Yunchan Lim's host family was Dr. Jeffrey G. Detweiler, a pathologist in Fort Worth, Texas. He left the following message on his SNS : "His typical practice schedule was starting around 1-2 pm, finishing around 4 am. He would take a short break, 30 minutes or so, for dinner that his mom cooked. I typically made him something to eat around 1 am. He likes toasted English muffins with butter and strawberry preserves.He never drank coffee only water. During practice, he would play a short passage several times, recording himself on his phone. Then listen to himself. Repeat the process until he was satisfied. He frequently would change the rhythm of a passage. I ask why. He said so I can get my fingers to be equal. He loves trees. Our house is so quiet now that he has returned to Korea. What an honor to have shared our lives with such a phenomenal person. Bravo Yun-chan!"

You know Marin thoroughly enjoyed the performance of her life with Yunchan Lim is when she croaked and teared up when she announced the latter's name as the winner. To her at least, as an expert, that Rach 3 couldn't have gone anymore perfect than it already is.

Dimitri Bashkirov her teacher Anastasia Virsaladze teach saying to Bashkirov the Most important Lesson is the Love of the beautiful colorful piano sound! All the modern players are colorless dry cold piano sound players like Kristian Zimerman( robot with colorless tone!) Kissin( ice cold piano sound!) Pletnev and student Yunchan Lim! Yup! Marin Alsop wipes away a tear yet again! She wiped a tear after Yunchan completed the Rach 3 concerto.
The conductor was tearing up calling out Lim's name. What a performance between the two! Truly Amazing and remarkable. I was so deeply touched.

I think she was.There were quite many emotional moments during her conduct with Yunchan Lim and announcement. It was at least four times that I saw her trying not to cry.

@@makejarvin - here is a few. There were more on TH-cam by Clayton fans, but that's too hard to find. They were saying, an authentic human should've won, not a Korean robot that imitates art lol.
The last one... by "industry" he/she meant K-pop/BTS (popular Korean boy Pop band) industry. So basically, YC Lim is a sensation cuz he's like a BTS member.

Pretty ironic you guys all say he’s such a great virtuoso player of Liszt and Rachmaninoff but hope he will “have a chance to grow and mature as an artist”…. Horowitz was a great virtuoso but not really a great thinker of deep artist. That’s why he’s so good with Liszt and Rach. Most of these circus monkeys can’t cope with Mozart and Beethoven.
That’s nice but can he play Mozart and Beethoven?
Rachmaninoff and Liszt are for the circus monkeys.

By all accounts, there is much to admire in his playing, and based on his final round concerti, it’s hard not to declare him the most exciting of the finalists. But is he as complete an artist as Geniushene, Sun, Shin, or Liu? Is he as mature as they to withstand the rigors of a major touring career? As I heard his name announced as the winner, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of the prize and expectations crush the poor sweet soul who couldn’t even muster the wherewithal to smile sincerely or to show true emotion as he apologetically walked across the stage.

My God, the many hours they must be sitting and practicing and they make it look so easy...I can never get enough of watching and listening...thank you for the videos, this is my only way to see these wonders on legs with magic hands that have the will to sit and practice so many hours...

I had the privilege of meeting Maestro Cliburn in 1976, shaking those big ole’ Texan hands and asking him to sign (which brought tears to his eyes) the LP cover of my copy of his award winning 1958 performance in Moscow. It is framed and proudly hangs in my study. CONGRATULATIONS to all competitors and of course the Medalists. 🎹
P.S. May I recommend reading “Moscow Nights” by Nigel Cliff. Wonderful book about this competition’s namesake. 🎼

Yunchan received $107,500 USD in cash prizes for the Gold Medal + Audience Award + Best Performance of a New Work. however all 3 medallist’s total prizes are worth over $1 million as they are all booked for 3 years of commission-free concert tours and get to keep all proceeds.
