My experience of these fish, and I've heard others say the same is that when they are young and small they are voracious algae eaters but as they grow and get older they aren't so keen. They will eat almost anything but not so keen on algae if they have any other option available. If you have them in a species only tank you can force them to eat algae by denying them any choice but in a community tank where you have to feed the other fish they will eat the fish food rather than the algae.
I don’t really that problem if you have Reticulated Siamese Algae Eaters. I have two that I purchased when they were little, and are quite big now (not full size yet). They still keep my plants clean of algae along with my Panda Garras, as well as eat anything I feed the tank in general.
I have mine since they were young and they’ve been full grown for a few years now and they eat my fish food too but I see them grazing around the tank and I don’t have any hair algae that I see.
cool fish, I have some in my tanks. They are solid and do a great job cleaning up hair and bba. As they get larger they are not a voracious at eating it but the will still control it. The larger ones can get a little assertive but not nearly as aggressive as the Chinese algae eater. I keep one in tanks under 55 gallon with a clown pleco and some nerite snails, makes a great algae crew. Good info here.
I have 2 aswell, bought a few days ago and still quite small. I notice one keeps chasing the other again and again and again. Did yours do that aswell? It makes me wonder if I should have only bought one or maybe 3+
I’m obsessed with these fish! Including Flying Fox, Reticulated Flying Fox and even Siamese Algae Eaters have so many little subspecies so each one act different based off it. My video being off call Fish Tank Guides talk about these fish. I need to get back into that again.
I have two Reticulated SAEs in my 55 gallon for several months now, and they are almost just as active as they were when they little (not quite full size, but maybe 4 or 5 inches). I never seen any aggression between them or the other inhabitants (They live with a Pearl Gourami and a Angelfish along with Rainbowfish, Harlequins, Panda Garras, Cherry Tetras, Bolivian Rams, Apistogramma MacMasteri, Amano Shrimp, and Thorny Horned Nerite Snails). If anything, more times than not, I see them playing with the Panda Garras or resting on my Red Tiger Lotus/Anubias leaves. They eat anything and everything I feed my tank as a whole, but they don’t hog the food to themselves, and are still proficient at keeping algae off my plants. Both of them are just vacuums, and seemingly bulletproof hardy fish (health-wise). When I first introduced them into the tank, they ate algae off my plants that I didn’t know was algae (hair algae off of the long roots of my Java Fern), and gulped the little traces of BBA like it was cotton- candy. Finally, they are such a joyful and hard-working fish that I can’t see myself without them.
I have a Siamese algae eater and I absolutely adore it. I'm still not sure if it's male or female as it's only a year old so I don't think it's fully grown. Getting big now tho! Lives with a male group of mollies , mixed group of minnows, tiger barbs and on male swordtail( this swordtail is an evil monster as he murdered both of his first females and then the second ones I got hoping 3 would be better but no. He gets on great with all the other fish. Just hates women I guess lol). My algae eater is called the submarine for obvious reasons 😉 I really hope to have him for a long time and eventually move my fish community to a larger aquarium. They have a great 40 gal so no issue Just feel they deserve a lil more 10/10 fish with the cutest whiskers Also enjoyed the video!
i have 3 small ones in my 40 breeder, and 2 in my 110 tub in the basement. i love these fish and thy keep my plants clean. and they rotate my sand on the bottom for me :D
I've had Siamese Algae Eaters and they are the best - especially beard algae - they are the few I know that will eat it. The only problem with them is when they get older. After a few years, they tend to reduce their algae eating, scavenge more and they will start to suck slime coat off your other fish. The last thing is what I get most concerned about. Also, if any aggressiveness shows itself, it will be in their later years - your comment about the aggressiveness is spot on. Other than that, they can be an excellent solution to some otherwise impossible algae problems to solve. As far as eating string algae, I had platys that loved it. I would like to get your comments on that.
There are 4 species that look incredibly similar, I recommend taking some diagrams with you before purchase to make sure you dont end up with some of the others which can be really aggressive. You can tell via the fin opacity and the black line extending into the tail. I have 6 in my 100G tank, chock full of plants.. probably 6 is too many in hindsight now they are bigger, but its nice having fish that are there for more than just looking pretty... note that they will be right there at meal time, algae is more of a between meal snack!
I have two that are best friends forever. They came in the bag with Roseline Sharks so they love pretending to be them. I would think Roselines are good friends overall.
The SAE is a great fish, I just wish they stayed a little smaller as adults. I had two for years then one passed, now the one left behind just lays around missing it partner.
These are cool fish, but ive had issues with them and catfish, as theyll eat catfish dorsal fins. Its happened to both my cory cats and (surprisingly) my 6" pictus cat. They started doing this once they got to 2-3"
Oh bummer, I have a 29 gallon community tank and a 10 gallon aquarium with guppies. I have black beard algae in both. Is there anything else that I could use that would eat up this black hair algae? I was excited when I found out about the flag fish unfortunately they don't like anything else around them with bright patterns.
Hey Jason, I’m planning on getting my first ever fish tank and I was planning to get a 40 gallon breeder. Would you recommend that I get a HOB and a sponge filter or do I just need one of those.
All good when U got the algae for them to eat but what happens after they clean everything, they become competitive with the rest of the fish and eat your plants when hungry they become a menace
If they are full grown I think it could work. You couldn’t put a small 2 in one in a tank with full grown CA SA cichlids. I have one in my 55 gal with a EBA and Firemouth and a AC heckali. But they are not full grown yet. If you watch Ben ocharts channel he has a 90 gal CA SA tank and he has a Siamese Algae Eater in the tank and it is fine. But it’s a 6 in fish or so full grown.
North Fin fish food is all good when you can get it for wholesale but I’ve checked the prices of that brand and it’s one of the most expensive fish foods on the market I’m not payin’ that
I have Amano Shrimp with my Reticulated SAEs (quite big, but not 6 inch full grown yet), and they ignore them. They are more interested in scavenging for food or resting on my plants.
GREAT fish, have 4 in a 90G-heavily-planted, community w/ neocaridina, nerites, & pond snails. ZERO algae in this tank. BUT…they sucked the slime-coat off my goldfish, causing the death of two. I think you are talking about the chinese.
I have two Siamese algae eater and both tank are mostly algae free.
Keep in mind I feed my fish well.
I don’t really that problem if you have Reticulated Siamese Algae Eaters. I have two that I purchased when they were little, and are quite big now (not full size yet). They still keep my plants clean of algae along with my Panda Garras, as well as eat anything I feed the tank in general.
They seemed to keep up with algae as they got older for me as well.
Once they find that fish food tastes better and is easier, they definitely stop eating algae.

