions were catching a big fish. My plastic worm would not stay in my hook so I bit the head off of it and stuck it back on. I was fishing on my damn and all of a sudden I got a huge pool. It didn’t fight much it was just a load coming in. I had tied a leader on to my brain I was afraid it was going to snap but it didn’t for some reason. I weighed the fish and it was about 2 ounces under 12 pounds. More...
And ive caught a bluegill on a privet lake it was so big i couldn't get my hand around it to hold it to pull hook out i had to pin it down to get it out i cant even remember how big it was im guessing 12-13 inches biggest one ive ever seen in person
I actually have a record mounted bluegill that was in michigan out of doors its was my grandpas mom that caught it theres a video and pictures of it someplace she was given a free boat for catching it
I fish for bluegill to use as catfish bait and its always a fun time. Caught a very large one about a month ago and was debating on using him or letting him go. After spending 15 min in my bait bucket I decided he was to impressive so I was gonna let him go but I wanted a pic first. As I had him in one hand while getting my phone ready in the other he slipped and jumped out my kayak. Typical fish story I know 😆
The 1st time I took my oldest girl fishing she was 3. I had just caught and released a bluegill of just over a pound. She asked me if that was a good fish and said yes. For me. It was. Moments later she gives her fishing pole a big yank and horses in a 3 pound largemouth. Good thing she wasn't using a Barbie pole!
I once caught a Bluegill the size of a large dinner plate. I caught it on a rubber worm and lipped it just like a bass. It's mouth was the size of my middle finger and thumb forming a circle. I've caught some big bass in double digits but the only catch I ever considered mounting was that Bluegill. (I let it go) A ten plus bass is far easier to come by than a four maybe even five pound Gillrilla. But hanging dead things on the wall as decor is tacky anyways.
I just caught a bluegill that is 4lbs. Go to my Facebook Page I just caught it yesterday on a shallow diving minnow lure in a backwater pond that rarely gets fished by anyone.
Catching bluegill never gets old.
so true
Probably the best fresh water eatin fish if you ask me...crappie is a contender though
Never
Catching bluegill is fun at first but when you go to the pound and that’s all you catch it’s boring
ohhhh yes it does.
Back in the 60s, I put many of bluegill meals on our family dinner table. I was just a kid and caught em through the ice in Michigan and my parents and siblings loved them. Perch,Blue gill, and Walleye are my favorite
Now that was the coolest fishing story I have ever heard down to his 11 year old grandson reenacting the moment👍👍
My first fish was a Bullhead catfish! My Grandpa, brother and I caught, cleaned and ate em right there on the bank of the muddy pond we were at! Loved fishing ever since! I was 7! It was 39 years ago Tuesday April 20th! RIP Gramp's!
That's awesome! I have fond memories of catching native brook trout with my best friends, when we were 9. Those memories are priceless!
Santee lakes in Santee California has a large BG mounted at the tackle shop, it is mounted on a standard boat seat cushion for size comparison and weighed about 3 1/2 lbs when caught. It nearly covers the cushion.
I fly fish. I am not ashamed to say I will put a day of good blue gill fishing up there with any day of trout fishing. My favorite fish by far.
Especially on a popper
You can catch bluegill every other cast fly fishing
a guy was fly fishing at this lake near me that i fish at and he literally caught every fish in the lake and the fish didn’t bite for a whole nother week
Great story! I know how hard average bluegill fight. Couldn’t imagine what that one felt like.
Great story, but too bad there's not one shot of him holding the mount so we can get a perspective of just how large a 3 pound bluegill is.
That’s exactly what I was thinking
The biggest Bluegill I ever caught was back in the early 80's and weighed 1-1/4 pounds. I never got close to that size ever again.
That's a huge bluegill , I'd like to seen it
Freaking monster!
HA! glad this showed up in my feed. I knew Bob, Mike, Danny, the whole family and heard this story a hundred times if I've heard it once... 😂
love these record stories
Great story. Thank you sir for passing your passion for the outdoors to your son and grandson
Good for you Mike! I caught a 1.25lb bluegill fishing for bass and it is one of my most memorable catches
I truly love good fishing stories.

