Worse is that you can pay a terrible price as did David Baily , Magoo and many others . Back in 1984 riding my CR 500 in the expert class , if I won it was usually a 50 $ payday and a trophy . That let me break even on gas and entry fee for the day ( EOMA ontario ) I did a few CMA races that got me about 200 $ ( winnings and Honda cash ) but they were a long drive so I stuck to the local races
I will bet you he is just as sick of the sport as I am. Since the FIM and EPA took over the sport, the only thing I like about it is the riders efforts and the aftermarket efforts.
I completely agree with Bob HH and I'm so glad he said it, although the bikes changed the riders didn't get better. The Roger's and Heikki's would have blown these modern riders away. These newer riders have adapted to the technology provided by the newer bikes and track's and there's no going back. That's why the late 60's 70's, to the mid 80's are such a special period in Motocross.

That should earn Hannah's endorsement alone. The guy helped form my life of ambition and integrity. This man does not have a tape recorder for a brain, just repeating what the masses say, and today, we need to hear from those people as much as possible. I will bet you money he says "The claiming rule is theft and redistribution. Theft and redistribution is based on communism, not protecting private property rights. If you agree with the claiming rule, you are agreeing with communism." Bob would day it, because it is true. Would be nice if somebody with integrity would say it publicly. Bob "The Hurricane" Hannah was the reason I started riding Yamaha as a kid. My 1st real bike was a 78 YZ80, then I started racing & had 3 82 YZ80J's, 1 stock, 1 built practice bike & a race bike. Those little phukers ripped! My room had Hannah posters everywhere, he was my hero back then, thanks Bob!

I used to hang out with Bob and his aviation company partner Kasey at air shows as a kid. My dad works in aviation (and used to race) so we’d travel to air shows as exhibitors. They were the coolest. Haven’t seen him in over 15 years though. Hope he’s doing well!
I have talked with Hannah at a local track in SC back in the 80's and can tell you he was all about being the best. That is what mattered to him as he said and I believe him, money was just the after effect. He was a good dude and would always take the time to sign autographs and speak when some of the others wouldn't.
Is still the man! This vid brings 3 people together. In the early 80s I lived in Boise, had a young motocross racer as a roommate, he was a friend of Bob’s. Hanna had been to our house a couple of times. Today 37 years later, Bob is retired, and the young MXer that was my roomie is the suspension guru for team KTM, working for Roger!
Bob Hurricane Hannah will always be one of the best American riders. Saw him many times he blew by everybody on his Yamaha at Saddleback, De Anza and Indian dunes. It all changed when he broke his leg on the water. Defiantly in my top 10 0f the 70's

