Ok... may I ask the same question I asked John (cause in a day of two, it may get lost in a barrage of other comments)?
So my question is packaging.... it was my understanding that vermicompost loses nutrients & bacteria as it loses moisture; so is it best that the home vermicomposter not seal up autumn & winter harvests for spring time use? What would be the best way to store your vermicompost then? And where can I get my hands on the types of bags he showed around the 44:00 mark?
@@deadfred821 I recommend keeping castings in a sturdy cardboard box with some paper on top to maintain moisture content.

I'm trying to make vermicompost and vermicomposting more popular and hope to build up a large farm (now is it a middle one). Thank you for your work, that people can learn from you. I'm in Lubbock Texas and don't know where to get worms
I got into worm farming because of the Texas Worm Ranch years ago . I use composted leaves and grass clippings for bedding and to feed my worms . I don't put food scaps into my worm bins , I put the food scraps in my compost piles , let the leaves , grass clippings and food scraps break down and then I feed it to my worms . My worms bins are in my home and I've never had any issues with bug's or smells using this method . I grow common milkweed plants to help the monarch butterfly population and I put the common milkweed seeds on top of my worm bins and they germinate very fast , 81% faster than water germination or if I put the seeds in topsoil or outside in my garden . I have seedling within a week . I use the top of my worm bins to germinate seeds , when the seedlings are big enough, I take the seedling out and plant them in a pot with a 100% worm castings , I got from my worm bins . Once the seeds germinated and I remove the seedlings, then I turn the worm bin by hand , turning by hand makes sure I won't hurt the worms .Then I feed the worms compost and water and plant more seeds on top of the worm bin . Then the cycle starts all over again.

@@catherinegrace2366 Your welcome . When you make soil with just leaves and worms , you are replicating the forest floor . That's what the forest does , the trees take up minerals from the ground and deposit them into the leaves. Then the leaves with the minerals in them fall to the ground . Then the worms eat the leaves , making worm castings . The minerals that the leaves have are now found in the worm castings. So in the home worm farm , you do the same thing . The leaves you feed the worms have minerals in them and when the worms eat the leaves and turn them into worm castings, the minerals are now found in your worm castings. Food does not belong in the home worm farm because the food will start to smell attracting flies and bugs . With feeding your worms leaves , the leaves will never start to smell . Leave the food scraps for your compost pile outside.

@@neverwinterfarms yes , outside l only compost leaves now . l don't put food in it , just leaves . l go around my neighborhood during the fall and pick the bagged fall leaves .
@@howard977 Hello, I disagree. I live in a small NYC apartment. I don't have the luxury of a patio - only three windowsills. I place all organic fruit and vegetable leftovers, brown paper, egg crates, any leaves or roots from my plants. My worms eat it all in a week. There is no smell. When I first started I did have some little flies flying around, but that all went away when I buried the food with enough soil which is easy to do. Also, don't overfeed them. One will learn to gouge how much food is enough/not enough. I now have very little waste. Stuff I can't feed my worms (onions, citrus, etc) goes to the city's composting program. It's not perfect but it works for me. I think one can get too caught up in being perfect. For me the point is to reduce waste and create a healthy ecosystem in my apartment. Someday I will have a yard and will be able to have access to grass and leaves.

Best video on vermi-composting I've seen! Being married into a family with a professor of Biochemistry, I've learned a tremendous amount about what defines a highly, organically based biologically active media vs a highly refined organic media and although its highly subjective based upon the parent materials, the most important ingredients are going to be a highly active and viable, beneficial fungal based colony, along with a diverse base of minerals, which is inherently based upon the parent materials. The bottom line is it doesn't matter whether the NPK, comes from a mined mineral base or a pigs butt, it's the bio structure of the media that makes the difference, because thats the way mother nature wants it. This Vermi-composting ranch has it down 'Pat'.
Actually some studies are reporting that worm castings has a relatively low level of NPK.
The point is that most soils have more than adequate amounts of PK and might need a bit of N, but practically all but the best soils are lacking in a robust microbial biome. Vermicompost is one of the best amendments that can provide that environment that doesn't just introduce new microbia that wasn't there before but promotes the growth of both its own and any other microbes native to that soil and surrounding environment.
I just got some red wigglers from this worm farm 3 weeks ago she is such a lovely lady and her farm smells like success and if you love the smell of great compost you know how amazing this smells. Thanks so much TX Worm Ranch the worms are doing great.

I put mowed grass on the perimeter of my veg square, and leaves go on top of the clay soil for winter to break down and feed the worms. I have more worms than ever in the past few years. I do not fertilize or spray anything.. I just keep it clean by pruning.

