2018 wasn't the first year of the EcoSport globally, although it was in North America. There was a first generation sold in other markets (mainly India) that even had a manual transmission and a rear mounted spare tyre. Ford imported these in 2018 because they had discontinued the Fiesta and they needed something to replace it.
I have an '18 SES that I bought as my winter car. My summer car is a nicely-modded Fiesta ST. The '18 SES was the only EcoSport to come to the US with paddle shifters, and I like them. The sport suspension makes it handle off-road and corners very well. The more I drive it, the more I like it. Has all the options, including the winter package (heated seats, steering wheel, front wipers, and heated mirrors). It's not fast, but power is adequate and it handles freeway speeds with no problem. The AWD is absolutely brilliant. It's great on snow and mild off-road.
I love how you go into detail about how ford no longer has a an "entry level" car anymore. Neither does Chevy. Ford and Chevy no longer care about lower income (Below 50K a year) anymore. They're only after the "middle class" family ($70K+ a year) market, unless you take out a 7 year loan with crazy interest.

I read that these were originally intended for developing markets like India where the only criteria is "it's cheap and better than a moped". These were poor quality, underpowered, and uncomfortable. It's a shame the Focus and Fiesta were killed because people want to sit up high. Ford had to offer a small car like everyone else and these were readily available. The tiny wheels show that this is just a stretched Fiesta hatch. A full-size spare tire is critical in countries with poor infrastructure. It's actually kind of funny that it came here, but because it was only on the base model you got the idea that Ford really didn't want to do it. At least we still have Mitsubishi making cheap crappy cars now that even Kia and Hyundai have moved upmarket.
Not poor quality. The Ecosport is a nice vehicle. Not just for India and developing markets. The Ecosport design looks like it came from Ford of Europe.