That's a cool story , I've caught plenty of bass with hooks still in their mouth but never one still attached to a fishing pole .
I hope you kept the fishing pole.
I used to get big ones in the lake feeder streams, in very late Autumn. While fishing nymph flys for late season trout. They like the same bugs trout do, apparently.

You gotta love those zebco 33s. I can't imagine a 3 lb blue gill. WOW! That is a hell of a record. Great video.
Awesome story really enjoyed this video !! 👍
My family has a pond in Louisiana
We had so many bluegill we fed them to our chickens to thin em out
Great eating
3lbs. Wow! I would show much appreciation over a good meal. Fantastic.
Awesome story! I remember my dad taking me fishing when I was really young, and yes, it was the bluegills we caught and grandma cooked up.
The biggest gill I've ever personally seen was a solid 2 lbs taken from Lake Waubesa Wisconsin in the late eighties.
I’m 34 now , but my whole childhood me and my grandfather would go to lakes or ponds all the time and catch tons of bluegill . One of my favorites to eat
i love the series of the records please do more

Could be bluegill green sunfish hybrids.
Uh huh, sounds legit........
That bluegill looks like someone filled him up with split shot.
Just kidding 🤣.
Now I am remembering the happy little pop of a surface strike, like snapping your fingers. Bass and trout are more of a bloop.
An ultralight rod, light line test, and an Arkie Minnow Crankbait and you'll catch one of these guys just about every cast. Extremely fun!
No matter the size there great fighting fish
i caught a 2.9 lb bluegill. sooo close!
Ezra janness sure, hmmm.
I caught one when i was younger on my catfish rod. It fought like a cat, but when i saw it i couldn't belive it. It was the size of a dinner plate. My dumb ass let it go :(
wOW that is a RECORD FISH. Andre the Giant bluegill
If the bass aren't hitting I'm grabbing my ultra light and going for bluegill or Warmouth.
I had a tape measure with me so I laid the fish along the tape measure and took a picture of it. The fish was 27 1/2 inches long. If you look on a measurement to wait chart that fish should’ve weighed maybe 14 bonds and pre-Span. The state record is 13 lb. 14 oz.
Wow nice !!! My fav fish to eat lol
I loved catching them but I hated scaling them. Learning to filet them was a great day for me!
This is great!
I caught a 6 lb bluegill got it on a 2lb cricket. L.O.L .
World record cricket.
My handicapped aunt caught the nc state record back in the 80s but it's been bested now
Just caught a 2 pound bluegill on 3/0 texas rig fishing for bass. I didnt know that would happen
I could have caught the Missouri state Bass record if a few things were a little different. I caught a huge bass out of my farm pond. Of course I was alone. Garrett Fobes put a few in there and that’ll change fast
Epstein didn’t kill himself Dang right. Put some in and joy some good old fashion bluegillin’!
Might need oxygen. Could try an aerator or plants
Awesome story!!!
Alright I have a would you rather. Would you rather have a pond with tiny gills and big bass or tiny bass and big gills
And ive caught a bluegill on a privet lake it was so big i couldn't get my hand around it to hold it to pull hook out i had to pin it down to get it out i cant even remember how big it was im guessing 12-13 inches biggest one ive ever seen in person
Alabama has the world record bluegill at 4lbs 12 oz . I have caught many heavy bluegill on a flyrod but never close to the record .
I actually have a record mounted bluegill that was in michigan out of doors its was my grandpas mom that caught it theres a video and pictures of it someplace she was given a free boat for catching it
My bass pro got a big blue gill in their aquarium.
That's amazing
I fish for bluegill to use as catfish bait and its always a fun time. Caught a very large one about a month ago and was debating on using him or letting him go. I have a pond where all the bluegill are massive and way more then 2 pounds but the bass are small
Are bluegill and sunfish the same ?
Somewhat, there are other subspecies
Hah ive got pics of this summers bluegill catch my boy caught... 30 years ive never seen one this big..
