      Andy Lee it’s funny because me, the team and the coach knew that literally every practice, he would try to dunk while everyone was shooting around and we thought it was funny. I had never heard of the “no dunking in warmups before a game” rule and the coach obviously did but he never thought to tell my friend lol. the punishment in practice was more because of us not keeping our focus before the game because we were all dying laughing when he missed

    The rule isn’t for show boating or flaunting your stuff. The rule is there so you don’t break accidentally break the backboard on a dunk during dead ball. If that does happen, you can’t play anymore and have to find another gym or replace the entire goal. Either way, it’s a stupid long delay. It’s like that for dead ball and not live ball because dead ball, everything can be avoided. Live ball, not so much. In other words, dead ball actions are all preventable and live ball is not so much preventable.

    There was an NCAA rule that banned dunking in game because of Kareem (or Lou Alcindor at the time) between '67 & '77. The famous story is that David Thompson (NC State) in his final home game in '75 threw down a huge dunk on a break away & got a technical but the crowd loved it

    • @JStarStar00
      @JStarStar00 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many players would score on illegal dunks in the years 67-76. Some were unintentional -- guys would try to shoot layups and accidentally get their hand on top of the ball -- but sometimes it was fully intentional, the guys would throw down monster dunks.

      It doesn't matter, because the rule isn't to stop showboating, it's to stop equipment damage. Dunking can break the backboard, bend the rim and more. Replacing that equipment is a massive delay, and a huge cost. They aren't thinking about the rule or doing their research they're just going "hurr durr its a dumb rule because I don't understand it"

    • @donaldking2563
      @donaldking2563 6 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      Arcadius Rex lol it was definitely a showboating thing because you’re allowed to dunk until the refs come onto the floor and the 20 minute clock starts. Rims are designed to bend and return and normal people aren’t breaking them.

      @brucemercer7753 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@donaldking2563 It wasn't a dumb rule. It was just dumb they didn't get rid of it sooner. Today's rims are designed NOT to BEND or Break or Shatter the Backboard.
      But when they wrote the rule the Rims were literally just a metal hoop attached to a thin piece of metal anchored to Fiberglass.
      They were EASY to bend and destroy... look at any basketball court in the 70's in a rough neighborhood and you find a bent or broken off rim.
      As a kid I don't know how many times we went to the nearest Park to play basketball only find there were no rims intact.
      We have to play with just a bent Metal Backboard.
      And the Fiberglass... when it shattered it could do enough damage that you could lose your ARM or be BLINDED.
      Back then NOBODY hung on the Rim because it was freaking DANGEROUS.
      They put several years Research into making Rims and Backboards that are designed to take the kind of abuse the Goal can take today.
      But you only tend to find those Goals in College and the Pros and maybe some very well funded High Schools.

    It is a valid thing for high school games. It can definitely be intimidating. When I was younger I wasn’t incredibly good, but I could jump and dunk. In the military I was in a basketball league on-post. Despite not even being one of the 3 best scorers, I started every single game getting doubled just because I was dunking in pregame.
    I couldn’t shoot, I couldn’t really dribble well, and I was never playing as a slashing wing who was going to Russel Westbrook past you and throw it down. But them seeing the 6’1 white kid dunk made them believe I was the primary scorer. Worked out for us I guess

    My high school had a coach go 54 years without getting a technical foul (Ron Brown, Centralia HS). We had a foreign exchange student dunk during the warm ups of the first game of the year (having no idea about this rule). In Washington, the technical foul goes to the coach. So, we had to spend a bunch of time convincing the referees to not give him a technical foul for it, in fear our coach would get the T.

      Back before breakaway rims they didn't want any way for the game to be affected outside of play. So if a player bent the rim/ broke the backboard outside of the game or the teams inspection of the court it is a technical foul. Not that hard to understand, completely reasonable rule when college gyms were on par with elementary schools of today.

I was warming up and i jumped to touch the rim to warm my legs up. I got some extra bounce and my hand wrapped around the rim out of instinct. Popped the rim. Boom technical.

    In finnish basketball cup, where there are teams from 2nd to 4th highest leagues, if there is a game between a team from 2nd league and a team from 3rd/4th, team that has lower ranking gets some amounts of free throws before the game. Number of throws depends on their ranks.

    I actually saw that rule live!
    Story:
    My local HS basketball team was in the 2nd round in the playoffs. They were down 5 during halftime. Both teams came out of the locker rooms and warmed-up for a little bit. During the layup lines, one of the guys on the other team did a dunk.
    My local team's coach called him out to the refs. There was a 15-minute conversation between the refs, the coaches, and the scorekeepers to figure out what to do. The refs finally found the rule, gave the dunker the technical foul, and gave my local team the 2 shots. The kid for my local team made them both, but we ended up losing by 7.

    In football, a lot of matches every season don't start with a 0-0 score. In the Champions League and Europa league, the knockout rounds are two matches each, playing at each of the teams' home stadiums. So in the second leg of the semi-final, for example, you can end up starting the game like 3-0 ahead of the other team. Also in those ties, away goals count for _more_ points than regular goals, except they're not actually displayed on the score at the top left of the screen. It only matters when there's a tie. Say one team won their home leg of the match 2-1, but then in the second tie that's away, the other team wins 1-0. The score may say 2-2 overall for both games, but the team with the most away goals wins, meaning the other team wins, because they had one away goal in the first match, while the first team scored both their goals at home. So no extra time or penalties, the other team just wins, and that's that. Leads to some odd situations sometimes where one team is losing the match but they don't attack at all, they just park the bus and try not to let the other team score any goals, because that way they can get through on away goals alone. They're some of the most entertaining matches funnily enough

    There are a bunch of rules against showboating in every sport that are antiquated and need to be removed. Baseball is the worst.

    • @Loogaroo1
      @Loogaroo1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If it affects the equipment (like hanging on the rim in basketball or "dunking" over the goalpost in football) I think it's OK having a rule against it. Otherwise it ventures into "no fun allowed" territory.

    • @brucemercer7753
      @brucemercer7753 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Calem LePage The rules are for TAUNTING. Not showboating. Good sportsmanship is a Virtue that Sports are supposed to teach.
      Taunting, if not penalized, would change every game into TEAM FIGHTING. Baseball would be all about who cracks open the most skulls with their Bat.
      No. The rules against showboating do not be removed. Why have ANY rules when every game is just going to be a FIGHT?
      If anything penalties for showboating should be more severe to cut that BS out.

    As people have mentioned, it is still a rule in high school. But the technical goes against the coach and not the player. In the 90's my high school's team had a major feud with the head coach. In a huuuge rivalry game the players colluded to get the coach ejected. Two players dunked the ball in pregame, the coach received 2 technical fouls and was ejected before the tip off. He resigned shortly after the game.

    Hey @Rysimmons
    I can't remember the specifics but there was a basketball player (I want to say HS or College) that showed up late because he had a parent pass away the day before. Since he was a late addition the other team got 2 free throws and the coach said "you know what to do" to the kid taking the free throws. He missed them both by 10 feet and they played the game.
    I also remember a team getting their uniforms stolen so the other team got 2 free throws for each of the starting 5 and each player that was subbed in after and I believe the same thing happened.
    I know this wouldn't be as in line as your normal videos but I really liked the stories.

This is a case of just because you can do something doesn't mean you should lol. I don't really find dunks all that impressive anyways especially when the person doing it is over 6 foot tall. Bit more impressive if someone under 5'10" does it though.
