15 SPEEDRUNNING Techniques - Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy - (Guide/Showcase)

  • There are way too few Getting Over It tutorials, especially about the core game mechanics. Sure, there might be some old videos about the pull pogo when it first started gaining popularity, but why stop there? As I show you 15 speedrunning techniques in this video, my hope is that you will realize that there are so many interesting ways to climb the mountain: starting all the way from basic beginner swings to advanced horizontal stuff.

    It would have been more useful if you actually included the approximate path the mouse needs to follow in order to perform each movement. Still it was a good video

    • @KennyEvitt
      @KennyEvitt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's in the video - the game cursor is visible - if definitely a bit hard to see or follow at times. But you can also slow down the video too to better see (at least some of) them; that seemed to help me better see the path/motion of the mouse (cursor).

    • @KennyEvitt
      @KennyEvitt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I saw an example of 'mouse paths' and agree that they're pretty helpful; definitely easier to 'read' than the game cursor.

    • @clappv
      @clappv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I think this is a pretty interesting comment that can invoke some pretty interesting discussion about speedrunning this game. I definitely agree that the video would be better if I had included a mouse tracker that shows the path of the mouse as I perform the various techniques. We even have such a software that was specifically developed for this game and several others have used it. That's unfortunately something I didn't take into consideration when making this video.
      However, I wouldn't say a lack of mouse movement showcase makes it significantly harder to learn these techniques. Speaking from personal experience, I never consciously think of how I'm moving the mouse, since it's all muscle memory at this point. Even when I was learning new strategies, looking at someone's mouse movement and copying that directly has not been very beneficial for me personally. The reason for this is that successfully performing strategies and techniques is heavily dependent on how the character is positioned. This means that visual cues and pattern recognition becomes much more important since the movement in many areas can vary as a result.
      Also, due to how precisely the hammer is sometimes required to be moved, it wouldn't be practically possible to copy someone's mouse movement nor useful to approximately replicate it. Something else to consider as well is that most techniques are pretty much based on Swings, Simple Pogos and Simple Repositioning, meaning that the other ones are more or less a combination of those in different forms. Therefore, if you're capable of these easy techniques, then you can combine them into other techniques with muscle memory, without having to look at mouse trackers.

    • @KennyEvitt
      @KennyEvitt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@clappv Having played a bit more, I agree that the mouse tracker isn't that useful. But I still think it's useful for brand new players. I got pretty close to beating the game by moving (mostly) 'statically', i.e. slowly, deliberately, and stopping whenever possible between moves. I accidentally pogoed myself off the middle of the final tower (and fell, thru a spectacular cascade of mistaken flailing, all the way back to the very beginning).
      Afterwards, I decided to play around and practice 'dynamic' movement, i.e. continuous sequences of the basic moves, e.g. swings, pogos, and repositioning. The big obstacle seems to be the _precision_ that's required of each move so as to be successfully strung together into a long stretch of fluid movement thru the level. Maybe it'd be helpful for players trying to learn this to play other (modded) levels?
      Another thing I was practicing was 'repairing', i.e. 'fixing' mistakes. Something I've noticed that a lot of good/great players do is _recover_ from, e.g. a not-quite-right pogo somewhere. A big part of why this is hard is what you mentioned: "how the character is positioned". A specific aspect of this that I was practicing is something I think of as/like 'pogoing across Diogenes', e.g. if Diogenes is holding the hammer above-right, it's tricky to pull the hammer in, 'slide' it around the 'limiting circle' in the center of the character, and then down - and at the _right_ angle - to fluidly pogo at _just_ the right direction (and with the _right_ force/velocity).
      It's a very interesting hand/eye coordination puzzle!

    So much care and attention went into the making of this video and was honestly a treat to watch 👍
    Like you said in the description, there isn't many Getting Over It tutorials out there. Its honestly a shame because I think this game deserves the speedrunning attention seen by other games, but it all starts with tutorials like this trying to get new players into speedrunning, so keep it up man we need more people like you!

    • @clappv
      @clappv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Thank you a great deal for the kind words, I appreciate it a lot. I definitely agree about the game deserving more attention, but at the same time that would be hard to accomplish because of the difficult to understand game mechanics. I mean the game is already hard for someone trying to complete it once, and here are speedrunners that do things they have never seen before or even begun thinking about. Hopefully this tutorial helps someone out and even inspires someone else to make similar videos

    From what I understand, I think that the force you get in every movement is based on how far the hammer moved before hitting the ground. If you pogo off the ground, your hammer moved from waist, to ground. If you pull pogo from a ledge, your hammer moved from above you to wait to ground. The roughly 2x distance the hammer moves gives you way more acceleration.

      Anyone can beat this game as long as you don't have any severe hand injuries/disabilities that cause problems. If you haven't beaten the game yet, the majority of this video is too advanced and not suitiable nor useful for you. However, I guarantee that if you do simple pogos, simple repositioning and swings correctly on the various places on the map, then those three techniques are enough to beat the game as many times as one could want.
      This game is inherently and deliberately discouraging, because that was one of Bennetts main ideas. This applies to speedrunners aswell. I've gone months without beating my previous record and it can even take one year for some unfortunate speedrunners. For a first timer, it can take up to 50 hours, though the average is probably like 10. My point is that it's natural to feel discouraged, so just be patient and try to enjoy the game and I promise you'll get over it.

      @@KennyEvitt Blastbolt is like the only realistic current contender for sub 1. As much as I'd love to see a Summoning Salt video, it's not guaranteed since there haven't been any groundbreaking discoveries in the WR progression apart from slide skip. People have just gotten better at the game, so the video might be dull for a lot of people in that sense. Karl Jobst might make a video reporting about it though!

    • @clappv
      @clappv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think of it like this: A swing is performed by doing a circle with the mouse. A fast pogo is performed by having the hammer at a 45 degree angle and then moving the mouse either straight down or downwards diagonally depending on the circumstance. When the circle motion you use with your mouse is interrupted by moving it literally straight down or downwards diagonally, like in fast pogos, it becomes a pull pogo. One mistake people tend to do is emphasize the swing way too much. You only need to do a very tiny swinging motion, because the purpose of the swing part in pull pogos is to prevent the cauldron from colliding with the starting point. Although, the best way to learn is to invest the time to practice pull pogos until your muscle memory can automatically do them.

      Sensitivity is personal preference, but I think people in general find it easier to negative pull with a higher sensitivity. However, my opinion is that your sensitivity in particular is so low that it's hindering your potential. For comparison, 400dpi 50% ingame is seen as ridiculously low.

    How do you get so much height on a pull pogo? On mobile I don’t go half as high with a pull pogo

    • @clappv
      @clappv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You gotta initate a swing but then cancel it by pulling downwards vertically or diagonally, depending on which direction you're aiming for. This will convert that swing into a pogo and thus resulting in a pull pogo which gives much height.

      @@clappv yeah that’s exactly what I do, but it rarely ends up going as high

      @@RammsteinLover294 Try keeping the hammer less extended during the pull, it's fine to do during the swing, but try keeping it closer to the cauldron when you pull down. This will bring the cauldron closer to the object which will generate more velocity and therefore height. You might also just be doing it too slowly, idk. If you send me a video of your pull pogos I can review them and pinpoint the subtle mistakes.

    bruh someone show me how to do the negative pull.ive tried to do it but i couldnt do it

    • @clappv
      @clappv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It just comes down to a lot of practice. It's also not the most essential technique. Pull pogos are, for example, more important. I think people only really start getting the hang of negative pulls when they get close to sub 2, so it's definitely hard.
