@@dreamcastdazia4753 Reincarnation was a major thing in naruto and it was terribly executed, really made me hate the character because he earned nothing in the series, child of prophecy and a litteral reincarnation with demon fox powers just handed to him. you are just in complete denial about the importance of reincarnation in naruto. Even though the creator retconned it at the end of the story it still doesn't change the fact that it was important and technically it had everything to do with naruto because the side characters all became useless in the final war where Naruto and Sasuke the 2 reincarnations were most important.
I'd agree with you if the evidence for Buggy being a parallel of Oda himself wasn't so strong. I mean think about it, both are silly, perverted, and nonsensical, but both are also extremely skilled at planning events out decades ahead of time, and could kill any other character in the story with a flick of their wrist, 0 difficulty.
Well if he had a good writing consultant, it'd be the best, but oda isn't as skilled a writer we'd like to belive he is; He leaves so much holes. And inconsistencies that we like to ignore and just see all the good parts. One piece is good, but we have to make huge assumption of what he meant/tried to do with his story. When he usually fails to deliver in terms of story telling, by kicking the can down the road with the promise of the real pay off.

That said. I could eventually see Katakuri becoming the Big Bro of his family after Big Mom's defeat. Changing the dynamic of the family and ACTUALLY creating a paradise for all races given that he HAS a motivation to do so. He was shamed for his appearance since he was a kid and his sister suffered for it. It would make sense for Katakuri's character to stay at Totland and make it the paradise it was always intended to be. And he has the maturity and the power to see that through. That's why he asked Luffy to come back and defeat his own mother. Because he wants Totland to become all it can be but it can't with BM in power and he knows he is not strong enough to do it himself. So. If. *IF* you want to draw parallels between the old a new eras. Katakuri is Big Mom. A better version of her that is. And even that is a sketchy parallel at best

Dr sam Doflamingo is genuinely evil and Akainu killed his brother. Bellamy isn't half as bad as those two, he was just misguided and a bit of an asshole but he was never evil.
It's actually important that Luffy has differences from Roger. Shanks' role in the story seems to be finding someone like Roger, and ensuring he doesn't make the same mistakes. Shanks grew up watching Roger charge into battle against anyone who insulted his friends, and Shanks recognized that danger. He gave his arm so that Luffy would remember the importance of avoiding unnecessary battles. An important point of Marineford was that Ace inherited his father's refusal to back down, and died because of it. Shanks even points out how badly he wants Luffy to never make that mistake as he leaves Whitebeard's grave. Luffy may carry the same will as Roger, but their differences might end up making all the difference in the end.
I think that’s shown the best in impel down when jimbe helps luffy realize he shouldn’t confront Blackbeard. Having his friends guide him to not making the same mistakes that his brother did.
I know plenty of Alcoholic, Zoro's a light weight. A real alcoholic is down the Pub binge drinking for 3 days straight, can't even walk straight. Spends all their money on booze. Zoro spend hours trainning and weight lifting. Zoro's drinking does not interfere with his dream to be the Worlds greatest Sword fighter.

We can also refer to Inuarashi's words to Nami about the first and second journey of the pirate king and the Log Pose. Notice how the straw hats have been guided by people from Roger's crew. Of course Luffy gets the hat from Shanks but shortly after setting sail, he encounters Buggy. Then they meet Crocus, then Rayleigh, then Inuarashi and Nekomamushi. Each one of these characters have played a major role in changing the path of their journey to the One Piece.
I completely agree with you, but people like bloodlines as it creates a narrative rhythm which gives a direction where the story is going. I despise bloodlines especially as it becomes an excuse for growth not a tool to demonstrate development of the character for my biggest example is "Zoro is a descendant of Ryuma and/or from Wano" theory. People desire to force a parallel between Zoro and the Wano people so much that everyone already believe it's canon. This of course goes the same for Luffy but it's Shounen so we all kinda expected a powerful bloodline and him being a prophesied one.
This is one of the falsified parallels that physically cause me pain... plus the more information we get about Roger I'm starting to think he was just a swordsman and not a DF user. I've always wondered why Shanks is so opposed to DFs and I feel it's likely because the Roger Pirates had the same ideology. I don't yet have 100% evidence for that

The only thing holding that theory is because it was stated during Luffy's battle with Lucci that "Gear 2nd takes a great toll on the users body, shortening the lifespan of the one using it." Coincidentally, Roger came with "a disease that cannot be cured." What disease cannot be cured? Shortened lifespan.
This is a huge thing. People try to fit characters like Law into the role of characters from Rogers day by saying he’ll be the next Whitebeard as you say then miss what seem to be more deliberate ones like Garp/Sengoku and Luffy/Law as a “grandson” duo who have similar dynamics of personality. Like you said Luffy is a lot like Garp even if he shares Rogers view of freedom.
I blame naruto for this mentality. In Naruto, every generation has the same archetype in team 7. Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura, Obito/Kakashi/Rin, Tsunabe/Jiraiya/0rochimaru, etc... This is the reason why People feel that in Onepiece the same archetype will repeat themselves. in a different generations.

