Once and Always is More of the Same? The Power Rangers Netflix Special

  • Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Once and Always is the 30-year anniversary reunion special. It's no secret that it's a tribute to former Yellow Ranger Thuy Trang who played Trini Kwan. But as the franchise's tentpole celebration piece, does it do a good job on it's own as media meant for older fans? Or is it just more of the same?
    While this technically counts as a Once and Always review, I'd say it's closer to a Once and Always essay. I hope you enjoy my commentary on some of the requisite Power Rangers cringe and also some of the strengths in the special!
    RIP Thuy Trang
    RIP Jason David Frank

      Here's hoping that if they did another, they'd use the original suit (or even making a new one is fine) cause PR does practical well. CGI can be done well too, but PR should stick to what it knows if they can't turn in quality.

    For the Megazord I do agree with you, honestly the best way to describe it to me is that it has the detail and textures of Kingohger but it has the movements of Don Onitaijin when he is CGI 💀
    Outside of that, I think I enjoyed the special a lot, even though I don't have the biggest nostalgia for MMPR, I really liked how this special felt like an episode with just more breathing room, it was just nice to see basically a real reunion special on PR and I hope the success of this leads them to make more of those with other seasons.
    My only real gripe is the lack of a true climax imo, like, I felt the entire special was leading to a big exciting very well choreographed fight with the new rangers against Robo Rita or we would have the Megazord fight be the climax, but....none really did it, it felt like a really underwhelming whimper after so much buildup, I still think it would have been very cool to emphasize at least a bit of the anniversary aspect of the special by making it so that after destroying the machine, the rangers that Rita captured became their normal selves again and we had a little crossover to finish things off in a very cool way

    The special was so good, not going to say it's perfect but I enjoyed it and found that Minh was very relatable.
    Can't tell for certain with the OG cast who didn't return since it was questionable with Tommy and Jason BUT it's very obvious that Kimberly and Trini's clips are audio clips from old eps since they have very distinctive voices.
    Was anyone cutting onions? Minh seeing Trini's memories is what broke me.
    Simon actually responded to someone regarding the use of the Dino Megazord suit basically it was a just a matter of time and space which if they had both then they would've just made a new suit since the old ones have wear and tear and can break down after so many years.

    I liked the special. It did what needed to be done overall. Of course there were a few things that were jarring for me (some of the acting and CGI Megazord) but for the entire special? It was great!
    Now with that being said I dont think people realize the success of what this special means for the future of the brand. It’s top #10 in the United States and in multiple countries worldwide in Netflix so eyes are DEFINITELY on the brand which is what I hoped for.
    Catherine Sutherland (Kat) did an interview with Nakia Burrise (Tanya) stating how at the showing in California both the Netflix execs and Hasbro were quite surprised at how well the special did. This to me suggests 1) from a business perspective there’s money to be made with the brand (obviously) and 2) More money could quite potentially be put towards the brand to polish and give more quality content down the line.
    If Hasbro/EOne & Netflix were smart they’d capitalize off of this “Once & Always” buzz and release news on what’s to come in the next couple months because Cosmic Fury doesn’t come out until the end of this year. Since this special left off a semi tease this isn’t the last of Minh as the new yellow ranger we could see a full series of this same crew.
    Me personally? I’d much rather Hasbro and Netflix invest in this “Once & Always” motif and turn it into an anthology series like American Horror Story or Pokémon Generations but instead focus on a different team of rangers especially with the better writing (RPM, SPD, Dino Thunder, Timeforce, etc.) to flesh out the mythology, give an update or tie up loose ends. That’s wishful thinking but a guy can dream lol
    Lastly the success of “Once and Always” also rehashes an already known problem with the brand of PR and it’s the simple fact that the higher ups just simply don’t know what to do with this brand and really underestimate the potential they have. Hopefully now given the visible support and attention it still has over 30 years will warrant them to actually invest in it. Netflix was a good medium to test the waters instead of giving a full film and it fail (2017) but instead lay the groundwork & proper foundation to continue on.

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally agree on turning it into an anthology series! Though I hope the quality is much better than American Horror Story lol. A Batman Brave and the Bold kinda deal would be cool too.

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is actually an oversimplification. Yes, audio quality inconsistencies were present in Ninja Storm through about Dino Thunder (and maybe a bit during SPD). And overall the audio for the rest of the Disney era was for sure lower than the post-Zordon era. But this was never an issue for Neo-Saban onward. Disney did their ADR in New Zealand while Saban/Hasbro did ADR in the US. Dino Fury sounded fine, so this is an anomaly.