Top ten of the 70's? Roger DeCoster, Joel Roberts and Bob Hannah, top 3 racers/personalities in the in the history of the industry globally. Sure, RC may be the GOAT of MX, (and nobody will beat that). But he is a moron off the track, so he is disqualified. I am talking about Hero's, not just anybody in the top 10. (which today are on the same second/lap, and nobody is great.). My observations.
@@holysmoker10 No, yesterday the tracks separated the talent, and it was always the top 2 or 3 guys,---but by 4 seconds a lap. Today, it is who ever feels the best that day and makes the least amount of mistakes,---because the top 8 guys are very very close to the same speed. Watch the live lap scoring charts. You can see how people are going to finish in the top 10 80% of the time by the half way point of the race. The tracks today are actually made to keep everybody the same speed, (especially SX rhythm sections that might as well have a speed limit sign posted before each of the 5 sections). They all have the tracks wired, and it wrench havoc on the confidence of the most talented. If I can beat Ken Roczen racing around my driveway that I have wired, of course it will destroy his confidence. Only a change of perspective on a new team saved Eli from the same fate. It is evil to sabotage the best talent for the good of the all. It is evil to steal their bike, (private property), and give it to somebody else to.
I met Bob a number of times over the years as a racer and as a mechanic. He is straight talk no BS. People either loved him or hated him back then. He has my respect because he gave it all he had all the time. Never took a day off. We used to say “f**k’n Hannah has the will to kill today”. He would go beast mode and just wear you out. Respect.
I remember at a High Point national in West Virginia in the early 80s Hannah and Howerton were literally wheel to wheel for most of the race. They were pushing each other to the max, best race that I ever saw, the freakin best.
There's only one guy that I love to watch interview and that's Hannah, would love for him to do all the race commentary, he would spice it up, fan for life.
I knew Bobs dad when I was a young teen in the early 80s and can tell you Bob gets his grit from his old man. Bill Hannah traveled around in a van and trailer in those days and stayed wherever he wanted in different seasons throughout the year. He would stay in my hometown each year at about the same time. I never knew his age then but what I remember about him most was that old guy rode a bicycle daily distances that would break many younger men and rode a TT 350 Yamaha on trails better than many younger riders. I rode with him several times on trail rides and he was a tough dude.
I saw Hurricane Bob Hannah at the I believe the very first super bowl of motocross at the Los Angeles Colosseum when I was probably 13 yrs old. He was the first rider to jump across the giant woop-di_doo instead of riding through it. He rode the fastest and jumped the highest and he won the event. I'm 60 yrs old now and I still remember it. He just wanted to win.
Man, Bob Hannah, he is the KING OF SAVES. When he's about flip out off the saddle and over the bars, he can still save it that seldom other riders can. The other guy on the comment was right, this video should've been longer.

Hannah was my Motocross hero .. I have owned mostly Yamaha's in my life.. Saw him Live a few times at Red Bud in the late 1970's he mostly won. Marty Smith practically flew over the Top of me going over an uphill Jump during practice. I was on my 1978 Yamaha YZ-100-E and Marty Smith was on an RX-500 R.I.P. Marty and his wife ..
I still have a picture of him on a Yamaha wearing Scott Plastic MX Boots.I think that I cut this picture out of a Motocross Action Magazine that I subscribed to for years.I always loved reading Jodie's Box,The Shootouts and the articles on the Riders.Bob was right about The Legends of the 60's and 70's,Roger DeCoster,Joel Roberts and Heiki Miekola.I know that I spelled the last Ones name wrong it's been a looong time ago.These guys had to take it easy on the Bikes so the Bikes would finish the races.
I saw him race in 1976 at Rio Bravo in Houston, and he was just flying through the whoop section. After the race, his face was as red as a beet. LOL I bet he remembers that day for sure. It was like 100 degrees and 100% humidity. Most of the pros hated racing Texas in the summer. I grew up here. And yes, it is very very tough doing 30+ minute motos. 40+, hell no.

I like Hannah, I had the pleasure to meet Decoster on a plane ride from MCO to PHX, very cordial guy. My favorite guy to watch was James Stewart. I really thought he had the most physical riding style, he had great finesse and style but he looked to me like he would never tire out....my opinion. More videos with the Hurricane, I just subscribed - thank you!
Don't quit broski. I hung up the spurs after winning the Vet A class a few times when I was 50. Haven't ridden since - and 10 years later, I'm practically a vegetable. I regret that decision very much. Don't ever stop riding if you can still do it!
I mer the Hurricane at the Toronto motorcycle show when I was 13. He autographed a 1980 (or 79?) YZ250 pamphlet with his picture on the cover. That was before TH-cam, or even seeing VHS of motocross. Living in Canada there was zero TV coverage for motocross. I just read every dirt bike magazine and brochure on the planet and loved Hannah the same way my dad must have loved the Lone Ranger when he was a kid. When they came out on VHS and DVD I finally got to see what the hype was for real, though never in person. I love hearing him talk now. He seemed like a genuine guy when signing autographs. With all the lightning bolts and 70s rock star hair he was the persona of cool. Every picture of him roosting out of a berm or hanging off the bike in the air was like a masterpiece of DaVinci or Rembrandt to me. Damn me where that autograph brochure went to I should have had it framed and wish it was still in my possession. I remember a column he wrote, in Dirt Bike Rider perhaps. He admitted he did not get good starts and suggested going to the outside of the first corner to avoid pile ups. I got stuck behind a big pile up in the first moto as he described. I remembered his advice and pulled in to a far outside gate in the second moto. A pile up occurred and I got around it with a great start. I got a 4 th out of 30 or so riders. It was the only supercross I ever rode at a small fair. I did race a lot of motocross. I was never a champ but kind of felt like one that night and give a little nod to the Hurricane for that finish.
There is only one Hurricane! It was so fun to watch him race the man hauled ass. I wish he would spend some time in the booth as we really need a fresh voice in motocross.
78 or 79 Nationals at Lakewood our local boy Boo Stitcher on a KTM (junk back then) pulled the holeshot and disappeared for 30 minutes. Hannah reeled him in and passed him on the last lap. Hannah afterwards- "Who the fuck is that guy?!"😂
Loved him or hate him, he was very dominant. I remember in a couple of interviews he admitted he didn't think he could beat anyone on the circuit in a fist fight. He did say he wouldn't back down from a fight either. One of the traits that made him great because he was fearless. The man won nationals in three different classes (125,250,500)and supercross in the same season. (1977).
Those guys were tough as nails!! I grew up watching Johnson and Ward Battle it out. I fully agree about the GP guys, those guys had crap suspensions and half the horse power and made those Bikes sing, on a track that slightly resembled a groomed cow pasture!!

