Mozart | Lacrimosa from Requiem in D minor | Theremin choir and piano

- I am delighted to share this transcription of the famous "Lacrimosa" from Mozart's Requiem, performed on the theremin - this very expressive electronic musical instrument that is played without even being touched...
I played the four voices from the original score: soprano, alto, tenor, bass. The piano featured here is a very old upright Pleyel, built in 1879. An old friend of mine, I grew up with it, as it was by my grandparents.
The video was shot in a charming village, lost somewhere in Corrèze, one of the most rural area in France, where my family comes from.

The theremin sounds so human... Not quite, but frighteningly close.
omg at the beginning i thought it was a woman
Like an alien singing, with a beautiful voice
The uncanny valley.
@@erseshe well maybe it’s a personal thing. It gives me the willies.
@@rojavida I get you. I find it hauntingly beautiful but I would not want to hear it when I'm all alone in a 200 year old house with a thunderstorm raging outside!
I’m low key obsessed with both theremins and the Lacrimosa...and I can’t believe I’m experiencing these two things combined. Sometimes the TH-cam algorithm truly smiles upon us.
The way you phrased that makes it sound like you think Lacrimosa is an instrument
SAME SAME SAME
@@powersettingsm7172 It rather is in a peculiar way; an "instrument" that expresses sorrow, tearful longing and despair as its name states.
Exactly what I thought when youtube suggested this to me
My roommate showed me this
"I am selling my Theremin, i have not touched it for years"
lol
Ha, ha, ha, ha. Thanks! I needed that laugh.
Eu compro, mas também não vou "tocar". 😄 Brasil. 30/08/2020

