Oh what a trip down memory lane!
I bought the Battle For Macragge set for $50 in 2007, which was a lot for a middle schooler. I never got to play with anyone but that kickstarted me down this deep road and here I am.
    Notes:
*I still use the little red rulers and blast markers for other tabletop games because they are so convenient to use.
*One or two of the space marines had models without helmets but I didn't find out until years later because the faces weren't very detailed and I had painted everyone's heads ultramarine blue.

2:30 - "I suspect that technically for Games Workshop tournaments, you could still play him as a death dread if you wanted to, but I think you might get some strange looks."
Considering the general humor and shtick of Orcs, them marching a giant cardboard drawing across the field as if it was a unit would kind of be on brand for them, wouldn't it? Like that one unit where one is carrying a sign that says something like "No Orks Here" along with his buddies using upsidedown metal trash cans as disguises. The only weird part would be it having guns...except given the way Ork psyker powers work - basically, if enough of them, together, believe something, strongly enough; it becomes reality (if I understand their lore correctly enough) - might even make THAT work.
    Orks, man...
Cool history lesson. : ) Just got my Rookie Starter Box and just starting in Warhammer 40k now (need to go buy some clippers - my standard wire cutters DO NOT seem to be cutting it, er, figuratively speaking, for getting the parts out of the sprues), and it's cool seeing the history that got us here.

I began with the Second Edition one. People tend to mock it now, and the minis we got, but it was still a great box at the time. Tons of minis, terrain, lots of books, templates, etc. And lol, the card dreadnought.
Though to be fair, the box was dirt cheap, and the actual Space Ork Dreadnought model at the time was not a huge improvement, over the card one! The Dreadnoughts in Rogue Trader and early Second Edition looked VASTLY different than current ones do.
Most vehicles back then did not actually have models to represent them yet.
Anyway, I loved that box. I don’t remember the US price and my box doesn’t have a price tag on it. But I was able to buy it, even as a kid, off of my pittance of lawn-mowing money. So my recollection is it was very inexpensive.

Hindsight being 20/20 I cant believe that we got the paperback rulebook, a tactical squad, 8 genestealers, and 12 termagaunts olusbthe steller terrain for only $50. It certainly made us hesitant to pay the MSRP for the actual kits. Granted each if the models were push fit monopose, but the value was undeniable. We also picked up Assault on Black Reach when that came out.
Getting back in with Dark Imperium I was shocked at how much the price had increased for the starter set but the value went up to match. I think each half was what, 800 points or so?

The Termagants boxed set from 3rd Edition was a mixed box of 8 Termagants and 8 Hormagaunts (and enough Rippers to make a single base), so while they might have shared some sculpts with Macragge, it was a different sprue entirely. I started with 'nids in 3rd Edition a few months before the release of their codex and my early collection was largely repackaged mono-pose Termagants & Genestealers from 2nd Edition that GW sold in boxes of 4 each for $5 (US)!

I bought Assault on black reach. And i gotta say its still my favourite starter to this day. Good ork units and terminators.
Sadly lost the powersword of the captain. Replaced it with a spare powerfist i had. Also missing rotors on one deff kopta.
i recently found Battle of Macragge at a flea market. Had all the units and terrain still on sprue. Only things missing was the book(s)
And heres the kicker, paid 25 kroner for it. Thats less than 4 american dollars. Flea markets rule.
I get why they swapped out terrain for better units though. Gotta say the terrain is really the only part that isnt underwhelming.
Also Im not a fan of Dark Angels. Thats why i prefer black reach over Dark Vengeance.

I had the 2nd edition box set. Sooooo many grots! Currently repainting the marines as I've dusted off the mighty blood angels for the first time in about 20 years. The tactical squads have flames and missile launchers each. Still got all the old card too

For me it all started with me discovering the beautiful game that is Dawn of War 1. I was 14 at that time and after I played it with my brother we decided to buy a few models. The current starter set was the one with the ultramarines and the tyranids and now another 14 years later we both are still huge Warhammer 40k fans.

I'm just getting started in 40k and my friend offered me a Dark Imperium box, still sealed for painting 3,000 pts of his Nids. He even tossed in a Start Collecting Space Marine box and paints to go with my Indomitus box Marines. Really like that Dark Imperium boxset.

I really like how the older boxers had Space marine artwork other than Ultramarines. GW needs to do that more often.

I got the 3rd edition starter box in 2004, probly just befor the launch of 4th, I was at a family wedding across the country and my uncle took me out for my 10th birthday. We found a comic book store and I saw the box and thought dahm that looks cool. I'm 27 now and I have played most systems of table top games. The hobby has been the only consistent thing in my chaotic life.

Actually the second Ed game Marines had two flamers, two Sargent with bolt pistols and two missile launchers among all the bolters. Additionally the pegs and sockets on the Sargent's bolt pistol arm, the missile launcher arm and the Space Ork boy bolt pistol arm allowed for a tiny bit of pose-ability. This was my way into the hobby too and I still have it with all it's wargear cards and tokens. As you say the card Ork dread is a weird addition and It hadn't occurred to me that it was still valid. Also it's probably the closest thing you'll get to Codex Squats with most of the rules and wargear they had at the time in 1 place.

Dark Vengance was the boxset that got me started. It's the boxset that had the Dark Angles space marines vs. the forces of chaos. It the introduce the new chaos cultists as well as chaos Chosen, but GW stoped producing them two years after the box was released.

I started with 3rd edition as a Christmas gift, then got Battle for Macragge. I still have the Macragge box somewhere, I’d quite like to find that pilot miniature to paint up 😁

I started WH in 1993, but the first actual starter box I got was Black Reach. I just painted the Orks from it last month! 12 years isn't that long, right?

So... I got the battle for maccragge... still have the minis. It did include as well a plasma nuke that the pilot could ‘carry.’ It also had a homing beacon.
I was in a comic shop in ft Wayne IN, and the store owner asked if I bought 2 boxes of the starter set, he would sell them to me for a total of $45 total. Apparently he was short on the pre order for a discount. Best 40k buy I ever got.... still got my 6 deff kopters and all those models..

Nowadays, I retired the badass tank due to it being succeeded by the Repulsor Executioner...

I always loved the 2nd Edition Tactical Squads. My mental image of Marines was much more of a faceless, uniform line of troops bearing down on the enemy rather than the individual models of today with robes and stuff- all the bling gets in the way of smiting the xenos.

Black reach was what got me and my brother into the hobby with us both having an army from it and the space marines from the kit remain in my army in perfect shape to this day (even have two of those captains because of eBay)