Had his poster on my wall in 82. I rode a Suzuki RM80.. Broc and Barnett were my idols since they were yellow..Bob was the man to beat. He's a winner..look at his shirt.Proof.
Was fortunate enough to have met and enjoyed his stories and witnessed one of the best ever to ride motocross. Got to be there to see him ride the piss out of that Suzuki 125 at Unadilla. Always loved his stories about how he could be a good secretary typing if he only had to type curse words.
Bob Hannah started racing late compared to the riders of today compared to the motor homed child racers of today. He was welding pipes at DG and racing on the weekends on a borrowed bike. No daddy paying for everything. He would have Keith Mccarthy drop him off 10 miles out of town heading to a race and he would run the rest of the way in. He would also not use the ac in the hotel room. Everything he did and earned was by his own efforts.
But we could also afford our own bikes as kids back then. When 10 times the bikes were sole in the USA compared to today,---it found the best talent. If the bikes were that expensive back in the 70's, how many of the best riders in world would, who graced our magazines and tracks, would have never been able to get into the sport? Any whose Dad did not have a bike shop. So today, I am pretty sure we missed a lot of talent from the 900,000 who can not buy a new bike every year or two,--like I did making $1.00 part time at my Dad's store. 76 KD125, 78 YZ100, 79 YZ 125, before I graduated HS.
For anyone out there that wants to hear Hannah talk about his career, there is a podcast called 'whiskey throttle' and it's a great interview along with being a great podcast in general.
I got to meet Bob when he had an office in Ketchum Idaho. I had a potential product that was protective gear for dirtbike use. In a very kind way he said it’s damn difficult to get the racers to wear protective gear other than boots and a helmet. 😂
It is morbidly ironic that Bob remembers Gaylon Mosier's attitude saying "I am going to start training and win some of these." on the starting line. Gaylon Mosier passed away in 1980 while training on a bicycle, getting hit by a truck.

Love this interview I saw Hanna at Southwick back in 1988 nearing the end of his career, I’ll have to agree with him when he talks about the shape of the riders now compared to back then though I never raced motocross I liked Enduro’s and I noticed the courses are more designed for faster riders now compared to back in the day
Always loved watching Bob ride, he gave it all and wanted to win so bad. Bob would stay and visit with fans when everyone else was headed home. One of a kind, no one appreciated the fans like Hannah.
Why did Hannah say in many past interviews that he was jealous of other riders or hated the good riders because if they did better than him in a race they were taking money away from him, and he didn't like that.
He has got to be the most honest person on the planet! I could literally listen to him all day. Love it!