Interestingly, Obito/Kakashi/Rin is probably the most unique one. While the Sannin and Team 7 were portrayed as carbon copies, and the women all ended up in the same role, I liked how there was depth to the Obito/kakashi/rin one. In some aspects, Naruto and Obito resembled each other, kind, wanted to be hokage, goofballs, etc while kakashi and sasuke were the cool, suave, elite, style persona, yet Naruto and Kakashi are also alike, and Sasuke and Obito are too, Naruto and adult Kakashi both became Hokage, wanted to save their friend, have some similar ideology, and Sasuke and Obito were Uchihas who were as Obito put it "fellow traitors" who went on a dark path. So while I do agree that the Team 7 archetype repeated often and contirbuted to the forced parallel mindset, Obito Kakashi Rin wasnt just a simple archetype reflection. It still is but it it followed two different parallels simultaneously with Naruto/Sasuke and Kakashi/Obito which i wish more people would acknowlege (though the argument of how successful it was is completely different).

This argument is the whole "Destiny" theme, which didn't work for Naruto in my opinion. If Luffy was destined to find the One Piece/be Pirate King, that would hurt the story (but with the OP fandom probably not that that much).

@That boy Thats interesting because I think this introduce an interesting dynamic between Luffy and Blackbeard: Destiny vs Free Will. Blackbeard and his crew think that everything is happening because of "fate" Blackbeard sees the world as his oyster and taking everything for himself. His path to become pirate king is not so much of having freedom to do so, is because Blackbeard sees his role as destined to be, which is why Whitebeard's remarks on Blackbeard make sense because those who have the "D" are shown to act in ways that go against the norm of the world and they end up causing havoc for others. Luffy's free spirit is what counter acts anything that has to do with destiny because the One Piece wasn't made for him to find, anybody can find it and become Pirate king. However, the fact that he's willing to strive to become this greater person on his own accord and because he wants to do it, makes him more worthy to have the Will of D and frequently makes him a better pirate than Blackbeard. at Least something like that.

I do, because their fates were intertwined from episode 1, or chapter 2. Plus, my perception of the relationship between those two is different from a typical pirate/marine relationship.
Nor Ruffy nor Coby will achieve anything by being adversaries to each other. The One Piece world isnt black an white and theere are people in the marines that have interests that would align with even pirates. Coby has no interest in stopping Ruffy, he is no obstacle for him. I rather see the whole story work out in a way that Coby will realize the freedom fighting Pirates and revolutionaries ideals to be somewhat reflective to his own ideals.

This video makes me realise how little we know of Garp' philosophy and motives since there just isn't enough information about Garp as a character during Roger's era. For example why did he join the marines or why did he side with Roger during Battle of the God Valley. Basically we know very little on one of the most important characters of the series. On the flipside even though we just have a chapter's worth of info on Rocks we still can comfortably draw a parallel between Teach and him.
I've been saying this for some time. I lowkey feel Garp is being built up to have one the saiddest stories in One Piece. On key thing to note is that Garp is like Luffy in appearing carefree. Yet luffy never talked about his past or sad moments, like sabos death or being beating up. Just his backstory in geneal he was very quiet about. Garp is the same way i feel. He has a face of carefreeness but theres a lot of stuff connected to him. His son is public enemy no1? Thats gotta be sad for him. His grandsons became notorious outlaws? We new how much that pained him. But more interestingly, the fact that luffy didnt seem to have a mother or grandmother growing up is intriguing. I feel like there's yet another implied tragedy there and obviously itd tie into dragons backstory but my point is that the more Garp is championed as a carefree unwavering symbol, it feels more and more likely that such a figure was formed by not just one sad event but multiple. Theres even more stuff like defying his bosses to harbor Ace, and we dont know if/how long he protected Dragons info from WG. Garp is such a clear foil to Luffy, i cant wait too see what Oda will do with his character
Luffy's story is supposed to be bigger than rogers. The world needs to change in a drastic way; No more world government, no more marine as we know it. Luffy's the the bringer of a great change in the status quo. Roger himself said that he was too soon. If we keep forcing parallels with Roger's arc, one piece will end up with Luffy finding the one piece than dying and that's it. He will only be the second one who did, before the third one and so one. That's why he doesn't need a garp, that's why he doesn't even have to die like Roger. If at the end of the story the world is going to be that different, it's more likely that Coby and Smoker are going to have a role in that new era that's unique, that no one had before.

Luffy's similar to Roger in many ways but his personality is basically pirate Garp. Obviously, Roger didn't have the goal to become Pirate King. Luffy takes this goal based on the notion that the Pirate King Roger conquered the Grand Line and lived freely as he wished, choosing even his death. But that's it. Their stories are meant to be different as much as they're similar. For one, Luffy will succeed and if not, why even state that Roger was too early and he's waiting for someone to inherit the Will of D? (Which Luffy seems the ultimate inheritor of)
but Luffy despise the image of heroes which Garp is. and if we follow the logic put forth by the video, loose similarities are not enough to draw parallels. I'm not saying you can't think that, but Morj is...

