I didn't know where I was ordering the idle adjustment part from when I ordered it. I went back to your site and scrolled down and there you were. I watched you on U tube for information. Thanks for your help
You're welcome! Send me an email on orders@hivoltspares.com anytime if you have a KLX230 question. It's been a couple of years since I made this video and I've learnt a lot about these bikes since :)
I previously owned a KLX230 and never had any issues with the clutch, I did however replace the stock bars, with fat bars, bark busters and adjustable levers. I did a lot of road riding and so I replaced the oil myself. The original stock sprockets were also replaced with different one more for highway use. I never had any issues with adventure touring with luggage. The new KLX230 SM is better and we mostly used the same rack and accessories. The only issues we had was the seat suck after a few hours and the petrol tank is small. We have a support van so we dont have to carry fuel. I can cruse on both bikes at 100 km with out too many issues.
I’m happy you got the idle worked out. It is a major annoyance and completely unnecessary. Hopefully the new clutch will hold up for the long haul. Glad you can get back out on the dirt. That was a quick turnaround on the repair.
Yes, hoping that we've got the clutch all sorted for the long term. Stoked to have the bike back in two days, local contacts and goodwill always go a long way.
Haters that have never ridden anywhere outside of the same area they were born & raised are the clutch critics. You're amazing! The places you ride and the reasons you do it are truly inspiring. Thank you for the content.
Hi Miss BikeHedonia. I don't own a KLX. I just wanted to see what the problem was. It's so unusual for a new bike to do a clutch. So I guess it was not covered by warranty in this case ? I'm actually a fan of hydraulic clutches rather than cable clutches. I have a hydraulic clutch on my Husqvarna and it feels great. Anyway, it is always a pleasure to see someone so dedicated within a personal passion. In your case, travelling, adventures and bikes. I'm much the same. It brings us happiness and that makes us rich. 😁🍷
I have a hydraulic clutch on the ktm, spent a month riding through Indonesia topping it up with baby oil three times a day because the piston was leaking 🤣 My left boot smelled like freshly washed baby for a month 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks! I don't know where you're based... if you're in Thailand or Indonesia, your local dirtbike shop, or online with Lazada. Overseas, I would give ebay a try. But if you have trouble let me know, I can maybe get a local shop to ship to you, as I'm pretty sure these ones are made in Thailand.
@@BikeHedonia Thanks for the reply! I will order from Lazada. Glad you got your bike fixed up, it's a beauty! I'm in The U.S.. Loving my KLX except for the high idle. Glad I found your vid! Cheers!
Your explanation concerning the clutch is feasible, Grace. Hope the gremlins are gone from now on and your KLX is getting to know the mountain jungles. Don't mind the looks, as long as the bike is technically up to date. It doesn't have to look as gorgeous as a Panigale, it needs to function properly - get you up the mountains and back home again. Fingers crossed from Nürnberg/Germany, Günter
Hey Grace, I was wondering what clutch you used for your bike? State side it doesn’t seem like there really is any option available besides factory. Thank you
Great video and thank you for sharing. I have been having the same issue with the idle and this fix has me intrigued. What happened with the connector that goes to the original idle valve? I assume it's not connected to anything anymore. Did it trip the check engine light? Thanks!
Just tape up the connector with electrical tape or heat shrink and tuck it up out of the way. It's not connected to anything anymore. I'm not sure if this triggers the check engine light as I have removed the whole headlight/instrument panel assembly to make the bike lighter.
Awesome! I love this bike too. By the way, since I upgraded the clutch springs and put a longer clutch actuator arm on it, I haven't had any further clutch issues, so that's good! And if you need a manual idle adjustment screw for the variable idle, just let me know.
Loved your video, you are a refreshing wonderful gal and I did just get a 230klx 2023 and am not impressed with a number of things. Must say I’m old school XR 250/400 rider and thought this bike would be a good fit after retiring my immaculate last XR due to can’t fit with kickstarts anymore. Watched every video on TH-cam re Klx230 and so many issues are not addressed, working on doing a video of my own soon. Where you located if you don’t mind?
I am really happy with the bike now, but it sucks until you get fundamentals like the idle fixed. Now that it's been a year, i can say that the other best upgrades were a larger rear sprocket and tubliss tyre kit, along with light exhaust. I also just put together a kit to stiffen the front forks.
Would love the info on the idler also please, pisses me off as soon as you put into first the idle goes up automatically, changed front sprocket to 13 tooth and it’s better but still annoying.
