    it’s cool to see an actual artist’s working sketchbooks as opposed to a bunch of curated ‘content’. really respect what you said about feeling pressured to stick with making one kind of image because that’s what people liked but choosing to move forward with your practice and find what you actually wanted to be doing instead.

    I feel like social media has pressured us artists into curating aesthetically pleasing sketchbook layouts which I think has really blemished the original purpose of a sketchbook. I LOVE the imperfections, scribbles, notes, math, etc. I think it says more about you than actual completed works. Your sketchbooks are absolutely beautiful and really enjoyed watching this!

    A lot of people don't realize that a sketchbook is a SKETCHbook. It's not something that needs to be "perfect" or every page to be a completed artwork. I think this video shows a more realistic approach to it as we can see those spontaneous bursts of energy and free sketches without the idea for it to be perfect or liked. Plus, I find beauty in pieces like this. It's what makes sketch and art really itself. It brings me comfort honestly, by sketching and making art without pressure or the idea for it to be good-looking. It's very free and very beautiful. As an artist myself, I have always struggled with sketchbooks and tried to make each page different and appealing but this gave more purpose to what a sketchbook is so I don't feel pressured so much to do so. Thank you for that :D

    i love this! i feel like there's a lot of pressure to make "aesthetically pleasing" sketchbooks and like sketchbooks are expected to be these little art galleries instead of places to explore and work ur ideas out. its refreshing to see artists with sketchbooks that look more like mine and (imho) more like sketchbooks should be!

    • @autchiu
      @autchiu  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      agree times a million!!! all that pressure is what causes artists to feel like they cant draw often!!

    i really really love your thoughts behind "abandoned" sketchbooks because you're so right! sometimes it's better to leave things finished than to force yourself to work in a sketchbook that doesn't make you happy. i can't help but think that maybe in that way, it's "finished" rather than abandoned because its already served its purpose (´・ᴗ・ ` ) i absolutely love seeing your sketchbooks, they're so inspiring and filled with life! ♡♡ can't wait for your next video c:

    • @autchiu
      @autchiu  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      oh i love that way of thinking about it too!! from now on theyre not abandoned but finished in a different way! 🌸 thanks for watching and for the kindness, lovey! (´ε`*)

    i couldn’t agree more with your view on spending too much effort when it comes to making your sketchbooks “aesthetically pleasing”. i used to have that toxic mindset when i first got into drawing, and in the long run it just made making art feel like a chore rather than a hobby, if that makes sense. there’s nothing wrong with wanting to make your drawings look perfect and neat, but personally, it takes away the fun and mindless feeling when you’re too focused on making it look a certain way. when i stopped being so hard on myself with my art, i was picking up my pencil or pen way more and it became more enjoyable doing so instead of stressful.

    • @autchiu
      @autchiu  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yes yes yes exactly the same for me! definitely not a problem for those who work well with perfection, but for us messy artists, its so freeing to let go!

    only seven minutes in and this already has made me feel so much better abt my stuff, cause this feels so raw and upfront- i have a lot of sketchbooks i havent finished with empty pages in because i wanted every single thing left onto the paper to be absolutely stunning without any imperfections, and i couldnt (cant) let go of it. when watching other art things, everyone else's looked so awesome, i though i just fucking sucked at everything, because things were unfinished and/or not meeting my expectations (if I didn't like em, I'd rip them out, or just give up on drawing, and when I didn't, I'd just start a whole new book then give up on it later anyway). overall, i think this will be very enjoyable to watch. thanks for the video.

    I really like your use of colors and experimentation in your sketchbooks, I’m glad you experiment in all ways, and don’t just box yourself into one style like your art is more lose and scribbly at points but you also mention still exploring with art and learning new things!
    Which is awesome!
    The more I watch your sketchbook videos the more it mores me think how awesome your art would look in a zine. I feel like in fact your art is Taylor made for that as zines are all about art with raw scribbly authenticity and experimental vibes. If you haven’t yet, you should totally look into zines because even if it’s not something you’re interested in making I have a feeling you’ll like the type of art artists put into them.
    Overall though lovely sketchbook as always, your sketchbook videos usually give me my daily dose of color serotonin! 🥰🫶🏻

    I have been watching your video for over a year at list point and just wanted to say you inspire me so much. Most artists I see on the internet are so sanitized are you are one of the few that is not. I have always been a messy artists and I think most of the time the rules are meant to be broken anyways. Your art has emotion, feeling, just something that cant be named too it because its not stiff or just a rendering of photo or object. When ever I watch your videos I am reminded that my messy art is real and valid even if my proportions are off. I am sorry this was a ramble ive been meaning to type this for a long time

    There's nothing wrong with your sketch and block artwork. It's very important to have fun with your art. Just because something isn't conventional or traditional doesn't mean it isn't valuable to you. Picasso's art was considered different. "Jack the dripper" was known for throwing paint on his canvas. Salvador Dali painted time as melting clocks for Pete's sake. Tbh they all made art however they dang well pleased. I love your flowy line drawing style and you make me want to try my hand at something less concrete myself.

