Hey old friends and new friends! What LGBTQ+ role models, movies, books, shows etc. have really helped you and which are your current favourites? Looking forward to the recommendations and discussions :)
Please do a video on queer online dating and which dating apps work, which ones don't and whether it is better to find relationships online or not (because my psychologist says that most or all people only want hookups)
Hey! I don’t know if you saw, but Netflix created a documentary about a two old women love story called ‘A Secret Love’. It’s so genuine, heartwarming and touching. I highly recommend it 😚
“Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe” by Fannie Flagg is my favorite. I don’t recall even a kiss scene, but it is still the most sensual book I’ve read so far. They have a recipe for fried green tomatoes at the end of the book, we loved the book so much that fried green tomatoes with my girlfriend. There is also a movie based on the book.
Blue is the warmest color was my turning point too. I didn't know that there are so many girls like me. I'm shook 😦 Anyways, I recently watched "the miseducation of cameron post" and it was great.
Elisa and marcela... wow this movie transformed the way i looked at queer relationships, the love scenes showed so much raw passion,i cant watch any other love stories without being critic of the love scenes!
Alexis liked it, she thought it was a little slow but she liked the ending and how it was filmed especially! I (Lilian) wasn’t that swooned by it to be honest, mainly because I didn’t feel tension or chemistry between the two women and that’s always what makes or breaks it for me... but that’s a very personal thing that people perceive differently. I did like the last third of the film the best.
Alexis and Lilian Carol and mulholland drive are two of my favorites films. My friends were like “did you like Carol?? Wtf” so I do understand that maybe Portrait didn’t work for you also gypsy ive felt their chemistry. I wasn’t into French cinema so much before but now I’m more used to the rhythm they have. Lost and Delirious was one of my “first” movies lgtb related. Also GIA (and foxfire because Angelina’s fan) Missed you guys around here and I loved pretty much all your suggestions 💕
Love you guys! You're the only lesbian TH-camr's that I STILL watch. All the others have split or they are completely ridiculous. Thanks for keeping on with your show and various topics. Your show is always fresh and I look forward to watching it. Many good movies mentioned. Some I took note of to watch later and this thread list some as well. Keep doing you and doing life and bringing topics and discussions to the table! Keep up the good work!😘💕
Personal Faves/ Ones that helped me in my queer journey 🌈 Films: Desert Hearts, Losing Chase, Madchen In Uniform (1958 version), Between Two Women, The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls In Love, Tea With Mussolini (not a queer film but Lily Tomlin plays a lesbian Archaeologist) Books: Salt Water by Barbara Wilson, The Hours by Michael Cunningham, Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson, Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers by Lillian Faderman, Aimee and Jaguar by Erica Fischer, Oranges are not the only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson TH-camrs: Jade Fox, Mia Marion, Rose &Rosie, Amber's Closet, Astrid Ovalles, Jessica Kellgren-Fozard, Girl In Red, Emilia Fart
The first movie made of Anne Lister is called "The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister." Not too good but enjoyed listening the extra by Sue Perkins. Research great.
I'm new to this community (in the middle of this year I finally accepted that I'm bisexual) and I can't wait to meet the love of my life!! I'm 19 so I have time but I can't wait, I hope I have a relationship like yours!
You two just radiate a warmth and sincerity which makes you some of my most favourite people to watch on you tube. Love your videos and the authentic content!
