My Grandfather would plant shoepeg corn and whipperwill peas together in a few rows. He never laid them by with fertilizer. The peas would supply the nitrogen that the corn needed the corn gave the peas something to climb on. Although the yield wasn't what the rest of the field was it was the way he learned it from his father and he was proud to keep the old tradition alive.

Growing up, we always planted pole beans and running butter beans in the corn. Didn't have to bend over to pick them. I found some running butter bean seed a couple years ago, and have started planting them again.
We use the King scratchers to cultivate Daddy's garden now. When I was young, we used 2 sets of sweeps on the front to cultivate. Everything was planted flat, or small furrow and the sweeps would add dirt as the plants grew.

We literally ate California #5s and hot water cornbread with every meal growing up, except for breakfast. But never inter-planted them with corn. That is a very old technique though, going back to Native Americans and their idea of The Three Sisters.

@@Jtwes I also am going to be on the look out for one of those dual planters. There has been very little truck patch type gardening in our region of the Ozarks. In the hills they grew small kitchen gardens. After 1964 no one in the Black River bottom land grew gardens. The Rice growers took over and the chemical drift from the crop dusters spraying those rice paddys killed garden plants. This had a effect on the availability to fine smaller implements and such.We also collect the old walking tractors and they are pretty scarce and the attachments for them even harder to find.

I adjusted mine to a steeper angle after using a few times. That really helped with clogging up with trash and weeds. This takes away from your width but your back plows will take care of that. I added a set of narrow 1” ? cultivator points to save wear on the leaf springs before I ever used. King also made a “rolled over” leaf spring style cultivators. Enjoying your videos
