I love all these, but a hugely underrated algae eating fish is the Molly. They are literally trash cans that eat darn near every type of algae. I had a massive hair algae outbreak while on vacation and while I removed a big chunk by hand (there was a ton), I added 4 Mollies and in 2 days, the hair algae was completely gone.
I love my 4 inch Bristlenose plecos. They eat not only the algae but any dead fish that have dropped out of sight down in the plants. Amazing tank cleaners.
As much as I love algae eaters for their capabilities, I find that a lot of them are very beautiful and I like to have them simply for the thrill of owning the fish and taking care of it 😁
Hi Nick, These are all awesome suggestions for algae eaters!!! I wish I could find the whiptails that you demonstrated! Just hard to get healthy ones around here. I have all the others in the video. I also have Siamese Algae eaters in all my tanks, they do an awesome job as well! LOVE LOVE LOVE your Shrimp!!! They look amazing!!! One thing I truly adore about what you say and do is how healthy and super superb you maintain your aquarium fish/shrimp! You are so good at offering simplistic ideas and solutions to many situations! THANK YOU!
I have a few otos, and I got them to eat prepared food by getting the kind that sticks to the glass. They love Sera veggie tablets, but at first they only ate what fell off the tablets while they were stuck to the glass, then they figured out they could eat them directly. Now they fight off the snails to get them.
My Otos will take repashy. Also, I think most of the sucker-mouth fish will also eat biofilm or might even prefer it. So providing a passive source of that with wood or leaves is a good idea. Makes sense that mollies are good for string algae because my platies will grab almost any type of filamentous algae.
I had a couple of hillstream loaches in my community tank before and they did okay at first, and i did my best to keep them well fed. But it was difficult with all the other nano fish in the tank, i felt like they outcompete them when feeding. Same goes for corydoras. I tried feeding them at night, i tried switching the light off and then feeding them, but i still couldn’t get them to eat much 🙁 I planned on setting up a tank just for them and keep them, maybe somewhere in the future.
Awesome video mate!, you mentioned caves for the bristle noses is there any ones you would recommend? As I have some larger nooks and gaps in the rocks and driftwood but he seems just sit behind all the plants on the back of the tank
Have you tried breeding Ottos? would be great to have homebreed ottos! I read some breeding reports, so it seems possible, but it seems like no one has really tried in a larger scale?
Can I ask how you prepare your wood for your tank, ive gotten some from our scrub property and there are sooo many wayvto prepare it for an aquarium just wondering how you do it please
I don't know if you can get Jordanella floridae it has a two common names American flagfish and Florida flagfish it is one of the best algae eaters I have seen just one of them took care of most of my algae in a 60 gallon mostly by itself, what I had in the tank was blanket weed, Cyanobacteria, hair algae (does not seem to eat diatoms as much even so it still does) it took this fish less then a week to clean a large tank that was looking really bad I'd highly recommend it.
You could add cuttlebone to your tank. My water is extremely hard well water, but I found adding cuttlebone to my tanks has helped my mystery snails shells.
I love my longfin bristlenose for that ❤ No diatom algae at all Question: why don't you add garra species like panda garra they will clean har algae Than any other fish. Just give a try
Any time i get algae its a sign i need to propagate. Any time i put pothos or philodendron cuttings in my tanks they clear the algae wonderfully, otherwise my bettas love to eat it when they get the chance, same with my guppies and danio fry ive been trying so hard to keep alive. At this rate i need another aquarium just to contain my cuttings! my propagations need to be propagated😂 ive always wanted another algae eater since my childhood pleco was.. sent to a farm by my grandmother while i was moving, but I didnt have a big enough tank for her then, and i certainly dont now with a 15-20gal and a 5gal. Hoping someday i get to own a chunky pleco again, i miss hand feeding my giant girly
Do you have any suggestions for black beard algae? My planted tank has crashed because of it and I'm almost about to pull it apart, it's so stubborn and keeps coming back, I've tried a over a month of blackout and removed everything inside I've used hydrogen peroxide but with no luck so far 😔