My 2023 Klx230 s came from factory with 1.6 litres oil and was running super hot, only noticed it because I’ve owned many four stroke dirt bikes in my time and never seen a header run cherry red after less than a minute idle. Most of my bikes have been used and am used to diagnostic procedures, didn’t expect this on a new machine. Oil level appeared fine in sight window upon pickup but it was a cooler day and after you pay the ridiculous pdi fee you wouldn’t expect someone to put half a litre too much oil in the crankcase, (that’s like putting two extra litres in a car that calls for four litres which will definitively cause issues), I took videos of everything I did as I sucked 200 ml of oil out and was still above upper level in sight window, wtf.? Drained factory oil into graduated container and found 1.6 litres when manual states 1 litre oil without filter replacement and 1.1 with filter replacement. After 100 km changed oil and filter and the oil was black , will send to a lab for analysis, I suspect the oil reached critical temperatures that broke it down and may have adversely affected proper break in. My other concern is that unless the clutch is pulled in there is a very noisy rattle that I find not normal, although the clutch works as it should. Gas gauge is way off, speedometer is out by 5 kmphour, geared way too high for tight trails, have dropped to 13 tooth in front (now speedometer out by 9 kms per hour, oh well), it’s better but going to up the rear sprocket to 48 tooth.. Never got this for speed and never plan on anything over 80 maybe 90 km per hour, it’s nimble and forgiving and relatively light, perfect seat height, hope it proves a long lasting durable machine from Indonesia. Just a heads up on my opinion and observation of this bike, if a test ride were possible I most likely have kept looking because of tall gearing and rattling noise from clutch housing which may be normal for Kawasaki as it is my first, Honda,Suzuki,Yamaha many of these. Previous new machine was a Yamaha grizzly that had factory issue that two visits to dealer and that said no issues so I had to tear it down to resolve a caked grease issue in the driveline splines that was causing an annoying clunk in certain situations, not much faith in factory trained technicians. Hope this helps
@@randywilde9998 Thanks for your observations on your experience with the new 2023 bike. I've heard of plenty of people having the cherry red header issue under stock conditions, but the clutch rattle is new and not something I experienced. I do recommend upgrading the clutch springs as I think the stock ones are too soft; after I upgraded my clutch springs last year, I have never had an issue with the clutch again. However, I can't imagine what's causing that rattle. Not normal, unless it's a new 2023 thing, which I doubt. Hopefully what you've observed are all going to turn out to be teething issues, and the bones of the bike are good. Mine has taken a lot of punishment over the last year and I've been really happy with it.

Mine is a 2022. I can totally see that the high idle would not be problematic when riding faster on more open terrain, or basically doing anything which avoids really technical slow downhill sections. In fact it makes the bike feel perky af. But it's on the steep, technical, slow downhill sections that the high revving tries to kill you. Sounds like you have the right kind of kids around where you live! #klxnation ;)
Dear bikehedonia, I own a klx and I watch your videos as many others. Unfortunately the main disadvantage of the klx is the high idle. No matter how cold or warm the bike is the idle is high like revving it. This also happens when you pressing the clutch without turning the gas on. Especially on the downhill as you correctly said it is very dangerous and completely useless. It's not like Suzuki's v strom aid when you release the gas gently it gives you some gas but only from a standstill. I hate it so much that it is one strong reason to sell it. There is a solution that you can control the idle by turning a switch. But it can't solve it out entirely. I shall look for an ecu tuning just to make it better.
I paid 350 baht (about $10) for the manual idle screw plus new spring and it's totally fixed the problem - idles like a normal bike again. I cannot recommend enough. Here is a photo of the part I am referring to (manual idle screw on the left, old idle sensor on the right): www.bikehedonia.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/wp-16462285523996460218312370773086-scaled.jpg Let me know if you can't see the image

I got the KLX for off road, but can certainly see its virtue as an inner city commuter too. Versys will feel like an elephant by comparison but very comfortable on long trips. Good luck with it all.
Sounds like to me that after your explanations about the toasted clutch plate is that the clutch plate or clutch plate set was not properly machined or not installed properly at the Factory. The facts that you are an experienced rider and you would have clearly noticed if there was insufficient play in the cable (eg. gear changes not operating smoothly, not easily going into/out of gear), indicates to me that the toasted clutch plate had nothing to do with the clutch lever you replaced.
Perhaps. I don't think it was about the clutch lever, I think it was about the clutch springs being too weak for enduro. Apparently it's a fairly common problem and everybody upgrades the clutch springs and actuator, as I did. I haven't had a problem again. I also have a fleet of CRF300L for tours and I found the same problem: stock clutch set up just not strong enough for enduro. Super soft springs on those too.