Morj here seems pretty frustrated with the fandoms forced parallels here. I haven't seen much of this side of the fandom, but man, the little ones i do see are downright cringe. Glad the Morj here isnt one of them. Though, i do kind of disagree with the xebec / blackbeard parallel, just because we still havent seen enough of xebec himself.
Fans like putting things together like pokemon masters like collecting trophies. There's no substance. It's like people wanting any new character to be a straw hat the moment their design shows up on the page. They don't care about their long term use or character. They just want to "have" things to put into a pile.
One Piece would be really clichéd and boring if everything that happens will turn out the same as in the past. Even Roger himself said ''everybody has a ROLE to fulfill'' a unique role, not to follow in the exact same steps as their previous incarnations. Plus it also takes away the unique motivation of the current main cast, like everybody says Zoro is the next Rayleigh and ignore his own dream of becoming the world's greatest swordsman and his other character traits that make him different from Rayleigh.
Wow couldn't agree more about this! I've been attacked in forums before for saying this. It annoys me that so many people thinks there has to be these parallels and decide how powerful people are gonna be by the made up fact of 'there has to be a parellel to this'. Not saying Luffy can't have some of these parallels but let the story decide, we the readers don't need to decide. About koby though, outside of all the parallel nonesense, he's gotten very strong and could be stronger than a typical rear admiral. Can't wait to see what he looks like eos. All in all, really great video!
I was also on the Smoker = Garp train for the longest time. A lot of things seemed to fit like you described, and Smoker is 1) a character who's been with us for such a long time, you could even say he started his "journey" at the same time as Luffy in a sense, and 2) just an extremely likeable Marine even though he's totally different from Garp in personality - so a part of it is a desire to see him have a major role in the story going forward. As much as I love the Admirals, they all have more of a lofty air to them, while Smoker is the closest thing to a more personal rival/antagonist figure among the Marines. And while I don't have any attachment to it being some kind of parallel for the sake of it, I still can't deny that I remain disappointed that Luffy has seemingly just zoomed way past Smoker. It went straight from Smoker being untouchable, to it being impossible to see him as even a respectable threat. It now feels impossible that we'll ever get anything close to a hard-fought duel between them even though it seemed like a fight so long in the making, you know? Maybe I'm underestimating Smoker and he'll actually rise to an Admiral by the end of the story, which should be enough for an entertaining scrap between them, but if that was Oda's plan I think he would've prepared the stage better for it - drop us some "it's the White Hunter, the crazy Marine who went into the New World and threw himself into all the harshest battles..." lines... and not have him be so clearly inferior even to Law, who in turn was very clearly inferior to Doflamingo, who lost to Luffy and so on. I suppose the point of all this is that a reason to make these parallels, at least to some extent, can also arise from an attachment to a character and feeling like something really is building with them. Smoker's character is still fine, I really liked the way you described how the current era is different and not meant to have a Marine like that - makes me see the patterns in Oda's decision to move things in this direction better - but I still can't help but feel Smoker got the short end of the stick, to some extent.
"Being friends" is not only parallel between Law and White beard: there us also lack of will to become a pirate king. But I agree that Law is NOT Luffi's Whitebeard
Roger and White Beard also had a temporary alliance with one another just like Law and Luffy, so yes Law is similar to White Beard, but he isn’t a copy and pasted version of White Beard.
Reading the comments, it looks like power scalers come from DBZ fandom while people who wants fight after fights comes from naruto fandom. They read or watched those series first then jump to One Piece after those series ended. They salty cause what their reading now was something new and big.

Koby teamed up with Law on Rocky Port like Garp teamed up with Roger to stop Rocks, and Honesty Impact is the Worst Generation version of Galaxy Impact meaning clearly now Koby is Luffy's Garp instead of Smoker.
Whitebeard is closer to Katakuri than Law : WB never got a wound in his back, Kata never fell on his back/ WB wanted a family, Kata want to protect his family/ Katakuri and Luffy eating cover looking like Roger and WB eating.

The one thing I disagree with in this video is the idea that we pigeonholed smoker into the role of "Luffy's garp." Early on its pretty easy to see that Oda was at least giving off that vibe. Smoker corned luffy with him narrowly managing to escape like Roger, Smoker left his post for the sole purpose of chasing Luffy, both Smoker and Garp are serious but also are defenders of the people. Both have an issue with authority and want to follow their own forms of justice which are in fact true justice. We saw a mutual respect and maybe even trust between Luffy and Smoker begin to form like Garp and Roger. Smoker told Tashigi to watch the strawhats in Alabasta as he believed they were the only ones who could save the country, and Luffy earlier had saved Smoker's life. The conversation between Roger and Garp where Roger entrusted his son's life to Garp I could see very easily take place between Luffy and Smoker. Of course now it looks like Smoker may not be Luffy's garp, or more precisely Luffy won't have a Garp at all. I felt your better point was that Luffy doesn't need to have 1 to 1 parallels with Roger's story. Luffy's story takes place in a different time and different era, of course there are going to be differences. Luffy probably wont have a Whitebeard or a Garp, and thats okay. Neither Katakuri, Kid, or Law, and Coby and Smoker fit the bill for filling each of these roles, and thats totally fine. Not everything NEEDS a parallel.
Hey Morj! I just want to say that I love all your videos, I often rewatch them. One particular aspect that I love is how you constantly point out the big picture, the background themes, inspirations, and are not quick to jump into conclusions. After watching many of your videos I've found an even higher level of respect for the series and Oda. It has given me a new perspectives on many arcs, and the symbolism of it all, specifically your analysis about Wano. That being said, is there any other mangas, books, or literary works that you'd recommend? Excellent video! The One Piece world is so vast and diverse that it really makes no sense for patterns of people to be so widespread, even as we do draw parallels and see foils of characters clash all the time. The fact that Luffy is so similar to Roger isn't a point to be extrapolated across the series by the fanbase, but a logical indicator to other characters in the story that this is a man worth following. Luffy will lead them to the places Roger has before, and supporting him may lead to him reaching the heights that Roger couldn't in his day.

