It's not only manufactures. It is also pet store employees. I learned a very important message. Do your own research. Way back in the eighties, I asked a pet shop employee for a grouper that will grow twelve inches or less. Dude says, I got the perfect fish for you. He showed me a black grouper with bright yellow tiger markings. It was beautiful. I paid $80.00 for it. In less that 3 months it was over a foot long. It was constantly hungry. I was feeding it 6 inch comet goldfish, beef heart, and jumbo shrimp. It was costing more to feed this group than it was to feed my 65 lb pitbul. I went on a trip to the Cinncinati Zoo. Of course, I went to the aquatic section first. OMG, I saw a huge tank with one fish in it. It looked so different from my grouper. It was huge the length was 6-7 feet long. The coloration was faded, but the name tag said it was the same type of fish I had. It was a Bubblebee grouper. SMH, I knew I had a bigger problem than I thought at first. Probably that same week, Jacques Cousteau had a special on television. He showed a Bumblebee grouper that was almost twelve feet long. The moral of this story, do your own research.
I’m SO glad you’ve made this video! It needs to be out there. People new to the hobby get these kits, read the instructions, buy fish that are unsuitable and end up in a massive whirlpool of ether expense or animal neglect.
Great talking points. My fish have Wednesday off. I've ditched the filter cartridges and like rock matrix w/ sponge filter foam (Carbon free household). I bought a fluval flex 15g in college for my dorm and still have it running years later! I agree with using ferts on newer planted tanks, once they get established I just feed a heavier and don't deep gravel vac.
Great video John very informative as the old saying goes honesty is the best policy also can't wait every week to watch you and Jason it's one of the best pod casts for fish out there 👍👍
Good points that I learned along my journey. I am a once a day feeder, and with HOB's I would clean but put them back in for months. With the sponges and shark pros rinse the filters every couple of months. As for fertilizer, I review the plants. If they are dropping and turning brown I give a little in the tank, but not every week. Maybe a couple of times a year to keep things going.
I feed all 5 tanks once a day. Every week or 2 I skip a day just because I am in a rush to get out of the door and forget. Recently my family went on an 8 day vacation. I set up automatic feeders to feed every other day. I didn't finish setting up the feeder on the well stocked, heavily planted 75 because I was afraid someone would knock it off. Then we left and I forgot to finish setting it up. 8 days later all the fish were fine with no food for 8 days.
One thing being in the hobby for almost thirty years off and on, I've learned that what anyone who works at a big box store tells you listen to about 10% of it. Also do not feed your fish 2-3 times a day, that will cost you more in fish food, more water changes, more filter cleanings. I feed my fish once a day and have been for as long as I can remember (fry may get fed twice a day), 25% water changes on comfortably stocked tanks once a week, filter cleanings when the flow slows drastically. John just gave all the secret info away and now everyone will be in the hobby soon👍👍
Also, in a naturally, planted tank ? The fish are nibbling on the plants or any fallen 'bits' from those plants - or even the tiny life forms that live in that aquarium - so feeding that much 'fish food' isn't necessary for those reasons, too. Of course fish come to the glass when you go near the tank - they know a nice, kind hearted sucker when they see one ! :) "IF we go up to the glass, and look cute, they'll take pity on us, and feed us !" ;) LOL....
Your bang on to the truth…pick up any fish food products and read the feeding guide? And mostly it will tell you feed 3 to 4 times daily and remove any food that hasn’t been eaten. Thank you for an excellent video yet again. UK aquarium keeper
I feed once a day and sometimes skip a day. My fish all live, and I don't have to post to Reddit asking for help with my dying fish. I don't purposely skip a day; it just happens occasionally. It's fine. This guy is great at explaining how to keep fish alive and maintain a healthy environment.
This seems like good common sense to me. I do understand that most folks aren't retired like I am and maybe don't have the time to do their due diligence (research) and filter through the weeds of opinions on these subjects. Like you, I feed my fish (several tanks) once per day. I feed them a pre-set amount and even then I think it may be too much as I just noted recently that all my neons/cardinals are little fatties. I see that the bottom of all my tanks are picked clean between feedings so I think I'm pretty close. I also noted that, since I have neocaridina shrimp in every tank, the larger fish have an alternative food, that is, shrimp fry, to eat. I want to feed those larger fish enough so they lay off the shrimp/guppy fry but I'm not so ignorant to think they will take some thawed out dead brine shrimp over live fry. Not gonna happen. It is what it is.