    I just started again creating art and I have very little interest right now to actually complete full artworks. I just want to scribble and sketch and do some studies. Your sketchbooks are so nice because you can really see that you don't pressure yourself too much. I see many sketchbooks from other artists and every single thing in there has to be perfect. It is refreshing hearing you talking about you want your art to be messy and not perfect

    i just want to say that your video really helped me. i was really into drawing when i was a child but lost my passion in my mid teens due to depression, from which i recovered but didn't regain my desire to make art so to speak. but the past few months i've been really feeling the urge to draw again, made some digital stuff and even bought a sketchbook. i turned to youtube for inspiration but a lot of it so curated or heavily focused on improvement, which is fair but just kinda makes me regret all the 'lost years' i could've been improving, you know. but your approach is what finally made me excited to go and draw something and figure it out and experiment and color it with highlighters and correction fluid like i used to. thank you! keep being the artist you are.

      this is wonderful to hear!! i hope you are able to continue finding a practice that suits you!! you gotta remember too, the years you werent spending "improving" were still filled with so many creative moments even if you werent physically drawing! even the most mundane moments eventually get funneled into our experiments and play and creativity! 🌟

    I so much prefer sketchbooks to the 'art books' you often see on social media. Show us your scribbles, and working through a concept, or weird colour combos, wonky art, and different materials you try out. Polished and beautiful art of course has its place, but for those of us who are not at that level, sketchbooks like this as much more realistic, and gives us permission to just play and learn and the reassurance that we will find our way, too.

    I cannot even explain to u how giddy this video made me feel and how much it inspired me. I was trying to push myself to draw all night in my sketchbook because I was really inspired but it was not going well and I was pushing and pushing and spending literal hours on pinterest and then on youtube, and now I came across your video and just...the way you LET yourself out of the "aesthetic" bind is so very inspiring, it is SO visible how much you enjoy just testing stuff out, doodling your favorite characters and ALLOWING yourself to move on from something you dont feel like finishing, be it a sketchbook or a drawing in it, KNOWING that its gonna help you if you just let it stay the way it is. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, as a fellow artist and somebody who loves sketchbooks I will definitely be coming back to this video when i need inspiration! Your work is beautiful!

    I love the way you use sketchbooks though!! Sometimes there's large pictures with colors and details, sometimes there's just lines -- all of it is a reflection of the artist in different moments. It's natural and has no flaw, in my view. I'm glad that's not impacted by the childish attitude that wishes to police how sketchbooks should be used or look like. Nobody has to draw in any particular way, or use any particular mediums, or follow any particular study technique. Creating whatever and whenever and however and wherever you like -- that's what matters.
    Another thing -- I love the way you use colors, and I also love those watercolors and markers!! Specifically in sketchbooks 4 & 5 of the year, they're so bright and neon-like, I'd really like to work with such colors. What brand were you using? :o (unless I missed/forgot the part of the video where you mentioned this fjdjdj)

    45:15 onwards... Mean comments re: waste of paper. Like why? I've always thought sketchbooks are meant to catalogue practice and sketches. People have such warped ideas what sketchbooks are (or should be) these days. Getting looser, finding style and expressing yourself all need some amount of rhythm and flow in the way you make marks and if you don't practice, how will you be able to get better? Sure, you're scribbling across two pages for one drawing, but would it be somehow better to draw four of those on a page four times the size? Strange. But I guess too many (non-artist or beginner artist) people think progress is always linear and if you know how to do one thing, you should always do that well even if you're practicing something else. 🤷
    Thanks for the flip through. It's always interesting to see how others use their books, how they approach and record things. And practice! 😂
    I really enjoy your colourful stuff, especially the coloured pencil ones (landscapes and scenery in particular). So inspiring, always makes me want to draw. Never been a fan of manga/anime style so harder for me to grasp all the thinking and work in those but wow, you do get a lot of images under your belt! That's always commendable. ❤️

    • @autchiu
      @autchiu  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      right?! better to use the paper than not at all due to the paralyzing fear that everything must be the greatest thing youve ever drawn!
      appreciate you greatly! thanks for watching!!

    No offense, but do you feel like you're wasting lots of papers on those abandoned sketchbook.
    Before i have lots of SB too , but regret when I'm not able to finished till the last page. One reason why i switch to loose paper when doing sketches.

      as someone else has commented, theyre a tool that served a purpose. even if its not what others would do in their own books, it served me through what i needed it to.
      i love that we all have our own practices and what works for me doesnt necessarily work for you. its a beautiful and diverse world