Cute. I almost asked if I could buy it! Haha!
This is the last straw. I'm learning how to play the theremin.
Impossible, the theremin learns to play you.
just make sure you invest in the right model.
i got one of those mini theremins from golem, and it's not really optimal for classical music.
it's too small, and when you try to increase the wavelength distance, you get interference between the 2 antenas.
@@vapidrabbit198 any suggestion?
@@pan3511 unfortunately not... maybe gregor has a recommendation somewhere.... or just check his videos and see which models he has.
@@Andy_Holmes I'm not surprised. ✔️
This instrument has the sound beetwen human vocal and violin, dont you think? 😄
I believe the inventor was a violinist, and wanted to emulate the sound of the instrument.
Rob Schofield He was a physicist and a cellist (Léon Theremin)😊
*This* instrument, yes.
But bear in mind that the tone/timbre/etc are all completely electronically (I.e. synthetically) produced. The motion of the hands are simply triggering signals in the “antennas”. With a different setting of the electronics it could be made to sound like, say, an electric guitar (or a chainsaw, or kettle drum, for that matter).
(Of course, none of this should be read as in anyway criticizing or minimizing the fantastic playing of the performer.)
Think so
@@NichaelCramer originally however, no, the sound was originally not something you could really change, this is only with newer models.
I love how the thérémin has such a vocal quality to it, almost like a cross between the string family and the human voice.
listen to this at 3am, in complete darkness with noise cancelling headphones, for free transportation to the next dimension
Exactly ❤
Stunning cinematography! I really appreciate all the thought that went into each of these shots, starting with the scenic landscape- simply lovely. The light through the stained glass! Magnifique. And the shadow of your hand transitioning to your actual hand at 1:36- chef’s kiss!
YEAH that transition was AMAZING!!!
I was impressed with the addition of the vintage upright piano. It was a nice touch.
Don’t you mean cinematography? I thought a filmography was just a collection of work by an artist.
Right?!
This is the most moving musical performance I’ve listened too in the longest time. The vibrato...the phrasing...the dynamics!😱
Mozart would approve. Such a beautiful instrument, played beautifully.
Not only a masterpiece of musicianship but of filmography as well. Not only is the Theremin difficult to master, but the exquisite video editing is exacting and demanding. You have indeed done a fantastic job of both of them.
Sounds like the voice of a haunted mosquito women it's honestly amazing
Ooh that one mosquito lady from one punch man
Or the mosquito lady from Gintama. 😆
You’re easily one of the best thereminists I’ve ever heard
ARE YOU KIDDING ME this video was both stunning to listen to & to watch!! You’re the coolest person!!!
I have never cried at music alone with no other context before. This got me in just under a few seconds. This is the most beautiful rendition of lacrimosa I have ever heard.
I came here by accident because I saw the word Lacrimosa and didn't see the rest of the title. And might I say as a hardcore Mozart fan, this was nice! I was impressed
What a huge undertaking with incredible results. I actually felt the suffering Mozart felt when he composed his final masterpiece.
Gregoire you are the best theremin player in the 21st century.
Mozart only wrote the orchestral introduction to the Lachrimosa. All of the rest is by Sussmayer.
@@metacarple yes, I think he got 8 bars in if I remember right. but, for some reason the benedictus is my fav part of the requiem and Mozart didn't compose it... the brass gets me every time and idk why
Outstanding.
I love how his videos we get to watch him grow and grow not only in his ability to play the Theremin, but in his age aswell. i think that is beautiful.
Wow...I'm speechless...the music, the film, the rendition...flawless...
Absolutely fantastic - I love that lush harmony of four theremins combined with the crisp sound of the Pleyel piano...only Gregoire could pull off such a perfection of sound and solo videography...THANKS!!!
The over damper piano sounds like a fortepiano. Beautiful.
Fortepiano, exactly! I was trying to think of the sound it produced.
It’s the Pleyel magic.
A birdcage action. It's closer to that early sound.
prolly some snob : "I can play the violin."
him : "well I can play air."
Super shalom 😇
Hehehe...good one:)
Just because you play the violin you're not a snob.
Coming from a piano player, I deeply respect violonists. They're really cool people most of the time :)
A theremin appears in a British tv advert, but I guess most viewers don’t know what it is. This is superb.
a choir of theremins sounds angelic & haunting at the same time!
Theremin sounds like a chorus of little and cutes ghosts
I thought at first that it was a choir! I am stupid!
Blessings and peace
Totally transcendental....
Never imagined theremin can sound like a living creature...
Its a blessed relief to see a young musician making music and facing the hardworking music really is! Bravo Gregoire !!! Ill never forget you
Magnifique interprétation.
Anyone who has ever tried to play a Theremin things knows how difficult this is. It takes a great ear and steady hands. Bravo!
This deserves a million views
The multiple theremins really give the sound some warmth. When it’s alone I don’t really care for the sound but together all of the slight microtonal differences between them make it sound like a string section coming together. Stunning!!!
Il n'y a aucun mots pour décrire cette merveille de volupté... Merci Grégoire
This was such a gift.
Amazing skills on Theremin: i could swear, I heard the first verse: "Lacrimosa dies illa". Amazing, Sir! Please don't stop playing and sharing!
This s believed to be the most difficult musial instrument ever. Huge congratulations just even for being one of the few people who managed to master it!
That was simply amazing.... I would never imagine Lacrimosa could be played so beautifully without vocals.... breathtaking....
What an awesome 5 twins!
The mastery of this instrument is incredible!!! The ability to perfectly create the notes you intend to make is astounding! You’ve truly mastered the Theremin
This is my new favourite arrangement of lacrimosa. Fantastic!
That was the cleanest sounding theremin that I've ever heard. Amazing!
Wow, sublime. The cinematography is brilliant. Bravo.
This is really an outstanding achievement, a musical, visual, and spiritual masterpiece ... un chef-d'œuvre musical, visuel et spirituel!
Extraordinaire !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! La précision et justesse absolue !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nuances, sensibilité, musicalité, phrasé.... Tout y est !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Originalité, créativité.................................
This is stunning and one of the best TH-cam suggestions I have had. Not only is it a beautiful piece of music but the idea of playing it this way is very imaginative. Thank you Mozart/TH-cam and the musician(s). Blessings and peace to all concerned
You (and your clones) are so beautiful and elegant it’s breathtaking.
Soberbio,fantástico,sublime,maravilloso,prodigioso,excelente, brillante y me quedo corto.Gracias
This is the most beautiful and in tune theremin playing I've ever heard
You are a great person for dong this. Thank you. I like the timbre of the instruments
Absolument magnifique
Quel musicien!
Mille fois bravo

Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
mastery of theremin in action .... OUTSTANDING
Theremin is a very difficult instrument to play in tune. I cannot imagine one harder. This is wonderful. Remarkable. Very beautiful.
Réellement merveilleux
Beautiful arrangement and lovely setting!
Incredibly haunting and beautiful rendition in every single sense.
It's cool to see such a rare instrument
Alors là... BRAVO ! Ayant pourtant toujours été hermétique au thérémin, je suis bluffé, épaté, soufflé et convaincu. Merci pour ce superbe arrangement et non moins superbe interprétation. Ainsi que de m'avoir fait changer d'avis.
My favorite work by Mozart. This is gorgeous.
Wow! How amazing to have quads, all boys, and all virtuosos on the one instrument :-o
My goodness, this was genius. I loved all the little details thrown in like the stained glass, chandelier, a close up of your hand. I also was impressed it was all memorized and you played not only all parts, but the piano as well. Was the piano choice intentional, or was it simply the one at the church?
Thank you! It was a long and difficult work! Interpretation, audio engineering, filmmaking... But it was rewarding to manage each single step of this music video.
The piano choice was intentional indeed. For its sentimental value and its charming tone. Very uneven, difficult to tune (you can notice that the tuning here is around 422Hz and not 440Hz - as the wooden frame can't bear to much tension). Visually as well, I find this inner mechanic from the late 19th century beautiful!
@@gblanctheremin totally stunning and the piano was beautiful. Having the front taken off was a genius idea
@@gblanctheremin It is called an "overdamped" or "birdcage" action due to the damperwires being in front of the hammers. Many instruments of the period had the design. A pain to service them.
@@gblanctheremin But nevertheless still a Pleyel ....
One of the best renditions I have ever heard.
I have never heard of this instrument before and I am fascinated!!! Beautiful!
*The Day the Orchestra Stood Still*
Theremins. Not just for cult films!!
👽 Beautiful & Spellbinding Bliss!
That pleyel Has the most beautiful sound that I've ever heard, I love their mellow sweet sound. The Theremin also sound great, awesome work!
It would be a true realization to have a piano that sound like that.
What a handsome bunch of quadruple brothers all playing theremin!! Their future wives are the luckiest women in the world!
Quintuple! You forgot the pianist! A great luck to have musician siblings!
I wish I had that many brothers and we were all that talented.
Please tell me people don’t really think there are five siblings?
I think this is only One “brother” here, recorded in layers

Envoûtant! Merci pour cet agréable moment.
I love the Mozart Requiem - and your version of Lacrimosa is absolutely awesome! 👏🏻👏🏻
I loved this rendition of a beloved work!
Well I dont know how you combine all the videos of yourself into one, but it's beautiful. I've never heard a theremin choir either, but I know the instrument is difficult to play. Thank you for such a beautiful performance.
I'm in love with this theremin!! ❤️❤️❤️ Sound like a angel from heaven!!
Holy crap... I've heard Theremin before but never like this. Amazing job.
Tout simplement excellent ! Bravo !!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
That is so beautiful. Thank you Gregoire.
This is the most celestial way to express celestial music writen by a celestial composer for some celetial beings in hevean.
YES a new upload! Absolutely haunting! I never knew that this piece would sound so good on theremin!
Brilliant! The theramin is perfectly suited for this piece.
It’s wonderful to have this and your other examples of the beautiful sound that can come from a theramin. Thank you for sharing your artistry!
Absolutely beautiful. ❤
One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen/heard.
Stunningly beautiful!
I'm in love, I'm playing it on repeat.
Learn something new everyday. Never heard or saw a Theremin played before. Loved this piece because of it.
Wow, just wow. Filmography, musicality, and cute too. The new triple threat.
A threat yes, but only to ugliness.
i literally can hear the words ...incredible. both sound and filming
Wow.. so moving.. I wasn't expecting this to be so beautiful.
so angelic transcription
Exquisite in every way. Thank you. Lovely choice of music.
Love those old pianos
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Its a masterpiece
Of all the wonderful music videos that have sprung up during this COVID pandemic, none deserves higher accolade than this beautiful rendition of Mozart’s haunting and heart wrenching lacrimosa. As the French would say, Magnefique! The music playing, interpretation, and arrangement, is obviously superb; but the video, Mon Dieu! The writing, the setting, the old family piano. The cinematography, with all that play with the lights and shadows. And the editing and the production, for 4 theremins and one piano, expertly made. Finally, who could have symbolized the Requiem for the Dead more poignantly than the star of the show, with his gangly silhouette and long, sinewy fingers? It is as if we have not heard from these talented artists, but rather, through the stained glass windows and the plastered wall, the voice of Mozart himself: “No, I didn’t finish the lacrimosa, but if I did, it would have sounded exactly like this.”
Fantastique !
You are AMAZING! Your playing is both haunting and beautiful. Thank you for sharing this wonderful performance.
Amazing and beautiful in both sound and vision.
Breathtaking!
This is so beautiful … the church, the scenery, the music; and very nice cinematography as well. I love the contrast of theremin and piano, they fit perfectly together! I'm looking forward to your next video, Grégoire :)
Super shalom 😇
Congratulations, I appreciated the respect you showed toward the original score. Mozart would not be angry!!
This is just perfect ... the combination of the piano and the theremin voices is amazing and the dynamics of Mozarts Lacrimosa have been captured perfectly. The fact that the piano is slightly out of tune does not hurt, it contributes to the atmosphere. Thanks a lot for another beautiful piece!