I'm not LGBT but I'm pretty deep into the Internet culture: TH-camrs: Paige and Holly, Abby Howard, (both from Ontario!) Alayna Joy, (from Vancouver!) Rose and Rosie Music: Fletcher! I have the lyrics to the song "Princess" tattooed on my soul because of reasons. Books: Overshare book and documentary by Rose and Rosie, Girl
Hi girls, loved the video💓 about the tv series i recommend you Skam, which is actually a Norwegian tv series, it obviously has English subtitles even though a lot of countries have made remakes (i’m from italy so i watched the italian one too). It has four seasons and each one talks about a different character, so only the third one is lgbt related but it is so worth it. Also Pose is amazing❤️
binged gentleman jack after seeing it being recommended multiple times in the comments. love it!!! my fav lgbt movies/tv shows i would recommend are: Saving Face, Atypical, and Dickinson
Ones that helped me after I first came out - Author: Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle and Venus Envy); Music: Melissa Etheridge and Tracy Chapman; Movies: When Night is Falling, Wild Reeds, Go Fish and All Over Me. Current faves are - Music: LP, Ani Difranco and Kat Cunning; Movies: The Perfection; Web Series: Kontrol, Queering and These Thems.
Brandi Carlile has been a true role model for me. She's on her sixth studio album now, and though she doesn't specifically write LGBT+ music, she's a true advocate and a lovely person. Her style is generally described as country/Americana, which I'm usually not really into, but she is so diverse she never bores. I haven't seen any 'Survival Kit' videos talk about her yet and I think she deserves more representation! Thank you! :)
Have you seen “when the night is falling”? I think it’s really cute^^ awww that circus girl ❤️ Another great movie: “tell it to the bees” a bit more sad but it’s beautiful. As for books, I recommend Collette and her series about Claudine. Collette was a XIXth century French writer, open about her being bi, which was really revolutionary at that time. The books are something like diaries, describing everyday life and some romances to :D Btw could you maybe post a link to "the portrait of a lady on fire"? Can't find it anywhere online. You girls are great, I just started watching your channel because of quarantine and since then I'm like: aaaa, so cool! I appreciate your honesty and openness. Greetings from Poland to both of you!!!
Omg, you guys should all watch Elisa y Marcela on Netflix. It’s a spanish movie. And it is a MASTERPIECE. Like, really, WATCH it. I’ve cried my eyes out!!!!
Why I always end up liking everything you guys recommended. I followed your Spotify and like most of your music, now I'm watching Wentworth I actually really enjoy it (I never know it's an Australian show, I love Aus). So thank you for the good taste in pretty much lots of things :)
I was almost certain Lilian was going to mention Mädchen in Uniform. It might be the book of my life, though it was the film of my life first (the one made in 1958). I definitely recommend it!
I have a question for anyone and everyone who will read this: why is there a lack of support for LGBT+ youth (kids to young teens) and how can society change this?
I 100% agree there should be): but unfortunately there is still so much homophobia and transphobia, that giving lgbtq+ content to kids is seen as “wrong”. But if I had content like that as a kid, it would’ve saved me a lot of pain.
Yeah a lot of people see being a part of the community as an adult issue. And that like if a kid is apart of the community we aren't old enough or mature enough to "make that decision" even though none of us *chose* to be in the community
Upvote and subscribe for mentioning F*cking Amal (Show me love)! I'm an old and grumpy straight man, but this little movie warms my heart every time. Not just a nice lesbian movie, but one of the best teen/coming of age movies ever!
Killing Eve has been mentioned, but I'll add my vote. I love it! I agree that Mulholland Drive is an amazing film. Your recommendation of Carol is going to bring that one up near the top of my must watch list. The book (The Price of Salt) was great.
"When Night Is Falling," excellent movie, has symbolic depth and reflections on religion and mythology (not just lust/love). Everyone also needs to see "Desert Hearts" - an older film but a classic.
I've been binge watching for the last hour and I've loved your video topics and all the information and support that you bring. They have helped me a great deal and encouraged me so much personally.I will always continue to watch. Thank you so much.
'Disobedience'!! Got to love the Rachels'. And loved 'The Professor and the Wonder Women'. Based on their own lives, but the best is they are the reason of the rise of 'Wonderwoman', my favourite superhero 😊🤘 Brandi Carlisle's music and in South Africa, Karen Zoid. I read Carrol, but movie is better.