    Personally I thought it was pretty good, and while I know this is more of a celebration of MMPR, I feel like it shouldn't be treated that way.
    MMPR was the stepping stone to better content that everybody had grown up with. They seem to forget that it isn't just MMPR fans that are adults now, Disney fans are adults now too. Hell, some of the neo saban fans will be adults now.
    We should be celebrating the entire history of the show.

While I would have loved to see Tommy, Jason, and Kimberly actually back I've got to say that my only real complaint was how New Zealand looked nothing like Angel Grove and they didn't even really try to hide it and I'm hoping that CGI Zord scene was a wink and nod to the theatrical movie cause it looked bad! This needed Jason and Kimberly and thirty more minutes to add more fun mixes of 'where are they now' 'why does that make them argue with each other' and 'how do they use that to save the world.' No part was stronger than Billy and Zack going back and forth arguing. If you doubled that core cast, you could triple the dynamics and add some really really great payoffs in that final fight.

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  ปีที่แล้ว

      Getting actors and actresses back is sometimes just not possible. Even at the time they couldn't JDF back (as this was filmed while he was still alive). Also, the runtime was set by Netflix according to Simon Bennett (and they even ran over it). Rather than adding things, I think the special would've been stronger by removing elements such as the Megazord fight to give more time to focus on the characters.

  • @ZeltraxMillennium
    @ZeltraxMillennium ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Regarding the Megazord suit - It's very likely that Toei only has the one new suit for Daizyujin from GoBusters to Zenkaiger and they likely don't want a repeat of what happened back in Season 3 where Saban damaged the only Dairenoh & Won Tiger suits beyond repair/Hence why you never see those Zords again in team-ups.
    Simon Bennett did also confirm that they didn't have the largest sets to use to make a lunar surface but if they did have the extra budget, they definitely would have built a moon surface set & created a new Dino Megazord suit from scratch.
    But yeah, this special was incredible. I bawled my eyes out when Trini died/My fave of the OG cast.

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair on the reasoning, but they were happy to lend them the DaiZyujin suit for a ToyFair event before Beast Morphers came out. Granted it's not filming, but I feel like they'd have kept it under lock and key if they cared that much. Interesting to hear about the Dairenoh and Wontiger suits, I haven't heard that story personally and I'd love to read up on that! 😀
      I did see Pooki's tweets but it was after I made the video. That's all sound, his explanation, but then why have a megazord fight at all and not just cut it entirely? Or use a different set? I'd rather sacrifice the zord stuff for more time with the rangers.

    I absolutely loved this special, even if it did draw attention to a lot of questions about the show:
    Do people over here the Rangers calling out their dinosaur names? Yes
    Why is it considered an effective plan to kill the Rangers in their sleep before we come Rangers? Couldn't they have done that sooner?
    How come Trini's daughter isn't punished by the narrative when she ran over the putties? Isn't there a rule about not escalating a fight?
    Did the peace conference mean anything to the overall narrative? Yes, Zack eventually became a congressperson
    Did Kat and Tommy actually have JJ? Yes, they did and this made the show acknowledge that the characters aren't sexless
    What would happen when the putties actually attacked civilians and not the Rangers directly?

    They can make specials about 8-10 episodes long dedicated to:

    >Phantom Ranger Origins
    The line Trini's daughter said needed more visual weight. "Not a Ranger...." continues her training, delivers a heavy double blow then says "Not yet.....you mean!"
    The special was cheesy, but that was part of the original show. I think the editing was a huge problem, as much as direction and some of the writing.
    It felt more like it was originally written to be a 8-10 episode special, rather than a 1 hour special.

    You know, I fucking loved the bit where the monster duo gets stuck on the magnet way more than I should have. It's incredibly, lame, dumb, corny and cheesy as all hell, but it was _totally, through and through_ season 1 OG Power Rangers; I think it was that moment that made this feel like the original show more than any other moment in the whole special. I loved it.
    I found it especially funny how nonchalant Snizzard and Minotaur were about it. It was kinda like "Oh, bugger. Didn't see that coming. I wish somebody had told me I was going to get stuck on a magnet today when I woke up this morning. I'd have brought a book." You got that kinda vibe from them after it happened and it was hilarious.

