In the early 90s in Korea a lot of troubled and sad teens were running away from home and this was a song dedicated to them telling them to come back if I’m remembering correctly!
I heard that many of these runaways did return home, not sure of the numbers though. Taiji indeed did make a social impact in that way, & now he has hundreds of children, in the form of KPop bands, in these past nearly 30 years now, that would have otherwise not existed if it wasnt for him as the inspiration, style & template for this industry to unfold. And also possibly the things that Lee Sooman also contributed to KPop, who would become the business model side of it. Of course, all of this would not have happened in every way without the United States of which all of this came from, especially when Korea had been adopting US/western music for the past 150+ years. 10/07/24
While the other two groups you checked out today are true early idol groups, these guys were pre-kpop, they were one of the major blueprints for the style, sound and dancing that the big companies then combined with the idol training system to create what we now recognise as modern kpop. This is why they are often called the fathers of kpop, because they were one of the major sparks of cultural shift that allowed kpop to take off in Korea! They are seen as a cultural treasure
look at young YG go...hahaha the contribution he made in kpop music is immense...from being an artists himself...choreographer...producer...and executive...he gave us some of the iconic groups in kpop history.
Do you guys know that one of them was YG 😅 , There are three members, Seo Taiji is the leader , a vocalist and song writer ,YG was the backing Vocalist, Dancer/ choreographer, Main Rapper , Lee Juno who is the third member is the backing vocalist and Dancer / choreographer.
Seo Taiji and Boys are a three-member group that debuted in 1992. Leader Seo Tae-ji is a man wearing sunglasses at 5:24. The second member is Lee Juno at 08:03. The third member, Yang Hyun-suk, is the executive producer of YG Entertainment as of 5:59. At that time, his nickname was Yanggun, so he was called YG, and his agency was YG Entertainment. Lee Ju-no and Yang Hyun-suk acted as famous dancers at the time. The group that Seo created with them is Seo Taiji and the BOYs. It's a group that can be said to be the beginning of K-pop.
Fun fact: there was a collaboration between Seo Taiji and BTS - for Seo Taijis anniversary - where they performed multiple songs together at a concert. Not sure how many songs they did but this is definitely one of them as well as "Classroom Idea". It's worth checking out just because it's so cool to see two legendary artists performing together and very obviously enjoying it a lot.
Can't really understand K-pop without Seo Taiji's catalog. He really played in every genre, most notably the hip-hop era with Yang Hyun-suk [that YG] and Lee Juno. Story is that they performed Nan Arayo on an MBC music show (1992) and received the worst ranking in the show's history. Next day, every music store in Korea sold out of Seo Taiji and the Boys material. A couple of other tracks worth looking at for an intro are 서태지와 아이들(Seotaiji and Boys) - 필승(Must Triumph) and a live version of Regret of the Times, which has been covered by several groups over the years. (Dreamcatcher has a short choreography cover on the Happyface channel)
Seo Taiji is considered the Original Kpop Idol, he is known as the President of Culture. Although not technically kpop (it wasn't a 'thing' then), him bringing hiphop elements to Korea (music, dance, fashion and freedom of self-expression) paved the way for the things we are used to in kpop today. Hes a true legend. This song has also got some incredible covers obviously
joan jett and the blackhearts Seo Taiji [it's Tay] and the Boys: The boys in question are Juno and Yang Hyunsuk, the founder of YG Entertainment. Yes, TREASURE leader, Hyunsuk, shares the same name as his big boss. The older group initially named themselves Taiji Boys but a senior staff translated it to Korean as "Seo Taiji and the Boys". Juno and Hyunsuk were the top dance battlers at a club called Moon Night, frequented by soldiers from the nearby U.S. base. It was the go-to place for hip-hop and soul music. Seo Taiji was already fairly well-known in the scene as the bassist of metal band, Sinawe. He hung out at the club and wanted to learn dancing from Hyunsuk, but the latter had to go to the army. Eventually, the group was formed and sparked a cultural revolution. Old Hyunsuk much later said Taiji who handled all the music was constantly stressed out, expectedly. The group disbanded after their 4th album. Yang Hyunsuk started his own label with/for the dancers and crew that had worked with them. The 3 of them don't hate each other, like some people like to claim. They just lead different lives now. Taiji said he's proud to see Hyunsuk's label doing well. Hyunsuk said Taiji likes to play "videogames" and he doesn't so they don't hang out. Hyunsuk showed up at Juno's wedding. Many people, like Teddy, auditioned for YG because they were fans of Seo Taiji and the Boys. See "1TYM Danny interview on Fun With Dumb. Fun fact. almost all YG albums are sound engineered by one Jason Roberts who worked on productions for Seo Taiji & Cypress Hill.
