@@TheLifeoftheZigs The bearings you installed had seals in both sides of them. Grease will fill up the cavity between them but not get into the bearings due to the inner seals being in place.
@@jacobraml3236no no no no. These are sealed not shielded bearings. Sealed bearings use rubber or plastic and are meant to keep out solid debris only. The pressure of the grease gun is more than enough to overcome the seal when pumping in new grease. Those bearings are literally designed for purposes like this. The seal will move out of the way letting in the grease. Do the experiment yourself. Take off a wheel remove the bearings, clean out all the grease in the bearings, reinstall the bearings, and then regrease. Then open up one of the seals and you will see your new grease inside of the bearing. Shielded bearings use a metal ring that completely seals everything in and out.
I've done this myself last year. Did not notice much of a difference myself. But then again, I mower is OLD and quite tired. Actually needs new tires and steering rebuilt.
Thanks for the video, it was very informative. Bushings, bearings, whatever, don't listen to critics about terminology as it was the process that matters and not the words. When installing spindle bearings, if you use a long socket to hit with you can tell easier if it's going in straight and it won't hurt the middle part. for the flat bearings grease is necessary for long life. The outer washers will keep dirt out. Thanks for the torque wrench measurements as I was curious how much effort it really saved. The true purpose of the mod is to save wearing out expensive parts down the road such as spindles, tires, and steering components. I really liked the mod to hold the grabber to pick up sticks and such, that was a great idea! Was it a cut piece of PVC?
@@TheNovaNorm appreciate the feed back! But yeah! I just used a 1.5” PVC pipe and cut an opening on the top and then drilled holes on the side and zip tied it to the lawn mower!
What you showed us at the beginning of the video....the items you called "bushings", were actually ball bearings. The wheels actually do have bushings. The wheels don't just "roll on grease".
@@research903 yes I realized I misspoke on the name of them after I posted the video. But they are enclosed bearings. However, I did grease the axel after I installed the wheel again.

They need to be manually greased during assembly. Their location outside of the shaft housing prevents grease from the inside from properly reaching them.

Should have removed the inside spindle bearings seals so the grease can access the bearings. Also feel you should have pregreased the poor man's bearing before install.
@@hansjansen5224 From the research I did the grease would reach the inside of the spindle bearings with how my mower set up. Also people did not recommend greasing the poor man’s bearings since they said it could cause dirt and debris buildup in the bearings. But we’ll see what happens!

Hi, you have to remove the inner seal on the wheel bearing to get it grease.
With my make and model you do not. The grease fitting is inside in between both the bearings so the grease fills all up in there.

I agree. I did it 2 months ago and notice little difference in ease of steering.
It's a good video. Just a note you put sealed bearings inside your hub. You don't grease those. You will overtime have to replace them however.

Nothing makes a lawn tractor steer better than adjusting front wheels so they are toe-in. The 2nd best method is to swap front tires to tri-ribs.
You must put grease on those lower roller bearings or you will be very lucky if they last a season. BTW- they are called LINEAR ROLLER BEARINGS.

That’s weird when I did this to my tractor. It was a night and day difference.
Yeah not sure why. But for the price it is, its definitely worth a shot on any lawn tractor!