A key point with the SAE is that like some other algae eaters, they become less interested in alege as they grow older.

Also enjoyed the video!
i love mine. i like that it has a very natural look. its my only fish atm.
i have 3 small ones in my 40 breeder, and 2 in my 110 tub in the basement. i love these fish and thy keep my plants clean. and they rotate my sand on the bottom for me :D
Yes they slack off eating algae when they mature but I love their derpyness.

Ya, a lot of them will pick at algae!
I’ve got six in my tank I love them . One of mine is 12 years old still going strong👍

Great video and information 😊
The SAE is a great fish, I just wish they stayed a little smaller as adults. I had two for years then one passed, now the one left behind just lays around missing it partner.
Me too!
LFS hasn't been able to get any of these guys in for months! I had no idea they would/could ever suddenly become harder to acquire
That’s weird because they are readily available.
These are cool fish, but ive had issues with them and catfish, as theyll eat catfish dorsal fins. Its happened to both my cory cats and (surprisingly) my 6" pictus cat.
They started doing this once they got to 2-3"
Appreciate you sharing that.
Mine chase around my Barbs, Congo Tetras and Danios in a 75 gallon. They also chase eachother. But only during feeding and 10 minutes after that…
Oh bummer, I have a 29 gallon community tank and a 10 gallon aquarium with guppies. I have black beard algae in both. Is there anything else that I could use that would eat up this black hair algae? Have you ever kept senegal bichers before? I would love to see a solid care guild if you have.
Just once a long time ago.
Hey Jason, I’m planning on getting my first ever fish tank and I was planning to get a 40 gallon breeder. Would you recommend that I get a HOB and a sponge filter or do I just need one of those.
Awesome! I would do a hang on back!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics do you think a tidal 55 is perfect for the 40 gallon breeder or should I go up and get a tidal 75 (will this be overkill?)
Finally
All good when U got the algae for them to eat but what happens after they clean everything, they become competitive with the rest of the fish and eat your plants when hungry they become a menace
Would they do good in a ca/sa tank ?

Sure
North Fin fish food is all good when you can get it for wholesale but I’ve checked the prices of that brand and it’s one of the most expensive fish foods on the market I’m not payin’ that
It’s also top tier in terms of its ingredients though.
Will they eat shrimp?
Possibly when full grown?
If it fits in it's mouth. Yes. If not. No
I have Amano Shrimp with my Reticulated SAEs (quite big, but not 6 inch full grown yet), and they ignore them. They are more interested in scavenging for food or resting on my plants.
These fish loooove to jump out of the tank
GREAT fish, have 4 in a 90G-heavily-planted, community w/ neocaridina, nerites, & pond snails. ZERO algae in this tank.
BUT…they sucked the slime-coat off my goldfish, causing the death of two. No one for the SAE’s to harass now, but one of the foursome is always chased off by another.
Make sure to get a lid on your tank, these guys will chase each other and jump out of the tank.
Great point!
SAE are aggressive fish had one chase fish around, nibble on fins of other fish. Eat algae when young not as much when older. Removed the SAE eventually never again