Roger was great, but his story ended without the major change that Luffy's story seems headed toward. By the time OP is over there might not even BE a WG left for Coby to serve, let alone time for him to grow into an antagonistic force against Luffy. Luffy is NOT Roger. He is inspired by Roger, but his adventure is all his own.
I just thought of this, though it has little to do with "Luffy having a Garp." Smoker represents Real Justice while Coby represents True Justice, and those are different Most Marines pursue a form of justice that is not true or real, but borders on Injustice Smoker represents what justice really is. He's gritty, dirty, but he goes after real criminals, and admits when real justice has been served. He's Batman as far as his justice is. Coby represents what justice is supposed to be. Coby's justice is the idealized form of justice, the Knight of Lore, what we wish justice was and what it truly should be. He's Superman with his justice. By comparison, marines like Akainu are just zealots that aren't interested in justice at all.

This. Character parallel =/= exact copy. In many instances it's just common story bits showing up for different characters. Like Coby and Luffy are friends. There is no denying it. Coby is also getting pushed hard through the ranks of the Marines. Smoker and Hina are considered fast rising stars, yet Coby surpassed their speed in 2 years. No matter how you see it...The relationship between Coby and Luffy is hugely relevant to both characters'' future. Saying he is going to be "Luffy's Garp" does not mean that it will be a copy of the Roger/Garp relationship. Just that it will repeat certain story beats. Ergo Coby is the Marine most associated with the Pirate King. It certainly does help that Coby is trained under Garp, while Luffy is under Rayleigh and that Coby is already known as a hero

People that are seen as rivals, but are actually friendly with each other. That's it. Rarely anything else is implied when people speak about Law's/Newgate's role regarding Luffy/Roger. Kid/Shiki ---> Similar thing, opposite direction. From the beginning Kid was stated to be more ruthless than Luffy and definitely more classical-pirate-y in that regard. The character of Kid doesn't seem like the guy that will ever see himself beneath the Pirate King, let alone being friendly with him. The same was the case for Shiki in Chapter 0. Again...That's it. That's all people are referencing. Nothing regarding their actualy personalities, powers or development. Coby/Smoker/Garp ---> "You chased me all over the world." - Roger about Garp "One day I will arrest you." - Coby & Smoker about Luffy Smoker was the first strong Marine officer we met in the story and after Smoker named his intentions AND resurfaced in Alabasta, while rising through the ranks of the Marine-world, just like Luffy with the pirates, people saw that this very well is the implied behavior of Garp regarding Roger. Again...That's it. Every famous Pirate will have made some Marine officer look foolish. Every famous pirate is going to have a member of the Marines dedicated to stop/capture them. Early beats in the story seemed to suggest Smoker being that for Luffy. After Smoker's rather secondary performance in Punk Hazard - ending in a dedication to the save kids - alot of people hopped off this train, as it did no longer look like Smoker being the one "chasing Luffy all over the world." That is all about it. Again...Nothing about the powers, actual story or characterization of Garp/Smoker. Then Reverie happened and Coby was put over strong. He was "just" a Captain, which was already impressive, but he had a good showing and already gained some fame, thanks to his excellent work as a Marine. Then the most recent chapters revealed that in the last few days of the Reverie Coby actually recieved another promotion, factually making him the youngest cannon and non-cannon Admiral-ranked (not "Admiral"-rank) person in One Piece. Not only that, but we learned that he is a member of a top-secret Marine sub-division. Combine that with the recent reveal of Roger & Garp teaming up against a supreme enemy and the fact that Garp sepcifically and personally trained Coby for 2.5 years and you get some more story beats that just naturally flow together. Especially considering the Blackbeard/Xebec association is there in the manga, for everyone to see. The beat that many people think will repeat itself with Coby & Garp...is the team up to defeat a formidable opponent. For the fourth time...That's it. All that happened is that the Marine rival of Luffy switched from Smoker to Coby, because that journey, in any sense of the word, is happening in direct parallel to the journey Luffy is having. That's all the parallel that people see is refering too. TL;DR: What Naruto had were repeated characters, stories and character developments. What One Piece has is repeated story beats, with different characters and different character development.

