SHINee are definitely the poster group for coming back after their enlistment even stronger than before, even breaking new personal records! A deep dive on them someday would be fun 💎💎💎💎💎
SHINee has prospered after military. Their group and individuals solos in the last two years have reached higher levels than before. I expect that BTS will be just as successful post military as before
I think the difference is that BTS has (uncommonly) chosen to do their military service together and prepared solo content etc ahead of time. They will definitely be 7 as soon as they are all back and I think it might change the way groups typically do their military service going forward
I'd like to point out that other groups also went in as a group and set up a plan for their fans/members prior to BTS' enlistment, and it definitely showed promise as a revolutionary way to do their service. ONF was the first group to do their service together in 2021 and all enlisted within the span of a few weeks, leaving their Japanese member to promote ONF on various shows and work on his own skills. While they didn't go as far as to try to push out music during their service, their group service allowed them to come back as a group and they quickly were able to push out a comeback that got them their first win since debut. Seeing the success of ONF in 2023 despite no music promotions and BTS next year, I'm sure more will indeed follow.
@@OfficialAwkbe yup, ONF definitely pioneers of this method! A.C.E also did it this way, their maknae had some obligations so he had to go a few weeks after everyone else but they all discharged pretty close together. It was awesome to have them back so soon.
@laurainathunderstorm after that BTOB did the same. There's a 5-year gap between the oldest and the maknae but the latter chose to enlist ahead of time so the group's hiatus time was shortened.
Not to be too negative but EXO is at a disadvantage now more than ever because of their own company. Even before the members started enlisting, the company itself has limited EXO promotions within asia, while other bigger groups now have even western labels. It's difficult to "compete" when even your own company restricts you. And currently, half of the members are under their own label for solo work which could affect group activities due to scheduling and what not's. So i don't think EXO is even thinking about competition now. They just want to continue performing as a group for EXOLs and honestly, that is enough for me. I don't care about charts anymore. They have been there, done that. Maybe not at the scale some groups are currently achieving but their many Firsts in the industry speak of their impact. I just hope no one forgets ☹
I've seen social media posts where people are already labeling EXO a "legacy group" - despite them being super active right now. It's weird. But they're still getting new fans. So their impact is safe, I believe. And about what you said of competition, I love how they tell us not to buy multiples of their albums and to buy nice clothes and good food instead. It just made me stan them harder..
I like what you said and can't agree more...EXO is not for competition. They were, they are and will always be for music and our Kings will keep delivering and serving us and we will keep appreciating and love them for that forever💙✨️
Definitely agree. Even Chen at their final award appearance said there's no competition in music and I completely agree. I think competition is silly especially in music as a fan. It's all there for anyone to enjoy and we can pick and choose as we want. They're all talented and all making their own paths. I really hate it feels like such a competition and popularity contest in kpop now and of a group doesn't get this many streams or this many sales then they're a "flop" despite how great the quality is. The music industry is such a fickle business. What's popular today, won't be tomorrow so what matters is the quality of music that'll be left behind 10, 20, 30 years from now. What was number one on which chart isn't going to matter to generations ahead of us. I just don't care about chart success anymore. I want a no skip album lol
About rivalries, having gone through the 2017 award ceremonies, I get those reasons why the EXO/BTS rivalry got so heated. Having had those award groups since then apologise for not treating EXO fairly kinda vindicates a lot of the feeling of the time. Personally, I have nothing but respect for the hard work and talent BTS have demonstrated, even though I've only got two of their songs on any of my playlists and usually skip them. They are not my style, but I still appreciate all they have done for Kpop. I hope both EXO and BTS come back with a vengeance as they both have so much to offer and inspire so many to explore Kpop further. Kpop is more than these two groups, more than Black Pink or Big Bang, there are so many brilliant artists to find. I'll get off my high horse now, probably land in poop and limp of back to my own world.
As an Army who vibes to some of Exo's music, I'm kinda looking forward to a day when both groups can perform on the same stage again. It will be such a great day🤞
Day6 are post-military, and still going just as strong as before, as beloved by the public as well. Sure they're a band, but still an idol band, and I'd say they're a good example of it happening
28:55 I think with this discussion we have to keep in mind that after going to the military where you're forced to have routine and then getting out and being able to dictate your own life while the other members serve, it would be hard to go back to the crazy intense unhealthy schedule of an idol with constant comebacks, tours, promotions, reality shows, livestreams, variety shows etc. So I don't mind that groups release music a bit less often but with a better sense of their own artistry.
