  • This year I climbed Ben Nevis via the CMD Arete route and now I can compare it to the Mountain Track (previously called the Tourist Track) route that I climbed last year.
The video includes route maps, place names, elevations and timings. I describe how the CMD Arete route feels compared to the vastly popular assent Mountain Track.
Both years I capture some stunning footage.
Can't decide which route to take? Watch this video to help you decide.
Already climbed Ben Nevis? See the other option here.
Let me know which route you think is best? Mountain Track or CMD Arete.
Please take care on the mountain. Book a guide if you feel you can not climb it safely. Please research what safety gear and clothing is best to take. Please wear appropiate boots and please check the summit weather forcast before setting off from the bottom. It is a BIG mountain and the weather can change for the worse during your climb.
PLEASE STAY SAFE ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Really loved the video. Spent the weekend on the mountain and used your video as homework. Well presented thank you. We had what must be one of the sunniest days on record. My wife was doing an ultra marathon to the summit and I was running around in support. Thanks again

    Very good indeed..
I liked the comparison between the 2 routes. Both enjoyable yet so different.
I found the tourist path a bit plane too.
Can't wait to try the other route V.soon.
Thanks very much for the info and advice.

thank you very much the detailed information about the track comparison that i think i will do CMD track instead of CIC to CMD(checked some video but seem not so easy to manage as seem so risky) and CMD to Ben Nevis also pretty although a bit longer.

Nice video, but next time you take a bearing point the red end of the arrow towards North and not South, or you might find yourself going 180deg in the wrong direction should you become completely disoriented in mist 😂

I just had to double check the footage. YES the video does show it is clearly wrong. But we didn’t get a chance to see the compass settle from its hanging position. Hopefully I wasn’t making a 180deg mistake! 🧐

I wasn’t being picky, I was just drawing attention to anyone reading the comments that it’s an easy mistake to make, and whilst the navigation on the ridge is fairly straightforward the descent from the summit in poor visibility calls for a critical bearing to be followed to avoid the dangers of Gardyloo and Five Finger gullies.

I noticed this myself an was immediately confused that the compass was facing north but we're looking at the north face so facing south. Phones and other electricals can mess up the compass direction too, just tested it and it jumps all over the place. So when filming the compass it must have had this affect because merely pointing the compass upwards doesn't change the direction 180 degrees so I think whatever you were recording with was the culprit

Is there another way to the CMD by heading up the tourist track then turning left at the Lochan & then making your way round to the CIC hut, then hiking up onto the ridge?

Hi Gordon. I’m sorry but I don’t know without doing my own research. I’ve only walked the Tourist track and the CMD as posted in this video. I don’t want to give advice that others may read that could potentially lead to an issue if it wasn’t correct. Good luck with your research and enjoy the climb if that’s what you’re planning.

Which route you liked best and why?

    • @CopperGravity

Gosh Tony, that’s like asking which is my favourite child!!!
Tourist route wins cos it was my first and easiest.
But CMD wins cos it was harder and had less people.
So I tell first timers or new hill walkers Tourist track, but more experienced hill walkers CMD.
