Wat Paknam Bhasi Charoen is a royal monastery of ordinary type third class, established during the middle Ayutthaya period, which spans between 1488 and 1629 making it more than 300 years old.
Situated on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Wat Paknam Bhasi Charoen has served as a spiritual center for the people of Thonburi, playing a vital role in local religious and cultural life.
Luang Phor Sod Chandasaro assumed the position of abbot at Wat Paknam Bhasi Charoen in 1916. His leadership marked a crucial period for the temple, transforming it into a prominent centre for Buddhists.
The Dhammakaya Thep Mongkol Buddha statue is truly impressive, with a meditation posture and a lotus finial. Its lap width spans an impressive 40 meters, and it reaches a towering height of 69 meters, equivalent to that of a 20-story building.
The statue is made of large copper and is adorned in a glittering golden-yellow colour, adding to its majestic appearance.
The design of the statue was based on the vision of Luang Phor Sod as the inspiration for the construction of this grand and significant Buddha image.
Construction of the Dhammakaya Thep Mongkol Buddha statue commenced on Saturday, March 4, 2017, and was successfully completed on Saturday, June 19, 2021.
The total cost for the construction of the statue amounted to 608 million baht is indicative of the substantial effort that went into creating this magnificent holy structure.
Phra Maha Chedi Maha Ratcha Mongkol has a square base with twelve wooden recesses. The architectural design seamlessly combines elements from both Rattanakosin and Lanna styles, creating a harmonious and beautiful structure. The chedi has an impressive height of approximately 80 meters, making it a prominent feature in the landscape.
Each floor of Phra Maha Chedi has different interesting things as follows:
• 1st floor, Mahachon Khunarom room.
It is a folk museum displaying various interesting appliances, including many antique items.
• 2nd floor, Dhammakaya Khunarom Room It is a space for practicing Dhamma, meditating, or holding various ceremonies and meetings.
• 3rd floor, Sangkha Khunarom room It is a museum of Somdej Phra Maha Ratchamangalajarn. Current Abbot of Wat Paknam displaying personal items and items received from students.
• 4th floor, Dhamma khunarom room. It is the room where golden images of various famous monks in the past like Luang Por Thongkham, Luang Por Sod is enshrined.
• 5th floor, Phuttha Khunarom room. It is the room where the world's first glass pagoda is enshrined. It is called "Phra Rattana Chedi Sri Maha Ratcha Mongkol" is a replica of Phra Rattana Chedi Maha Ratchamongkol.
It is made from emerald green glass and is intricately hand-carved. The glass pagoda is stacked over 800 levels, showcasing the craftsmanship and attention to detail in its construction which is a visually stunning and unique structure. The glass pagoda enshrines relics of the Lord Buddha and a golden Buddha image.