The fact that this video was made on the cusp between 3rd and 4th gen and now we're already moving into 5th gen shows just how much kpop has grown since and that a whole era has not been covered by this video. I would also say that in terms of staying power after military you can't deny that suju's power to be where they are, still making comebacks, as they now celebrate their 19th anniversary. They may not be as popular as they once were but considering they were stuck in the military cycle throughout the 2010s and are still very much around and relevant both throughout and after they all finished.
Such an interesting question about post enlistment popularity - the only one I can think that has sustained a similar level would be SHINee. There are loads of group that are still together and active (Super Junior, BTOB, 2PM, 2AM to name a few) but arguably not to the same level as when they were in their prime. It also ties in with contracts expiring around the time they enlist as well and with members operating under different labels its a bit harder to get together. On a different note would love to see you guys dive into g.o.d - probably one of the few 1st gen groups that are still actively together - they've got an amazing back catalogue!
To me its definitely SHINee...all are back n they do hv solo stuff n they still win music shows as a group n as soloist as well!!! This year alone i hd d opportunity of going to a SHINee concert a Onew solo fanmeet n Taemin solo concert...these stars are still shining despite being a 12 year old band!!!💎👍
BTS is on another level and their Army fans are loyal and has even increased despite going to military because of their successful solo stuff. It's hard to go back from military and be on top because there's always a new group that takes your place in your company or in kpop in general. But in BTS, they have made efforts to make their fans loyal with continued content all mapped out until 2025. And their records and popularity have not been surpassed by any group so far. Some strayed but most stayed loyal to BTS... because some/most Army are BTS fans and not kpop fans so they tend not to leave BTS for the next new shiny group.
27:02 there's plenty! SHINee are doing amazing (although they were always very popular) and smaller groups sometimes get a boost from having a comeback in places like kcon or music bank, sometimes a member goes into a survival show while waiting for everyone to return and gains a fanbase that is willing to wait. A.C.E and ONF have gotten more popular since they came back from their service and I feel like KARD also got a boost after J.Seph rejoined activities
Unlike what the video suggests, many kpop fans divide the line between 3rd and 4th gen at 2017. Groups like Stray Kids, Ateez, and TXT are all firmly identified as leaders of the 4th generation! (also as others mentioned, SVT and NCT are both firmly identified as 3rd gen groups) Personally, I like to use the concept of "half" generations for the years where it gets blurred. For me, groups that debuted in 2017 feel like 3.5 gen since it's kinda hazy whether they should be considered as 3rd or 4th gen. The same thing with groups that debuted in 2022 (like New Jeans), which has kind of felt like the transition year from 4th to 5th gen of kpop and have many people divided as to how these groups should be identified (2022 would be 4.5 gen to me). But again, it is all up to everyone's own perspectives and opinions as to how they view the generations and compartmentalize them in their own ways!
i think even in korea bts's copetitors are like IU or lim woong young who are not even considered kpop and about post military 2 of them are already home and the rest is all out in july 2025 their plan is so genuis and going pretty well some of them were so selfless to go early considering their global success as soloists .
EXOL reassurance of sorts but also a reality check: EXO will always be EXO and they WILL COME BACK. However... There's no way of knowing when exactly that'll be and with what lineup (at least when talking about an official comeback under sm). The lawsuits between CBX and SM are messy to say the least and there are no updates on that so we can only hope and pray they come to a beneficial agreement for all parties. Won't get into that deeper, we'll have to wait and see. (CBX is right to stand up for themselves and their rights as artists!! Period) Back to the reassurance! At this moment only one thing is certain: EXO are forever EXO as they have always promised us. Again, they will come back, we'll just have to wait for them. PS. NEVER trust anything anyone (including SM) says about them, ONLY trust what the members say. ALWAYS TRUST EXO and we will be fine
This took me back! I remember going off Kpop in 2012 because whenever I mentioned liking Kpop, all anyone said was "Oh Gangnam Style!" and I hated that song with a passion. EXO brought me back. "Now it's "Oh BTS!"
The 2nd Generation went from 2003 to 2011, the 3rd went through 2012 to 2017. That being said Epik High, TVXQ!, TRAXX, SUPER JUNIOR, SeeYa, Brown Eyed Girls, Wonder Girls, KARA, Girls' Generation, SHINee, 2PM, After School, B2ST, 4Minute, T-ARA, CNBLUE, f(x), MBLAQ, Rainbow, SISTAR, INFINITE, miss A, Apink, and Trouble Maker are apart of the 2nd Generation.
The K-pop history videos are always interesting, I liked this for a new take on the Throwback Thursday segment. You should consider doing more in the future please. As for the GOT7 confusion... GOT7 consists of 3 foreigners and 4 Koreans, 2 of which have recently completed their enlistment. The other 2 are probably enlisting next year after the GOT7 comeback. And yes, Jackson is still part of GOT7 💜💙🧡
Just to clarify, Seventeen are never considered a borderline 3rd gen/4th gen group in the way you mentioned them at the end of the video alongside Stray Kids and TXT. They're firmly a 3rd gen group as they debuted in 2015, the same year as Twice and before groups like Black Pink and NCT who are also firmly 3rd gen.
