Great video, this is good to remember to double check the patterns mesurement before to cut in your fabric.

Great advice to write down any changes made to the pattern or sewing process! I do the same when cooking recipes. Never rely on memory!

Your advice is so true! I hated the idea of making a toile but you can really get tired of carefully sewing something that doesn't fit you, ha, ha. Also so true about writing things down instead of thinking you'll remember. That top you are wearing is just perfect - all those toiles paid off!

Thank you for this, I have been watching your videos and getting ready to sew, you get straight to the point and are so sensible , just what a returner (after many years) needs. The old new machine will have its service soon and I have pattern ,fabric and thread ready to go once that has happened and I have finished work. I will not be able to afford making too many mistakes so I am concentrating hard on all your tips. I have gone from a size 22 to a 12 not deliberately I may add and a new wardrobe is out of the question. I am finding your videos really clear and no fancy gadgets required so thank you for sharing all that you do it is very much appreciated.

Very good tips. I was getting quite discouraged with fit. I had made a sloper but wasn’t having much success. I took it and measured it places you mentioned. I thought you have your measurements and you’ve put in seam allowance so only possible thing missing could be ease. It was supposed to have seam included but I found that was not the case. Once I started adding the ease things have started fitting so much better. So it’s very important to measure yourself & the pattern.

Excellent, to the point video! It is only through you and other TH-cam sewists that I've gained enough confidence to figure out and make the pattern adjustments I need. The last time I sewed for myself, all I needed to do was shorten back waist or skirt lengths. That was a much smaller me. And yeah, while I thought "Big4" patterns were design for someone 5'6", it turns out that we have to grow in all bone structure, including height, if we get heavier. Phooey.

Oops, it looks like my comment disappeared. With brain fog, though, I might just not have actually clicked post. 😂
I wanted to say I wish I knew all this when I first started sewing, even though fitting is such a long and tedious process. Your video was so detailed and you gave ALL the information! Sometimes people will share parts of the puzzle, but here you really laid it all out which is so helpful. ❤
I also wish I knew that even going by measurements can be deceptive because of ease! I've found I need to go down a full size on most patterns (even vintage ones!) because of the excessive ease. It's such a shame when you've put in all this time and effort just to look like you're wearing your sister's hand-me-downs. 😂

I am on a bit of a time crunch for an event so I decided to use a pattern that I had done before for the underskirt. I failed to write down my changes on the apattern and omg it was a headscratcher! Luckily, I figured it out. But it slowed me down quite a bit.
I am really bad about documenting my changes because, I always think that I will remember or it will be obvious.

Being able to make full bust adjustments changed my life. I used to buy patterns by my bust measurement, and the shoulders would hang off me and just look terrible. It really makes a difference when you know how to fit properly. Thanks for another terrific video!

Me too! I’ve also found that a lot of the patterns I like don’t have bust darts, so learning to add them has also been an amazing skill and extended my world of patterns

I've been putting of a make from fear of it not fitting. I'm going to follow your steps and see what I can do. It's rayon, I may look in the clearance section to see if I can find a similar fabric to do the mock ups. Hope your week is going better! 🌻🍄

Another helpful video, as usual. Taking accurate body and pattern measurements is so important. I've taken the "that looks about right" approach a few times and they were disasterous failures. You'd think I would have learned the first time around . . . but, of course, I didn't. Nothing quite like learning the hard way. Just so you'll know -- you are so dang funny, Claire!

I’ve been trying to put a cowl into a T shape dress and because the fabric is very slinky and drapey I had to make a toile in a similar fabric to make sure I’m achieving the desired drape - I’d never have made a toile til I watched your videos 😊

Hi Claire, first of all thank you for all your fabulous content. Thanks to you I'm able to take on more challenging projects. May I ask a very pattern specific question though? I'm trying to make Simplicity 8910 but it's getting away from me. First of all the sleeves are too tight for my fat biceps, and after much trying, I've abandoned the sleeves. There are darts or pleats everywhere! Then I had to do a full bust adjustment, and by some miracle the bodice fits me beautifully now. Well, the miracle came in the form of your video obviously. I was just about to cut the skirt when I realised that the changes I made to the bodice would affect the skirt....Doh! So long story short, I somehow need to add about 5 inches to the front skirt waistline! But there's pleats and pockets and I'm at a loss. Any thoughts? Maybe repurposing the fabric would be the best option!