    [Edited for spelling/grammar errors AFTER I saw your heart]
    Aside from the slight visual wonkiness of the CGI Megazord fight, this special was really great. Could it have been better in places, yeah absolutely, but from what Simon Bennett, David Yost (he was a consultant for the special), and the crew did for it, I think they really did some good homework. My favorite parts were Uncle Zack, Billy being an absolute BOSS of a CEO and a claim genius, and of course the introduction of Minh and her keeping the legacy of Trini’s character/Thuy Trang in general. Look, it still sucks that Thuy died so young and I don’t believe anyone will ever TRULY replace her legacy, not Aisha, not a VA for an animated version of Trini (if a PR cartoon EVER comes out), hell not even Comic Trini, but I sincerely loved what they did with Minh and I REALLY hope this isn’t the last we see of her.
    The special’s tone was honestly everything I wanted with a more mature take of MMPR for the screen, yes, really. Characters don’t feel as obnoxiously goody goody or sickeningly sweet as the original series since they’re actually able to breathe, argue and process actual mature personal steaks. Man I really hope this tone carries over for future Power Ranger stuff. Live action, animation, movies, it doesn’t matter to but please TRY keep it this way. We got some REALLY good here that some PR media like the OG movies could’ve used.
    Obviously, O&A could’ve been better, but what was there was ultimately great and I HOPE this brings some foresight into how the PR brand can change and grow going forward. And that part near the special’s end, Beautiful. RIP Thuy and Jason.
    “Crosses fingers for an action filled/well written and character driven animated series”
    Did I say that out loud? No, you didn’t read it. Go away since that’s obviously not gonna happen anytime soon.

      I liked that Minh learned off of Trini but wasn't a copy or trying to replace her. I see her like Aisha, she's her own character. In Minh's case, the only similarities are their last name and the suit they wear. The best way to honor the yellow ranger legacy is with a strong, well-written character donning the suit.

  • @J__T
    @J__T ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There were things I loved about the special and things that I didn't like. There were a few scenes that honestly didn't need to be there whatsoever. One really strange editing choice where we begin with the battle but then later on get the flashback for the set up of the battle. I get that it's for the whole Trini's death impact, but it seems weird to film an entire flashback sequence when it could have been a line like 'if only it was Zordon I brought back and not Rita' or something similar. I know for the special Adam and Aisha are stuck in the station and this anniversary is for Trini and the actor, but why is a new Yellow Ranger needed at all? There's a whole scene where Billy explains the difficulty of trying to get the Zords to work without the Yellow Ranger, but... Aisha is _right_ there! Unlike Rocky, Kat, and Adam, Aisha was _only_ Mighty Morphin' Yellow, so why not? Again, I know why the special was made. It just seems like they needed certain characters out of the way to make it make sense.
    Also, why wasn't Minh being trained? It seems pretty hypocritical of the originals to be like 'you're too young' when they too were in High School when they became rangers not to mention all the other newer rangers being Minh's age. I mean why is it wrong for Minh to be a ranger or even trained as a ranger when Billy, especially Billy, watched and sort of mentored Justin Stewart the Blue Turbo Ranger - who I remind you was like 12?
    The Megazord was meh. I'm more than fine with the summoning sequence and the assembly, but the fight was only slightly better than the 1995 fight. It felt overly cgi and lacked what made the Megazord fights feel epic. They couldn't've gotten a guy in mocap and then placed the cgi model over him like, say, the late Monty Oum was known for?
    Personally, while I do want more of the Mighty Morphin' to return, I'd like it to be actually mature. Like Teen rating. I don't mean cursing or blood or sex, no. I mean, in this special, the mature stuff was mentioning death, having an on-screen death, and one other. But nothing is talked about past 'how are we going to break the news to Trini's daughter' (while standing in an obvious set despite its house appearance it is more than clear that nobody actually lives there). That's it, there is no maturity past the same level as Sky Tate and his late father in SPD.
    My big problem with Minh is that I cannot tell if the actress is bad at acting or if the writing for her character is just that bad. She doesn't feel like a real teenager, she feels like a teenager you see in soap operas and Power Rangers. This is where I think the issue of her not being trained is the most obvious. She's clearly trained via martial arts and lives with a ranger full time whether her mom or Zack and yet she still feels like she can win alone. She's overly frustrating and if it wasn't for the returned rangers, I would have turned it off. Then we get the wonderful speech from Billy where he says as a ranger you don't or it's not always about destroying the monsters. I get where that could be going, but Billy, that's all you do! That is every episode of Power Rangers in short! That's literally how this special ends with the destruction of the three monsters. And, yes, I know that the whole point is for Minh to not act selfishly and instead emulate her mother, but how many times has a ranger in any season run off selfishly only to still be able to morph? They didn't seem to have an issue! Not to mention that I guess anyone can just pick up a power coin and morpher and morph. It seems so wierd to keep the beloved Yellow morpher in a box sitting in the open. I don't know. I do know though, that I could've done without Minh altogether.
    Overall, I did enjoy the special and really liked the return of Billy, Zack, Rocky, Kat, and Alpha (9 and 8 are the same VA as 5, 7, and 4). I especially enjoyed the Rangers' fights. But what I didn't enjoy such as Minh's entire character, some of the dialogue, and the Megazord fight sequence was that it felt too Power Rangers--too kid in its delivery. You're right, the audience is much older now and they don't have the minds of an audience for a kid's show (even if they watch them with their kids). Your title is more than accurate for me: it was more of the same. And I can only hope that with more reunions it won't stay that way.