I never knew his age then but what I remember about him most was that old guy rode a bicycle daily distances that would break many younger men and rode a TT 350 Yamaha on trails better than many younger riders. I rode with him several times on trail rides and he was a tough dude.
I saw Hurricane Bob Hannah at the I believe the very first super bowl of motocross at the Los Angeles Colosseum when I was probably 13 yrs old. He was the first rider to jump across the giant woop-di_doo instead of riding through it. He rode the fastest and jumped the highest and he won the event. I'm 60 yrs old now and I still remember it. He just wanted to win.

This is cool, I was all about Hannah in 77, I was 14, had my 77 YZ250, DG swingarm I loved that bike, Saw Hannah and The Man race at Unadilla, like to hear more Hannah unfiltered 👍.........wish I had that bike in my collection

Hannah was my Motocross hero .. I have owned mostly Yamaha's in my life.. Saw him Live a few times at Red Bud in the late 1970's he mostly won. Marty Smith practically flew over the Top of me going over an uphill Jump during practice. I was on my 1978 Yamaha YZ-100-E and Marty Smith was on an RX-500 R.I.P. Marty and his wife ..
I still have a picture of him on a Yamaha wearing Scott Plastic MX Boots.I think that I cut this picture out of a Motocross Action Magazine that I subscribed to for years.I always loved reading Jodie's Box,The Shootouts and the articles on the Riders.Bob was right about The Legends of the 60's and 70's,Roger DeCoster,Joel Roberts and Heiki Miekola.I know that I spelled the last Ones name wrong it's been a looong time ago.These guys had to take it easy on the Bikes so the Bikes would finish the races.

I saw him race in 1976 at Rio Bravo in Houston, and he was just flying through the whoop section. After the race, his face was as red as a beet. LOL I bet he remembers that day for sure. It was like 100 degrees and 100% humidity. Most of the pros hated racing Texas in the summer. I grew up here. And yes, it is very very tough doing 30+ minute motos. 40+, hell no.

I like Hannah, I had the pleasure to meet Decoster on a plane ride from MCO to PHX, very cordial guy. My favorite guy to watch was James Stewart. I really thought he had the most physical riding style, he had great finesse and style but he looked to me like he would never tire out....my opinion. More videos with the Hurricane, I just subscribed - thank you!

Don't quit broski. I hung up the spurs after winning the Vet A class a few times when I was 50. Haven't ridden since - and 10 years later, I'm practically a vegetable. I regret that decision very much. Don't ever stop riding if you can still do it!
I mer the Hurricane at the Toronto motorcycle show when I was 13. He autographed a 1980 (or 79?) YZ250 pamphlet with his picture on the cover.
That was before TH-cam, or even seeing VHS of motocross. Living in Canada there was zero TV coverage for motocross.
I just read every dirt bike magazine and brochure on the planet and loved Hannah the same way my dad must have loved the Lone Ranger when he was a kid.
When they came out on VHS and DVD I finally got to see what the hype was for real, though never in person.
I love hearing him talk now. He seemed like a genuine guy when signing autographs. With all the lightning bolts and 70s rock star hair he was the persona of cool. Every picture of him roosting out of a berm or hanging off the bike in the air was like a masterpiece of DaVinci or Rembrandt to me.
Damn me where that autograph brochure went to I should have had it framed and wish it was still in my possession.
I remember a column he wrote, in Dirt Bike Rider perhaps. He admitted he did not get good starts and suggested going to the outside of the first corner to avoid pile ups. I got stuck behind a big pile up in the first moto as he described. I remembered his advice and pulled in to a far outside gate in the second moto. A pile up occurred and I got around it with a great start. I got a 4 th out of 30 or so riders. It was the only supercross I ever rode at a small fair. I did race a lot of motocross.
I was never a champ but kind of felt like one that night and give a little nod to the Hurricane for that finish.

In 1976 I painted a lightening bolt on my helmet......Bob was the man
78 or 79 Nationals at Lakewood our local boy Boo Stitcher on a KTM (junk back then) pulled the holeshot and disappeared for 30 minutes. Hannah reeled him in and passed him on the last lap. Hannah afterwards- "Who the fuck is that guy?!"😂
If only today's riders were as honest and straightforward as Hannah. Instead, they become the robots that their handlers expect...

