Back in 1994, I was staying on Lake of the Woods and a native Canadian brought back a 56" Muskie that weighed in at 46 lb's. This chap had been adopted as a child by a U.S. Doctor who educated him to be an attorney. He always went back to LotW for vacation and to only pursue Muskie's. He claimed he was looking for a larger one he saw the previous year but was satisfied with this one. I remember comparing him to my office desk which was 60 inches and realizing this fish would just barely lay on the top. This guy was the consummate fisherman. I was proud of my 3 lb. walleye.

What I love about Muskie Fishing is the teamwork, the zero jealousy wishing you caught it and not your buddy, when it follows the first guy in and it keeps swimming his buddy points at it making sure that his other buddy keeps his bait moving to catch it, then immediately grabs the net, fuckin awesome work
Spot on from beginning to end. Net was as ready as the guy who ran it. Hook cutters ready to go, cameras running. Great photos in a very timely manner. Handling the big ones "perfectly" is impossible but this was as good as it gets. Awesome fish!

That was awesome that you showed the removal of the hooks and how it was done in a way that didn't cause undue stress to the fish. Most muskie anglers on TH-cam cut that part of the video and only show the catch and rarely the release.
I went walleye trolling at Lake Erie once and hooked into a HUGE Muskie, but we didn’t have a big enough net to land him, and he got away. That fish still haunts me.

@youtube user im no expert (obviously) so I could be wrong and I know this is an old comment, but the hooks don't stay in the mouth forever. Depending on the type of hook, they will typically come out within a few weeks. It ain't uncommon for people to cut the hooks on toothy fish because of the potential threat of getting your hand tore up. But, again, take my words as they are, just an opinion
This is a good example why it's hard to muskie fish by yourself. Imagine catching something like this alone, with a small boat in he middle of nowhere. Great job handling the fish and releasing it, nice video.
Pro fish handle! Kudos for the footage and the respect shown for that old fish. when a big ski like that inhales a bait it can be a real battle to sort out your lure. You made that look easy!
Good lord. We have nordic pike in Finland. They grow up pretty big sometimes, but whenever I see musky videos they kind of freak me out. What absolute monsterfish :D

THAT WAS FREAKING AWESOME GUYS. I have been an avid fisherman for 35+ years and this beautiful creature is one that I haven’t caught YET. I’m a bass fisherman 24/7 but this amazing beauty is a fish I will catch one day for sure. I live in southwest pa about an hour and a half from Pittsburgh pa. There aren’t many places I can go within a reasonable distance to catch these beauties. Great video guys keep them coming I just subscribed and can’t wait to watch more.
Amazing fish guys but I'm with quite a few of the other comments about cutting the hooks, surely micro barbed or barbless hooks would be a better option? I can understand if the hooks are deep or completely swallowed but in the mouth and visible surely taking the whole hook out is a better option?

Heck of a net man you got there. Bailed on the first scoop where the hooks could have tangled in the mesh with the fish not in the bag. The fish was hooked good, but if you lost a fish like that on a bad net job, could be rough on your relationship. LOL
Awesome job! 🎣. Have you ever heard of pouring a sugary drink like gator aid on the injured gills? I’ve never had to do this but another Muskie channel says sugar will stop the bleeding. Any thoughts?
We were fortunate that this fish was not bleeding, but I've been in many scenarios where there is bleeding in the gills. I'm familiar with the idea of using Mountain Dew, Coke, or other acidic, sugary liquids to stop a bleed and my advice would be NOT to do it...for multiple reasons. For one, that's a completely foreign substance to a fish and can throw off their chemistry overall. If, in fact, the liquid were to cauterize a bleed in the sensitive gills, that result would be short term and the long term effect of that cauterization would be an inability of that gill to exchange gases, affecting their "breathing." With muskies especially, their "slime" is crucial for keeping out bacteria and pathogens. Pouring acidic liquid on that slime can't possible be good for the fish. If there's a bleed, the fish will need that slime to keep bacteria out, as it recovers. Fish blood clots underwater, in their natural habitat, so...all that said, the best thing to do with a bleeding fish is to keep them in the water, remove or cut out the hooks, skip pictures, and hold them a little deeper in the water, where the pressure is stronger. Drink the Gatorade and know that you did what you could to ensure a healthy release.
Were the hookpoints you cut off lodged in the gill arches? Is there any research on how well fish survive when this happens? Is there any discussion of single barbless hook regulations in musky fishing? I ask because our trophy steelhead fisheries all have that regulation and it is strongly supported by anglers. That being said, our steelhead are also subject to commercial and indian gillnet fisheries, which I don't think is an issue for muskies so their probably isn't the same conservation concerns.

When she turned and faced you immediately after the hookset, and then opened up her mouth, I thought she was going to spit it out. Lucky she inhaled it and the hooks found a good spot. Also, get a jaw-spreader, gents. Great fish! Thanks for the footage.
Awesome catch, and *great* job of handling 'er. Couldn't quite make out the length, but it looked like 52". A real fatty, for sure! Doing it solo is a challenge, but I've handled some real nice ones. I mash down the barbs of hooks, have a pen net, all the tools, and a 5ft musky live well to unhook, hold, and revive fish for pics. For solo pics, I've rigged up a 3ft long stick with RAM mounts to attach the stick to the boat about 8ft from the rear and the camera to the stick, and use Canon digital cameras that have a 30 second delay 10 burst shots self-timer option. That way it's possible to unhook, measure, and take a pic with the fish being out of the water for less than 30 seconds at a time. Often when a fish is hooked in the gill area, it's possible to pass the rear hook back through the gills, cut it off at the split ring outside of the gill, and then unhook the front hook(s) easily. BTW, what the background tune? Really dig it.

The hooks were buried in the gill arches. We attempted to back them out, prior to cutting them, but they were twisted in there good.

That's about it max. The largest I've seen was 25lb and this muskie is not a lot bigger. Unfortunately it wasnt my catch Haha.
Bro what that was 53 inches that’s around 48 pounds plus the musky tail was half missing so that’s probably 54 inches