I caught a 1pound 7oz bluegill and I thought it was a 10 pound bass before I saw it.
Mine was 2.4 lbs and 11 inches long. Bank fishing.
The biggest I caught was a 1.2 pounder in my friends backyard pond. Thought that was a big fish and now I see this
"armed with his zebco and a can of worms." I think we can all relate to that.
My biggest one is around 12 inches long and close to 2 lbs
I didn't know a state record could be considered from a private pond!!
I was thinking the same thing
Ur kidding? Ya just gotta catch it out of some water, in the given State, jeesh. It don't matter if it is a pond, lake or river.
I caught a 16 inch bluegill
Holy god! How heavy was it or you can approximate?
The 1st time I took my oldest girl fishing she was 3. I had just caught and released a bluegill of just over a pound. She asked me if that was a good fish and said yes. For me. It was. Moments later she gives her fishing pole a big yank and horses in a 3 pound largemouth. Good thing she wasn't using a Barbie pole!
Which lake tho
Awsome
my biggest bluegill was ft long that weighed almost a pound
My biggest bluegill was 13 inches long and probably around the 2 pound mark. He was heavy
Caught one 1/4 inch shy of 12 inches
Man I can barely find 1 pound bluegills. Let alone some big bluegill like that.
That fish looks like it’s ready to explode!
I had to learn about blues cuz when I was a boy they’d snatch my bait so easily and it frustrated me
The sad part of catching a state record fish means you will probably never beat your own record again.
I have a test to do, why am I watching this???
Let's talk about bluegill
I once caught a Bluegill the size of a large dinner plate. I caught it on a rubber worm and lipped it just like a bass. It's mouth was the size of my middle finger and thumb forming a circle. I've caught some big bass in double digits but the only catch I ever considered mounting was that Bluegill. (I let it go) A ten plus bass is far easier to come by than a four maybe even five pound Gillrilla.
But hanging dead things on the wall as decor is tacky anyways.
Smartest comment I have seen here!
Gillrilla I'm stealing that my brother and I wold call 'em bullgills.
Every kid should go fishing
The record has never been beat because nobody has weighed their bluegill since 1963
I caught one that was 2 ibs and thought it must be a record. Google said not even close bud!
Got one that was 2 lbs
3 of the 10 I caught today were bigger than that.
I'm trying to catch the record green sunfish by far my favorite fish I'm pretty much just a pan Fisher. You'll see me guys
Did u get it yet?
I’m a pan fisherman too! Been so all my life
I caught a 13 inch bluegill
The lake at our cabin is absolutely lousy with great big blue gill. 2lb'ers are a dime a dozen.
dom with the dear
Caught a bluegill and used it to catch a huge catfish. Almost got a turtle too.
Mines a 1lb on bluegill...3lb wow
Bluegill nib at my gate so it is easy for them to get it.
Try using bait half the size of what your currently using they take tiny bites
The biggest I caught was a half pound nothing special but pretty big.
I just caught a bluegill that is 4lbs. Go to my Facebook Page I just caught it yesterday on a shallow diving minnow lure in a backwater pond that rarely gets fished by anyone.
Quit lying people might of believed a 2lb Gill
@@bluewidow9151 yeah, a 4 pound bluegill would basically be the world record
1989 caught bluegill that was 1lb. 2 ounces.....huge for Ohio.....damn that bluegill is fat!!
I believe I just caught the state record here in Ohio. 3.8666 lbs. Check it on Facebook page. Just caught it yesterday.
They mounted it...does that mean they didn’t not release it? I would have wanted to keep that fish’s DNA in my pond!!!
I like to fry them until they resemble potato chips with a little lemon and salsa there my favorite
Bluegills are just piranhas with a southern accent.
Oz per oz best fighting pan fish in USA.
I think green sunfish fight harder
I still think Bluegill
Fried gills and eggs. Yummy
3lbs! Wtf!?
Fish often, fish well my friends.
People who catch a lot of fish, fish a lot!
