New Tires Destroyed After 2 Days! RV Suspension Problems | Costly Repairs

  • ✔️ About the Episode:
This is Part 2 of what we call our "Tire Saga". In this episode, we take our brand new tires on a road trip from Maine to Ohio on our route to finishing the Lower 48 States. However, we quickly realized that our road trip was going to come to a complete stop very quickly. After 2 days of driving, we found our tires worn down on the inside of both rear tires on the same axle.
Yep, a classic bent axle sign and every mile leads us closer to the infamous tire "Blowout". Knowing that we have big suspension issues, we quickly get on the phone and start calling for new replacement tires. Two sets of brand new tires in only a few days. This is a costly RV suspension issue that will plague us for many more miles yet to come.

Hey Lee I feel bad for about tires, absolutely heartbreaking. To save your back and something you don’t want to have to use all the time is a Dewalt 1/2” impact driver. It has enough torque to do the camper and your truck. Better than an air wrench

Just found your channel so I've only watched the two vids about your tire problem. first I have to say I don't know how
y'all are so upbeat and cool about this...and with 2 young'uns ....just amazing. I know UTubers vids are not posted in real time but sure wish yours weren't so far behind during this time as I have a coach and know the place that does my work up in Nappanee, IN might not have been able to fix your problem right away but I'm sure they would have diagnosed it for you. Might have been the video angle but at one point it looked to me like your axel had a slight bend in it. Wishing y'all the best and you are one lucky man to have a lady like you have sir!

Thank you so much for the great comment and warm regards. You guys are great! You are spot on with the videos. Life happens much faster than we can turn them into videos. :) We thought we would be able to find someone to help out while we were in Indiana. However, we weren't able to find anyone at all that had availability sooner than 4-6 months. We were thankful that we had someone scheduled in Michigan that would do the diagnostic for us. Thank you so much for the great support! The RV Community is, by far, the best part of RV'ing! If you don't know something, then just ask your neighbor. LOL. Thanks again and all the best, Pam & Lee

I'm sure y'all have thought this through well, but I'm curious. Why burn through two pairs of top-of-the-line tires...$1200 plus a ratchet breaker bar... to get to a Camping World?? If it's a warranty issue, couldn't you have gotten approval from Jayco or Lippert to get the work done someplace closer, like a truck-trailer axle shop perhaps? Even fronting the repair cost then waiting for a refund would be less stress/work/ulcers.
You're rocking those frameless glasses, Pam. Looking good!!!

    • @discoveryboundrv
      @discoveryboundrv  ปีที่แล้ว +1

The short answer is that we didn’t know we had a bent axle at the time and we didn’t know the tires would go bad so fast. We called over 20 places from Maine to Michigan and we couldn’t find anyone to do any repairs for 4-6 months. Camping world in Michigan was the only one to take us in 2 weeks. This was during last summer when everyone was still in the RV frenzy. Instead of loosing our reservations we just kept on our path. It would have cost us more to break existing reservations and make new ones last minute during summer rates. Also, axles are built to order. When we called Dexter it would be a 1 month build once we place the order. Hence, just get to the place we already booked and wait it out. 😀👍 More to follow.

Hello to you all. New subscriber here...
I just found you this morning with us following a few full timers here on TH-cam for a while now. We too are now doing the fulltime adventuring for 6 months now while we "snowbird" in the desert of eastern Californian not far from the Laughlin area.
I've got to spend some of my time with the hours and hours of video I've got and get my vlog going and watching you and what you've done with your editing, music, just all you're showing here is just so impressive and amusing as well! You really are doing an amazing job as I watch only the second of my experience of your creations! (Still early on this rainy New Years Day though!)
We also have a North Point. 377RLBH 2018 with the Duramax Dually, LB,Crew and LTZ trim on it to drag this big ol' beast where ever we end up when spring time shows up again to take us to some stops, like WORLDS LARGEST BALL OF TWINE along the way to Florida. (I am one to NEED TO see the silly stuff like that!)
I can agree with the investment in the either DEWALT or, my favorite is the MILWAULKEE brands of the impact drill for the lugs on the trailer. You've save SO MUCH time and effort regardless of doing this so many times or just once in a long while.
Really am enjoying your vids and going on a little bit of a worthless day splurge so far this morning!
    Always remember....
Be Happy. Be safe. Most of all.... Enjoy life the best you can. After all.... it's the only chance we all get!

The problem is that we spent 2 days calling around and couldn't find anyone to do the inspection. It was the summer and everyone was still in RV frenzy. Packed campgrounds and packed repair shops. The Camping World in Michigan was the only shop that would take us in within 2 weeks. The problem was that we had to get there first. I bought a brand new 7000 lb. Bri-Mar dump trailer.
The first time I went to dump it I noticed something was wrong with one of the axels, it was bowed in the wrong direction. (there made with a curve, so as there loaded it sits straight)
I contacted the dealer where I bought it and they where uses less!
I called Bri-Mar and they told me it was not there problem, to call Dexter.
I called Dexter, and they must have know there was an issue, because all they asked was for me to read the bar code off the axel and they would send me a new one, but would not pay to have it installed. WTH!
They had welded the brackets on the wrong side of the axel!
I also found they installed the brake wires wrong and they where crushed.

