For anyone who hopes to be in the music biz, this is probably the best advice you're ever going to get. Without a tribe, nothing else can or will happen. I've done exactly what Damian described here in my career in the art world. My fans have become friends, clients and most important... my biggest promoters by sharing my work with their friends, etc... Watch this video twice, three times or more until it really sinks in because in 2019, without your own personal fan base, nothing much else will happen !
A few years ago, I took part in some corporate, leadership training. One of the biggest lessons they taught us was that you need to start with the "Why", not the "How" or "What". I think this is a big part of the message you have shared here. We need to think of our fans and know the reason "why" they should be our fans. What can we do for them and not just what they can do for us. Thank you for these wonderful lessons!
I used busking to get in front of real audiences daily. Hundreds of shows of experience without having to spend a second booking. When you can turn strangers into fans on the street then the world is yours. Good stuff Damo! 🐒
4:10 This is huge, Damo, you are a genius!!! Now I understand why I love a band so much. They are a local alternative metal and alternative rock band and they opened up for another band at a gig that I was at. I liked their music but it was nothing serious. After the gig I bumped into the singer and started talking to him. We, introduced ourselves and after a while, said goodbye. I went to their following gig and when he saw me he instantly recognised me and greeted me. Before they started playing he asked me whether I was interested in getting one their CDs. I obviously said yes, however I had to leave after the gig and I couldn't talk to the guy. So, this is why I love them so much. I am just 16 but they look after me. ☺😍 I am going to their next gig in August, we'll see if I get my little CD. 😁😂
Your video changed my response to my fans where I would post my next show date, but only “LIKE” their comments. Now I will reply a personal thanks to each of their comments. Thank you
I’ve been in the ‘music business’ for many years and I find the current opportunities far beyond anything we’ve seen. I always learn something useful from your videos as I maneuver through the ‘new’ world of marketing and fan building. By the way, whoever said “just make the best music and they will find you”...was delusional. I’ve seen many world class acts starved out of the business for lack of these skills. Oklahoma here.
Thanks for the video, super instructive! Consitency might be the worst beast I have to tame. I spent 4 years studying music at college (I just graduated) trying to be consistent in my daily instrument, music writing and ear training practice and thought that would calm down when I finish the program. But now that I'm out of there, I realise that I have many other things that requires a small daily amount of time...I guess I need to work on my self-discipline.
I just found you yesterday! I'm a singer/songwriter from DFW area and back in January of this year I made a commitment to post a video each month. I call it "Behind the Song" where I talk about the inspiration, genesis and creation of the song. I post it on my youtube channel and then copy the link and post it to my regular FB and FB artist page. I really don't get too many "likes" or responses, though I do get some. In June and July I "boosted" the post, but it didn't really seem to make much of a difference and I'm skeptical of the data FB has given me as well as charging me again for boosting when I didn't request it. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I'll watch your video's and keep trying to plug along. Thanks for your commitment to education. Social media is difficult for me, but we're never too old to learn and I hope to learn a lot from you!
"Emotion driven" I like that...cunning ...but actually its honest too..when I write message songs I believe in the message so why not share it...good point and easily achieved..Can't believe I missed that. Thanks Damo I will dig deeper into this.
This is the 2nd video of yours I have checked out Damian. I really enjoy how you give very accessible advice to us indie artists. Keep doing what you're doing - have subscribed. Will keep you in mind if you were ever interested in work as a bassist. By the way, this is me engaging with you ;) 100% agree about constant communication with fans
Thank you so much dude 🙂🙂🙂 I don't play as much as I used to as the businesses take up so much time but always up for helping musicians and know loads of great musicians if things pop up 🙂
Amazing advice as always. One thing I'm doing that's slightly different in order to connect with my audience is create surveys to send out to them asking them for feedback on what they like/dislike about my music and what they're most interested in.
Damian Keyes it’s not easy to understand what you want to do as a musician and composer and communicate about it to your fans. It takes more than a full time job to produce, play, record music and discuss with your audience. The music industry is the most difficult business in the hole world but that’s why it’s so challenging!
