John C. Reilly cast himSELF in this role. After I read the novel, going back at least five years, I heard that Reilly had purchased the film rights to 'The Sisters Brothers', and was going to play Eli Sisters. That's how much he loved the novel, and that's how strongly he felt about playing this role. It took a while to get it developed, but that's the level of passion & commitment it takes to get an adaptation done right. Reilly wasn't directing this film, but his little production company was clearly the motive force behind it.
Great review. I would agree 100%. I just watched it. I would have watched it again , and will. I did not know Riley was behind it. That guy's going places. Hope he makes some serious westerns. If you read this John. Blood meridian. You could play the physcopath character. Can't recall his name. Probably have to tone it down a bit for Hollywood.
I just watched this last night. It felt to me like Jake Gyllenhaal was the only one acting as if he knew he was in a western. The rest of the actors' dialogue sounded like they were just using their normal modern day speech.
Yeah... some of the things in the movie seemed out of place, time wise like some inventions were out of place and the language too. I'd say it was a good movie though.
Gotta say, I was pretty disappointed by the film. The trailer promoted wayyy more comedy, action and plot than the film actually had to offer. Yes, the performances were really good, and there were some good moments, but as someone who hasn't read the books, I never got behind the main characters as much as the film wanted me to and the convoluted way they chose to tell the story made it really hard to get invested. Hardly any of the jokes landed for me and there were entire segments that had no apparent reason to be there - I guess they were carryovers from the book, but again, I didn't read that and you I don't think you should have to in order to enjoy a movie. As for the meaning, I think it was more about what you hold on to on your journey, and why you do so instead of just letting things go. But even that aspect could have been explored a bit more.

John Riley was Eli
I really like John Riley in serous roles. His performances in, Gangs of New York, and the perfect Storm are stellar.
Joaquin Phoenix plays Charlie and John C. Reilly plays Eli
You couldn't bother to figure out what each actor's character name was? Not gonna finish this.
A shame you only talk about the performances and how much you like them rather than analyze the subtext of the character's actions.
The sequel
The sisters brothers cousins uncles
roommate?

Just watched it, it's already out here and it's really good. I agree with your review.

Definitely an underrated movie
Whatever happened to all that gold?
Put Adam on the schmoedown! He would be great
He doesn't live in LA so that might be a problem.
@@BarbaDjole Late To The Party doesn't and they still compete
More Chitwood on Collider, please!!!
Oh... did you adore it?
So you like a movie with a plot, I guess you hate Martin Scorsese's work pre The Departed then.
That's fucking stupid, what a dumb comment
loved this movie was like a slice of life western. people just see John C Rielly and expect comedy.
Are these two a couple ?
This movie is the next cult classic a la "Step Brothers," IMO.
My God..................A great.....Big one i just watched after a long time.....class acting....
0/10
- NOT Star Wars
Poor script with great actors. What a waste.

Not the best Audiard. I thoughthe failed with the Western genre.