You might like (the musician) Tomberlin. She is really really great. Also, there is this quiet and beautiful movie (on Netflix) called „Lovesong“. Oh, and, for books: A few months ago I read „Paul takes the form of a mortal girl“ from Andrea Lawlor and I am still thinking about it.
If you want an amazing mlm slow burn romance I highly recommend Red, White, and Royal Blue!! It's more a coming of age novel, but everyone I know who's read it has loved it. It also really helped me when I was grappling with my own sexuality. And the author is coming out with a wlw novel in 2021 which I'm super excited for.
For younger people or those who like cartoons, the reboot of She-ra has plenty of representation and is quite a fun watch, it's on netflix. It's an action cartoon with a fun setting/story and great characters. (and one of the longest slowburns I could handle) Slight spoilers, but heres a small rundown of whats there 1. there is a non-binary side character (who is my favorite!) 2. there are two girls who are married to each other and are side characters who show up more in later seasons 3. one of the main characters could be trans 4. one of the main characters has two dads 5. There are a few crushes between a bunch of different people no matter the gender 6. (maybe major spoilers) but the main character has something going on! :D 7. I'm sure there is something that slipped my mind
I recommend to watch Sciamma's movies Tomboy and Water Lillies, they can't be excluded. Btw you both are adorable, so nice, and calm, I really enjoy watching you girls.
I'm 63. In my youth, when we were stateside, in a small town in NC, there were two "sisters" who lived together in a house nearby. All I ever heard was that they were sisters, but even as a child I could tell that was a cover story.. that was in the 1960s.
i haven't watched the video yet but i just know they're gonna mention the L Word at some point and Lilian is gonna talk about Tegan and Sara. I do have a question for you guys that's related to music. How do you get to the front row at a concert?? Is it just getting to the venue super early?? I wanted to do that once but turns out people were at the venue for more than 12 hours waiting, and I just do not have the endurance for that. Any tips?
Haha if it’s a seated concert just try to get a front row ticket but for general admission I used to get there an hour before doors open and yes it takes a lot of patience and persistence and fighting with people who show up late and try to take your spot! 😄 so haven’t done it anymore in a while - lilian
In this days I'm in to " motherland: fort Salem " tv show , I don't know why but i just like this tv show a lot , and me too i love movie " call me by your name " the ending make me cry and the wired thing it's I don't cry .. it's so difficult to me to cry but i just cry .. love you guys ♡
@@AlexisLilian Please do one in celebrating pride during quarantine. Most of my immediate family is aware of my sexuality but they aren't really supportive or open to hearing about it, and I'm nervous about coming out to my dad because I want to but I'm nervous. If he doesn't take it well, living with him is going to be so awkward and make the environment more toxic and depressing to live in.
@@AlexisLilian last one (I promise) please do a video on the support (or lack thereof) that the LGBT+ youth (young children and teenagers) receives (or should be receiving) and what society should or can do in order to help the queer kids, because I know that young people who are questioning their sexualities do not really have a voice or avenue because most families dictate the idea/concept that heterosexuality is the end-all be all of life and relationships or they avoid the topic altogether. I do understand that certain religions and cultures come with morals and values but I think it is important for everyone to remain open minded and kids and teens should be given the opportunity to decide what they want for themselves and not be judged for how they are feeling. I know that anything to do with the LGBT+ community is controversial, and that knowing about it from a young age could influence some people, but I believe that this is something everyone needs to know about so that people of any age can understand and feel comfortable with themselves. I would like to hear your thoughts on the topic and I'm sorry if it doesn't make sense❤
Rubyfruit Jungle is a classic! I did allllll my 5th grade book reports on adult murder mystery books by her, and I'm pretty sure some had queer characters, too. I remember I censored my book reports to make them sound more like kids books so my teacher wouldn't tell me to read something different, hahaha.