I also do the same. But I feed enough to feed everything . I have more than just fish sharing the same tanks. I want to make sure every little critter is able to eat for the day. I can go away for a week without too much worry when I am not home.
Im a penguin fan myself. I've got 2 350s on my 55 cichlid tank, i think im onto about 5 years on the filter carts. I spray them out and put them back in. Been doing that weekly
I set my auto feeder to feed every other day in my 20g molly tank. Canister filter, and a shark nano for filtration. Everything in this aquarium is automated, and I love it. It let's me enjoy my tank. Please note, I still test my aquarium once a month, sometimes more. For anyone starting in the hobby, get an API test kit before you ever leave that store with a tank, and don't you dare bring fish home the same day.
I prefer the tetra HOB filter carriages. They get clogged up around a week, I rinse them out and put them back, they’ll last around a year until the polyester fluff starts to deteriorate and I replace them. Give got 2 of their 60g filters on 1 60 gallon tank and I wouldn’t call it overstocked but they fill up quick.
I'm feeding my fishes based on body mass percentage. I have over 10 kg (22 lbs) of fish mass in my pond, so I feed the pond 120 - 160 g (4 - 5 ounces) of pellet or other feed per day devided into 2-3 portions. Still in the range of 1% - 2% mass per day. Still a lot of food though, so I add 10-20% water change every other day.
I have a 55-gallon tank that's stocked with 12 different rainbow fish. 50 different tetras, 5 clown loaches. I'm looking for a new canister filter to combat the larger bio load in the tank. Was wondering how big of a canister filter would you recommend? Right now, I'm looking at the new sicce mega filtra that is rated to 150 gallon tank.
Hey man, big fan of the channel for a long time now but I need help. I have 5 mbuna cichlids in my fish tank and they have been doing really well however today i went up to the tank and they were very skittish and ran away from me. They usually never do this to me considering i interact with them every couple of hours throughout the day. When they run away they go to 1 corner of a tank all together and they are grouped up. I dont know if i should be scared or not or if this is normal for these fish, please help? I will also mention i went from feeding them 2-3 times a day to feeding them only once and they are still younger, id say 1 and a half to 2 and a half maybe 3 inches
Could you please do a video about dwarf gouramis? I searched all of the videos that you’ve posted and none of them talk about these guys. I’m interested in setting up a large tank with these as my centerpiece fish as I’ve done a lot of research on them. I would love to see your opinions on them and how you guys feel about them!
I feed my fish every 2 days...they are happy, healthy!( I have only small fish like tétras, corydoras). Maybe for bigger fish is better everyday! But Yep i agree with you! Never clean my filter or change the lava stones in it! Just the filter wadding from time to time or i clean it!
Agree with these. Another saver is if you have multiple tanks in a room, get an air pump and set up sponge filters. Individual filters on each tank is too expensive as you scale up. I keep one back on filter and place it on tanks when I clean them so they absorb the detritus after cleaning.
I agree but ive one got 2 3 tanks 1 has individual filter hob and a sponge, 1 just sponge, and 1 just canister 5 20 long, 65 gallon. Soooooo many plants
The feeding thing is crazy for sure because before I found Father Fish I was over feeding and of course had tank issues with algae growth, bacteria blooms, stinky filter, my fish getting bloat and dying. Now I feed 1-2 times a week for my small community fish. It’s so sad people are lied to about this and it’s why so many new fish keepers struggle with their tanks and eventually give up after so many failures and wasted money.