And the story beats you did mention are not parallels. Law/WB- Law's main goal is not revenge against Doffy. That is a lifelong goal of his, yes. However, he wishes to find the One Piece just as much as anyone. If you go back to Pre-TS, this is very much clear. You can have multiple goals in your life. However, the community conveniently ignored this for their forced parallel. So, Law being friendly with Luffy (a character trait) essentially warrants a parallel. This is so flimsy. Kid/Shiki- Shiki wanted Roger in his crew, he was more than ready to be friendly with him. Kid showed 0 interest in such things. Nothing similar at all. Coby/Smoker/Garp- With Smoker and Garp, Morj explained it already, there were clear parallels but with distinct personalities. So whether Oda intended them to parallel is maybe up for debate but that idea holds little weight nowadays due to the current direction of the story. As for Coby, his recent climbing of ranks+being Garp's underling is enough to see him standing shoulder to shoulder with Luffy as the Marine ally against BB. However, this only works if you're completely disregarding the story beat that the event in the past was 3 D members fighting, which is most likely a monumental event. But for the sake of the parallel, this plot point has to be ignored. All of these parallels you suggest only work when you leave out the conditions that come along with it. Good parallels flow naturally without having to be put under scrutiny.

Some other interesting differences: - Roger was a pirate for multiple years before he began his final trip around the Grand Line. Luffy’s first trip began as a teenager. - We only know that Roger and Whitebeard were rivals deep into Roger’s career. There is no confirmation that they were rivals in his early day. Luffy might just be too new to have a rival. - Roger’s crew had more people. Luffy’s crew is still a small crew of talented people. - Roger did not have four Yonko to overcome. The term Yonko originated six years ago.

That said. I could eventually see Katakuri becoming the Big Bro of his family after Big Mom's defeat. Changing the dynamic of the family and ACTUALLY creating a paradise for all races given that he HAS a motivation to do so. He was shamed for his appearance since he was a kid and his sister suffered for it. It would make sense for Katakuri's character to stay at Totland and make it the paradise it was always intended to be. And he has the maturity and the power to see that through.
That's why he asked Luffy to come back and defeat his own mother. Because he wants Totland to become all it can be but it can't with BM in power and he knows he is not strong enough to do it himself.
So. If. *IF* you want to draw parallels between the old a new eras. Katakuri is Big Mom. A better version of her that is. And even that is a sketchy parallel at best

It's actually important that Luffy has differences from Roger. Shanks' role in the story seems to be finding someone like Roger, and ensuring he doesn't make the same mistakes. Shanks grew up watching Roger charge into battle against anyone who insulted his friends, and Shanks recognized that danger. He gave his arm so that Luffy would remember the importance of avoiding unnecessary battles. An important point of Marineford was that Ace inherited his father's refusal to back down, and died because of it. Shanks even points out how badly he wants Luffy to never make that mistake as he leaves Whitebeard's grave. Luffy may carry the same will as Roger, but their differences might end up making all the difference in the end.
I think that’s shown the best in impel down when jimbe helps luffy realize he shouldn’t confront Blackbeard. Having his friends guide him to not making the same mistakes that his brother did.

We can also refer to Inuarashi's words to Nami about the first and second journey of the pirate king and the Log Pose.
Notice how the straw hats have been guided by people from Roger's crew. Of course Luffy gets the hat from Shanks but shortly after setting sail, he encounters Buggy. Then they meet Crocus, then Rayleigh, then Inuarashi and Nekomamushi. Each one of these characters have played a major role in changing the path of their journey to the One Piece.

I completely agree with you, but people like bloodlines as it creates a narrative rhythm which gives a direction where the story is going. I despise bloodlines especially as it becomes an excuse for growth not a tool to demonstrate development of the character for my biggest example is "Zoro is a descendant of Ryuma and/or from Wano" theory. People desire to force a parallel between Zoro and the Wano people so much that everyone already believe it's canon. This of course goes the same for Luffy but it's Shounen so we all kinda expected a powerful bloodline and him being a prophesied one.

People try to fit characters like Law into the role of characters from Rogers day by saying he’ll be the next Whitebeard as you say then miss what seem to be more deliberate ones like Garp/Sengoku and Luffy/Law as a “grandson” duo who have similar dynamics of personality. Like you said Luffy is a lot like Garp even if he shares Rogers view of freedom.

In Naruto, every generation has the same archetype in team 7. Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura, Obito/Kakashi/Rin, Tsunabe/Jiraiya/0rochimaru, etc...
This is the reason why People feel that in Onepiece the same archetype will repeat themselves. in a different generations.

Interestingly, Obito/Kakashi/Rin is probably the most unique one. While the Sannin and Team 7 were portrayed as carbon copies, and the women all ended up in the same role, I liked how there was depth to the Obito/kakashi/rin one. In some aspects, Naruto and Obito resembled each other, kind, wanted to be hokage, goofballs, etc while kakashi and sasuke were the cool, suave, elite, style persona, yet Naruto and Kakashi are also alike, and Sasuke and Obito are too, Naruto and adult Kakashi both became Hokage, wanted to save their friend, have some similar ideology, and Sasuke and Obito were Uchihas who were as Obito put it "fellow traitors" who went on a dark path. So while I do agree that the Team 7 archetype repeated often and contirbuted to the forced parallel mindset, Obito Kakashi Rin wasnt just a simple archetype reflection. It still is but it it followed two different parallels simultaneously with Naruto/Sasuke and Kakashi/Obito which i wish more people would acknowlege (though the argument of how successful it was is completely different).