Depends on the company like NCT has taken the place of EXO in SM, and now NCT is going to the military there is RIize. And now EXO is like BlackPink whose members have left agency for solo activites but will still return as a group.
Many today believe that S.E.S. were the 1st girl group in K-pop, however Settorae debuted in April of 1988, while BABY V.O.X debuted in April of 1997, Diva debuted the following month, then S.E.S. four months later.

What I can say is that kpop will keep changing no matter what. I hated how the music was becoming so Americanized and not how kpop used to be like. However I found that actually many kpop idols are more talented than ever and I found that while music is becoming more western it’s just to show how big kpop has become. Now I must say kpop scene is definitely going to be more new than ever because I have become the biggest fan of Plave. Ive never felt like this ever since exo. It’s weird to say this but it’s new but at the same time it reminds me of the kpop I loved being in. Also crazy to think how big bts has become now because I remember how unique they were when I discovered them in 2014. I don’t listen to them much now because most of them are in military 😢.
@ yep I am so glad I discovered them literally when they debuted! I watched their music show and I was curious because their vocals were actually so good and lead me through their channel where they did live streams!! I was like what??? Ever since then I have become their biggest fan even with exo I never had lightstick but I have two light sticks from plave it’s so crazy how much I love them 😍
@@JudiChewie Yeah but 2nd generation K-pop was more like the West's late 90's early 2000s sound which was more of a "cheesy" pop sound. I remember watching 2nd gen reaction videos (2010 -2015) from westerners and comments were often, "why is it so colourful", "It looks very Disney". Then afterwards K-pop went through a sexy stage and then became more "cool" by westerner standards.
@@Eiko286 I disagree, I wasn't really a fan of 2nd gen K-pop but their music has been always influenced by American market, let's remember what were the music sounds dominating each year and you have plenty of groups fitting in them, even if K-Pop was or is more experimental (few include traditional elements on it), is very westernized and companies act like hungry money companies since the beginning (like every industry). I literally didn't like K-pop because of the factured feeling that I got, but 3rd Gen, let's be honest, change everything. BTS change many things to K-pop, they didn't westernized, they made K-Pop be or have a spot in the map and now it is the genre with more listeners in the world.
Seo Taiji and Boys debuted in 1992 and their debut song was "I Know" and it was a huge hit. And among the members, there is a person named Yang Hyun Suk who is now the president of YG
I just want to say that this video is biased-made and missed out a lot of things from the Hallyu Wave, the real pioneers of K-pop into the world, the ones who truly PAVED the way.
Got7 is coming back before youngjae and yugyeom leave to the military. Gotta LOVE jinyoung for turning up the spoilers to max volume not two minutes after leaving military grounds 🙂↕️💚💚💚 Also no worries about bts not making a successful return 😘💜 chapter 2 has been lovely with all the solo work and experimenting in style. Now they all miss being a group so in 7 months we'll have them back~
I don't know if you realize this but TH-cam is not populated with Documentarians. TH-cam is random people producing videos that sometimes contain facts but mostly are opinions from people with a camera and a computer. This is my sarcastic way of saying take every "Fact/History" video with a giant mountain of salt.
unfortunately, some bitter people have found this video. i came to the comment section expecting to find praise for everyone's faves but of course, k-pop fans can never take a day off. enjoyed your reaction tho. also kinda disappointed that there was no mention in the videos about k-pop history on where their inspiration came from initially. k-pop is ultimately music made by black people repackaged (and lowkey appropriated especially in the earlier years).
Here are the characteristics of 4th-gen groups, I think - Debuted at a very young age - Girl crush/very fierce concept - Half-white, half-Korean member - 90% of the lyrics are in English - Relatively good at English - Relatively bad at singing (back then, MR/AR tech wasn't good, and they had to sing live everywhere until Gen 3)
I like some of bts' songs and they're talented. But they're like copycats of Exo. (No fw for this, it's an opinion) If you look at Bts from past to present, you can see this clearly. So Bts can be more popular now but Exo will always be legendary. and is the greatest of all time ❤ Thanks for the reaction!!
It’s your opinion and allowed I can understand why you say that. For me you can clearly see things alike and things that are different between EXO and BTS. But then isn’t that all of kpop now you are learning and experimenting from other groups so there is a lot of similarities now but there’s nothing wrong with that ofc!