Domenico Curcio yeah absolutely dude it’s a tough industry but the good news is there is more support now than there has been for a while. If I can help with anything hit me up
@@DamianKeyes I started more than 10 years ago to post my piano solo videos on youtube and to give concert at people's home livestreamed online in 2008. Today I'm making piano covers and prepare my new album Piano Solo album and I'm really amazed by all the products, the tools, the youtube channels available online for free or almost free ;-) ... So many tips and advices... It helps me a lot to build my new project. I recently create my first "storytelling video" to apply to the Gonzervatory and it was a pleasure to read comments of my fans. It was my first "speaking" video. Sharing and speaking to the fanbase is very important and sometimes you are so obsessed by the quality of the music that your forget the human part, the caring part of your journey.
your videos have already turned mine and my band’s outlook around on promo, and building a fan base up. we’ve been a band for two years and have only played shows sporadically when we can get one booked. your tips have made us more serious about booking and staying up to date on social media. thanks for all the help! 🙏 -Brady, Drummer of FMLB
Enjoyed the video, it confirms a lot of the experience that I've had recently where the more vunerable I am the more people engage. One thing that I have noticed working is being honest about the struggles of being a musician. I think we all want to put up this image of being super successful and having it figured out. What I have found is people really want honesty and can see right through image. Great content, keep up the good work.
i’m an aspiring musician and your advice has been so useful, i’m trying to educate myself right now on how to go about it right and you’re my main source! thank you so much!
This is total gold, Damo - as always. The underlying message also informs who should be IN your band, as band mates - not simply people who are "really good at drums" or similar, but rather people who understand the principles you espouse. Nothing will grow if only one or two people in the band care or consider the need for community and care for fans. Cheers
Really interesting. Useful tips. And the first thing with creating fans instead of getting fans is so freaking true. Often people are bagging for the attention of new followers instead of making their own brand make their own thing. People will come to you to follow you if they see your passion and if it’s theirs too
Watching one of the videos with my coffee in the morning really helps set me up for a day or critical/ productive thinking about my music. Thanks Damian!
Hi Damien. Love your videos man! Thanks for all the great info and content. Just found you yesterday. Love the videos Damian! Started watching you in 2018 but then took a break and after watching your last video you brought me back again haha. Really appreciate the advice ;)
From your question at the end- I guess the one thing in which I do well is telling stories on Instagram and playing guitar in weird places. Although, I play in a very niece style and I don't know if I overdo it because everything is super slow and it's not really what other people who play like me with the same amount of followers do haha. Seems people would rather listen to lots of music/video posts which although works, it seems boring to me. Very unsure Awesome video as always though and I've now got a lot to think about!

FINALLY a marketing person covers this in detail! #THANKYOU DAMIAN! I would like to ask you and anyone reading this though; what are you finding to be the most effective ways of bringing in new people online? Facebook ads? Etc
Thank you! I know it sounds silly but I think since a lot of the algorithm changes over the past few years people are determined to cheat the system. My advice is if you want to get seen then learning about FB/Insta ads is amazing but people don't talk enough about making some content which is truly remarkable. Something that people will desperately want to see and come back for more time and time again.. I know thats hard but we do it with our musis so why not our content 🙂🙂🙂
So relevant! Thanks for the useful vid :) Agree that #3 is the thing that really needs to be worked on (I think taylor swift is known for really providing value to her fans). I collect cover requests and then there was one time I sent a subscriber a rough recording of the cover via email and they enjoyed it! But I agree that building conversations and connections online through "deeper" content (content that shows more of your personality, likes, and dislikes) helps your fans know you more too.
These videos are always super helpful. My band, Goodword, has benefitted a lot from this channel. We will definitely be thinking about new ways to connect emotionally.
I’ve thought about doing a video series where I create and write songs for my fans, about things they’re going through or feeling or experiencing. It’s a personal song written for them... I don’t know if this would work or not or if people would be into it....
Damian, I love seeing your videos! They've really educative and I feel I'm being prepared for a time when I'll actually start putting out music. Keep up the good work mate! Hope to see more great content soon.
Great advice, Damien. Up until a couple of months ago, I was guilty of posting nothing but selfish posts: Click this! Buy this! Go here! I realised I hate it when I get flooded with instructions by people I don't know or care about, so why would anyone care when I do it? You can make the best music in the world, but if no one's gonna hear it, then who gives a shit? Gotta connect with people!
Great approach. It's all about connecting with people after all. I've got a channel for deeper topics. But wondering how to connect that with a music channel - to create a unified brand.
Hi Damian, thanks very much for this clip. It's exactly what I needed to hear, especially as I want to start carving out a career in music and building an audience base for my work. I've put the word out on your channel to a number of musician friends and relatives where I live in Brisbane. :-)
Hi Damian, thanks for videos. I would really like to hear what you would think/say about it: what is better - spend more money for reaaaly good instruments, or maybe buy sth in the middle but spent rest of the money(same amount) for good coaches (like vocal coaching or working with a producer)?