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said. For the Minh stuff and the others being hypocrite, you could assume that now they're older, they realize the true danger of what they've put themselves into... which could hint at a darker perspective on PR, using child soldiers to fight battles. There are things we did as kids that, looking back now, was pretty stupid/dangerous. And maybe they were just unaware until their adulthood. But I doubt that's what the writers were going for. I think, Zack and the other discouraging Minh despite they themselves being teenagers with attitude, would have worked fine if it came with that explanation. Sure, you can use Trini's death, but I think it should've been a bit more outright said. Minh could call them out on being rangers as teens but Zack puts his foot down as a parental-figure and yells at her saying they can't lose her like they lost Trini. They had the stake of a ranger dying but, I feel it could've had a heavier role toward the characters' motivation.
      Speaking on Minh herself, again it's the writing. I like to look at Dino Thunder where their bickering and sarcasm was never taken as a negative. I love the whole Uncle Zack dynamic, but I feel Minh's only personality was "I wanna be a ranger!"
      Also, Billy never met Justin. Rocky and Kat did though.
      The special has maturity, but only when compared to recent PR seasons. Put it up against other teen media and it's definitely still kiddy. Just mentioning death isn't enough.

    • @J__T
      @J__T ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mintbari Exactly on the Minh character; she has no other goals whatsoever.
      I didn't know Billy never met Justin, my bad. Turbo was an odd time - I watched the movie, and I know they didn't meet there, but I was aleady off PRs by then. I came back for a few later seasons but yeah - I guess Billy was on Aquitar by then?
      I've always enjoyed the concept of PRs, but it's so frustrating when the execution is so lacking and kiddy. Maybe that rumored reboot will more mature or something just prior that like the other possible reunions or Cosmic Fury (I doubt it on that last one).

    I gave up on the show years ago, and only keep up through reviews and some clips. To say I think I made the right call is an understatement.
    Even the comics have been on the decline since the ending of Shattered Grid (fight me) imo.
    This special...while there are bits of awkward dialogue and acting, I thought it was pretty solid. It was nice to actually fully ENJOY something PR again.
    You actually put why I liked it best. It's like how things were before the Neo Saban era. This, THIS should be the baseline for PR in terms of tone and writing.
    Funny thing is, it's also written by the same people who've been writing the show...but apparently, according to some sources I've seen, David Yost and Walter Jones helped oversee the script/story. So if that is the case, that explains a bunch.
    This has not revitalized my interest in the show, but it is nice to get confirmation PR CAN produce good stuff still.

      I think it works here. They could've just gone with her learning her lesson and magically being able to morph, but instead, it's like Trini's power coin/morpher responded to her. I think lore-wise, it's reminiscent of Kendrix's spirit living in her Quasar Saber and choosing Karone. Minh being able to morph felt like Trini's last gift, but in a very motherly way, she gave it once she knew she was brave and selfless.

    In all honesty I did not like it
    The story was confusing the acting was dry and the choreography was horrible
    I grew up watching the series as a kid and loved it as an adult now it is corny

      I can understand leaning into corn, but they need to recognize that the fans who are watching this special are specifically much older and can't look past that. Age up the writing.

    I got nothing against the special, but I think I've reached a point in my adulthood where I overcorrect my reaction to cheesy nostalgic content. Nowadays, certain cheesy aspects are just cringe to me. Honestly, It was my own perspective on things that held me back from liking the special as much as I could have. Also doesn't help that I pay attention to WAY too much. If I notice some acting or voice work feels off (like how Mihn sounded during her first training scene), I can't unhear it. But hey, I admit it's decent for what we got in the end.

    Let's not get a twisted buddy from all the trailers and everything that came out it was not really a celebration of the past 30 years we knew it was a celebration of the original now I'm moving forward this is a solid foundation to Build something good without destroying the pass like every Franchise Has done for the last 5 years at least