Obviously your videos lag from shooting to posting, but darn if you didn't route through locations between this and your last video where you could have had repairs properly done at heavy truck/trailer repair shops so as to not eat tires and risk blowout... I had to have a shop do a frame repair in order for Lippert to pay for it even though I am both an engineer and certified welder, and had our coach into and out of the truck repair same week! Definitely don't think you need to go to an RV repair, and I strongly recommend not using Camping World for anything! Nonetheless, you guys haven't been RVing long and you're learning and your trials and tribulations will help others too. RV long enough, it will make you an adept repairperson as it becomes a necessity to be as self-sufficient as possible. Hopefully the next video will be of proper repairs to your Jayco! Safe journeys.

In Maine we said, just replace the tires and move on. It wasn’t until Cleveland that we realized we had a bigger issue. We even routed through Elkhart, IN and couldn’t find anyone to diagnose it. Everyone was booked for months. We are long past a full repair now and we laugh at ourselves, but it’s all a learning experience on the road. Everyone gets to see us clueless and unfiltered. It’s maddening about the repeated tire replacement. It’s even more maddening about how long it takes to get into a repair shop. A couple thoughts…
Have you thought about calling a mobile repair tech? Maybe they could at least diagnose what’s up and if it’s an axle they could possibly get authorization from the manufacturer to order parts.
Also you REALLY need to get yourself a cordless 1/2” impact gun. Break the lug nuts loose with a breaker bar, zip then on/off with the impact, and check with the torque wrench. Easier peasier.

    • @discoveryboundrv
      @discoveryboundrv  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Shane. You are 💯 on all points. The mobile repair guys we called weren’t authorized by Dexter to perform the evaluation. It could only be someone authorized by Dexter to submit the evaluation report. Guess who was authorized…Yep, Camping World. Also, the only reason we didn’t use our impact drill was because it was earlier in the morning each time we did this and we didn’t want to wake our neighbors. LOL. Trying to be good RVers here. We tried several of them and we couldn’t find an RV park near the truck repair center. The axle would take a month to build from Dexter. There were no axles available. Also at the time the RV parks were booked for the summer. We were in a tough spot indeed. Best, Pam & Lee

Poop happens! I put all new tires on my trailer, the next one was flat, I fount a screw in it, I plugged it and want to work. I get to the job and another one is flat, there was a framing nail sticking out of the side wall, WTH!.
I had to replace my truck windshield to get it inspected, had it replaced, got it inspected, crossing a bridge the very same day a truck carrying stone tossed out a rock and busted the windshield.

Wow !!. . . That's significant damage in such a short distance. Since it's both sides, I'd check: 1) Axle alignment: looks like the wheels are dragging. My guess is that you have loose bolts somewhere on that axle that as caused it to shift when you hit a bump. Have a mechanic check the alignment and adjust if that's the cause. 2) Have the wheel bearings and spindle nuts checked. Do the wheels have play on the spindle when they are properly torqued? I'd put my money on #1 since it seems to have happened suddenly on your way up to Bar Harbor. Also, bearings usually fail on one side or the other, not both sides at the same time. Needs proper diagnosis by a good RV/trailer mechanic ASAP. Look at your video pulling into the Arrowhead Campsite at 9:40 to 9:50. Looks like the rear axle and wheels are carrying most of the load. Are you too heavy in the rear? Maybe the front of the trailer needs to be lower if the rig is not level while driving. Just guesses on my part . . . Not sure if a bent axle would cause this type of tire wear, but can't rule that out. Hope it's only misalignment, height adjustment or weight redistribution - that would be cheapest to fix. Bent axle . . . ouch!
** It's not the tires themselves. The tire wear is the symptom not the problem itself.**

We did, but we couldn’t find anyone to help fix it. During last summer, all the repair shops were booked out for months. At the time, we didn’t know it was an axle issue. Our thought was to change the tires and get to the repair shop in Michigan. They were the only ones that would take us in within 2 weeks. We didn’t know our issue was that bad. Live and learn, right! All the best, Pam & Lee

I like to use Google street view to check out over passes that aren't listed in rand McNally motor carriers map. To know what the bridge height is. Either by sign on bridge or sign between bridge and nearest intersection. Sometimes you will see a truck going under the bridge. Be careful doing that because not all semi trailers are 13' 6" tall. Some are shorter in height. When all else fails. I zoom in on screen and see if it looks like it's been hit a lot.