I've come across your channel weeks ago and have been binge watching since! Thank you for the fantastic content, girls! Two of my all time favorites. TV shows: "Lip Service", two seasons of what is considered the British answer to The L World (which I adored, as well). Movies: "Freeheld" with Ellen Page and Julianne Moore, a heartbreaking masterpiece, imho. Lilian, I'm a Naomi Watts' fan as well and I watched all the worthy moments 😄 of Gipsy (which I didn't like either) here on TH-cam. Another one with the wonderful Julianne Moore is "The kids are all right" from Lisa Cholodenko who also directed another one I loved, 1998 "High Art". Big love from an Italian in Berlin ❤️
Ohh Lip service! i binged that so fast that i already forgot about it haha! And I looove Julianne Moore as well but the storyline in the kids aren’t alright annoyed me a bit, but still nice to see something that wasn’t the usual lesbian love story ;) greetings back, wish i was in berlin right now, my whole family is there at the moment. - Lilian
@@AlexisLilian I'm a devoted to Naomi and Julianne so everything with them in it goes under my scrutiny 😁 I wish I had known your channel when you girls were here, and as much as I love Berlin, Canada is on the short list of places I'd love to be, as well. Thank you for replying, it meant a lot especially because I'm sure this is my first comment ever on a YT channel. But the theme was just calling me hahaha.
My faves: (books: under the udala trees + a little life + cmbyn + less) (music: MUNA + king princess + wilhelmine) (film: cmbyn, carol, brokeback mountain) (tv: killing eve, SKAM)
You guys need to see "Feel good" on Netflix. Also, here is a youtube mini series from my native Poland which is really good and recently went viral all over the world: th-cam.com/video/5tvUobbVJJI/w-d-xo.html Tegan and Sara have an instagram "show" now during the quarantine, every Thursday, it's called "where does the good grow" and it's basically the two of them chatting for an hour :)
one of my favorite LGBT movie is, The secret diary of Anne Lister, i have been to Shibden Hall which is the place they own and its so beautiful and romantic in UK, my favorite place LOL WHO LIKE THIS MOVIE THUMBS UP
If this can help anyone out there......A film that seems to b difficult to get hold of is called "Deserts Hearts" set in 50' s America about a straight(?) Older woman who falls for a younger woman. If u can get it, it ticks a lot of boxes, it's also a book called Desert of the heart I believe. There's also a UK tv drama called " portrait of a marriage" worth a look.Made in the 90's but set in the 20's about Vita Sackville West & her lesbian relationship with Viola. As for Woman on Fire.....an arty, dull lesbian film. Killing Eve is super smart. We all love it here in uk. Stay safe, the virus won ' t last forever 🇬🇧🇬🇧🏳️🌈🏳️🌈👍👍❤❤😁😁
Troye Sivan is my favorite and I love him and all his songs with all my heart 💓. Do you guys know that before becoming singer, he was a youtuber too???
The beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so here is my subjective and incomplete list, not a top: Portrait of a lady on fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu), Blue is the warmest color (La vie d'Adèle), Carol, Call me by your name, The Handmainden, Reaching for the moon, Summertime (La belle saison), Kiss me (Kyss mig), Tell it to the bees and Clouds of Sils Maria.