This argument is the whole "Destiny" theme, which didn't work for Naruto in my opinion.
If Luffy was destined to find the One Piece/be Pirate King, that would hurt the story (but with the OP fandom probably not that that much).

@That boy Thats interesting because I think this introduce an interesting dynamic between Luffy and Blackbeard: Destiny vs Free Will.
Blackbeard and his crew think that everything is happening because of "fate" Blackbeard sees the world as his oyster and taking everything for himself. His path to become pirate king is not so much of having freedom to do so, is because Blackbeard sees his role as destined to be, which is why Whitebeard's remarks on Blackbeard make sense because those who have the "D" are shown to act in ways that go against the norm of the world and they end up causing havoc for others. Luffy's free spirit is what counter acts anything that has to do with destiny because the One Piece wasn't made for him to find, anybody can find it and become Pirate king. However, the fact that he's willing to strive to become this greater person on his own accord and because he wants to do it, makes him more worthy to have the Will of D and frequently makes him a better pirate than Blackbeard. at Least something like that.

I say no because it's pretty weird that Oda is just smothering us with Zoro is the "lost samurai of Wano" with out right saying it. This video makes me realise how little we know of Garp' philosophy and motives since there just isn't enough information about Garp as a character during Roger's era. For example why did he join the marines or why did he side with Roger during Battle of the God Valley. Basically we know very little on one of the most important characters of the series. On the flipside even though we just have a chapter's worth of info on Rocks we still can comfortably draw a parallel between Teach and him.
I've been saying this for some time. I lowkey feel Garp is being built up to have one the saiddest stories in One Piece. On key thing to note is that Garp is like Luffy in appearing carefree. Yet luffy never talked about his past or sad moments, like sabos death or being beating up. Just his backstory in geneal he was very quiet about. Garp is the same way i feel. He has a face of carefreeness but theres a lot of stuff connected to him. His son is public enemy no1? Thats gotta be sad for him. His grandsons became notorious outlaws? We new how much that pained him. But more interestingly, the fact that luffy didnt seem to have a mother or grandmother growing up is intriguing. I feel like there's yet another implied tragedy there and obviously itd tie into dragons backstory but my point is that the more Garp is championed as a carefree unwavering symbol, it feels more and more likely that such a figure was formed by not just one sad event but multiple. Theres even more stuff like defying his bosses to harbor Ace, and we dont know if/how long he protected Dragons info from WG. Garp is such a clear foil to Luffy, i cant wait too see what Oda will do with his character
Luffy's story is supposed to be bigger than rogers. The world needs to change in a drastic way; No more world government, no more marine as we know it. Luffy's the the bringer of a great change in the status quo. Roger himself said that he was too soon. If we keep forcing parallels with Roger's arc, one piece will end up with Luffy finding the one piece than dying and that's it. He will only be the second one who did, before the third one and so one. That's why he doesn't need a garp, that's why he doesn't even have to die like Roger. If at the end of the story the world is going to be that different, it's more likely that Coby and Smoker are going to have a role in that new era that's unique, that no one had before.

Luffy's similar to Roger in many ways but his personality is basically pirate Garp. Obviously, Roger didn't have the goal to become Pirate King. Luffy takes this goal based on the notion that the Pirate King Roger conquered the Grand Line and lived freely as he wished, choosing even his death. But that's it. Their stories are meant to be different as much as they're similar. For one, Luffy will succeed and if not, why even state that Roger was too early and he's waiting for someone to inherit the Will of D? (Which Luffy seems the ultimate inheritor of)
but Luffy despise the image of heroes which Garp is. and if we follow the logic put forth by the video, loose similarities are not enough to draw parallels.

One Piece would be really clichéd and boring if everything that happens will turn out the same as in the past. Even Roger himself said ''everybody has a ROLE to fulfill'' a unique role, not to follow in the exact same steps as their previous incarnations. Plus it also takes away the unique motivation of the current main cast, like everybody says Zoro is the next Rayleigh and ignore his own dream of becoming the world's greatest swordsman and his other character traits that make him different from Rayleigh.

Wow couldn't agree more about this! I've been attacked in forums before for saying this. It annoys me that so many people thinks there has to be these parallels and decide how powerful people are gonna be by the made up fact of 'there has to be a parellel to this'. Not saying Luffy can't have some of these parallels but let the story decide, we the readers don't need to decide. About koby though, outside of all the parallel nonesense, he's gotten very strong and could be stronger than a typical rear admiral. Can't wait to see what he looks like eos. All in all, really great video!