It’s weird to say this but it’s new but at the same time it reminds me of the kpop I loved being in. Also crazy to think how big bts has become now because I remember how unique they were when I discovered them in 2014. I don’t listen to them much now because most of them are in military 😢.
I love Plave! They definitely represent a new era of kpop
@ yep I am so glad I discovered them literally when they debuted! I watched their music show and I was curious because their vocals were actually so good and lead me through their channel where they did live streams!! I was like what??? Ever since then I have become their biggest fan even with exo I never had lightstick but I have two light sticks from plave it’s so crazy how much I love them 😍
But kpop has always been seeped in western music. Always. Even Lee Sooman admitted that much
@@JudiChewie Yeah but 2nd generation K-pop was more like the West's late 90's early 2000s sound which was more of a "cheesy" pop sound.
I hope u guys react to audition tv program like Produce101/Street woman figther or Sixteen. It's really fun to watch i swear
you should react to this channel's Most Influential KPOP Artist in History video as well. Can get a more in depth in Seo Taiji's career
If you want to check out how Kpop music changed check out "KPOP's Top 10 Most Viewed Music Videos Each Year (2009 to 2023)".
All time greats for me are TVXQ , B.A.P, and now Monsta X
Seo Taiji and Boys debuted in 1992 and their debut song was "I Know" and it was a huge hit. And among the members, there is a person named Yang Hyun Suk who is now the president of YG
ehhhhh?!? Those last three letters really brought a twist to the story that I wasn't expecting 😂
@katy8605 OMG sorry I wrote it wrong 😅
@@조영민-x7s Noooo you should keep it like that! It made me laugh and cheered me up.
I just want to say that this video is biased-made and missed out a lot of things from the Hallyu Wave, the real pioneers of K-pop into the world, the ones who truly PAVED the way.
Ah, I see. Is there an alternative video you would recommend? We'd absolutely love to get a full history!

I think now Seventeen has surpassed EXO in album sales for all time
Got7 is coming back before youngjae and yugyeom leave to the military. Gotta LOVE jinyoung for turning up the spoilers to max volume not two minutes after leaving military grounds 🙂↕️💚💚💚
Also no worries about bts not making a successful return 😘💜 chapter 2 has been lovely with all the solo work and experimenting in style. Now they all miss being a group so in 7 months we'll have them back~
12:17 🤣🤣🤣
bigbang🎉🎉🎉🎉
Exo❤
I don't know if you realize this but TH-cam is not populated with Documentarians. TH-cam is random people producing videos that sometimes contain facts but mostly are opinions from people with a camera and a computer.
This is my sarcastic way of saying take every "Fact/History" video with a giant mountain of salt.
Thank you... I'm hoping that our sarcastic tone when we said 'documentary' came across as well :-)
클론이 빠져 있다니. ㅠㅠ
The Rose is all done with military
unfortunately, some bitter people have found this video. i came to the comment section expecting to find praise for everyone's faves but of course, k-pop fans can never take a day off. enjoyed your reaction tho. also kinda disappointed that there was no mention in the videos about k-pop history on where their inspiration came from initially. k-pop is ultimately music made by black people repackaged (and lowkey appropriated especially in the earlier years).
Im second 😊😅
Ateez new album golden hour pt 2 is out i was wondering if you can react to it.
I also would appreciate it 🙏🫰
5:51 isn’t this ji Seok Jin wowwww if it is
It looks like a picture of him I've seen before, but the Korean name underneath says Shin Seunghoon, I think.
@ ohhh it does right enough! Didn’t even think about reading that but even the voice sounded similar 😂
Can you guys please react to bts?
I'm first wooooooo
Here are the characteristics of 4th-gen groups, I think
- Debuted at a very young age
- Girl crush/very fierce concept
- Half-white, half-Korean member
- 90% of the lyrics are in English
- Relatively good at English
- Relatively bad at singing (back then, MR/AR tech wasn't good, and they had to sing live everywhere until Gen 3)
+ Korean-American/Australian member
+ Many of them are from middle clsss/rich famjmy
I like some of bts' songs and they're talented. But they're like copycats of Exo. (No fw for this, it's an opinion) If you look at Bts from past to present, you can see this clearly. So Bts can be more popular now but Exo will always be legendary. and is the greatest of all time ❤ Thanks for the reaction!!
Wtf are you talking about
Honey i love to educate you
@@JaneAusten-cr8lw "it's an opinion and no fw" so wtf are you talking abt? okay now go educate yourself
It’s your opinion and allowed I can understand why you say that. For me you can clearly see things alike and things that are different between EXO and BTS. But then isn’t that all of kpop now you are learning and experimenting from other groups so there is a lot of similarities now but there’s nothing wrong with that ofc!
Soo true actually BTS copied so many things from EXO