Seo Taiji is pronounced kinda like so-teh-jee, and he and the boys truly were the progenitors of kpop, building the foundations for what we know it as today (also, as others have mentioned, YG was in this - the second person to start rapping in the video)
YG founder and the biggest share holder of YG entertainment was in this group. That was where it all started for YG himself. Look at him here and him now in baby monster last evaluation lol
The Korean lyrics in all of Seotaiji's songs are really meaningful. Please also check out his solo albums-his vocal style can be little bit polarizing, but the sound design is incredible. Songs like 'Ultramania' and 'Tik Tak' are great examples.
3:20 the nickname Ten is actually thai should be pronounced differently but he said that since he went to an international school teachers and students called him ten and pronounced it as the number so he just went with it !!
You may be curious to know that Seo Taiji also composed a live metal version of this song, as well as an EDM-style version, by the 2000s, with his own new rock band by the late 1990s, after disbanding this `Boys` band a few years earlier. Note that the `Boys` band was not just only a singing & dancing platform, they also performed as a rock band playing instruments, with the 3 of them, during this time from 1992 to 1996 & then disbanded after. That is because Seo Taiji was first & foremost a rock & metal musician, having already started in the mid 1980s. That is the big irony of the KPop industry, it turned into a more pop, hiphop & R&B sound, yet its inadvertent founder, Taiji, was a metal musician. But in a double irony, it was also due to Taiji why KPop sounded more poppy. And Seo Taiji & Boys was not just hiphop, they were hiphop-rock, because that was a burgeoning genre by the late 1980s & all of the 1990s, so it was a new-ish style he was curious to do. But one of the most profound things that Seo Taiji did during this time was to become a dissident voice, having put social commentary in his lyrics for all of Korea to listen to & this actually got him censored at times, but eventually it was because of him that S.Korea was able to remove/reduce pre-censorship in future modern Korean music to come. He is now in his 50s & still somewhat active musically. His last big concert was in 2017 with the huge worldwide band, BTS. The Covid pandemic disrupted any future Taiji concert schedules. He even got Covid himself by 2022 but survived it. And finally one more important thing ... Seo Taiji & Boys was not classified as a KPop group, not even first generation. They inspired the KPop industry to come. They are the `fathers` of KPop, not its children. 10/07/24
Yang Hyun-suk, one of the group members, created the current YG Entertainment. And the girl group '2NE1' under YG Entertainment paid homage by releasing 'Comeback Home' with the same title. 2NE1's 'Comeback Home' is also a famous song.
Hey! I would love to see you guys react to the weverse con cover TXT did of this song. They were the only ones I have seen that gave justice to the original.
seo taiji and boy one 1st kpop group ever debut with 1st gen in 1992 modern music include rap, metal in music very hip hop group similiar to bigbang hip hop and one member yang hyun suk yg founder and biggest shareholder and former ceo of yg entertainment.
Can you guys put P1harmomy’s new album on your list? They came out with a new song called, ‘Sad Song’. They just got like 3 wins from these promotions alone!! Totally a new chapter for P1harmony💜💜

it's crazy to imagine that YG is in this video

Oh, and that SeoTaiji25 Time:Traveler is a 25th Anniversary Concert where BTS are the Backup Dancers and Vocalists.
G-Dragon also has kind of that high nasally rap voice, though less extreme.

The lyrics are young person struggle type of song. What will I make of myself, where are I going, what will I be when I come back home type of vibe

It would be nice if u react to the history of kpop in 20 min... it is a very well informative video that goes over the basics in a clear way...
That was kinda funny. I totally appreciate what it represents (god, it explains everything YG and gdragon) but now it's kinda funny. Love it.