I was also on the Smoker = Garp train for the longest time. A lot of things seemed to fit like you described, and Smoker is 1) a character who's been with us for such a long time, you could even say he started his "journey" at the same time as Luffy in a sense, and 2) just an extremely likeable Marine even though he's totally different from Garp in personality - so a part of it is a desire to see him have a major role in the story going forward. As much as I love the Admirals, they all have more of a lofty air to them, while Smoker is the closest thing to a more personal rival/antagonist figure among the Marines.
And while I don't have any attachment to it being some kind of parallel for the sake of it, I still can't deny that I remain disappointed that Luffy has seemingly just zoomed way past Smoker. It went straight from Smoker being untouchable, to it being impossible to see him as even a respectable threat. It now feels impossible that we'll ever get anything close to a hard-fought duel between them even though it seemed like a fight so long in the making, you know? Maybe I'm underestimating Smoker and he'll actually rise to an Admiral by the end of the story, which should be enough for an entertaining scrap between them, but if that was Oda's plan I think he would've prepared the stage better for it - drop us some "it's the White Hunter, the crazy Marine who went into the New World and threw himself into all the harshest battles..." lines... and not have him be so clearly inferior even to Law, who in turn was very clearly inferior to Doflamingo, who lost to Luffy and so on.
I suppose the point of all this is that a reason to make these parallels, at least to some extent, can also arise from an attachment to a character and feeling like something really is building with them. Smoker's character is still fine, I really liked the way you described how the current era is different and not meant to have a Marine like that - makes me see the patterns in Oda's decision to move things in this direction better - but I still can't help but feel Smoker got the short end of the stick, to some extent.

Roger and White Beard also had a temporary alliance with one another just like Law and Luffy, so yes Law is similar to White Beard, but he isn’t a copy and pasted version of White Beard.
In my personal opinion, Coby is the protagonist of the show from the marine perspective.

Reading the comments, it looks like power scalers come from DBZ fandom while people who wants fight after fights comes from naruto fandom. They read or watched those series first then jump to One Piece after those series ended. They salty cause what their reading now was something new and big.

Koby teamed up with Law on Rocky Port like Garp teamed up with Roger to stop Rocks, and Honesty Impact is the Worst Generation version of Galaxy Impact meaning clearly now Koby is Luffy's Garp instead of Smoker.

The one thing I disagree with in this video is the idea that we pigeonholed smoker into the role of "Luffy's garp." Early on its pretty easy to see that Oda was at least giving off that vibe. Smoker corned luffy with him narrowly managing to escape like Roger, Smoker left his post for the sole purpose of chasing Luffy, both Smoker and Garp are serious but also are defenders of the people. Both have an issue with authority and want to follow their own forms of justice which are in fact true justice. We saw a mutual respect and maybe even trust between Luffy and Smoker begin to form like Garp and Roger. Smoker told Tashigi to watch the strawhats in Alabasta as he believed they were the only ones who could save the country, and Luffy earlier had saved Smoker's life. The conversation between Roger and Garp where Roger entrusted his son's life to Garp I could see very easily take place between Luffy and Smoker.
Of course now it looks like Smoker may not be Luffy's garp, or more precisely Luffy won't have a Garp at all. I felt your better point was that Luffy doesn't need to have 1 to 1 parallels with Roger's story. Luffy's story takes place in a different time and different era, of course there are going to be differences. Luffy probably wont have a Whitebeard or a Garp, and thats okay. Neither Katakuri, Kid, or Law, and Coby and Smoker fit the bill for filling each of these roles, and thats totally fine. Not everything NEEDS a parallel.

One particular aspect that I love is how you constantly point out the big picture, the background themes, inspirations, and are not quick to jump into conclusions. After watching many of your videos I've found an even higher level of respect for the series and Oda. It has given me a new perspectives on many arcs, and the symbolism of it all, specifically your analysis about Wano. That being said, is there any other mangas, books, or literary works that you'd recommend? The One Piece world is so vast and diverse that it really makes no sense for patterns of people to be so widespread, even as we do draw parallels and see foils of characters clash all the time.
The fact that Luffy is so similar to Roger isn't a point to be extrapolated across the series by the fanbase, but a logical indicator to other characters in the story that this is a man worth following.
Luffy will lead them to the places Roger has before, and supporting him may lead to him reaching the heights that Roger couldn't in his day.

Smoker represents Real Justice while Coby represents True Justice, and those are different
Most Marines pursue a form of justice that is not true or real, but borders on Injustice
Smoker represents what justice really is. He's gritty, dirty, but he goes after real criminals, and admits when real justice has been served. He's Batman as far as his justice is.
Coby represents what justice is supposed to be. Coby's justice is the idealized form of justice, the Knight of Lore, what we wish justice was and what it truly should be. He's Superman with his justice.
By comparison, marines like Akainu are just zealots that aren't interested in justice at all.