Amazing question Aleksei, I absolutely would prioritise your career and your knowledge more than your instruments. I made a video very early on about this because I feel like musicians get caught up in the perception of looking professional instead of becoming professional... Maybe I should do another video on this as its a great topic.. Thanks dude!
Hey Damian! Great content as always. I was just wondering one thing... With this approach, once you get to big numbers of fans, like over 100, 1000, 10,000 - the number listed on this video... How do you maintain the level of communication and relationship the early adopters would have come to expect?
Just getting my Ytube together, however, as to what I do on my regular FB feed - #1 Always Positive, 2. Cool travel scenes from my journey 3.Share fellow musician's tunes, 4. Climate Change info. GREAT VIDEO THANKS
Hi Derek, I would suggest a mix of content. You're job is to bring value and look after a community.. telling your stories, showing off your music, being a part of the local community or a certain genre community. How that looks is up to you whether it's a bit of performance or vlog style or stories from history... Or if you are politically driven then that might fit in. This is the bit where creativity falls to you on what you think looks good and is valuable
@@DamianKeyes Thanks Damian, you've put it in a nice concise manner "a bit of performance or vlog style or stories from history" all 3 will work well for me. Being a back in the day music industry survivor I'm quite excited about the new frontier Keep up the great work! D.
Hey Damian, great video! My band have started a weekly vlog of songs we find inspirational with a blog on our webpage and a Spotify playlist to go with it. Do you think this has enough value for an audience? What would you recommend we do to promote this content? Cheers!
Man u really get it. I said of the girl with the failed fashion line ( can't think of her name) She wasen't providing anything of value. I have a channel where I give inspiration, encouragement and advice to artist as well as creators and entrepreneurs. Im taking this approach with my lyrics and music.
A.D Fairhurst 😊 now we’re talking my language! Bass!!! 😊😊 The white one is a reissue, I was on your a few years ago and struggling with both my P basses and fell in love with it in a shop in Germany. It’s only about 5 years old but i love the block inlays. My main basses are my black 77 P and my white 76 P but I have several others I don’t use that much. I have 2 Jaydee Mark king basses (pink and blue) I adore but never gig or play them. I also have a 5 string musicman I love but again rarely get a chance to play.. I love talking bass 😊😊
Hey Damo You ask what I can do for my fans to give them value. First thing that came to mind, _practice my singing_ I went and did it in the car on my way to my client’s.
hey Damo, you give so much stellar advice I have to toss a YT tip your way - titles in all caps don't get ranked as highly, it is generally better to only put at most a few words of the title in all caps - I would link to some data-driven research that clearly demonstrates this fact but don't want YT to filter my comment due to containing an outside link
Really liked this video Damian! I'm re thinking my whole approach to social media after FB jail separated me from my 500 Page Likes which took 2 years to get. I'm going back to blog posts, sharing and email distribution, see how that goes.
I really enjoy your videos, but you should really consider mastering your audio! Your videos are almost always several db lower than the majority of other videos I watch on TH-cam. Since you work in the music industry you should have no problem finding someone to do that for you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Cheers!
I have been un-active on social media for a year now and I have lost any respect for the platform that I had, this video has showed me the light of the new world and that I will literally be left behind if I don't pick my stuff up. It will be a hard task befriending this little phone of mine, but I shall try overcome the very thing responsible for my anxiety by either not giving a fuck and posting my journey until I quit or eventually getting someone to handle it for me. I will also create an artist instagram so I don't feel anxious posting to an uninterested audience.

Yo.
Link your band.
Thanks so much 🙂🙂🙂
I’ve thought about doing a video series where I create and write songs for my fans, about things they’re going through or feeling or experiencing. It’s a personal song written for them... I don’t know if this would work or not or if people would be into it....
Ty for inspiring me to put out my first single!
Thank you Damian! So good! Sharing is Caring!
Thanks Dario
Damian, I love seeing your videos! They've really educative and I feel I'm being prepared for a time when I'll actually start putting out music. Keep up the good work mate! Hope to see more great content soon.
Very Well Said Sir! I wish I could give you 5 thumbs Up!
Thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂
Excellent information.
This is a great video. Yes. Servant mentality. So good.
Thanks Ryan
Great advice, Damien. Up until a couple of months ago, I was guilty of posting nothing but selfish posts: Click this! Buy this! Go here! I realised I hate it when I get flooded with instructions by people I don't know or care about, so why would anyone care when I do it?
