I just noticed, here he instantly jumps to comfort her when she's crying... Just what he didn't do in See I'm Smiling, when she said that she can't understand how he can stand there when she's crying and do nothing at all! Ouch.
I knew this song before I ever heard it for the first time. And, when I finally did, I realized someone else, from another place and time, had been eavesdropping and taking notes. Today, 40 years after those moments, the hairs of my arms stand on end.
This song is why I'm Team Jamie- the lines like "Back into battle" "Hold on, clip these wings" "Little more glue everytime that it breaks" "And she sends out battalions to claim it and blow it apart" Really shows how the marriage falling apart is also Cathy's part. Their relationship ended long before she admitted it, and though cheating is NEVER justified and I'm not trying to justify it, Jamie felt he was suffocating.
I think Jamie is more sympathetic in reverse, which, now that I think about it, might be why Cathy is the more sympathetic character. This, in a nutshell, is the genius of Brown. If the stories where synchronized, it would be just another boring love story. The converging then diverging allows the listener to relate differently.
I agree that it's impossible to only look at one side in any relationship. Jamie had great success with his writing and Kathy did not with her acting. She keeps lashing out at him and trying to hold him back which leads to him cheating on her. Jamie is hurting too, he's been so successful and Kathy doesn't even want to hear about it. Jason Robert Brown is true genius
Actually it's in "Say No to This", but yeah, you're right. Lin-Manuel even called the composer of The Last Five Years to ask for his permission to reference this song in Hamilton.
I'm so stupid I originally thought he was talking to their kid when they had split up. And he was wanting to go back with her again. This makes me so sad now.😭😭😭😭
Ok so I’m sure I’ll be hated, but I became Jamie. Until then, I sympathized with Cathy only and didn’t understand. But now this is my favorite song bc I lived it. Its absolutely wrong for Jamie to cheat, as it was with me. It wasn’t on purpose- the marriage was failing. They grew apart. I remember thinking in my marriage (which happened too fast), is this the happiest it’s gonna get? Which wasn’t very happy. That’s a devastating recognition, but still you try to do the right thing bc you love and respect your partner. Eventually, especially with distance, someone or something happens. Sneaking around and it feels shameful, but once it feels like love with the other person, the choices are eternal misery but monogamy, or breaking your vows and following your heart, hurting someone that you love so badly. It’s an impossible choice. Subconsciously, you want to get caught so you become careless. Bc the guilt eats you up inside- can’t eat or sleep. So when you’re found out- it feels strangely like a relief, but you carry the guilt. Long and so personal but I really get this song
hmmmm, I was just introduced to the musical by my best friend. I'm not sure where I stand yet, but so far, what I've found is that the failing of their relationship is on both their shoulders. It is 100% Jamie's mistake to cheat, and it's not okay. You can never justify it. But I don't know yet if its fair for me to refer to him as an asshole of person when I haven't done enough analyzing. What he did was definatley assholeish though.
That's what I love about this musical. It is obviously both their faults and the story shows that so gentle and good. Plus the different beginnings (one starts at the end and goes backwards) and timelines let it end in this goodbye-scene, which is the beginning as well as the end. Just heartbreaking but not too cheesy.
@byrde09 if you ever wanna know where a song comes in just look up the lyrics to a musical and it has them all in order. this is the second to last song and comes after i can do better than that
so the character Jamie cheats on his wife Cathy and is telling this other chick he loves her while still being married and he still isn't an ahole? how would you feel if your husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend cheated on you? just a thought
I pity Jamie, because as the successful one, of course there's more of a chance he's going to do be the one to do something like this. Cathy is sad so often because she's so unsuccessful. All she has going for her is Jamie so of course she clings. I don't justify his cheating, I wish he'd left her before it got that far. But they're both to blame for the end of the marriage. He just had the opportunity to do the true thing that broke it. Also I still think he's a dick in See I'm Smiling. He doesn't have to go to all those fucking parties.
Cathy wasn't innocent either but that doesn't change the fact that he's a jerk. Sorry, but this is why so many marriages fail- you cannot justify cheating in a marriage. It's never ok. And the song shows that he knows that what he's doing is wrong and he's consciously choosing to do it anyway. Cathy may not be innocent but he is the true villain in this story.
Skavoc Exactly. It's a good lesson for real life marriage too. If you ever have a problem with your spouse and try to make out villains and antagonists, you'll never communicate properly to understand and solve the issues at hand, as what happened to Jamie and Cathy.
o.o are my eyes messing with me or is that dude on the cover hugh lorrie? Probably not but couldn't hurt to ask - maybe it's just the way his face is turned to the side making it look like him o.o;
I just noticed, here he instantly jumps to comfort her when she's crying... Just what he didn't do in See I'm Smiling, when she said that she can't understand how he can stand there when she's crying and do nothing at all! Ouch.
I kind of love that they don't finish the first stanza. "Cathy is waiting... Just let that sink in. this isn't Cathy."