And here I am, scrolling to find other people in the comments who think that Alexis and Lilian have to watch and enjoy Gentleman Jack series. The first season was wrapped last year, and I couldn't wait to see the next season. 2021, maybe? Anybody from GJ here? 🎩🗝
I was a big fan of Buffy back in middle school (years 6-8), and a fan of Xena. Thing is that I couldn't click with how Xena would get so brash and over the top. I could relate much more to Gabrielle, her being that combination of sensitive and strong. How she could hold her own in a fight, but if everyone was broad brushing animosity and going all swords & sorcery, Gabrielle was the one who often knew how to step in the middle, and find a peaceful and amicable compromise. Xena also introduced me to Victoria Pratt, who I crushed on through Xena, Cleopatra 2525, Mutant X, and XenaCon videos. I've been really into the Berlanti shows (and this interest goes back through the Arrowverse, Jack & Bobby, Everwood, and Dawson's Creek). While it's great that Supergirl has a trans hero (played by a trans actress) and the goodbye between Alex (Supergirl's adoptive sister) and Maggie Sawyer was steamy af, Batwoman (at least during the Ruby Rose run) and Legends of Tomorrow are my favorites. Berlanti's Arrowverse in general has had many LGBTQ+ actors, and Legends just mixes queerness in with the off the wall plot lines (It's been compared to Dr. Who). Sara and Ava are such a great a couple, Captain Cold came out through an alt-world self, and I'm not sure if there's a gender identity that John Constantine isn't attracted to. Saving Hope is another great show for LGBTQ+ storylines Not to mentions that it takes place in Ontario (and is how I learned the slang term "keener") three core cast members were out be the end of their respective runs, and patient-by-patient storylines covered things like people taking political asylum because their country persecuted gays, some women who grew up in an orthodox Jewish community, and one outing another (making for social pariahs and disownment) raised friendships to just dissolve until they meet again later in life. Then there was "Can You Hear Me Knocking?" which particularly hits home for me. A high school football coach gets critically hurt in an on-field accident, passes, and through one of the lead surgeons (who becomes a medium in the first season) we find out that the coach was mtf, and was just starting to transition (over the moon after seeing how beautiful her ghost was). Last, (little mention) is the Librarians episode "The Eternal Question". In sort of a James Bond/Inidiana Jones/Aspie fusion, these canonical librarians weren't supposed to have LTR's, because they're supposed to dedicate their lives to the librarian vocation (Finn and Eve breaking the rules). There's an episode where we such a sensual relationship beginning between Cassandra and this Spanish American vampiress, Cassandra had to leave and continue her duty, but I held out hope that Estrella would return. They had so much chemistry together. It was like when Nena and Kim Wilde perform together.
Hey old friends and new friends! What LGBTQ+ role models, movies, books, shows etc. have really helped you and which are your current favourites? Looking forward to the recommendations and discussions :)

Watch gentle man jack it’s amazing it has highs and lows and is very realistic of its time as it is based on a real lesbian woman, amazing series!!🤍🤍
Rose and Rosie! The queens. Hhahaa. Kristen McKenzie and Steph LeClair, and Paige and Holly i think are canadian couple vloggers as well.
we need a second part of this video after you watch portrait....

Thank you guy! I was running out of shows to watch... 😄 Btw I really liked Feel Good on Netflix!
I’d love to see “blue is the warmest collour” but I’m blind and can’t find it anywhere with audio description
have u guys watch netflix original "the half of it"?
that was a great one i think
You might like (the musician) Tomberlin. She is really really great. Also, there is this quiet and beautiful movie (on Netflix) called „Lovesong“. Oh, and, for books: A few months ago I read „Paul takes the form of a mortal girl“ from Andrea Lawlor and I am still thinking about it.
The handmaiden is great
It's in 1900s in korea about a japanese and a korean woman
If you want an amazing mlm slow burn romance I highly recommend Red, White, and Royal Blue!! It's more a coming of age novel, but everyone I know who's read it has loved it. It also really helped me when I was grappling with my own sexuality. And the author is coming out with a wlw novel in 2021 which I'm super excited for.
Ouu nice, thanks for the recommendation! Will check it out 😊
Lolll at the flippant disregard of king princess and kiyoko
For younger people or those who like cartoons, the reboot of She-ra has plenty of representation and is quite a fun watch, it's on netflix. It's an action cartoon with a fun setting/story and great characters. (and one of the longest slowburns I could handle)
Slight spoilers, but heres a small rundown of whats there
1. there is a non-binary side character (who is my favorite!)
2. there are two girls who are married to each other and are side characters who show up more in later seasons
3. one of the main characters could be trans
4. one of the main characters has two dads
5. There are a few crushes between a bunch of different people no matter the gender
6. (maybe major spoilers) but the main character has something going on! :D
7. I'm sure there is something that slipped my mind
WENTWORTH!!! so underrated
Right?!