You can make the best music in the world, but if no one's gonna hear it, then who gives a shit? Gotta connect with people!
thank you for the video sir, i just subscribed after watching this
Thank you so much and welcome to the club! 🙂🙂🙂
Such a great and practical video. I am definitely going to be implementing some of your points. Thanks for what you do mate 👌
So proud of you gorgeous :)
❤❤❤ Love you! xxx
Great approach. It's all about connecting with people after all. I've got a channel for deeper topics. But wondering how to connect that with a music channel - to create a unified brand.
Damn dude, the bit about social media posting gaps, that hits home hahaha. I REALLY WISH we had a better handle on that.
As an average musician at best this is great advice . Going to change my approach which has been timid at best
Hi Damian, thanks very much for this clip. It's exactly what I needed to hear, especially as I want to start carving out a career in music and building an audience base for my work. I've put the word out on your channel to a number of musician friends and relatives where I live in Brisbane. :-)
Thank you so much and hi to sunny Brisbane from almost sunny Brighton! 🙂🙂
thank you for this...shoutout from kenya
Muchas gracias por tu consejo sabio. Escribo en español para que el crecimiento siga siendo masivo. Good vibes from Spain !
Thank you! You efforts are much appreciated.
Great job and keep going!
Thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂
This really made me think deep 🧐once again thank you for cutting through the shit and always keeping it real
Thank you so much Aaron
Thank you
Damian, another great video! Thank you for your consistent content, this video is incredibly relevant and will help me a lot!
great notes brother! that's two beers i owe you!
Damien "come on a journey" Keyes
Love this channel man 😄
HA HA There is a T-shirt right there ... 'The journey'. Thanks dude! 🙂🙂
This is good I like this thank you!!
One day I'm going to meet Damian Keyes and thank him for all the gems he has dropped
Always great videos and consistently informative. Thanks:-)
Learning how to use social media properly is even harder than learning an instrument haha.
Hey Damian! Great content as always. I was just wondering one thing... With this approach, once you get to big numbers of fans, like over 100, 1000, 10,000 - the number listed on this video... How do you maintain the level of communication and relationship the early adopters would have come to expect?
I think this is an excellent question.
Matt Watson music has a comment below that may answer some of this question.
Thanks@@laylonighee , appreciate you taking the time to respond! :)
@@simonvegas793 Your welcome. I feel like everyone on here is probably musicians in the same boat. Part of the tribe ;)
@@laylonighee Yeah is nice to be part of a positive TH-cam community, so much negativity on here!
Just getting my Ytube together, however, as to what I do on my regular FB feed - #1 Always Positive, 2. Cool travel scenes from my journey 3.Share fellow musician's tunes, 4. Climate Change info. GREAT VIDEO THANKS
Hi Derek,
I would suggest a mix of content.
Thanks Derek 🙂🙂🙂
Awesome episode! 😊 this is crucial to do. :)
I hope you had an eBooklet available that sums up the most important aspects of 'Creating A Reputable Fanbase'.
Hey Damian, great video! My band have started a weekly vlog of songs we find inspirational with a blog on our webpage and a Spotify playlist to go with it. Do you think this has enough value for an audience? What would you recommend we do to promote this content? Cheers!
This video is a Bohemian Rhapsody of marketing 🙏🙏😂😂!!!
Man u really get it. I said of the girl with the failed fashion line ( can't think of her name) She wasen't providing anything of value. I have a channel where I give inspiration, encouragement and advice to artist as well as creators and entrepreneurs. Im taking this approach with my lyrics and music.
I’ve seen that Fender Jazz in a few of your videos. Out of curiosity, is it an original 70s one or a reissue? Great videos by the way!
A.D Fairhurst 😊 now we’re talking my language! Bass!!! 😊😊
The white one is a reissue, I was on your a few years ago and struggling with both my P basses and fell in love with it in a shop in Germany.
Damian Keyes Thanks for clearing that up. Your videos are an invaluable resource to me man, so thanks again!
gold info
Hey Damo
You ask what I can do for my fans to give them value. First thing that came to mind, _practice my singing_
I went and did it in the car on my way to my client’s.
hey Damo, you give so much stellar advice I have to toss a YT tip your way - titles in all caps don't get ranked as highly, it is generally better to only put at most a few words of the title in all caps - I would link to some data-driven research that clearly demonstrates this fact but don't want YT to filter my comment due to containing an outside link
Thanks so much Max I will let Morgan know as he uploads all my vids 🙂🙂🙂
Congrats Jahara and good luck. Most importantly try and enjoy the journey and the creating as much as the excitement of arriving 🙂🙂🙂
