  • This is the Archimedes screw turbine part 2. Come along with me to test the concept of this turbine in the water with no load applied. This video only happened because of the comments and support I have received from you! Please share your thoughts on how I can improve this design for the future

    My suggestion is you shoud close the pipe bacause the water is coming out of the turbine

    also, and just a suggestion i'm no renewable energy professional or anything just and enthusiast, but maybe printing instead of a plate more like a cone shape almost so it can funnel pressured/forced water into the archimedes screw?

    Instead of a flat faceplate, have you thought of making it more like a chute or funnel to guide more water into the screw?

      I have thought off this and there was another comment for this as well. I think it's a good idea to test but in my (power on a stick) video I found it had minimal effects. I will have to try and test this more to see if it can work for this application.

    would've loved seeing the turbine in that rapid section of the river that looked like a mini waterfall (last place you had placed it) but with the front plate on just to see if it would make more progress, I thought the front plate would work for sure since it looked like it would force all the water near the Archimedes screw making the generator work more efficient...

      I agree, that plate does seem to work well at channeling the water into it. It just also creates that extra surface area for water to act against. In the next video, I think with the 60t pulley it should gain a bit more rpms.

    yeah, i got suggestions. first, dude, get flyfishing waders. incorporate mounts for two rebar spikes to pierce the stream bed and hold it in place. attach a shackle to the unit and a rope with a screw-into-the-ground dog run anchor-knotted on shore so the thing can't get to far if it all goes sideways. possible floaties for the unit and for you. a helmet because you are way too eager to walk on moss covered rocks which are always slippery. a waterproof jogging case for your phone [keys n id] to put on your arm, a bluetooth ear/mic and give someone your 'find-my-iphone-share-location' so they can later find your body in naragansett bay. get a gopro type cam. a length of tubing to hold your eyeglasses around your neck, hi-viz-paracord to safety tie everything you might drop. find a friend/colleague slightly less crazy than yourself as an assistant/rescuer/cinematographer.
    as for the turbine; i mentions safety shackle and streambed piles, a cone to direct more water gently in [think bournoulli], instead of that plate that acts as a dam. you got proper bearing on the spindle? the pitch of the screw probably has an optimized water volume/velocity. is there an e-z mount cover for the screw - maybe some gently curved plexiglass so you can still see the internals - washed w rain-x. wd-40? i'm just over in 413, if you're in new england, you can't be more than a mile from a running stream. 👍. before you reprint anything, look around home center stores for 4" pvc pipe, mounting, plumbing etc parts that already exist.

    Just from my observations on youtube, this style of turbine is really inefficient and as other comments suggested, you absolutely need to have it completely sealed with as little space between the rotor and the casing as possible so that the water is forced through.
    Another general tip with all water turbines is that you will get more force/pressure/power out of it the more "head" that you have (vertical distance the water has to drop through a pipe to get to the turbine) because it's just like how the deeper that you dive down in water, the more pressure there is from all the weight of the water pushing down on you from above. When you just put a turbine into some free flowing water there is very little pressure because the water just hits it, bounces off, and flows other directions around it. You need to find a steep spot and put in as much pipe as you can going downhill and put the turbine at the bottom of the pipe.

    Use gravity to your advantage and make a way to divert water to fall down into it and flow away again after, would be good around a small waterfall for example.

      I've thought about this but either need large diameter pipe or alot of head. I think the next project aligns better with this suggestion, Stay tuned!

    There are quite a few micro hydro designs out there. For a turbine design the pipe would need to closed. For an open system in a stream a water wheel would probably be better. How much slope do you have to work with?

      There isn't much slope at this spot I tested at. I think I can find a bit more up stream, I'll just need to figure out how to get my self there. I agree a simple water wheel may work pretty well here

    It might be more efficient to have a higher pitched screw. Emphasis on might as I'm not an engineer.

    The fact that your structure does not rotate is not because its top is covered. This cone-shaped structure needs to be longer and the water must travel further on the cylinders to produce more torque. If you look at similar ones, you will see this

    talk about completely misunderstanding everything...
    this isnt how they work. they arent a "propellor" or "water screw".
    think of them as a series of buckets descending a slope. it doesnt matter what angle it is as long as its not vertical or horizontal... 45 is best.
    the screw itself... the best pitch is 45 degrees.
    then rotate them WITH the pipe. so each flute creates a bucket, that constantly descends as the water falls down the slope. the junction of pipe and helix has to be water tight.
    its the water acting against the screw itself at right angles to the slope that creates the "torque"... you created little buckets down the slope, but each of those buckets is trying to "fall down the screw" as it also forms an inclined plane, a wedge, and creates a corresponding force sideways... the screw has no choice but to turn. if the pitch is too steep, you lose the possible number of "buckets" and the size of them... too fine, like you have here... and they just dont make any "turning effort". and so because it doesnt turn, no water "falls down the slope". a 45 degree helix gives the best combination but can be played around by say, 15 degrees either way...
    and as they only use the weight of water, they are really useless. theyre just like old school "overshot" water wheels, using none of the velocity. just weight over height. if you bend your brain a little you see how they are exactly the same, just on another axis. that being said, a waterwheels torque is based on radius, the distance from the axle, and the total weight of the water... here, its exactly the same... a really wide diameter screw works bets. you can make a really large diameter wheel for a given fall, and have lots of buckets, and lots of torque... a screw will always limit the torque available from a given amount of water, being on a much smaller radius.
    a trade off between diameter, the number of turns or "buckets", the slope, etc, etc...
    great at LIFTING water, as a pump. compact, reasonably efficient, reasonably simple...
    useless as a turbine.
    far better to waste time learning how reaction and impulse turbines work. then you might make something that works.
