Guys that was more annihilation rather than renovation :)
I have to say you guys have guts. Cheers for that.
Great work, can't wait to see the recovery :)

It needs to be done mate, the lawn loves it! Already growing well and needs a cut ✂️

You could drop napalm on a Kikuyu lawn and it'll regrow mate. I just sprayed my backyard out (kikuyu) as I'm replacing it. Still took a fortnight to die off with roundup and fusilade.
PS. I've got the ryobi scarifier (2x 18V) and it works a treat! I run it through my Empire Zoysia on the higher settings occasionally.

Despite the shocking temps in Vic it’s starting to pop through very nicely already. Might even get a mow tomorrow 👌

There's only one machine that can scalp Kikuyu and that's a Victa 2 stroke utility! Good job in a bog hole

In Victoria when is it to late to do this to the lawn?

    • @LawnLads
      @LawnLads  ปีที่แล้ว +1

We haven’t really had the temperatures to even do this yet. Ideally you need temps on mid 20s plus for 2-4 weeks for recovery so there is plenty of time

Is that washed river sand? Of a mix of sand & soil that u applier over the top? Man I just put 1 tonne of washed river sand on my 100sqm of buffalo and found soooo many tiny stones within the washed river sand once I watered it in :( you can’t notice them when the sand arrives, just looks like good sand… so disappointed and frustrating. I’ve always usually gone 80:20 mix but decided washed river sand this year for my reno as lots of people say it’s the best.. little do I know I’ve got hundreds of tiny rocks now.. what the hell.. surely washed river sand shouldnt come like this??, given it’s the most recommended sand for buffalo top dress drainage and levelling? Do u think my buff will be OK & my mower will just be picking up a few stones in my next mow after a week or so since laying the sand? What are your thoughts pls lads

      Thanks for commenting mate.
You’ll always get tiny rocks in washed river sand as that’s how it is. Aslong as they are very small and done sit up on the surface of your lawn it will be fine.
If you have a cylinder I’d be very cautious mowing with it until the grass is recovered enough where it’s 95% covered if your worried about damaging your reel. With a rotary your fine to crack on and sharpen or replace blades once your done.

@@LawnLads I see. So then why is it recommended for top dress if it’s fully of tiny stones? Shouldn’t these be removed? How come in the 80/20 mix of sand/soil there aren’t any stones? What’s the sand used in that? I’ve heard of Sandy loam, is that better than washed river? I use a rotary on my buff so I’m thinking to mow it 7 days since top dress even tho it’s actively growing- do u think that’s a good wait period? Also, daily watering once a day in the late arvo?

Not sure mate, the sands we have used have been great.
80/20 is probably a triple washed sand which has finer granules.
Sandy loam is no good for topdressing as it brings in a lot of weed seeds. Always stick to sand.
We just mowed ours today and it’s been 7 days. I’d judge it on length, as you want to avoid taking more than 1/3rd of the leaf off as you’ll hit the crown of the plant meaning you’ll either need to drop lower or raise your height up slightly to avoid scalping it in future.
I’d be trying to water daily for 5-10 mins to keep it moist. If you have rain forecasted you’ll be fine not watering.
Always water early morning, never in the late arvo as you have the potential of causing fungal disease in your turf especially if you’ve just cut your lawn and then leave water sitting on the leaf blade overnight.

@@LawnLads alright cool. Thanks for taking the time to respond and provide your advice. I think I’ll still with 80/20 from here on in future just to avoid stones in the washed river sand. Will mow it in 7 days time as well. Wanna give it time to grow, let the sand properly seep in and then give it a good cut. 5-10 mins is definitely less than what I was thinking. I’ll lay off the watering for sure then. What do u think of top soiling multiple times in the growing season? Any benefit? Or no need? Cheers lads

If your levels are average you can do a couple of light topdress rather than one heavy one to help it recover quicker.
I’d recommend finding a nice triple washed sand (like sandpit sand), that will do the job and have no rocks.
You just want to keep the soil profile a little moist to help the lawn recover quicker from the renovation.
      Good luck mate 🤙🏽

We don’t use any kikuyu seed. We laid eureka kikuyu slabs