I feed my fish a small pinch once a day and that is all they need, happy healthy fish and lets face it,the giant turkey dinner i fed them the other day will keep them going for a while 😂
OMG you have no idea how much I needed this video. What do I owe you? My other half feeds 3 comet goldfish, 3 to 7 times a day. He feeds them flakes, and bug bites and mealworms and floating pellets, because THE CONTAINER SAYS SO. Do you know how often I change filters? Guess how many filters I have for the tank(55gal for now)I change 2 whisper 60 filters, that’s 4 filters every 3 days, sometimes I cheat and rinse them because it is crazy. Not to mention the sponge filter and a UV filter, that I have rinse constantly from all of the slime. I don’t even want to tell you how much I vacuum and change water, nor will I say how much of ammonia and nitrate and nitrite issue I have. He asks me why the water isn’t crystal clear, I say YOU FEED TOO MUCH, he disagrees. Can you please comment and tell him to please stop, HELP!
Yes, feeding goldfish 3 times a day is absolutely overfeeding. I can't even believe ANY producer say you should feed 7 times a day!? Is he stacking different producer advice on to each other, feeding 3 different foods 2-3 times per day? From your post, I'm a bit unclean about the filter situation. What do you mean with "change filters"? Are you changing cartridges in them every 3 days? That way, you will never establish any beneficial filter bacteria, and you will battle ammonia spikes forever, even with the feeding regimen in the video, with feeding 6 times per week. If I misunderstanding you, it's ok, if you need some advice on proper filter care, I'll be glad to answer any questions.
Hey random commenters other half! STOP feeding that much. You're doing more harm than good! I know how this works, I Tell Lisa things all the time and she ignores me but if someone else tells her it's the gospel truth. I'll send you a bill ha ha
@ I’m not totally random, more of an avid watcher/lurker for long time now, 😉. Thank you very much, I’m going to go get 125 gal in a couple of weeks and a canister filter, a very big one, lol.
can i ask how u keep oscars with bichir? how do u get food to the bichir without the oscars eating it first? and could i keep an oscar with a senegal bichir or would it be eaten.
In the wild fish snack all day long....as long as they are eating all the food the tank will not go bad. did you ever try eating one meal a day? you can do it but you wont be very happy. it says all they can eat not flood the tank also any that does not get eaten will feed your bacteria.
Jon - are you sure that this is true for aquascapes? Maybe talk with George Farmer - he talks about udd sad ing fertilizer daily and that plants have ‘ luxury uptake’ - and my experience is definitely CO2 injection and fertilising daily does make it better
Almost everyone over feeds. I only feed my fish every other day. They’re all growing. They’re all healthy pretty colors. Fish in the wild are not eating every day.
should i stop feeding my goldfish 3 times a day? some say to feed little but do 5 times? i only feed them what they can eat in 1 minute and nothing left they still ask for food after that! please clear my doubt of goldfish and kois in this regard😊😊
Fish are cold blooded, as such they don't need to eat to keep warm so they need a lot less food than we, who are warm blooded need. So once a day feeding won't harm them
Goldfish do better/grow faster with more feedings as long as the temperature isn't on the lower end a d there not having bloat issues. I feed mine 3 to 5 times a day. (my other tanks only get one feeding most days)
I work in one of those big box stores, and we hate those photos! Those of us who are actively trying to give good advice keep getting waylaid by the pretty but inappropriate pictures on the boxes of tanks.
Got 4 tanks 3 are with all the same fish or ones go with them in my 4th which is a 20gal i have 30 plus fish and 6 different ones that dont belong together but 2 yrs they been fine…. This is from the angle of all fish aren’t compatible together
Like going to trashptco and ask for a gold fish... and the lady asking what's the tank size... and say u can't take it if is not going to a 25GL per gold fish... but they have 15 gold fish on a 10GL...............
Fish food totally agree fertiliser do not agree have you seen George farmers fertiliser regime great videos all the same long time subscriber love the channel
Did you even watch the video? You know, I see a lot of stupid in the comment section every day, so this isn't unexpected, but maybe you should put your helmet back on and leave the thumbnails to the professionals.
You are so wrong about fertilisers. Low light- low tech planted aquarium, ok, maybe you are partially right, but in a high light planted aquarium fertilisers are necessity! Algae growth is not happening only when you have micro and macronutrients in excess, it is happening also if you don't have enough "food" for plants, so plants are dying slowly, but algae are thriving. Some plants need a lot of iron, some plants need a lot of phosphorus, or potassium. Every aquarium is an ecosystem by itself, you cannot say "You don't need a fertiliser", correct answer is "Maybe you don't need fertilisers, but it depends on: fish load, plant load, light, water, water changes, CO2, soil, feeding, etc..."