I watched Kiss Me 5 times !! My own life changer. Magical movie.
Awesome recommendations thank you! For TH-camrs I definitely recommend Keara Graves and Georgia Bridgers. Keara also does covers and sounds amazing
You should check out the BBC TV version of 'Tipping the Velvet', it's excellent
Early squad!!🏳️🌈🏳️🌈❤❤Please post more during pride
We'll try! Put in your video requests so we can get inspired for content :)
I recently read "Rubyfruit Jungle" from Rita Mae Brown, and I loved it! Anne Lister's Diaries (= Gentleman Jack)/ a lesbian in the early 19. century.
You guys should read Carol the book! It's amazing! A little different from the movie and it's beautiful.
I'm pretty old, almost 50 yrs, but I love Melissa Etheridge for her talented and honest song writing and music!
Ahh skam!! So good!
You guys need to see "Feel good" on Netflix.
Also, here is a youtube mini series from my native Poland which is really good and recently went viral all over the world: th-cam.com/video/5tvUobbVJJI/w-d-xo.html
Tegan and Sara have an instagram "show" now during the quarantine, every Thursday, it's called "where does the good grow" and it's basically the two of them chatting for an hour :)
Ian at Simpawtico dog training was a substitute teacher for me in high school. What a surreal shout out to see here! 😂
What!!! Hahaha that’s amazing. He’s great!
@@AlexisLilian Yeah he is!
TV shows to watch: Queer as Folk and The Rosie O’Donnell show (way funnier than Ellen) ✌🏻
Oscar and the wolf is a nice band, I also really liked the series Wtfock season 3, Skam France season 6 and Feel good by Mae martin :)
feel good on netflix was one of my fav quarantine watches
one of my favorite LGBT movie is, The secret diary of Anne Lister, i have been to Shibden Hall which is the place they own and its so beautiful and romantic in UK, my favorite place LOL
WHO LIKE THIS MOVIE THUMBS UP
Don't forget the gentleman jack as well
I loved carol , and the end put happy tears in my eyes .
Tash sultana is awesome although same feeling about the new songs :)
You've forgotten about Gia! Wonderful movie!
Ohhh true! One of Alexis’s favourites. And Angelina Jolie... 🔥🔥
❤️👍
Troye Sivan is my favorite and I love him and all his songs with all my heart 💓. Do you guys know that before becoming singer, he was a youtuber too???
Yes! 😊
Oh la belle saison ! Il est magnifique ce film ! Tellement lumineux, il faut le mettre en suggestions dans leur commentaire !
C'est vrai, c'est un très bon film.
You two are so cute and inspiring:) Watching these videos have helped me come out so thank you
I am a huge cmbyn fan, Lillian you will also probably like the novel the Song of Achilles if you like gay male literature 🙂
I see you like French movies so maybe you'd like some French artists as well. I personally love Hyphen Hypen and Suzane
You forgot Lip Service on Netflix! So good 😊
music; Brandi Carlile is awesome!
Lilian, if you want to read Italian, you can try with “Camere separate” by Piervittorio Tondelli
I'm really drawn to gay male culture too....I get it & feel you on that one Lilian. Must be more common than I imagined.
What’s up
Wentworth, Batwoman, Gentleman Jack are my favorites 💜 and movie "Monster" (2003)
Ohhh monster! Soo good. I bawled my eyes out - L
Alexis and Lilian me too! Have you guys seen Brokeback Mountain? 😫
And here I am, scrolling to find other people in the comments who think that Alexis and Lilian have to watch and enjoy Gentleman Jack series. The first season was wrapped last year, and I couldn't wait to see the next season. 2021, maybe? Anybody from GJ here? 🎩🗝
Room and romers has a good song called loving strangers
Awesome, thank you!
@@AlexisLilian You're very welcome.