It takes a really good song to make me sympathize with a guy who cheated on his wife.
This song and the one after it never fails to turn me into an emotional wreck.

THIS VERSION'S "EVERYONE BLEEDS" IM NUTTING

YES YES YES THIS
3:34-5:09 So many chills

This is one of the most incredible songs I have ever heard. It perfectly captures that feeling.
The only line where I can't tolerate him is the "take me inside you line" 😭
+miajessaggirl oh no, even worse is "I promise I won't lie to you" immediately after.
God. Sounds like ever high school boy in existence
the line in hamilton is a homage to this
Casper Charlesworth What line specifically?
@@pjm9275 the very last one in say no to this, "nobody needs to know"
I'm here cuz Hamilton
Norbert Leo Butz nails the emotion in this song. *sniff*
The Reynolds Pamphlet from Hamilton ends with the exact same line, and almost in the same tune as this. agh. :(
Actually it's in "Say No to This", but yeah, you're right. Lin-Manuel even called the composer of The Last Five Years to ask for his permission to reference this song in Hamilton.
That's what I meant.
Kerah Bundy also in Turn it off from the book of mormon
Kerah Bundy say no to this took elements from this song, Lin Manuel Miranda said so in the Permissions for Hamilton
Jason Robert Brown is a genius
I liked immediately because of three things, The cast, Jason Robert Brown, and TaraBelle223's description.
I'm checking this out from the Hamilton reference. Now I want to see it. The song is beautiful, musically.
I'm so stupid I originally thought he was talking to their kid when they had split up. And he was wanting to go back with her again. This makes me so sad now.😭😭😭😭

Long and so personal but I really get this song
I come here to listen to this everytime I do something "nobody needs to know" about 😂
After listening to this song about 6 times. I just got the description...
Breaks my heart
Loves the description for the video ha

S O?
NOBODY NEEDS T O
K N O W
That description is my life! xD
love this song
Im single af
If I would be cheating on my wife, I wouldn't be singing this ... it's such a turn down
"if a miracle would happen" wasn't a song, then I might not want to hate Jamie

nice description ahaha
Okay, but doesn't anyone else find it weird that he calls her "kid"? It comes off kinda creepy imo
This. Kills. Me.

+Brittany McVey It's very attractive to see a "villain" and a "hero" but the truth is that they are both damaged people.
Skavoc Exactly. It's a good lesson for real life marriage too. If you ever have a problem with your spouse and try to make out villains and antagonists, you'll never communicate properly to understand and solve the issues at hand, as what happened to Jamie and Cathy.
@Enigma3650 Hahaha I totally see it - but it's Norbert Leo Butz :)
o.o are my eyes messing with me or is that dude on the cover hugh lorrie? Probably not but couldn't hurt to ask - maybe it's just the way his face is turned to the side making it look like him o.o;
Enigma3650 it's Norbert Leo Butz (I respond, 6 years later)