I hate the whole “this fish needs at least a 3 foot tank” when I go to buy my Oscar, but he was fine in the 1 foot tank for ages, just feed 2-3 times a week and clean when needed
Larger fish like Oscars DO need larger tanks. When you buy them as babies they may look like they will fit in a 10-20 gallon tank just fine but they soon grow up into very large fish that need MUCH more room. I wouldn't put an Oscar in any less than 4-5' long tank. Think about it this way: how big would you like the only room you get to live in to be?
@ I’m sure your fish will be very healthy but you won’t grow a 9” discus with that feeding schedule. Also I find good to be relatively cheap compared to other things that you have to buy. I feed beef heart mix to all fish which I get for free from most butchers
I too feed once a day. As someone with 7 aquariums and way too many fish and shrimp I was the most concerned with frozen foods. I’ve seen people toss 1 cube into 1 tank. Then there is me who thaws blood worms or brine shrimp then adds some dechlorinated water then use a turkey baster to give some to all 7 tanks and that 1 cube will last 2 days. My guppies and Cory’s would be dead if I let them have a whole cube.

Bottled Betta water by aqua one makes me laugh
Great video John very informative as the old saying goes honesty is the best policy also can't wait every week to watch you and Jason it's one of the best pod casts for fish out there 👍👍
Great advice. I'm just getting back into keeping fish and shrimp and was surprised to read the instructions saying to feed multiple times per day!
Excellent show ,always worry about overfeeding, but a month ago decided to do it just the once,

I feed 4 times a week. I skip Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
I’ve learned - you can open up the cartridge and wash the filter . I like to add filter wool which I wash out in hot water and then tank water .
THANK YOU John 🙏
You nailed it 👍
And the TRUTH shall set you FREE 😂
5:16 he said what the rest won’t and this why he where he at now 🎉love this guys truth
If I had a nickel for each time John has said he's going to piss people off in a video, I'd be able to afford to feed my fish 3 times a day everyday.
These days , I only feed on Monday , Wednesday , and Friday. I clean filters only when the flow diminishes.
Your bang on to the truth…pick up any fish food products and read the feeding guide? And mostly it will tell you feed 3 to 4 times daily and remove any food that hasn’t been eaten. Thank you for an excellent video yet again. UK aquarium keeper

Tell the marketing people in these companies that they need change what they need to get right.🐬🐠🐠🐠😱
Species specific, some results may vary, take everything with a grain of salt, ask questions,
This seems like good common sense to me. I feed every other day! Sometimes every three days for the smaller fish they'll scrounge around the detritus if they're hungry
I also do the same. But I feed enough to feed everything . I have more than just fish sharing the same tanks. I want to make sure every little critter is able to eat for the day. I can go away for a week without too much worry when I am not home.
Thank you Thank you for this video 😊
I agree John only fed my tanks once a day for years, more than that I found they just left food which ain’t good once a day they eat it all
I have one question the thing that you said about the fertiliser is the same about an aquarium that instead of soil have gravel?
Would you believe I’ve never rinsed off the throw away cartridges. Just never thought to do it. Thanks for the advice.
Better still, rinse cartridges by shaking and swishing in a bucket of aquarium water to keep biological action.
And that sir. Is why I don’t buy new cars. Poor advertising these days
I don’t feed AT ALL 2-3 separate days in a week. On the days I do feed it’s only once a day.
You are right about the HOB cartridge's, specialy with live plants! I get 3 months out of a cartridge!😜🐠
Toss the cartridge and get sponges instead
Yeah I looking for 20gal. Just to put them in for a couple of weeks. Just to see if they are sick. When I buy more fish
I hate how manufacturers shock stress fish by dumping them cold turkey in a tank for a 30 seconds advertisment.
I’ve been feeding my Asian arowanas every other day. Seems less picky with food these days.
Good video! I am going to get a Big Mac now 😂

Fun video! Also nice to have some validation on only feeding once a day.
I don't use fertilizer anymore either, and they even flower sometimes.
Great video John. Loved it. Well said.