I think some people are just using characters as shorthand for what they mean. 'His whitebeard' kinda just means his top tier friend. Like his Garp just means marine rival
This. Character parallel =/= exact copy.
In many instances it's just common story bits showing up for different characters. Like Coby and Luffy are friends. There is no denying it. Coby is also getting pushed hard through the ranks of the Marines. Smoker and Hina are considered fast rising stars, yet Coby surpassed their speed in 2 years. No matter how you see it...The relationship between Coby and Luffy is hugely relevant to both characters'' future. Saying he is going to be "Luffy's Garp" does not mean that it will be a copy of the Roger/Garp relationship. Just that it will repeat certain story beats. Ergo Coby is the Marine most associated with the Pirate King.
It certainly does help that Coby is trained under Garp, while Luffy is under Rayleigh and that Coby is already known as a hero

The story beats that are repeated are much simpler than that and much more clean cut.
Law/WB ---> In flashbacks we got a glimp at the relationship between Roger & Newgate. Against all expectations they were rather friendly with each other. They sat down and had a talk and generally had different goals. Once Law revealed that his main goal was actually getting his revenge against Doffy for Corazon's death and the alliance between the StrawHats & Law took shape, people theorized that Law would have a similar relationship to Luffy, as Newgate had with Roger. People that are seen as rivals, but are actually friendly with each other. That's it. Rarely anything else is implied when people speak about Law's/Newgate's role regarding Luffy/Roger.
Kid/Shiki ---> Similar thing, opposite direction. From the beginning Kid was stated to be more ruthless than Luffy and definitely more classical-pirate-y in that regard. The character of Kid doesn't seem like the guy that will ever see himself beneath the Pirate King, let alone being friendly with him. The same was the case for Shiki in Chapter 0. Again...That's it. That's all people are referencing. Nothing regarding their actualy personalities, powers or development.
Coby/Smoker/Garp ---> "You chased me all over the world." - Roger about Garp
"One day I will arrest you." - Coby & Smoker about Luffy
Smoker was the first strong Marine officer we met in the story and after Smoker named his intentions AND resurfaced in Alabasta, while rising through the ranks of the Marine-world, just like Luffy with the pirates, people saw that this very well is the implied behavior of Garp regarding Roger. Again...That's it. Every famous Pirate will have made some Marine officer look foolish. Every famous pirate is going to have a member of the Marines dedicated to stop/capture them. Early beats in the story seemed to suggest Smoker being that for Luffy. After Smoker's rather secondary performance in Punk Hazard - ending in a dedication to the save kids - alot of people hopped off this train, as it did no longer look like Smoker being the one "chasing Luffy all over the world." That is all about it. Again...Nothing about the powers, actual story or characterization of Garp/Smoker.
Then Reverie happened and Coby was put over strong. He was "just" a Captain, which was already impressive, but he had a good showing and already gained some fame, thanks to his excellent work as a Marine. Then the most recent chapters revealed that in the last few days of the Reverie Coby actually recieved another promotion, factually making him the youngest cannon and non-cannon Admiral-ranked (not "Admiral"-rank) person in One Piece. Not only that, but we learned that he is a member of a top-secret Marine sub-division. Combine that with the recent reveal of Roger & Garp teaming up against a supreme enemy and the fact that Garp sepcifically and personally trained Coby for 2.5 years and you get some more story beats that just naturally flow together. Especially considering the Blackbeard/Xebec association is there in the manga, for everyone to see. The beat that many people think will repeat itself with Coby & Garp...is the team up to defeat a formidable opponent. For the fourth time...That's it. All that happened is that the Marine rival of Luffy switched from Smoker to Coby, because that journey, in any sense of the word, is happening in direct parallel to the journey Luffy is having. That's all the parallel that people see is refering too.
TL;DR: What Naruto had were repeated characters, stories and character developments. What One Piece has is repeated story beats, with different characters and different character development.

Most of what you said are not even "story beats", they're character traits. And the story beats you did mention are not parallels.
Law/WB- Law's main goal is not revenge against Doffy. That is a lifelong goal of his, yes. However, he wishes to find the One Piece just as much as anyone. If you go back to Pre-TS, this is very much clear. You can have multiple goals in your life. However, the community conveniently ignored this for their forced parallel.
So, Law being friendly with Luffy (a character trait) essentially warrants a parallel. This is so flimsy.
Kid/Shiki- Shiki wanted Roger in his crew, he was more than ready to be friendly with him. Kid showed 0 interest in such things. Nothing similar at all.
Coby/Smoker/Garp- With Smoker and Garp, Morj explained it already, there were clear parallels but with distinct personalities. So whether Oda intended them to parallel is maybe up for debate but that idea holds little weight nowadays due to the current direction of the story.
As for Coby, his recent climbing of ranks+being Garp's underling is enough to see him standing shoulder to shoulder with Luffy as the Marine ally against BB. However, this only works if you're completely disregarding the story beat that the event in the past was 3 D members fighting, which is most likely a monumental event. But for the sake of the parallel, this plot point has to be ignored.
All of these parallels you suggest only work when you leave out the conditions that come along with it. Good parallels flow naturally without having to be put under scrutiny.

Some other interesting differences:
- Roger was a pirate for multiple years before he began his final trip around the Grand Line. Luffy’s first trip began as a teenager.
- We only know that Roger and Whitebeard were rivals deep into Roger’s career. There is no confirmation that they were rivals in his early day. Luffy might just be too new to have a rival.
- Roger’s crew had more people. Luffy’s crew is still a small crew of talented people.
- Roger did not have four Yonko to overcome. The term Yonko originated six years ago.

Your videos are so so good, I know a lot of people say this but people praise anything. Your videos are genuinely god tier. Best part was when you pointed out Luffy is Garps parallel