Hi Nick I know you probably wont respond but I really look up to you and your videos I would really appreciate if you give me some advice for breeding and selling fish as a 13 year old I have 3 5 gallons 2 4ft and one 15 gallon I can set up more tanks if I ask my parents.
(These are all fish he sells or uses in the breeding room - it’s no coincidence that the Hillstreams are available on the online store again - and he has a new algae wafer alternative food - this video is an ad)
@@DoubleUBAS Funnily enough I went to KFS for Hillstreams in September where they were sold to me as biofilm eaters. But they’ve been off the site since March or April I think due to stock. This vid definitely was a soft promo that they’re back, and selling them as algae eaters ensures the lowest common denominator of customers will show interest in them, not just niche collectors.
Indeee i had that Fishes and never cleaned the glass. Best glass cleaners are neritine, best algae eaters fron the planta planorbarius and others snails
Totally depends on the type of betta, and the desirability of the colour. Cheap bettas here in Aus are 12 to 25 from most petshops, usually crowntails and veiltails in more common colours, sometimes deltas and halfmoons and some more unusual colours, but they edge up from there. But from specialised breeders they tend to cost more, then add to that if they're desirable colours (galaxy, koi, marble, avatar, etc). It's annoying, but that just seems to be the norm in my experience, and just seems to based in a combination of demand for a certain type, plus how hard it is to achieve that type/how many might come from one spwan. My cheapest betta cost me 12 (a red crowntail), my most expensive was 78 (a giant plakat male), and my middle of the road boy was 55 (a dumbo plakat). The rest of mine have generally been under 30.
In my opinion , snail are better at eating algae , like black nerite snail, tiger and zebra snail, specially tiger are so good at cleaning everything, black nerites prefer to eat brown algae over green ones
I just clicked on this vidio and untill i found out the likes on this video were going higher and i got to know that this was posted 7 min ago and borther i need help as i was shifting to another contry and i have 2.5 week old molly frys and 2 bettas and i dont want to sell them so like any advice i could do ?
nobody wants crayfish, goldfish breeding requires insane amounts of space, tons of maintenance, and they die and get sick way more often than other fish.
I don't keep my algae eating fish to clean the algae! That's my job, I keep my algae eating fish because & I love them, & the amount of algae they eat is not important to me.
australian market got one of the most out rages pricing in the hobby when it comes to fish, they charge 40 bucks for 1 pair of nano rainbow fish. ridiculously over price. lol
@@laujack24 oh totally! He mentioned in his fucara rainbow vid that they got for $60 a pair. Here they are $7 each. No wonder he can make a living selling fish!
Hey Nick! I was wondering if you want some pure platinum guppies, I would love to sell some to you. If you want them I would love to come to your store and negotiate a price. I probably have 10-12 guppy fry up for sale. I could even give you a few for free (5-ish) I just really want you to have some, because they are very beautiful and vibrant. Thank you - Axomas (name is anonymous online)
most algae eater r over rate and only good vs easy algae type. the one thats really difficult to remove like spotted algae, black beard algae and green water those will not work on most of what u suggested. nerite snail is the only algae eater I would buy as they dont reproduce and actually can removed easy algae like diatom to tough algae like spotted algae. rest r kind of meh, specially the pleco species. they produce too much waste and after a while when they fully grow up simply dont eat algae no more and enjoy fish food instead.
Look at him all grown up!

Thank you for a very informative video and helping me feel better about having to do chores to keep my tank clean.
Thanks for the great video!!! I really needed this one!
I find Otto's to be very good algae eaters but they do not seem as hardy as bristlenose

Glad you put Mollies on your list of fave algae eaters. They are fantastic at it.
I love Mollies but they are tropical aren't they?
Very interesting- thanks for sharing this content, it is really helpful your insights 🙏🙌
I would add that Rosey Barbs seem effective at eliminating modest amounts of BBA.
great video, lovin' the moustache ! any videos on getting rid of pest snails!

Boil Cucumber slices. Cool them, drop them in the tank. Snails will get on them. Just remove the Cucumber.

Did you have success breeding otocinclus?or raising the fry? Want to know how? I have done it in the past...