Oh my goodness😬I feed my goldfish 4 xs a day😆 Ima slow that down. I DO change water twice a week.
@ I’m not totally random, more of an avid watcher/lurker for long time now, 😉. Thank you very much, I’m going to go get 125 gal in a couple of weeks and a canister filter, a very big one, lol.
Back when I was a kid people barbarically kept goldfish in BOWLS
Unfortunately some still do and think it's perfectly fine
I haven't put fertilizer in any of my planted tanks in years. One exception angelfish tank with Amazon swords get root tabs
Thanks I've probably been over feeding and because of that I think my snail population is out of control 😢
I've been pretty much only keeping betta fish these days, so feeding them two to three times? Oh no....once.
If you're running CO2, you'll need fertilizer, too.
Ask me how I know.
Hint: I learned it on this week's best podcast in the universe.
I got 10 peacocks in my 55 gallon over filtered tank for 2 years now and everything is just fine. Just exclude any females. There is levels to this 😅
I keep all mine in 10G tank no problem
Yall I didn't think I was gonna be this person... I just got 3 awesome looking mystery snails. Thought I was gonna be a shrimp only guy haha.
I feed my fish once a day and skip feeding every other Sunday and I have 10 tanks.
can i ask how u keep oscars with bichir? how do u get food to the bichir without the oscars eating it first? and could i keep an oscar with a senegal bichir or would it be eaten.
I feed my fish once every 2 days. They are super healthy and have lived for many years.
Honestly I’d like to visit the store or tank room do a video and leave 😂🤪
Almost everyone over feeds. I only feed my fish every other day. They’re all growing. They’re all healthy pretty colors. Fish in the wild are not eating every day.
0:04 yes
I've never used cartridges.
should i stop feeding my goldfish 3 times a day? some say to feed little but do 5 times? i only feed them what they can eat in 1 minute and nothing left they still ask for food after that! please clear my doubt of goldfish and kois in this regard😊😊
I only feed my nano fish once every other day sometimes fasting them two to three days before feeding one time and they are doing great
I work in one of those big box stores, and we hate those photos! Those of us who are actively trying to give good advice keep getting waylaid by the pretty but inappropriate pictures on the boxes of tanks.
Great Great morning TH-cam. Thank you. 😘
All you need to do is feed your fish once a day .
Love the Harry Potter names lol
Got 4 tanks 3 are with all the same fish or ones go with them in my 4th which is a 20gal i have 30 plus fish and 6 different ones that dont belong together but 2 yrs they been fine…. This is from the angle of all fish aren’t compatible together
When I had those filters I made my own cartridge
And here I was thinking you were talking about religion 😂😂😂
Like going to trashptco and ask for a gold fish... and the lady asking what's the tank size... and say u can't take it if is not going to a 25GL per gold fish... but they have 15 gold fish on a 10GL...............
I tried Flourish and my plants didn't flourish 😢
I agree 100%
Lol dude spends 40k on aquariums but complains about spending a couple pennies on food.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!
Fish food totally agree fertiliser do not agree have you seen George farmers fertiliser regime great videos all the same long time subscriber love the channel
I use my net to scoop all the stuff out of the tank. That's are oscars
Don’t have 🐟 🐟 but my 5 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶 get fed twice a day
Imagine if dog/cat food manufacturers said the same thing about feeding. I'd have some chonky dogs and cats!
How much did McDonalds pay you to make me want to go get a Bigmac?
Ha ha if they did I'd be rich!

Bro
This is nice
dont with the click bait
don't with the stupid comments
Did you even watch the video? You know, I see a lot of stupid in the comment section every day, so this isn't unexpected, but maybe you should put your helmet back on and leave the thumbnails to the professionals.
I feed once every other day and my fish are all fatboys.
Are you trying to be funny or did you mean this to be serious? If you're serious, I've got nothing to tell you, you're too far gone.
I disagree with you here. I feed 4-5 times a day when growing out discus
Growing out fish/fry is different.
@ I suppose you’re right. But even my adult discus get fed 3 times a day, same with my other fish rams, angelfish etc
Agree larger fish do better with more feedings.
You're wasting your money. I feed once a day four days a week, and the fish are fine, whether I'm growing out an oscar or arowana or keeping adults.