Loved him or hate him, he was very dominant. I remember in a couple of interviews he admitted he didn't think he could beat anyone on the circuit in a fist fight. He did say he wouldn't back down from a fight either. One of the traits that made him great because he was fearless. The man won nationals in three different classes (125,250,500)and supercross in the same season. (1977).

Those guys were tough as nails!! I grew up watching Johnson and Ward Battle it out. I fully agree about the GP guys, those guys had crap suspensions and half the horse power and made those Bikes sing, on a track that slightly resembled a groomed cow pasture!!

Hahahah! Irish badass!!!! He is absolutely right, riders from the 70's and 80's are bad to the bone and better than the weenies riding today. Racing was wild and crazy and no rider from today could touch Hannah and Roger Dee. I think I saw Bob at the 86 supercross. I hope Bob grabs an old works bike and does a riding video for us to see.

The first time I saw him race I thought holy crap who is that guy. He came up to Sears Point and blew everyone away.
Watching my childhood idol tells me years later that he was and still is The Man. Funny when you are a kid and just know something chances are you are right. A kids perspective see’s thru the BS and see’s the real person! Major respect for Bob.
Had his poster on my wall in 82. I rode a Suzuki RM80.. Broc and Barnett were my idols since they were yellow..Bob was the man to beat. He's a winner..look at his shirt.Proof.
Secession SC, Bob took his jersey off and autographed it for my sister. We still have it to this day, I think that was around 1986.

Was fortunate enough to have met and enjoyed his stories and witnessed one of the best ever to ride motocross. Got to be there to see him ride the piss out of that Suzuki 125 at Unadilla. Always loved his stories about how he could be a good secretary typing if he only had to type curse words.
Bob Hannah started racing late compared to the riders of today compared to the motor homed child racers of today. He was welding pipes at DG and racing on the weekends on a borrowed bike. No daddy paying for everything. He would have Keith Mccarthy drop him off 10 miles out of town heading to a race and he would run the rest of the way in. He would also not use the ac in the hotel room. Everything he did and earned was by his own efforts.
But we could also afford our own bikes as kids back then. When 10 times the bikes were sole in the USA compared to today,---it found the best talent. If the bikes were that expensive back in the 70's, how many of the best riders in world would, who graced our magazines and tracks, would have never been able to get into the sport?
Any whose Dad did not have a bike shop. So today, I am pretty sure we missed a lot of talent from the 900,000 who can not buy a new bike every year or two,--like I did making $1.00 part time at my Dad's store. 76 KD125, 78 YZ100, 79 YZ 125, before I graduated HS.

I got to meet Bob when he had an office in Ketchum Idaho. I had a potential product that was protective gear for dirtbike use. In a very kind way he said it’s damn difficult to get the racers to wear protective gear other than boots and a helmet. 😂
Youve got to go through the AMA and the Team Owners. And the top promoters like Feld, etc. That's how Leatt did the neck braces.
It is morbidly ironic that Bob remembers Gaylon Mosier's attitude saying "I am going to start training and win some of these." on the starting line.
Gaylon Mosier passed away in 1980 while training on a bicycle, getting hit by a truck.
And I suspect Mike Bell died on his bicycle with a heart attack after getting the jab(s).

Love this interview I saw Hanna at Southwick back in 1988 nearing the end of his career, I’ll have to agree with him when he talks about the shape of the riders now compared to back then though I never raced motocross I liked Enduro’s and I noticed the courses are more designed for faster riders now compared to back in the day
Always loved watching Bob ride, he gave it all and wanted to win so bad. Bob would stay and visit with fans when everyone else was headed home. One of a kind, no one appreciated the fans like Hannah.

Why did Hannah say in many past interviews that he was jealous of other riders or hated the good riders because if they did better than him in a race they were taking money away from him, and he didn't like that.