One of the things that I love about vermicompost is how balanced of a manure it is while not having to deal with some of the extra salts that can be in it like steer manure.
He isn't yelling at nobody. He is just a real good honest person with a great personality. He always seems positive and passes positive vibes around anyone he is talking to or willing to watch his videos. I dont watch all his video's as I'm just getting into vermiposting and he is one of my favorite vermiposting TH-cam hands down. He has alot of knowledge about living soil which I'm glad he takes the time to teach us people interested in it. If you don't like watching why watch and why even waste your time to complain. Find something else to spend energy on hopefully I'm a positive way. Life will be much better for yourselves over time

Hi John Iam from South Africa and ive started worm farming about 4 months ago after doing tons of research. One thing I picked up was that if you only feed the worms one type of food the castings are not as good as when feeding them different foods. Iam still learning and testing out my castings to see how they affect the growth and the fruit bairing of my fruits amd veggies. From my own experience certain foods makes the worms fatter and they look in a better condition than other foods but its all in the mix of thing one food source will not do your castings any good.

OMG! John, I didn't have a computer, or internet for such along time! I missed you so much! It truly is great to see you again, man!!!!!!!! My son and I are growing earthworms in 5 gallon buckets, him inside an apartment, and me outside. We are both having great success. Plus, a bunch of fun! We live in Tucson, Az. Needless to say, we have had to get a lot more buckets! Those little suckers love to reproduce, and they grow super-fast!!! Oh! and my gardens are kickin' butt!

I do Aeroponics and Soil growing. For the soil growing you have been a big help. I will be mentioning you in my next video.
John i use the 360 but i use it backwards from the recomended way. I put dry cardbord on the bottom trays and the feed the oldest tray on top so the extra moisture and microbes migrate down and is partially finished by the time the time it moves up to the top tray. It has improved the quality and quantity of castings. I also use 2 inch risers in the corners (i use extra pvc pipes) to allow O2 flow. I never get moisture from the tap because it is used by the bedding below priming it for the worms.

I got 1k reds from Texas Worm Ranch and couldn't be happier with these lil monsters. I live in Fort Worth and the heat was a issue ( I keep them under my back patio). I put frozen water bottles in the dirt two times a day and the temp is normally around 75 degrees . So many cocoons and lil baby worms. Can't wait till I really start vermicomposting on a larger scale now these bad boys are thriving. I highly recommend using Texas Worm Ranch for all your worm related needs.

I plant everything in pots. So for me, I buy soil, add perlite, and worm castings and plant whatever. Can't wait til it's my homemade castings instead of purchased ones.

I live in Dallas and attended a talk that Heather did at North Haven Gardens several years ago. I often thought about finding her ranch and stopping by to get worm castings and another worm bin. I loved getting to see it in this video! I will make a trip that way soon. It's only a 17 minute drive from my house. Also, I think that Swiss chard just loves Dallas. I have one that is almost waist high and those leaves are so huge that I never harvest more than one at a time. I love your videos John!

yeaph... i purchased worm "castings" from an "uncle f" site and purchased 10 pounds...the package took forever to show up, and what i received was less than 6 pounds and when i tried to make tea it was so sad...light murky water and not dark as i was expecting.... then i went to Home D...purchase a bag of 6 pounds of so call "worm casting"...well it is a mixture of peat moss with what looks like compost....so i am learning how to do my own...what it kills the deal with this people u are talking about is the shipping cost...expensive expensive....and i live in tx...boomer ...so hands on the how to make my own worm composting...end of the problem :)
I wonder if the package was intercepted and tampered with, to explain delay and quality. But then it was CV blooming time and mail earned it's name Snailmail. Did you ask them? It would be fair to offer them a chance to make good before you trash them on a highly viewed channel. Your attorney might agree... Your my go to garden man Haha I watch as many videos as I can to gain more knowledge an info than is for all your time an effort for those of us who want to be as organic as can be. My wife an I grow all our plants in bags but this year my peppers arnt doing so well an I cant figure out why all the leaves have fallen off except for the tops on some an others are turning brown any advice on what I could do I've added Epsom salt calcium an gipsom with no luck

Thanks for all your wonderful info John. I do have a question for you if you have the time to answer. I bought a large bale of dusted bedding for my dogs a few years ago. I think it's pine shavings (not chips, much thiner than chips). Do you think I can use it for mulch in my veggie garden?

I saw a graph from a professor lecturing on worm castings and it said like after harvesting the casting microbes grew a lot in number and by month five was even higher. It’s great the place in the video keeps the worm castings in the bed till an order shows up so it can keep getting better, but does anyone know of a method for people that may harvest castings due to a lack of room but still keep them to let the microbial content keep growing?
you can make a stacking bin yourself using stackable bins (that leave enough gap at the bottom for actual worms) and then holes placed for grawling through. There are also purchasable bins that stack in a few different brands. So then you start in the bottom with food, and when that is depleted, food is placed in the next bin up.. then keep going as tehre's usually five or so bins.. so they keep brewing on the bottom while they crawl up to find more food. That gives time for any babies and cocoons to also pop and also look for food too, for a cleaner product.
Is there a guy like you in Canada? I am in Ontario, and Need to Buy Some of these amazing products, like sea kelp, and humic acid, etc. I am new at lawn care, and am going to open a business strictly dealing with lawns. Your compost info is my biggest asset from this channel. I hope to have an edge over other lawncare companies using compost as part of my plans. But like I said I am new & need connections for supplies. All youtube responses are welcome.
